A place for your SBS reviews. Here's mine!

Amy cold open - Flashbacks of my youth. The clothes and hair were period correct. Bon Jovi stepping out of the poster was predictable and reminiscient of the The Purple Rose of Cairo. The dialogue was enjoyable, especially about Amy's personality. The end was especially nice with Amy getting to say "Live from NY." The second week in a row we get spared the pain of a politcal opening. I enjoyed this but I probably would have gone with the current Ann Coulter controversy. Grade: A-

Monologue - Simple and a few laughs, most notably from Sambora blowing his lines. I liked this up until the song. Grade: B

Ohhh! - With JBJ, Hader gets to expand his NJ guy into a full sketch. The sketch wasn't going much of anywhere until Wiig did her NJ s1ut routine. We could have used another NJ s1ut (Maya?) and had her compete for the guys' attention. Grade: C-

Al Gore - One of my favorite of Hammond's characters. We all know Al has gotten a lot of awards for his movie. A fairly amusing jab at his ever growing collection of awards along with his ego. I probably would have added something like, "And here's the note that President Bush sent me after I conceded." Note: "You lost sucka!" Grade: C+

People Getting Punched
- The juxtaposition of ultraviolence and humor has been played to great effect before in movies such as A Clockwork Orange and Fight Club, but this short managed to crystalize the subversive humor of those movies into a three-minute masterpiece of psycho aggression. The post-punch celebratory dancing was a stroke of genius. Kudos to the Lonely Island gang for this beuaty! Grade: A+

Dane Cook Promo
- Great to see Sudeikis slam Dane the hack. Those promos that Dane has been doing for the playoffs are totally annoying and this little piece captured that perfectly. Grade: A-

Vinny Vedecci - It must be Hader's night. He is great at doing Italian guys so it is only natural that he would appear a lot on the Bon Jovi episode. The high point was definitely the commercial for Blaze cigarettes as well as Jon calling out Hader's fake Italian at the end of the sketch. Grade: C+

Weekend Update - Most of the jokes were flat. Rosa Santiago was weak. Crappy jokes don't automatically improve because of a crappy Latin accent. Armisen as Nicholas Fehn was the highlight as the braindead social commentator. Samberg was also enjoyable as the naked guy. Grade: B-

Lost Purse - First off, I'm a Star Trek geek, so I have a positive bias towards Trek parodies. Unfortunately this one didn't offer much besides an airhead for a captain. If that was the tack they wanted to take, why not take it further and have her back the spaceship into the alien's spaceship as she attempts to leave? And then have her get out and look at the damage while a bunch of papparazzi take photos. Maybe, maybe not. Grade: C-

NBC football promo - Not much to say. A time filler that is typically saved until the end. Grade: C

Bon Jovi - A slap at Jon's ego that was further reinforced tonight by the fact that he performed 2 songs as the host while the musical guest only got to perform 1 song. What's up with that? Anyway, it was nice to see yet another original sketch tonight even though it had a rather slim premise. Grade: C

Iconoclasts - Kristen as Bjork was truly hilarious. It was very short and they may have been limited by time from developing this into a more fully realized sketch. Still, Kristen's Bjork holds promise for future visits. Grade: C+

Overall - Another decent episode. The lack of political sketches was refreshing as was the high number of original sketches. I think the writers and cast are definitely getting more confident and are not afraid to rely on old standbys like Hardball and Deep House Dish. I, for one, am very pleased by this development. Onwards and upwards. Grade: B-/C+

I agree that JBJ showed extraordinary ego performing two songs while Foo Fighters only got to perform once. Adding irony to insult, I love that during his monologue, he made a point to clarify and joke about the fact that he was the host, not the musical guest.

Amy cold open - Decent. John needs to learn that sketch comedy requires a bit more exaggeration in his delivery. He's acting like he's in a movie. B-

Monologue - Uninspired. C

Ohhh! Again, JBJ's delivery was very flat. C

Al Gore Boring. Fast-forwarded through it. No grade.

