So who thinks jim's date at the end of 'take your daughter to work day,' was with the blonde corporate lady (booze cruise) who he later called and e-mailed (the carpet)?
keds
I was wondering the same thing. I think her name is Brenda. Doesn't she live in New York?
PurpleBelt
Maybe it was with Oscar?

OK so when Sasha (Toby's Daughter) is in Michael's office he is joking around with her and says "next stop coke...abunga!" Do you think he was going to say something else that was innapropriate and caught himself? If so what was he going to say?
Paper
I thought he was saying Cucamonga (like Rancho Cucamonga, CA?) just because it sounds funny.
StaplerInJello
Paper, I agree.. I thought he was saying 'Coook-a-monga' as in Rancho Cucamonga, but it's kind of weird b/c that's in CA and they are supposed to be in PA...

Unless Rancho Cucamonga is famous for their train stations??? I do not know if they are... Perhaps they are....
Dink
You forced a lurker to join up to provide the answer:

On the classic Jack Benny Radio Program from the Golden Age of Radio (what's that?), Jack often found himself in a train station. A running gag on the show (based in Beverly Hills) was that the station loud speaker would always announce "Train leaving on Track Five for Anaheim, Azusa, and Cuc-------amonga". The voice was vocal genius Mel Blanc The Man of 1000 Voices", who also was the voice of Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Barney Rubble, and many many other voices. The cities were chosen due to their funny sounding names to listeners on the east coast.

The gag was funny because you knew it was coming, you had to wait for it, you knew that Mel did it differently every time, and it always upset Jack Benny. One time, Mel stopped at "Anaheim, Azusa, and Cuc...". The payoff came minutes later as the story continued and Jack arrived home, (the audience is anticipating something all this time), the phone rings and Mel's voice says "AMONGA! You thought I forgot, didn't you?"

Michael, being a student of comedy, appropriately came up with a comedic railroad reference. Although it was way over Sasha's head, she still thought the delivery was funny, just as radio audiences did 50 years ago. Although, as usual, Michael botched the classic line.

A final Mel Blanc note: On his tombstone, it says "That's All Folks".
Dilanon
Of course it was with her, he says so himself: Jim Halpert, from the cruise...got your number from the corporate directory. I love Kelly's facial expressions as she's eavesdropping.

It's an educated guess that his date is with Brenda, based on 'The Carpet.' But, we aren't told for sure.
eardoc2000
Maybe it was with Dana, from Hooter's.
MulletMan13
Oh my... just watched 'Bring Your Daughter to Work Day' on my Tivo, and it is so depressing!

The part with Michael on Fundle Bundle just made me feel awful, and sad for him... sad.gif

Did anybody else feel bad for Michael in this episode?? =(
monip6886
Yeah, that was rough. I think it was even more sad when you could tell that it hit him pretty hard (when he goes into his office).

If he wasn't such a 'philanderer', maybe his hopes & dreams would come true.
thebossofdancing
This was the episode I liked the least - maybe because we feel so sorry for Michael. Its so sad that he calls himself a child star based on the 15 seconds on that show...
ike32790
I did feel sorry for him, but i also thought his response was histarical! " i wanna get married and have a million babies so i can have a million friends and no one can so no to being my friend" haha. Even the puppet was speechless!

If that qualifies you as a child star, you guys can say you know an ex-celebrity because of my two audience appearances on The Bozo Show. I wore a cookie monster shirt for my first appearance when I was four. My agent got me back on when I was sixteen. I used that opportunity to express my love for Iron Maiden.

My little brother one-upped me though. He got his name on the air as an at-home player for Bozo buckets.

Cookie was drunk.
MulletMan13
LOL I just watched this again (friend wanted to see it) and the long pause of the puppet is so depressing.... oh my ...

its hard not to laugh though biggrin.gif
monip6886
OMG.

I was watching Bring Your Daughter to Work Day and I couldn't stop laughing over Dwight reading from the book his granmutter had given him. Then it hit me.

I had a similar book as a child. My mother is German and we lived in in Germany (my dad was stationed in Stuutgart) until I was six. Anyway, I have a book called Die Struwwelliese - which is the girl version of the series. I just dragged it out of the attic. Sadly, it's all in German and I can't quite understand all of it - but it's great to come across this little treasure.

