I don't know that one, but does anyone know the song Lyla was singing in the car on the way to state when she broke down? I tried searching the lyrics I remembered, but I can't find it.

Can someone tell me if the Lucinda Williams song, "Are You Alright", ever used on the show FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS? I think it was in part because I heard it somewhere else yesterday and I do not listen to much country music, and I THINK I may have first been exposed to this song while watching FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS? Can someone please tell me if this is indeed the case, and if so, in which episode was it used? I do not have the time to go back and check every episode by watching it through and through, but I think the show is great and that song has been haunting me - in a beautiful way - and I want to find out if my exposure to it could have indeed been while watching FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS!

If someone could either post and let me know if I am right or wrong, and / or if you could contact me by e-mail and let me know, and if I am right, if you could tell me what episode it was used in, I would be greatly appreciative!

Thanx for a great season,

Hi, thanks for this. I thought I saw at the bottom of the screen on a recent episode that there is a "Friday Night Lights" soundtrack? Anyone know anything about this, where to buy it, etc. Such terrific music and maybe it's about licensing and budget, but when you have to work for something instead of grabbing Justin Timberlake or John Mayer (such a large head) off the shelf, what you glean and compile can be (and here is) pretty terrific.
Love the show.

What song was playing during the first half of the state game?

Anyone find the title of the song from the gatlin game yet?

Anyone know where I can find a copy of The Tony Lucca version of Devil town? I tried i-tunes and his own web site, but can't find it. His site has a blurb about it being on FNL but it is more for his fans to watch the show to hear him than anything else.

Where can we get a copy? I like it better than the Bright Eyes version.

I got Bright Eyes - Devil Town off soulseek and it is exactly the same as the one being used in FNL. Should try it.

You should all get the original "devil town" by Daniel Johnston...

kids these days.
JWM111111
If you have the jones for some good FNL music, run down to your local music store and buy the music soundtrack CD from the "Friday Night Lights" movie. The same music was used throughout the TV series. All but one of the 14 tracks is that now-familiar haunting guitar music from the band Explosions in the Sky. These are non-vocal, instrumental pieces but they will do the trick for you. The music gives me goosebumps because it immediately makes me think of the show. This CD is playing in my car whenever I drive and I can see the scenes from the show in my head that match certain musical pieces. I will warn you though, playing this CD will make you jones for the next episode even more. That was OK up until now, but it is a long time until October.

It is awesome music...give it a try.

In addition to a DVD for season 1 that evertone wants, it would be really cool if if they compiled a CD with all the great music from the show. The show used such a broad spectrum of music beyond the Explosions in the Sky guitar music that it would be great to be able to buy that CD as well. You can look at the various threads on this board and see that there is tremendous interest in the music from FNL. So if the producers want to make a little more money they ought to do it.

In the meantime try the musical soundtrack from the movie. You'll like it.

it seems explosions in the sky do alot of the FNL songs, search for them

For the last time, it's not the Bright Eyes' version on the show.

The folks at FNL wanted Bright Eyes' version, but Conor Oberst won't release any of his songs for TV or commercial use, so they had someone they know record it for the show, and that someone was Tony Lucca. That's why it's not available anywhere (currently,) because it was recorded just for the show.

I think it would've been great if they'd just used Daniel Johnston's original recording, but it's probably too much to expect for a show battling for viewers. At least Daniel was compensated for it, though.

I remember when Target had Mary Lou Lord (re)record a version of Daniel Johnston's "Speeding Motorcycle" for a commercial, and she begged them to use Daniel's original version, but in the end she agreed to do it:

“Yeah, I got this call from the Target people and that was so weird! They said they wanted to use my version of 'Speeding Motorcycle' in a commercial and I asked why didn’t they just use Daniel’s original version. Well, they said they weren’t interested in that, and I said well, what about Yo La Tengo’s then? They said no again and finally I asked, So, are you not interested in using the song at all if you can’t use my version then? They said yep, that’s the deal, so I figured well, at least this way Daniel would get some publishing money and since he’s so wonderful I told them yes, they could use my version of the song. It's a shame, though - the commercials came out the week of 9/11, and for some reason relating to that they didn't get aired nearly as much as was originally planned. Still, Daniel means so much to me, I just hope I helped him out in some way!”