People Getting Punched Kinda funny. B-

Dane Cook Promo Jason nailed Dane Cook. B

Vinny Vedecci - This sketch is getting old. C

Weekend Update Can't remember anything that was funny. C

Lost Purse - Lame, although I liked Wiig's character. She's quite flexible. C

NBC football promo

Bon Jovi - A bit too obvious. C-

Iconoclasts This was funny. B

Overall C. I like the dude, but JBJ isn't a funny guy, so all his sketches are going to be lacking.

Hey, Farley, thanks for starting the thread this week, I meant to use my moderator powers to make the thread magically appear without my input, but I forgot. So, thanks.

As I said in another thread, I didn't get to watch it live this week (Booo!), but I just got done watching the episode and here are my thoughts.

Lamy Pohler Cold Open - This was great. I felt like I was watching one of the better sketches of yesteryear. As Farley pointed out, the whole Jon Bon Jovi stepping out of the poster was predictable, but still worked. The clothes were dead on, and Amy's accent was fun. The sketch and the characters were allowed to breathe because there weren't too many jokes. In a sketch like this it would be tempting to try to throw as many jokes juxtaposing the 1980's with today, but they didn't which was definitely the right choice. Very enjoyable, very funny. Grade: A

Jon Bonologue Jovi - I was hoping they wouldn't have Bon Jovi sing at all. I would have much preferred a monologue in which Jon would seeming be on the verge of singing multiple times. People could ask questions, the answers to which would be the titles of Bon Jovi songs, the music would swell, he would take a deep breath in, and then simply answer the question seriously, toying with people's expectations.

For me however, this monologue served an even greater purpose, one that truly hasn't been seen in years; to prove that the show is live. Sambora forgetting his line, quietly muttering, "I lost it," and Bon Jovi saving him is something the likes of which hasn't been seen so prominently in quiet a while. Considering the fact that someone just asked me "Hey, when do they record SNL," unaware that it was live. I think moments like these, while technically "mistakes," are vital to the show's success. Grade: B-

Ohhhhh! - I never saw Hader's Jersey Guy getting his own sketch, but I'm not that surprised he did. This particular sketch was in the great SNL tradition of having game shows with ridiculous premises. For me, however, it just fell a little short. All of the characters were essentially the same, not leaving much room for the all important "conflict" so necessary to push a piece forward. If this sketch were to recur, I'd like to see this turn into a "Fish out of water" scenario putting an out of town priest, doctor, lawyer, or some other respected profession into the mix. The third contestant could then be used as a foil in order to act as the consciousness of the contestants, being appalled at the scenarios that are being presented, until finally at the very end the character could reveal something that causes the other characters to be appalled, effectively turning the situation and giving a better beat to end the sketch on.

As it stands now. Grade: C-

A Visit with Former Vice President Al Gore - I tend to love Hammond as Gore, but the impression seemed to get in the way of the flow of the sketch, slowing it down unnecessarily. I also feel that they didn't escalate quickly enough, having too many awards which just didn't have big enough jokes in them. If they did this by the book, the third award would have been one of the more outlandish ones (Group sex scene perhaps?) and then moved back to the mundane. Another thing I would have liked to have seen, similar to Farley's idea, would be to have had a blank frame on his wall with dusty velvet curtains on either side of it, and a large gold plaque at the bottom which read "Official Certificate of the US Presidency." Having him awkwardly try to avoid it would have been amusing.

I also wish that they had made the Al impersonation as ridiculous as they had back in the days before the '00 elections, bringing in a robot butler, while he was showing off his awards, to serve him some rare, exotic beverage, or something similar. Grade: C

People Getting Punched Just Before Eating - For my taste, the beginning of it was a little too similar to "Kicked In the Nuts" a series of shorts that got their start on Channel 101, one of the first places The Lonely Island got to show off their comedic chops. That said, I loved this, and by the end it was different enough that I didn't care. I loved Andy's dance, I loved Bon Jovi's full recovery, the murder, and especially loved the thriller reference. I also liked seeing Jorma make another cameo, but I'm pretty sure that puts me into a small minority of people (Both those who know who Jorma is, and those who noticed him getting punched just before eating what appeared to be a giant turkey leg). Grade: A-

Dane Cook Promo #1 - Finally! Do I really need to say more than that? Sudeikis aped Dane's idiotic, coked-up frat boy persona and style to a T. Enjoyable and quick (The latter of which isn't seen much on SNL anymore, but it was a definite boon). Grade: A

