I actually just watched this episode not an hour ago....Karen actually says, "Blue Curaçao, Vodka, a splash of Peach Schnapps, some Bitters, and a pinch of something powdered....oh. Sugar."
To which Marilyn replies, "Perfect! You guessed them all....except one." The secret ingredient, we eventually find out, is Cherry Sucrets (throat lozenges). As to the actual proportions, that's a little less sure. Obviously there's little enough schnapps and bitters that their color isn't obvious; the drink was clearly blue (although, to be fair, we don't know that the drinks in the show were actually Blue Marilyns...they may have been something else, colored blue so it LOOKED like the actors were actually drinking the cocktail). That said, there's probably not too much vodka, and enough powdered sugar to keep the drink from being completely clear. In place of the cherry sucret, one could probably use a tiny bit of grenadine. I'm actually working on figuring out the proportions myself, so when I do find something that tastes good, I'll let you guys know! |

Hey kids, me again!
I know I just posted, but right after I did, I tried a recipe that turned out really well! Here goes Note: an ounce is about 2/3 of a shot glass- also, many drink shakers have caps that measure an ounce. 1 oz vodka (I like Skyy, Stolichnaya, or Grey Goose- furthermore a Wasp such as Marilyn would probably have spent more for a vodka like Stoli or Grey Goose). 1 oz Peach Schnapps 3-4 oz Blue Curaçao (depending how much orange flavor you like- also to affect color) .5-.75 oz Bitters (any kind- the darker it is, though, the less you'll need to use, as it will make the drink less blue. You can also use spiced rum in a pinch) A splash of grenadine (replaces the Cherry Sucret). Use only a little; you only need a hint of cherry flavor. I filled the cap of the grenadine bottle and poured that in. It works very well. For the powdered sugar, make a simple syrup by shaking the powdered sugar with water in a separate container. You can do this to taste, to make the drink as strong or as weak as you'd like. Don't use too much sugar, though, as it will eventually separate from the rest of the drink and sink to the bottom. If you make several at once, make sure you shake every time you pour another. This is MY recipe. I have no idea if this is the same drink that Marilyn drinks. But it tasted good to me. Really, it's just a glorified Fuzzy Navel. But it's such a pretty blue color! You may want to alter this a little to meet your tastes. |
