WOW. My vote is now with the Miller brothers..very unique and I would buy a CD or go to a concert. Bianca would be my second choice...I'd see her on broadway as part of a show but wouldn't want to see a whole concert. The Millers got the whole audience up and moving. They are stars, great showmen, great singers and omg....that harmonica. I don't think there has ever been another harmonica player like that in the history of harmonica playing. There's some other great talent on the show but those 2 kids are head and shoulders above any of the adults. I like Bianca, but I really want to see someone that isn't another karaoke style singer who doesn't write or play an instrument win.

Too bad they didn't do a sound check before they started. The loud harmonica befuddled the sound engineer and it took quite a while to correct the gain. Much of the early part of his performance was barely audible (after that monumental opening).
Interestingly (to me, anyway), I don't recall noticing if the the older brother had any talent with his vocals or guitar playing. I was so taken with the enormity of the younger brother's harmonica, and the inversely miniscule talent of his vocal performance, nothing else registered!
I've never heard a harmonica sound quite like that before. HEN HAO TING!!!

I think the singing thing was just the show's sound engineer; I saw a clip of LD Miller on youtube.com and man, can he sing too, but his harmonica playing is beyond all comprehension.

I agree with you so much. Those kids blew me away. Now, I don't quite think they had the greatest singing voices but they sure knew how to work a crowd. I am a performer myself and I was brought to tears during Bianca's performance. She is incredibly talented but I think she would do much better on broadway, for now. But yeah, The Millers were spectacular. Once I heard the younger one playing that harmonica, I was thinking "Holy crap, he just blew John Popper out of the water." And thats a pretty hard thing to do.

I agree. Yes, the harmonica playing was pretty amazing (and maybe if he did some kind of solo he might get somewhere), but because he's in a "group act" and the rest of the "group" wasn't great at all - that blows it for me. He's good, but the whole package isn't...and that makes a difference.

I was thinking the same thing. The harmonica player shreds, but the other half of the duo is just kinda there. If the guitar player/singer was on the same level I think they would have a shot at winning, but as it is I don't see them getting past round 2.

I think the problem is that 2 minute format. With a solo voice, all the focus is there and you can easily show off your best and the sound guy is going to get it right, but what do you do when you have 2 great voices, a great guitar player, and harmonica skill that is beyond belief, and a sound guy that was asleep at the wheel with all that. How do you feature all that in 2 minutes. I'm no longer a musician, but my ear tells me there is a whole lot more there and they have the depth and showmanship to hang on to an audience, where the girl singer is more of a flash in the pan. For me, it also comes back to not wanting this to just be another American Idol singer. I want something more, and these guys clearly have it. I also read somewhere on here that NBC couldn't get them permission to do any of the songs they submitted and they had to come up with something last minute. I saw the 12 year old LD Miller on an underground Youtube clip just singing acapella and was blown away by his singing. I may be wrong, but I think we'll be blown away more by their second appearance.

Are you serious? Taylor is a great singer, but he is not remotely in this kid's league on harmonica. According to the band's website, the kid's been touring with his family since he was like 8 and has been and working more than Taylor ever did before he got his break with Idol, so I don't really think he's patterned himself off of someone he'd never heard of until a couple of months ago. Plus he's been doing 5 shows a week the past year, so he probably never saw Idol before.
If you know anything about harmonica, this kid isn't copying anyone....he is harmonica genius and is inventing stuff no one has ever seen. Found the site at www.claytonmillerband.com. I just ordered the family's CD.

I do know a bit about the harmonica. I am sure the younger Miller can play very well. Its just that I did not hear it last night. It was a bit eratic, even if he is trying his own style.
Better than Taylor? You have hardly had the chance to listen to what he can do with the harmonica, just a few clips from Idol. Better than Popper? You surely jest.
And for Niels to say it was the best harmonica he has ever heard? I imagine he has never heard John Popper, Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson, Stevie Wonder (chromatic), or the myriad of other great Harp players that are out there.
On top of that both of them could not sing.
I will keep watching, hoping he will play something that will change my mind. Until then there are plenty of other great acts.