La Rivista Della Televisione Con Vinny Vedecci - I've never really been a fan of this sketch, but I am a big fan of children smoking cigarettes with nuns. That said, I don't think it was enough to save the sketch. I though that the revelation that Vinny was speaking fake Italian was a little weak, though I'm not exactly sure how it could have been made better. The main problem with this, and it seems to be a consistent one with SNL, is the lack of escalation. There was no build, no climax, no denouement, it was just small talk followed by a revelation. If there had been the slightest build up towards that revelation, it would have been better. Grade: C-

Weekend Update - As Chevy Chase says, don't play at being bad at something because the audience might think you are. Rosa, I'm looking at you. I would have preferred a meta joke about the potential strike in which the text of the joke was a jab at Amy, having her reading the cue cards, completely unaware is reading hate from the writers. Another idea would have been to completely break tradition by having her stop, realizing that the cards just stopped, and that there was nothing else written on them. Them getting out of their seats she and Seth attempt to find the writers backstage, eventually finding them sleeping/smoking pot/coming up with witty protest signs/anything. If they did that, it would have been better suited as the final joke, but could have really payed off.

As for the rest, it was a good night, nothing hugely outstanding but no really big clunkers either. Andy's naked man was fun, and I hope we see him again, either as a recurring WU character like Gay Hitler or as a talk show guest (Maybe a host?). Grade: B-

Lost [Purse] in Space - As it stands, this sketch would have had to be rewritten for it to have made any difference. In my notes I named this sketch "Target Lady in Space." Anyone who wants to know how I felt about this sketch needs only to read my reviews of the Target Lady sketches. The only thing I could think of to help improve this at all, would be to have the crew slowly escape (Maybe even with the help of the invaders) while she continues to make pointless announcements ("I forgot to press the button for the last announcement," "There's a spaceship with its lights on," etc) leaving her alone, until she is the only one left and the ship explodes. Grade: D

Dane Cook Promo #2 - *See Dane Cook Promo #1* Grade: A

Bon Jovi - I would have liked to see the band go to ridiculous measures just to prove to Bon Jovi that his name was in fact Bon Jovi (Getting his birth certificate or some such nonsense). I would have also preferred to see this sketch tightened up and shortened. It was nothing spectacular, but overall, it was simple, direct, and enjoyable. Grade: C+/B-

Iconoclasts - I thought this was great. Kenan's Barkley was weak, but luckily it wasn't the focus of the sketch, so it was excusable. I loved Kristen's Bjork, and thought that this sketch overall was quick and too the point without beating the clash of context into the ground, and I feel that if it was longer it would have gotten really old, really fast. For that...Grade: B/B+

Overall - After last week, I wasn't expecting much, leave it to SNL to have a great come from behind victory like this. I thought this episode was the best of the season, and really hope it shows us what's in store in the weeks to come. Writer's, Cast, Crew, you've earned yourselves some time off. So go sleep, and dream glorious dreams of hilarious, future sketches. We'll still be here when you get back. Grade: B ( A really solid B )

Now all I have to do is finish last week's SBS and I'll be all caught up.

-Nick

I was a little surprised by this, too, especially since Foo Fighters also have a new album out. I wonder if they knew that one song was going to be all they got to perform.

I've actually been thinking that for a long time, and I'm glad I said it.

In my perfect world, Dave Grohl would have been the host and the only appearance by JBJ is when he got punched before eating. And there would have been no full recovery. But I totally would have left Sambora choking live in the episode.

It's not that I hate Bon Jovi, but if they're going to play two songs, let them be the musical guest. Has anyone seen how funny Dave Grohl is? I always loved when he was on Craig Kilborne.

THANK YOU, ROBOT!!! I sat in front of the tv for an hour and a half, watched too many so/so sketches with an 80's hair-band-lead-singing-every-song-sounds-the-same-slash-actor-douche and all I got to hear was ONE Foo's song?! I literally scrolled back through the tivo to make sure that I didn't walk out of the room and missed a second song, even though I knew I didn't. I'd like to meet the people who decided to screw The Foo's out of their second song time slot and then handed it over to BJ wrapped up with a pretty little bow, line them up in front of wall sized speakers and let them listen to their beloved BJ sing their most painful single about having a nice day for ummm .. let's say .... eternity.

