Full Version: Brandy was right!

Judging from the audience's reaction to Brandy's critiques of Sugar and Spice and N'Versity, some of you will disagree with me on this one: Brandy was right.

Sugar and Spice, as cute as they are, were extremely amateurish - bad singing, bad dancing. She was right; they need training and time to develop. I have seen better talent in my days of judging community kids' talent shows. That they are a big family in need of a new home is heart rending, but not worth giving them the $1 M prize.

N'Versity are a En Vogue rip off and OK as an act, but not great. They didn't do much to wow me. And the costuming was AWFUL. Brandy was right - they're too young to dress like tarts. He over-sexualization of MTV has so pervaded our culture that young girls think it's OK to dress provocatively even though they are basically "jail bait" age! That the men were salivating is further proof that the costume selection was not age-appropriate. If Hasselhof had a 16 year old daughter, I am sure he would not like a bunch of middle aged men (like him) ogling her...which is what he and Piers were doing.

Speaking of age appropriate, how about the two young female singers (Bianca and the other one who sang "At Last" last week - the song, not the group) from previous weeks? I am sick and tired of seeing pre-pubescents singing songs that are vocally and thematically WAY too mature for them. They're possibly damaging their voices by pushing them to have a weight they don't normally have at that age. And they're singing songs with topics and lyrics that are way beyond their realm of experience.

In short - let kids be kids! Don't rush young girls into being women before their time.

I don't Disagree. I think that although cute and story is heart wrenching there were better acts that got passed over to allow Suger and Spice to Perform. Their act looked like a Church or School Tallent show performance.

N'versity was ok and although their outfits were a little grown up for them I think they were just costumes.

Just my 2 cents

Here, Here!!!!

Just a bit of history for the ADD generation:
Brandi and Brittany are the same age. While Brittany was doing the trampy school girl bit in her videos, Brandi was dressed appropriately for her age and self respect. Brandi has continued her self respect into womanhood. She is a fine example for all girls and women.

She walked the talk folks!

If you want to be a pole dancer then be a pole dancer. Please just stop expecting me to accept you as a singer...

Yes I agree, I like the mothers pitch about how it is hard for them to find a home in the pre-show bit, maybee someone will help them out, I hope anyway.

Sugar and Spice, though cute and look like a closely nit family, they do need work, Brandi however could have eased up on the insult peddal a little. These are kids, I am sure their feelings were tremendously hurt by one of thier possible idols. When she was arguing with the british dude saying and I quote "Ya, but I can sing"... Well Brandi, your you own biggest fan, you could have cut those kids a litte slack...

The trio vocal group should have dressed a little more appropriately, if they continue to go down that dress code road they will have to change thier name from "N'Versity" to "The Prostitots". And the two male judges wooing over them like they did was just not right, makes you wonder what's on thier hard drives?

Anyway, the show lacked talent plain and simple, I mean bring back the sub act guy, you know "the Texan who kicks himself in the head" I mean this was more entertaining the 99% of the talent we saw this week.

Step up AGT earn the cash....

dude, it doesnt matter. age, it doesnt matter. sides, it would be better than to have a age restriction. if they want to do it, let them do it! thats what i would say.

like i said, who cares? they're the same gender as women, so why care about them? if they want to wear it, let them wear it. you cant tell them anything what to do. let them decide.

Well brandy was right suger n spice were not all that good and 1/2 of the kids were not even singing and I think they were put in there for the pitty vote like for the people who would say ohhh they are so cute I'm going to vote and really there is very little talent but they are cute and N'Versity was bad there outfits where to grown and they don't have any chemestry it seemed like the two back round singers were off beat with each other and the lead singer was trying too hard to steal the show and If someone offered her a deal with only her she would leave her two band mates behind so if they want to go anywhere in music then they need voice lessens and to get some chemistry

Sugar and Spice were so bad I had to change the channel. N'versity, ? Well, Brandy was right about the one girl looking too risque, however, you couldn't help but notice that she looked fantastic in those short shorts. Perhaps if she had worn shoes that were just a little lower.....The other two girls in the group were covered up,so I assume Brandy was just directing her criticism at the girl on the right.

I agree with some of your statments. The sisters were cute but not too talented. The little girl who did the comedy was way too young to be speaking that way. The way the singers were dressed is just the way girls dress these days. Im sure your parents didnt approve of the way you dressed sometimes. As for Bianca, She is a great talent. She is not going to damage her voice. do you think she is the only singer who started singing at such a young age? Alot of singers today started out when they were children and still sing today.
she is going to be a huge star no matter if she wins this silly show or not.

Actually there is a chance Bianca could damage her voice. My daughter is the same age, and has been told not to push it when she sings. By pushing it I mean "belting" it the way Bianca does. What can happen? The worst case scenario is she develops nodules on her vocal cords, and won't be able to sing at all. So many kids are being pushed nowadays that it is happening more and more, but unless you are involved with music the way we are you wouldn't even know about this.

Not all girls dress that way today, just the slutty ones who are trying to look 25 when they're only 15. Sad, sad, sad. They looked downright slutty (not to mention tacky and ugly - although I'll own that one girl had killer legs, shown off in mini-mini shorts).

Unfortunately, there is a huge rush in our culture to push young people (women, especially) toward a maturity they just don't posess - sartorially as well as vocally. The music business in general is especially guilty of this, pushing for younger and younger talent. It used to be that musicians would develop themselves and thier talent, and THEN build a career. Nowadays it seems you have to be under 19 to be a "breakout" these days. It's all part of a culture of youth worship. And with that goes the sexualization of young girls via the MTV video phenomenon.

Yes, every generation disapproves of the next's music, clothing, mores, etc., but a line has to be drawn. These girls are practically JAIL BAIT.

As a vocal teacher and professional singer, I assure you that Bianca CAN and LIKELY MAY damage her voice by pushing it to be too "dark", too "heavy" too early. Vocal cords are very fragile and devlop polyps or nodes that require surgery (many of these started-young singers drop out for a time and undergo this surgery and long rehabilitation). Bianca has talent, that's not in dispute. If she does go on, I pray she gets a good vocal teacher to prevent her hurting herself and forshortening her career.