If you like the "Devil Town" song at all, you should perhaps check out the great documentary that came out last year on Johnston called The Devil and Daniel Johnston. It could be my favorite music documentary of all time (battling Buena Vista Social Club)

Great job everyone, I would like to keep this post bumped until I am able to compile a good FNL mix CD. Great music on this show.

I know that Stoned O started a thread on this topic on Thursday, but it got off track and it is an interesting topic.

In ep. 2 (Eyes Wide Open) which aired on 10/10/06, the song Devil Town started playing during a meeting between Coach and Buddy in Buddy's office at the dealership. Buddy was basically telling Coach that he'd better win this upcoming game. This was similar to the seen in the FNL movie when the character played by the same actor as Buddy is sitting in his corvette convertable when the coach and his wife and daughter come out of the grocery store and the Buddy charcter says "you better get it done" and coach (Billy Bob Thornton) says "or what?" and the Buddy character says "or what? You won't like what happens if you lose coach."

Any way in the TV show Coach Taylor has been sweating over how he can win with Matt at quarterback. He tells Tami that he can't do it and he complains about "this town" and its expectations. At the meeting with Buddy, Buddy says "what this town needs is a big fat W" Right then Devil Town starts playing and plays through the end of the episode which ends with the kickoff of the second game of the season (which in ep. 3 the Panthers lose).

So the way I took the song was that in Coach Taylor's mind he had taken on the head coach's job in Devil Town. He was surrounded by vampires.

In the final ep. of the season the song was replayed during the parade, after winning state, during talk radio call-ins that was critical of coach, during Jason's speech to the team.

What was this second playing of Devil Town telling us? At first I saw it as "OK we won state...everybody is happy...it is a different town than in ep.2. No longer a devil town" Then after thinking about it I thought "This is confirmation that Dillon is Devil Town. The vampires just drank their blood (winning state) and they are all happy at the moment, but already people are finding fault with coach for leaving, ('I shook that man's hand once and thought he had a heart') and already Jason was taking on the role of head coach and the team was listening to him as if he could take them to the next blood feeding because Coach Taylor can't."

Then the song stops, there is silence, and one guy (Matt) starts to clap for Coach Taylor and is soon joined be the rest of the team. So what? Coach is still thinking it's devil town up until Matt starts clapping, then he realizes that it isn't devil town? Does Matt clapping mean that he digested what Julie had told him about coach caring about the team and always watching film and talking about the individual players? Is this the team appreciating the coach and what he had done and not holding it against him for following his dream?

Why play Devil Town twice under two very different scenarios?

Ideas?

I'm not sure on the lyrical symbolism, I just took it that they chose the song to bring things full circle. wWe heard the song in the beginning of the series. Now we're hearing it in the season finale. It's funny. I have had that dang song in my head since wednesday night!!

Tony Lucca's version is nearly impossible to find though, which IMO is the best version, I was listening to him on YouTube and he's got talent.

I totally agree with your take on it. It was kind of a way of saying, sure, everyone all happy right now, but that doesn't change the very nature of the town. Unless it means that Coach has become one of the vampires himself. I mean, think about it. According to some on the team and in the town (via talk radio) Coach sucked what he could out of the town (State Championship to add to his resume) and now he's getting ready to leave them high and dry.

But I'm probably way over thinking this! ;-)
thipsher
A part of the song says
"All my friends were vampires
Didn't know they were vampires
Turns out I was a vampire myself
In Devil Town"

I think this is the reason why the song is played at the end of the finale. Coach Taylor realized he turned into what he hated most about the town. This realization is going to be what causes him to decide to stay in Dillon.