Note to SNL staff: if you are going to let asshats like Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears and Maroon 5 sing two songs, you should probably let good musical guests ~ aka Foo Fighters ~ sing their expected two songs!!!!!

It's a pretty sad day when Samberg is the genius of the bunch and decides to put Dave in a sketch (non-speaking as it was).

wish they would post the Hammond Gore skit. Was a bit long but think that actually made it funnier and more like real Gore. Loved the poppy award, the worlds greatest dad cup and the OJ bit.

Havent watched SNL in a quite a while but DVR'd it when found Bon Jovi was on. Seemed to be a lot funnier than last couple times I recorded it. Used to love it back in the old days (70's) never missed it. Lost interest in SNL sometime after Norm McDonald was fired. This episode was good enough to check another episode out.

Here's my two cents...

Amy cold open - - I thought this was as close to the perfect cold open as SNL has come in a while. It was simple enough that the two could just go at it without worrying about the audience catching on. Poehler did a great job at capturing the angst of an 80s teen. I was definitely loving the hair spray. “ I need to get my hair higher!” I also enjoyed Bon Jovi’s line of “Yes Bon Jovi is still around.” All around good cold open!- Grade:A

Monologue - It was decent. Sambora’s “forgetfulness” made the bland monologue a little funny. Even though I was laughing at him, at least I was laughing. Thats what happens on a live show. I would have liked it better if Bon Jovi had performed a joke song-maybe something lonely island. That would have been better than the host performing two songs when the musical guest performed one. Grade:C

Ohhh! - I don’t really know why I enjoyed this so much but there was something about Hader’s New jersey guy that just cracks me up. Did anyone else notice how much Hader was in this episode? I liked that. Maybe that’s part of the formula for better shows. The Jersey guys were entertaining and I liked Wiig’s performance. Grade:B

Al Gore - It was a good premise. I felt like it went a little long. Grade:C

People Getting Punched - I didn’t think this was very funny at first. I was setting myself up to not like it because I didn’t think it would go anywhere. The Lonely Island proved me wrong. I loved his exchange with Forte. By the end I was dying! Lonely Island rarely disappoints. Grade:A-

Dane Cook Promo - I watched the real promo and I was laughing...not at Dane Cook's performance but actually at him. I loved Sudekis in this. He really captured the Great Big Douche Bag(aka GBDB) that is Dane Cook. Grade:B+

Vinny Vedecci - !- I love this character. Hader is pretty darn convincing with his faux Italian. I loved Blaze! The cigarettes for kids was a great spin and I loved how bothered Jon Bon Jovi was. I was kind of hoping Bon Jovi would just start talking in a matching faux Italian. That could be interesting if they do this sketch in the future. It would catch people off guard at least. Grade: B+

Weekend Update - The jokes were better this week. Seth’s delivery was a little sketchy but I’d say it was better. I enjoyed Maya’s character. The jokes weren’t anything special and I wasn't feeling it until the bit of improv and "okay sexy". She was cracking Amy up. I really enjoyed Armisen's Nicholas Feighn. Everybody knows someone like that. They think by talking in circles they are making a good point. The naked cell phone guy didn’t do it for me. Andy plays the same character everytime he does something like that. It’s a waste of his talent. Grade:B-

Lost Purse - I am the first one to tell you how great Kristin Wiig is but I was pretty disappointed in the sketch. It didn't really go anywhere. I would have had the alien commander genuinely concerned that Wiig could not find her purse. maybe he helps her and then massacres the whole ship. Grade:C-/D+

NBC football promo - Short but sweet. It was good for what it was. Grade: B-

Bon Jovi - The length of this sketch wasn't really necessary. They could have argued over other things than just the band name. I did like the fact that Jon didn't know the two guys names because let's face it, nobody knows those guys. Grade:B-

Iconoclasts - I loved Bjork! Kenan's Barkley wasn't really impressive but I did enjoy him referring to Wiig as Bork.Wiig really delivered and in a night with little of her that was important.