These guys really rock out...I've seen many harmonica players in my lifetime and I really believe that LD not only has talent now, but that it can only develop in the next few years. Heck, if these guys were making records, I'd buy them --
Aside from LD's talent and prospective future playing the harp which will SURELY take him far, these guys are different from all of the regular groups on the show - Many of the performers don't bring special qualities to the table however some of the acapella stuff is good (i like juggling too!) and I think that the Millers are special in a way that they evoke a different emotion/feeling per se. These guys have been touring extensively from what I've found and I think that they stand out above other acts on the show.
The video of LD jamming with Joe Bonamassa on youtube is great evidence of LD's gift - He really rocks out and he's up there because he deserves to be there!
I can't wait to see these guys perform again - Give them a chance, they work hard....and the soundguy needs some coffee! He'll get it right next time.
If you want to check out the youtube videos, go here: There is one with LD and Taylor Hicks and another of LD playing with Joe.

glad to see so many people saw past the obvious sound issues. Those Miller brothers are freaking unbelievable. I just watched that Bonamassa footage and saw that yep, he does know how to slow it down and feel it. BUt I guess since the show only gives them like 90 seconds, he has to show off the fast stuff...ha ha. I mean in 90 seconds, you can't exactly do both, ya know....And show off the singing and the guitar. They sure have a lot going on. I saw the band footage on youtube too and the one on the guitar on the show is apparently normally the drummer...that's some skill. Wish they'd put the whole band on, but I guess Idol likes em young.

Why do you keep bashing the girl singers all over the boards.Have you competed against the 11 yr old or 14 yr old somewhere before or are you a parent of a singer that competed against them before. It seems that you may know them and are trying to bash the singers out of jealousy?Anyone else think so? these girl singers are sooo young they are not flashes in a pan they have their whole life! What are you talking about???? I think Bianca is fantastic and I've said so in several places. I think Alexis was also quite good. I'm sure that you are mistaking me for one of those folks out there who think it's appropriate to criticize child performers. I haven't once said anything negative about her, nor would I. I love her. I've been singing the praises of several child performers, so I'm quite confused by your attack.
What I have said is that like a lot of other folks, I am tired of there being 25 competitions for singers and this is the first big one for all of these other great acts that also need a break. The closest thing to criticism of a singer I've said is wondering if the cute little yodeller can really hold attention over several numbers, but I liked her too. She is about 5th on my list right now. I won't vote for a singer to win, but I think BR is amazing and will go far. As for questioning motives, I was at one point in my life a successful opera singer over 20 years ago and my child is far too young at 4 to think about what she wants to be and no one in my family currently performs anything. But I am simulataneously drawn to this show by my love of the Arts and have a tremendous appreciation for people who sacrifice hugely and develop a craft for many years, so I have strong feelings about giving the biggest breaks to those kind of artists that seem to evidence that to me. I do the same with my CD choices...I typically buy artists who write their own material and play their own instrument, so yes, I'm not a big fan of Idol for that reason. But you should check my posts a little more closely before you make that kind of petty attack. I think Bianca is great and I look forward to seeing her on Broadway...I would buy a ticket...I just personally don't want to vote for another singer only for this show.
lastcomicfan2
Jul 9 2006, 09:52 PM
that was kind of strange. There's a lot of people seriously bashing Bianca, so talentedgirls obviously has you confused with someone else. I haven't seen CallieK "bashing" anyone, unless saying you want to vote for someone other than a singer is bashing. I happen to agree with that sentiment. But did see you ironically, TG, bash the 12 yo Miller's singing....funny. I hope the kid sings next time and shows Piers and you how wrong he is. Maybe it was the song or the sound, but the other footage I've seen of him singing on youtube was great. He seems a triple threat with singing and being a charming little showman, but the harmonica playing is so over the top it overshadows his other obvious skills.
Anyway, Talented Girls, I think you might have your posters confused.

I thought they were both great, but LD is more exciting to watch than 90% of what is on TV. His musical talent is unquestionable but I think what blows me away even more is his showmanship at this age. He is confident, passionate, soulful, energetic. I also thought they were very funny together in the interview segment....very down to earth.
I loved them. Way to go Millers.