We're number one, not two, not three, not four

Yeah -- That's it! Coach is a vampire too. Tami gets it. She is in Dillon for a reason. Julie gets it. She's in Dillon for a reason. Coach hadn't gotten it until that very last scene it the locker room. Suddenly it dawned on him. It isn't about football as an end...it's about football as a means to an end. Football is the tool to teach these boys how to be men...good men. I think he gets it now.

I have to disagree with that. I don't think the larger possibilities of teaching the boys how to be good men and using football as a means to and end was a sudden realization for Coach Taylor at the end of the episode. I think that aspect of football is something he knew all along, is a very part of his love for the game. I think that's what has always made him such a great coach.

Look at Jason Street; Coach Taylor pretty much taught him all he knows. Everything that Street has handled (so incredibly well, considering)... I think a lot of that can be attributed to things Coach Taylor taught him BEFORE the show even starts.

If I were to read into the use of that song: I don't think Coach Taylor has become what he hated about the town or has come to a realization that football is merely a means to an end. A lot of thought seems to be putting a lot of weight on the "vampire" aspect of bad and blood-sucking, etc.

I don't think that's really what it's about. I think the use of "vampire" can be a symbol of anyone who is different or has different values. I think that, if anything, Coach Taylor has realized that despite the negative aspects of the town, it is full of not vampires, but people. People who are complex, who may often to stupid, ignorant, or irritating things... but who, ultimately, are good. As is Coach Taylor. He is one of them, because he is human. So he may fit into the town better than he first thought (or when he first saw more of the negative aspects of those around him).

Those are just some rambling thoughts and I'm not wholly sure what I'm going on about.. just typing as i think... might not agree with this later. :-)

Hello all, I'm coming in with a challenge/request, since I haven't been able to find this info ANYwhere.

I'm looking for the name of the song playing at the Riggins-house post-game bacchanalia in the opening sequence of "Extended Families". I can't quite catch enough of the lyrics to do a proper Google search, so I haven't had much luck.

Anyone here know the title or the artist?

Thanks!

Whiteotter,

So I listened to the song (as best I could), & I do think that the singer is Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones. That would make sense, especially if the actors have any input in the music. I read an interview somewhere with Taylor Kitsch, & when asked what music he was listening to lately, he said the Rolling Stones.
Now the lyrics...
Here are a few possible scattered phrases

"I can't help myself"
"You look changed (strange?)"
"I get the metal out' or "I get to mellow out"
"You like to rock and roll down"

I could be completely wrong, but if there are any Rolling Stone fans out there.....help!

I was wondering if anyone knew the name of the song that was playing during the FNL season finale when the team was just arriving at Texas Stadium and then went into the lockerroom for the first time and then out on the field. I remember the song being a bit twangy but I thought it was a cool instrumental.

I'm looking for the name of the song playing at the Riggins-house post-game bacchanalia in the opening sequence of "Extended Families". I can't quite catch enough of the lyrics to do a proper Google search, so I haven't had much luck.

Anyone here know the title or the artist?

Thanks!

I just now registered because I had to answer this one...it was driving me crazy too, and I finally remembered it from a cd I had years ago. I'm almost positive it's "Gimme a Chance" by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion off their Acme album (1998) but I can't find the mp3 to verify. Hope this helps!

The music used in this show is great. It would be great for them to incorporate the song Seagulls from Bad Co. that was used in the orignal movie - perhaps on a scene with Riggins as the song applies.

I apologize as I expect this question has already been answered, but I didn't see it.

Could someone tell me the title and/or composer of the music that is used at the beginning and end of each show?

Thanks.

Check out this thread. It covers a lot of the music from the show. I have not read it so I am not sure your question is answered there. smile.gif

Artist is Explosions in the Sky. Someone on here said the opening music is a version of "Remember me as a time of Day," but a variation from the one in the movie. I cannot say for sure myself though.
