Christmas at our house was a hoot this year, made better by the fact that we got basically snowed in, and didn't have to change out of pajamas all day (normally we cook for about 800 relatives, but none of them were brave enough to face the roads), so win-win-win.

I got some wonderful presents (such as this new computer I'm currently typing on), but what set this holiday aside was the unbelievable redundancy of what my husband and I bought:

I bought him a tagine (a middle-eastern cooking pot with a cone-shaped lid).
He bought me a tagine.

I bought him "Havoc Helis" (something my daughter asked Santa to bring for her dad, so they could play together).
He bought "Havoc Helis" for Santa to give him on Christmas morning, as per our girl's sweet request.

I bought myself a Betty Crocker cake decorating kit (something my daughter asked Santa to bring for me, so that we could bake together... believe me, this wasn't something I'd considered, but she saw it on TV and was enchanted).
He bought me a Betty Crocker cake decorating kit (for Santa to leave for me, as per our girl's sweet request).

The best thing was, on Christmas Eve, we opened our gifts to each other, and almost died with laughing at their sameness. Then, when the wee girl went to bed and we started setting up the Santa gifts, we each hauled out what we'd done to surprise the other (neither of us knew the other knew what she'd asked for). At that point, we were incapacitated with laughter. So, now what do we do with all these redundant and incredibly specific gifts?

You know, I have no idea! We might actually keep both tagines... if we ever learn how to cook with them, we could cook meat in one and veggies in the other, and really look like we have our ducks in a row (ha!).

The other two (well, four) items were ordered from that "As Seen on TV" website, and their return policies are dreadful. Looks like we might be regifting these babies. Anybody know someone who is a dedicated cake decorator/helicopter pilot?

From my family:
2 quilts
Red Cross crankable emergency radio
the P&P 10th anniversary DVD set!!!! wub.gif
an Andy Williams Christmas CD
Cuddl Johns and spa socks (soooo nice)
Target and Bath and Body Works gift cards

From my inlaws:
Planet Earth DVDs (I still haven't seen this- I'm really looking forward to it!)
some money
4 movie passes and gift cards for the concession stand- this gift came with the promise of babysitting, which is the best gift of all. wub.gif

My family waaaaay overbought for our kids this year. It was ridiculous. I ended up opening most of them because the kids were too tired after a while and went off to play with their toys in another room! laugh.gif I know how much my mom loves buying them gifts, but I'm trying to encourage her to do what my MIL does, which is to just buy them one or two small presents, and put the rest of the money in their 529 college savings account. That would be much more lasting than another several Little People trucks. wink.gif

Oh WOS, how funny! My sister and I usually buy each other at least one of the same gifts, but that didn't happen this year. Your daughter is very focused!

Oh, can I come too? (Mine isn't the 10th Anniversary set though - it's the Special Edition whatever that is. And I guess I sorta bought my own Christmas gift. sad.gif Can I come anyway? smile.gif)

I know it sounds cliche, but really the best present this year was getting the time off to spend Christmas with my family. I've spent the past couple Christmases alone, and to be with them....well I just get choked up thinking about it. I was able to go to Christmas eve service with them, which was really nice. On Christmas Eve day we had a lot of fun going to the fish market to buy our Christmas dinner and then driving around the coast just for fun. We then just spent the rest of the day baking cookies and watching movies. And Christmas day was so much fun, playing with my nephew and visiting with family. wub.gif It was so special, I couldn't have asked for a better Christmas.

Queenie, your Christmas sounds like it was wonderful!

I haven't spent a Christmas at "home" in over 20 years because of work responsibilities of my own or Mr. Ultra_Temp's. Our tradition is for my parents (sometimes with other relatives in tow) to visit a few days after Christmas, which they did and have just left. We just continue the celebration until the ham and cookies run out. smile.gif My Mom and Dad were generous again this year. I did receive the coveted cowgirl boot slippers and a couple of books I had mentioned, along with money and gift cards towards a landscaping project we have planned for the Spring. It was a good Christmas!

The slippers were a big hit with me! Warm and very fashionable with yoga pants and a t-shirt for work-from-home days. smile.gif

Hubby had me completely snowed. He's convinced me that I wasn't getting an iPhone. So I thought I might be getting some other type of phone, (I need a new phone, and our contract expires soon). Guess what rang under the tree this morning? wub.gif He's good . . . . he's very good. laugh.gif

The only reason I opened my present early was because I had to prove my mom wrong since I knew she got me a Blackberry. wink.gif

Other than that, I knew what I was getting. And I even wrapped some of it.
-pair of pajamas
-pair of high heeled mary janes
-SOCKS.

And then she used her membership rewards so we got $100 American Express gift cards. Lots and lots of stuff considering I didn't ask for anything, and now I have lots of money to keep for myself since I don't have to buy a Blackberry!

An iPhone! Very nice!!

I got some men's face cream! laugh.gif This was totally unexpected. I tried it this morning and liked it.

I also got a swimming mp3 player (waterproof), instructional guitar DVD, and some books.

My wife LOVED the Origins giftset! Thanks to everyone here for suggesting. She laughed so hard she couldn't breathe when she got the 'Pleasing Your Man' book. laugh.gif

I did pretty well--books, DVD's, The Office Board Game, a Mets shirt, a Mets DVD, the Hallmark card Studio 2009, two rings--one blue topaz and the double heart one I posted, gift cards, and one gift that we will open tonight after we get back from my mom's.

So yeah, I did well. laugh.gif
