so it's been anywhere from 85 to 109 in the part of san diego where I live, and where I work it's extremely muggy and sticky (90*F with 69% humidity today). So... we keep our office nice and cool with air conditioning. Lately, though, the front desk manager, who is always cold, keeps changing the temp! she will put it at like 78 (yech!) and the other girls, myself included, prefer it between 73 and 75. So... the past few days we've been sneaking over there when the other isn't looking, and switching i tback to where we want it. The funny thin is though, our AC is weird... sometimes it jumps to random settings for no apparent reason (like when I was the one to turn it off the night before, and the one to turn it on in the morning, and it's different)... long story short, I went to set the AC, and when I pressed the "down" button to set the temp, it was at 69... so I thought of Kevin... tongue.gif

So you guys must be the ones causing the blackouts in California ;-)
receptionist
funny you should mention that... the other day, when it was 109, our resort had a blackout--everywhere except the office! I had to deal with six hours of people asking me about the frickin electric... stupid spoiled old people. most of them are from AZ--why are they complaning about no AC?!!?!? **sigh** the power there was out from 12:30 saturday afternoon, to 7:30 sunday morning. that was just tons of customer service fun. the transformer had blown, and SDG&E (san diego gas & electric) had to replace it. and we had to call them like 5 times to get it done, and each time they acted like it was the first they had heard of it! morons. then they ahd the nerve to tell us that they weren't having any blackouts in the area (even though we heard of two other resorts and a mall blacking out), and that it was just us... anyways. that was fun. but at least I got to keep my AC goin!!!!! lol. laugh.gif wink.gif
muffyduffy
Wow...I really touched a nerve there! Sorry! (let's keep that "stupid spoiled old people" to ourselves. Diapers is a bit sensitive about his hair loss these days....)
receptionist
I meant no offense. love old(er) people. I just can't stand it when anyone, of any age, acts like they're the center of the universe and they'll give everyone heck until they get their way. It just so happens that a lot of retirees stay at my resort.
scarlett_jem
This is why I think it's better to have it cold in the office than warm.

It's always easier for a person who's cold to put on a sweater/lightweight jacket when it's cold. If it's hot in the office I can't take off my shirt. Though some of the pervs would like that! rolleyes.gif
Gareth_Schrute_1
I agree jem, like oscar, I'm more efficient when I'm cold. But I'm a total wreck when I'm hot and sweaty. (though dang sexy)

When I saw the thermostat battle scene on The Office, it reminded me of my old job. I worked in a small office of 4 people - two of us preferred it cold, the other two liked it HOT. Needless to say, the BOSS who liked it warm won out!

He wouldn't even turn on ANY A/C, even during the summer! I resorted to bringing in a fan for my desk but that just blew the hot air around and dried out my eyes. Occasionally I'd call in sick on the really hot days...just to bust his chops.

At my current job, I share an office with one other person, but now I'M the boss! I set the A/C where I want it, but I'm not mean about it. I always ask my assistant if she's too cold and will adjust it if she says she is. But we get along about the temp.

Just goes to show you, that as silly as some of the situations on The Office are, it really does reflect real office life!
imagineifiwerederanged
My coworkers and I are in a constant ac battle. It's getting really old too.
Drop-a-Deuce
I'm currently in Afghanistan, where it hasn't rained since March and it's averaging about 110 during the day. I live in a mud-brick hut with a plywood roof with 4 other soldiers, and at the time we had two "Chigo" wall a/c's and an oscillating fan. During the day and early evening it gets very hot in there, even with the air conditioners trying their best. The deal-breaker to stay cool enough to sleep is the fan.

I work the day-ish shift, and the guy the next cot over (by the fan) works afternoon-until-crack of dawn-ish, and we had a constant battle of fan-direction, which usually occured while the other guy was asleep. I'd come in, sneak over and point the fan in my direction, but every morning when I got up, it would be pointed back at him (and his cot is next to the outlet, so it's about 6 inches from his head). This passive-aggressive battle went on for weeks until I recently raided a fan from the mechanics area. So, I was happy for a couple of days, until the circuit breaker started tripping every 20 minutes from the overload. I am on a tiny base in the middle of nowhere, so we only have the fuel to run one large generator. So, that was a little futile.

The problem got fixed, so it's mostly bearable now but it just goes to show that you dont need to be in a conventional office to have A/C wars!
Stapler
Wow! Drop-a-Deuce...I feel guilty for complaining about my A/C battles in my cushy office! Battling over 71 vs. 77...jeez! I feel terrible after reading what you're up against!

Sending "cool" thoughts your way!
mattsbug
I work at home (my hubby and I both do) and I wish we had an a/c to have wars with haha... it has been so hot in San Diego the past week (getting up to 109 here) we're running our in-wall a/c whenever we are awake... but! In the car, that's a different story, it is a costant battle with the a/c (again, except for in this rediculous heat haha)
receptionist
matts--what part of SD you from? I'm in south bay, and even here it's been triple digits! And I'm 1 mile from the bay!!! this is not good for us san diego people who are accustomed to our 350 days per year of 74 degrees and light breezes... we're wimps!!!! tongue.gif

a) I think it's so funny that the first thing you thought of was Kevin.

2) Our corporate big-wigs have neutralized the whole debate by putting locks on the thermostats. There's only one keymaster = the facilities management company. So basically we're all screwed by THE MAN.