YES imaginess !!
That harmonica playing excuse for a harmonica player has NO
timing,
phrasing,
control,
context,
or
STYLE-
American Idol Taylor Hicks does, but apparently he wasn't the popular vote. Either way, these shows are a poor way to gauge talent with unqualified judges. I see the Millers have a large family obviously voting and praising them here, but as a harmonica player myself, I had 'sound issues'- I COULDN'T TURN DOWN MY TV LOUD ENOUGH or yell at my TV to influence the greatest singer of all time; David Hasselhoff. Apparently these judges aren't qualified. After the first performance by the Millers, I couldn't believe that was 'the best harmonica player' Niels 'EVER heard'.
Apparently they never heard Little Walter, Paul Butterfield, Paul deLay, Kim Wilson, William Clark, Rod Piazza, Stevie Wonder, Sonny Boy Williamson (#2, aka Rice Miller), Jerry Portnoy, Howard Levy, David Barret, ,Roger Edsel,David Galloway, Big Boy Little, J.L. Frinks, even John Popper is better than
that Miller kid who stepped ALL OVER the songs on this show!
Do America a favor : Vote for the magicians with the quick wardrobe change, or Alexis Jordan, who did a fair version of at last, even though she may want to choose a song more appropriate for her vocal ability.

Again, I'm with Dave on this one. This kid is not that great. Good showman? yes but he's a marginal harmonica player. I can't believe some of the accolades being laid at his feet here. Doing stuff that's never been done before? Blow John Popper out of the water? Please.... This kid probably has some potential but he has a long way to go before he realizes it. If you people were blown away by him try listening to some of he players Dave mentioned and hold on to your seats. I've talked to a few people in the harmonica world since the first round they played on and without exception they're all shaking there heads, not in amazement but in wondering what all he fuss is about. It's a big world out there folks. Turn off the TV and go out and see some of it. You'll be amazed at what you find.

Yeah they rock, Cole is usually the drummer and he blows my mind away when hes on there. Hes self-taught and its simply amazing.
Whoever said that 90 seconds isnt alot of time, it isn't. They usually have 2-3 hours to show off their stuff and I think they did a great job in 90 seconds.
And PLEASE stop dissing them, LD is freakin awesome, espesically for an 11yearold and Cole is awesome, no matter what he does, but hes usually a drummer. I cried so hard when they told LD to drop Cole. Very upsetting.
I hope they win, I hope the judges see what they really are which is incredible!!!

Hmm, let's see who must not have talent. Anyone can sing in that "raspy & rough" style. That is NOT singing. You do not get lessons to learn how to do THAT! There are two voices you sing in--head and chest... Notice "throat" is not one of those choices. To do anything other is NOT truly singing. It requires NO true talent to sing outside of those two voices.

Taylor's cute and she's got a real feel for yodeling. But she's not going to get far in the industry by JUST yodeling.
LD ALREADY is a seasoned performer who garners the praise of well-respected music industry professionals.

Personally I loved that cute dog act. In fact they were so good, that NBC is going to have them starring in their own tv show along with Paris Hilton. The name of the show? Doggie Style.
NOT!
Go Millers!

Hi Callie,
You've got THAT right! Check out my topic "english judge is a heartless..." to see how much I and others agree. I would go see that kid play in a minute. With all the bad news about kids...here is a kid that represents all the good kids...by being a phenomenol talent. Piers has no place to be judging anybody...he has not the sense. If that kid is 'not' a star then what is he????? Amazing talent does not always find a way. I am glad HE is.

OMG THEY ARE TRASH !!!!!!! im sorry but their singing was horrible, their image was complete crap, the guitar playin was not even decent, and the harmonica is the easiest instrument to play.. in case you didnt know harmonicas only come in scales. what this means is that is the song they are playing is ,lets say in the key of Eb, you just grab the Eb harmonica and blow in it.. you cant hit a wrong note on it any idiot can just grab a harmonica in the same key of a song and just blow and move your mouth around. im sorry but thay have no talent. i play guitar better than them and i dont even consider myself a guitar player, and i hella sing way better than them and im not a singer. but i do kill them on the piano though.. i destroy them if im on my piano or drums