Overall - This week was so much better than the past two weeks. There weren't many great individual sketches but as a whole the show was solid. I liked the mass of Hader but would like to see more Wiig and Armisen. All in all this was a solid week. Grade:B+

sorry I didn't post last week I was slightly dissapointed and I've made a new season resolution to be positive.

Lamy Pohler Cold Open - I loved this sketch especially the lamy Poehler part perfect open. A+

Jon Bonologue Jovi - blah. this is the worst kind of singing monologue, the mess up was worth while, for some reason it made me mad at first, then it was hilarious. D

Ohhhhh! - when Bon Jovi acted like he was gonna punch Hader for callin his mom a whor# was funny and Kristen did well. C

A Visit with Former Vice President Al Gore - had some humer to it got a few laughs but I'm still not rally into the political thing C

People Getting Punched Just Before Eating - AWSOME! thats what should be at the end with all of us with our thumbs up. this was great I especially loved the zombies they are always hilarious A

Dane Cook Promos - they hit the nail on the head. these promos are so anoying (cause I don't like baseball) and like they implied Dane has nothing to do with baseball. they did great on the background too. B

La Rivista Della Televisione Con Vinny Vedecci - I usually only liked the end of these but they changed this one in a way I liked it. I can't remember though. I liked the twist at the end where Bon Jovi was like "I grew up with my Grand mother speaking itallian and I haven't recognized a word you've said." and Hader always does great impressions. B

Weekend Update - I liked this WU the jokes were good, thats all I really have to say I can't remember much. Amy's hair is lookin better. A

Foo Fighters- they have so many better songs then this one

Lost [Purse] in Space - I can totally see a lady doing that. Kristen was great as always B

Bon Jovi - That song is so much better when Sugarland does it with him.

Iconoclasts - Kristens Bjork was great it was almost perfect. and very funny A-

Overall - Much better show. I look forward to more of this the rest of the season. I'm not a teacher but I say it averages to a B+ or A-

I meant to do this Sunday but I was way too busy. Hader finally stepped out of the shadows this week.

Amy cold open - Woohoo! No political cold open again (I do have the suspicion that they're saving it for one big whammy. Wow Amy's 80's hair looks better than her current hair. The consistency of the accent and time period were well maintained with out being overdone. Grade: A-

Monologue - Brief and accentuated by Sambora's missed line (all that partying in the 80's must have wreaked havoc on Not too fond of the musical perfomance but it beats some badly concocted musical number or some meandering talk about how it's been his dream to host. Grade: B

Ohhh! - Loved the answering with Ohhh! and the game show format, but felt it was extremely anticlamatic with the NJ stereotypes being just thrown at the wall. A little more character distinction would have been nice. On the bright side, we did see more the NJ caricature stretched out for a longer duration. Grade: C

Al Gore - I thought this was another vanity piece patterned after the cold open of the premiere with Hilary Clinton, but the awards. There were a few too many awards that could've just been whittled down to by comedic effect. I would have loved to see some bizarre explanation like him walk by some open closet with judges tied up pushing the door closed like no one saw any thing. Grade: C

People Getting Punched - Not extremely original, given the fact that I'd seen the one on Channel 101. Also I'm impressed by any Thriller references. The dancing was the icing on the cake. Grade: A-

Dane Cook Promo - Sudeikis fully captured the I'm-so-conciously-unaware-of-how-much-of-a-d-bag-I-am air that Dane so easily emits. The amount of media exposure that moron gets is truly a crime. Grade: A-

Vinny Vedecci - If these sketches really had a direction, they'd be so much. I think for them to establish that Hader's Italian so late sort of dimmed the effect. Maybe in the beginning Bon Jovi started speaking actual Italian and they were the bewildered ones would have put a new spin on the sketch to add to the shock factor of the cigarettes being smoked by nuns and children. Was I having an ADD moment or did the ashtray wolf out great clouds of smoke throughout the whole sketch? Grade: C

Weekend Update - No real notable jokes. The Rosa Santiago bit went nowhere because it was just another accented editorial with no real content. I guess Armisen is the official go-to guy for inaudible dialogue editorials. I thought Samberg's naked guy could have gone for more of the gross factor like Ferrell's nude model sketch. Grade: C+