Anyway, the story of Struwwelpeter is real. Type it into your Yahoo or Google search and the info will come up.

Funny.

Haven't read that exact collection, but we did read a lot of ETA Hoffmann in comp lit classes in grad school and discuss the effect of German Kunstmarchen on more modernist writers. (That may have even been a question on my Master's exam.) I remember howling when I saw that book and telling my husband "That's just like that class with Professor So-and-so I had!" (Which was far more surreal than ANY office experience I've had since...and I've had lots of them!) wink.gif

Great question!
muffyduffy
I used nanny for a German woman who had two little kids. I don't know if it was exactly the same book, but it was like that one, and I remember her taking it out one time and asking me to read it to them. The first story I turned to was a child that had gotten their hands chopped off for stealing a cookie, another one got burned to death for something else, I can't remember. I laughed so hard when Dwight brought out that book- I doubt most people in America realise it's for real!
ilovepam
thats so cool I thought it was just a thing the writers made up, And i guess Dwight is german?
muffyduffy
Yeah, remember when he mentions his grandfather was in WWII, he killed 20 men and spent the rest of the war in an ALLIED prison camp? That's one of my favorite lines.
ilovepam
and his father fighted diabetes and high blood pressure... different kind of fight... that is one of my top 100 lines for me...
muffyduffy
LOL If the writers are reading this, we are going to need a Schrute family tree. One grandfather was Amish, which was the paternal side because of the name being the same, the other grandfather who was a Nazi must have been his maternal side, so which one was buried in his Tux? The Nazi? (his Amish Gpa wouldn't have a tux) I'm getting confused! Anyone?

I'm not sure what Icon you are talking about, but Jim does not dance in "Bring your daughter to work day".
toaster oven 101
He does dance. It's just a real quick clip of it when everybody is eating pizza, and no reference is made to it on the show. If you don't look quick, you almost miss it.

Yep, I see what you are talking about.. He's in the background talking to Meredith and Pam and I guess in some Elaine-Bennis-esque world you might consider it dancing. But as you said, there is no context...

What Icon are you talking about???
TV_Nerd
I have no idea what you guys are talking about but I want to see it! It sounds cute.

The icon is on this website... http://community.livejournal.com/usoffice_icons

Ah, yes, the Halpert Shuffle.
TV_Nerd
Wow. If his acting career ever falls through he could definitely make it as a dancer.

Haven't any of you on this thread seen him and Rainn Wilson on the Ellen Degeneres Show dancing like crazy? There is a video of it on YouTube.

Who did Jim have a date with in, "Take Your Daughter to Work Day?" He wasn't going out with Katy, was he just leaving? Or did he really have a date, I'm confused.

Whoa, why is that posted twice? What the hey hey? But, um, I just have to say, EW! Because Jim with Brenda, does NOT seem right, this guy must be soo in love with Pam that he's dating losers to cover it!
1357933
Ohh! You merged them, haha. I get it. Okay...

When Kevin's fiance's daughter invited Jim over for dinner at the end of Take Your Daughters to Work Day, he said he'd love to but couldn't that night because he had plans. When Kevin asked what he said he had a date. You didn't see him asking anyone out in that episode, so I assumed it was "Brenda from corporate" (seen in Booze Cruise) who he asked out via phone and e-mail.

I loved seeing Pam's reaction when Jim sneaks away (when everyone's listening to Michael sing in the conference room) and Pam turns to say something to him and he's already gone. She realizes he's leaving for his date!

Um... ok.

Still from Take Your Daughter To Work Day

Toby has a cute kid but there was a deleted scene where Kelly says Toby "has a stupid kid."
But there was another scene where she said the kid was cute.
the_office_geek121234
In the deleted scene from Take your daughter to Work day when Toby's daughter is under Ryan's desk hiding and she runs out when he sits down is Ryan smiling at the end of the scene after she runs off?

My husband is learning guitar and is currently doing that CSNY song "Teach Your Children". He always thinks I'm laughing at him (he hasn't seen the clip yet) but I'm just picturing Michael and Dwight.

Wow. I'm so glad this thread was resurrected! TYDTWD is my favorite episode so far. Why? because of Stanley telling off Ryan!

"Have you lost your mind!? I'll help you find it!"