Ok, so were getting way off topic now haha...

yech! you must be ROASTING in poway. at least you get to work by the beach for a while... although, I work at a resort on the bay, and it's hot even there.this is ridiculous! I'm gonna have to get em an air conditioner for my bedroom by august!!! even a ghetto one would be nice in this mugginess.

Aww, come on! I wasn't even here to defend myself!

Speaking of the folically challenged: A friend of mine insists that whatever Steve Carrel had done to his hair between seasons one and two is really working for him. I think he's just combing it differently, 'cause it looks the same to me now as it did on The Daily Show and in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but I won't rule out that he may have had some work done. I'll have to ask him next time I see him.

I am stupid, spoiled and old...and ornery and opinionated.

Drop a Deuce - Thanks, bud. I couldn't do it.

Half of the air conditioning in my house is broken. Only the downstair's AC works, this normally would be ok, but my computer is upstairs so now i have to choose between Air conditioning and posting on this board.

Should I send you some bran muffins?

(P.S. I only said that because you weren't here to defend yourself, but I think male patterned baldness adds a look of sophistication and class...of course, you did just mention dropping a deuce, so I guess that ruled that out. You're now just old and bald.)

I'm all about sophistication and class. Raisin Bran keeps me more regular than Kevin.

I was referring to DaD volunteering to serve in our armed forces. I would have shot my foot off in basic...not on purpose.

I'll get us back on track. Shaving my head in summer keeps me cooler.

Hey, Drop-a-Deuce be careful over there, all of you in the Middle East need to get home safely, thanks for protecting the states, and helping all of the innocent people over there.

It's hot almost everywhere this summer. It's even been unusually hot in the Midwest. It's just not a fun summer when you prefer being inside with air conditioning, rather than outside in the sun. I can't wait for my beautiful fall weather.

Hey, I like most old people too, but I lived in South Florida for 9 years, and old people who don't have anything better to do will compalin about everything!!!! I can't believe they were even complaining about being hot. Old people are always cold. I was a manager at a Macy's and we couldn't keep white cardigans in stock. That's why Pam's grandma cardigans get on my nerves - I still have nightmares and flashbacks.

Given that we are from so many different places, and given that weather, at least in my neck of the woods, has been strange lately... I've decided to add a weather topic.

So here's my first weather comment:

I live in San Diego. It is normally very warm here in socal, even in winter. But this winter has been very different... It snowed in San Diego. And not just in the mountains, either. It snowed about 5 miles from my house. And I live only about 2 miles inland from the beach.

Also... it snowed in Malibu. yes, you read that right. Malibu. And it actually stuck! They plowed the streets.

weather is strange.
suengmina
Lucky, how come you get snow? I live in northern California and all we get is below freezing temperature

I hate winter. Hate it. Especially when it's freezing, but not snowing. The snow kind of makes the cold nice. BUT NOT TODAY.

Have I sucked the happy out of your day yet?
bubblewrap_1
It's so cold here today! It's about 35 out and the wind is blowing at about 20mph- which makes it feel even colder outside. They are calling for possible snow/sleet tomorrow night- we'll see. I'm just waiting for spring and summer to come biggrin.gif

I live in Missouri and we just got a major snow/ice storm, and there's another one coming! my driveway is a sheet of ice. I love living here because we get every range of weather there is. In the summer it gets up to the 100's and we still have winters like this. You guys in California must be freaking out!
John Denver
Yeah, I live in So Cal as well and it's been freeeeeeezing here. I can't take it anymore! I want the SUN!

I live in Colorado and it has been in the freezing temperatures lately. At the moment it is 20. This is sadly a very a high temperature for this week. It is not snowing now, although it has snowed lately. It would be nice if it snowed because then I might actually go out and ski. (as a local you get picky about what days to ski)

yes. we are spoiled here, and this whole COLD thing... is just weird to us. I've had ice on my windshield a few times, and that was strange. And then snow?!? it hasn't snowed in this area in about 20 years. weird.

I feel kinda guilty about this but I just got back from the South Florida Fair in West Palm Beach and it was sunny and in the upper 70's. Winter is the only good thing about Florida! Here's some pics:

I live in Phoenix and it has been pretty cool. It also sprinkled all day yesterday. No snow, but we are up pretty high here, so.... Last time it snowed was when i was like 4. We do get hail that can sometimes look like snow. But that is in the summer.

and normally it is snowing alot .. but we have only gotten like 2 inches of snow , and that came last night

Boston has been unusually warm for winter until last week. It is seasonally cold and very windy here today. Our temps here were actually higher than southern cal. temps for a couple of days after Christmas. I think the unusual weather is due to El Nino disruptions in the atmospheric flow across the continent. (I ought to put the tilde above the second n in Nino, but not sure how both as it's correct to do so and also in honor of Mexican lemonade)

I've got 13 degrees in Mid-Michigan. Not really windy though, so no wind chill. It's not horrible. But I'm glad to be in for the night.

This is ours. We had flurries this afternoon. The temperature for tomorrow isn't horrible- but there are suppose to be 25-35 mph winds and a wind chill in the teens.
Officeholic
The temps do not include wind chill either. We are in the Laurel Highlands, between two mountain ranges, where storms go back & forth.