Lost Purse -I don't think this sketch was even comparable to even one the worst Target Lady sketch. If there was a more impact of her being forgetful, it may have packed more of punch. The mere fact that purse caused all that was not quite easy to take in. There wasn't even an item of value specifically in that purse to prove why it was so important. Grade: D-

NBC football promo - More of a show of irony than true comedy. Grade: C-

Bon Jovi - I kinda missed the tail end of the Foo Fighters and this sketch because the local news interrupted them to broadcast an Amber Alert on a newborn. Grade: No Grade

Iconoclasts - I'm not that familiar with Bjork besides her choice of fowl attire at a awards' show. Kristen's spacy resemblance and dialogue were truly the only part that held my attention. Kenan donned yet another ill-fitting impression and only comedically contributed with dubbing her "Bork". I guess since it was the last sketch it had an abbreviated, rushed feel to it. Grade: C+

Overall - A lot of exposure to new material as in the past two weeks has brightened prospects. A lot more could be done to push the envelope in many of the sketches. Noticeably less reliance on political sketches in a practically politically dead week. I am trying decide whether I'm bewildered or excited for next episode being hosted by Brian Williams. Grade: Somewhere between B- and C+

Amy cold open - Eh. I liked the massive hair spray reference. What's with Amy's accent? Didn't laugh. Grade: D

Monologue - The best part is when the old dude flubbed his lines. I also liked the couple who were ****** off enough to get up and leave. I should have taken a cue from them and done the same. Grade: C-

Ohhh! - This got old very fast. I guess extreme repetition is the new "funny". Case in point: last week's "I said we!" again and again and again. Oh well, repetition is easy to write. Grade: H

Al Gore - I simply cannot believe that Darryl Hammond is still alive. All he does are impersonations. This had a decent premise I suppose, but I felt he was trying a bit too hard during the second half. I almost slipped into a coma, but not quite. Grade: G+

People Getting Punched - They must have been high on crack cocaine when they thought up the premise to this one. It was incredibly stupid and nonsensical, therefore I approve. Grade: C+

Dane Cook Promo - I don't really know much about Dane Cook since I try to have a life outside of TV but this was almost OK. Grade: D+

Vinny Vedecci - This is getting old. I didn't laugh once. I've maybe chuckled two or three times for the entire show so far. Grade: J-

Weekend Update - This nearly killed me due to the sheer boredom, but then I decided that shooting myself would be quicker and less painful than continuing to watch the show. Grade: M+

Lost Purse - Didn't see, the TV was off and I was busy staring at wall having more fun than this episode of SNL could provide me with.

NBC football promo - Didn't see. TV off.

Bon Jovi - Didn't see.

Iconoclasts Didn't see.

Overall - This had to be one of the worst episodes in a very long time. Granted it is rarely spectacular, but it's usually somewhat watchable with some real laughs here and there. I demand a full refund immediately! Grade: F

Note to SNL staff: if you are going to let asshats like Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears and Maroon 5 sing two songs, you should probably let good musical guests ~ aka Foo Fighters ~ sing their expected two songs!!!!!

I second that, and would like to add that if you're going to have performances by two different bands, take the time to set up the mix for each band. It was obvious the sound mix was for Bon Jovi and not changed for the Foos. (SNL, you suck!)

I was surprised they actually let Dave and Taylor be in one of the sketches but JBJ had to be in that too? Full recovery my @$$! Quite honestly if JBJ had to perform 2 songs then perhaps he should have let Dave (and Taylor) HOST the show, they would much funnier!

Whoa, if I'm not mistaken scales end at F. You can't get a refund for something you didn't buy. Why waste your time commenting if it was such a waste of time to watch the show? Why all the newbie hatred? Bon Jovi and Foo Fighters knew of this arrangement ahead of time. Just be glad we got 2 professional bands. We could have had a bunch of hillbillies come out banging spoons, blowing jugs, and scraping a washboard. Can't we all take a breather to get all the bad vibes out of the air?

That actually sounds more interesting the most of the bands who have appeared on SNL over the past few years, besides Beck, who used forks instead of spoons.

I've heard similar rumors to this, but more scientific research is necessary.

I'll just keep talking to myself on this forum, waiting patiently for the writer's strike to end and for the regulars to return to the board. And hey, all you noobees are welcome to post too y'know!
