hey party people,

whilst we all love raining praise on one of the greatest shows of all time, i have one quesstion that haunts me and needs to be answered. or if it can be. it may be just one of those things.

Kate Harper, hot, smart and could probably kick anyones arse, was in a room with toby talking to the two chinese diplimats before they received a call about the president excepting the taiwan flag etc. the phone rings and the guys speaks chinese/mandarin (surprisingly!!) then they both leave room. toby says he believed you couldn't receive calls over mobiles, kate said you can't.

anyway

in the episode where the presidents becomes paralysed in beijing, kate is conversing in chinese with the dude about getting the hydraulic lift to loweer the president.

she seems pretty fluent. so my question is why couldn't she understand what the dude was saying in the roosevelt room??

you could almost hear the x-files music coming in the background.

I'm not sure that Kate didn't understand what they were saying, but she was only hearing one side of the coversation, which would obviously make it very hard for her to know exactly what was going on. I don't think that they guys said much on the phone.

Also could depend on the region of China, my boyfriend is from South China and the dialect there is much diff then the north and he has a hard time understanding Chinese people from the North. so perhaps Kate is fluent in one regions and they were from another region.

neuro: I'm not totally convinced. Later in episode with two Chinese diplomats, Toby and her are in Leo's office telling him what happened. She never mentioned it, especially when CJ (i think) came into Leo's room saying the chinese are not having some sort of talks with the US cos of some incident with the Taiwan flag. it just seems strange that Kate or anyone asked her.

"Impact Winter" is the eppy where Kate speaks Mandarin on Air Force One. Toby shows surprise at her language skills and Kate says it's only second grade vocabulary. When Toby asks if terms like hydraulic lift and some other technical term I don't recall are second grade vocabulary Kate says that in China they are. My point is, who knows how fluent Kate really is.

Of course, this would not be the first or last time that TWW sacrificed consistency for a storyline.
