Full Version: Suggestions on making the show better
NBC > Reality > America's Got Talent

It was disappointing to find out at the end of the show of how many acts we never got to see that made it. Why show us the ridiculous stuff then?

A few suggestions
1) We don't need to see acts being called from the audience.
save the time to show us more acts by having the acts backstage ready to go.
2) If an act gets three "X"s, they should be shuffled off stage. No need to have the judges say "NO" three times more.
No reason for the acts to berate the judges. Get them off and move on and sho more acts.
3) Regis Philbin ?? Why?
4) Start the show at 8pm not 9pm.
5) Never make it 2 hours again !!! Unless it is the FINAL.
6) And lastly, make this the last season as this show is over before it started. Its obvious that the talent is elsewhere (on FOX) and the replay of the gong show would have flew better if they just called it "The GONG Show"

The show is an excellent idea and Brandy is GREAT, but Piers is no Simon and David is not entertaining as a judge. They generate anger from the contestants as well as the audience it?s not funny or FUN. It?s as if Simon spent too much money on Regis and didn?t have any budget left for Judges. I had to turn it off and watch reruns of LOST, that?s bad for me. It all depends what your looking for, Jerry Springer or Chuck Barris.

Uh... I disagree about Brandi. I mean, it might just be because she has the I.Q. of a house plant, call me crazy...

Agreed, 3 Xs should mean the show's over for that contestant.

As I've previously mentioned I'm a fan of variety shows. I've seen "Steve Harvey," "Solstrum," Any and all "Gong Show" creations, the four "That's Amazing!" specials, hosted by Richard Karn, and every magic or circus special that has been on TV in my lifetime. I recognize the circuit - The "Horn Guy" is a ripoff of an old act that can be seen on Solstrum Episode 4: "Rockin' Wind." Vladimir Milosevich used only his first name for a set of appearences - where he wore red. The Microwave magician started out with a bowling ball trick called Bowl-A-Rama; it isn't his--it's by Kevin James, and you could even buy it online.

Long story short--hey, did you just say 'too late?'--I know this stuff. And I've never seen it done better than a one-season Fox special called "30 Seconds to Fame." Here's the format, which I would highly recommend to the producers -

NO judges. That means no banter, no egos, no bullcrap to put up with. Just one studio audience armed with AFV-esque voting devices. Each act comes out (sometimes a screen is lifted and their already set up, on fire, whatever) and has exactly thirty seconds to impress said audience. If they don't want to see the act that long - they can start voting no. Enough people say no, not enough say yes - they go home a few seconds early.

A host only has a second or two between acts to outro and intro from a group of midget plate spinners to a west-coast swing-dance duo. But they could have included all the acts we saw - and all the acts we didn't see - in thirty minutes without having to listen to Limey or Brandy.

At the end the audience votes for three acts, who get another thirty seconds - from then, a final vote to choose the winner, who walks away with a cash prize.

Over. Done with. Fun. Unpredictable. But you always leave feeling like they made a good choice, for some reason.

Thus are my recomendations.

(P.S. I promise, If I can dope out a way to take VHS and put it on the Internet, I'll post those videos somewhere.)

Those are great ideas but I'd be concerned that the audience would buzz the act too quickly, especially if packed with a certain group's fans. A judge with a taste for something different, more exotic even, may give them a little more time to prove themselves. I noticed at the beginning of the show they were more hasty to buzz out a contestant but as things progressed they gave more people a chance.

I agree with the ideas above. However if you do plan on keeping the judges it should be a lot more organized when they are about to speak. It seemed like no one knew when to talk and when they did, for the most part it didnt make any sense. There seems to be serious chemistry missing.

Oh and one more thing put people through that are actually talented not ones that arnt. I would love to know what david thought was talented about an old guy stripping, and i guess the same goes for brandi. If they cant see why an old guy stripping isnt talent then this show is absolutley doomed.

I think that this show could be good if it had a better format. It annoys me that we weren't able to see all of the good performances, at least post them online! The X's are obviously not being used properly. There just doesn't seem to be any organization or expectation. Also, after all this searching and moving people onto the next round what's next? Will they have to reaudition or go through some challenges to show that they are best? There's going to be a HUGE group of people after this round. This show has a good premise, but just hasn't been thought through enough.
