So, I have watched my fair share of comedy shows. 30 Rock is an excellent show, very funny and original.
I would like to comments on its music during the show. I am not a music expert, but I can't remember when there was a comedy show that used orchestra music. In my opinion, it adds a real touch of class to the show and makes it stand out quite a bit. Most of those type of music will be heard on dramas like Lost or 24. But its light hearted comedy music makes if feel like an old vaudville or something. Is that even the right way to explain it...anyway.
Most viewers probably don't notice, but its really helps set the mode and tone of the show. I wonder if this was Tina's idea or not.
I also wonder how much this cost the show? I bet if they need to save money..that will be the first to go.

I know its fictional, but did they actually make a Music Video for "Muffin Top"? Bet it would be funny.

It's actually just an instrumental, created for the show. Tina Feys husband Jeff Richmond (who also does music for SNL I believe) is the one that made it for 30 Rock.

Are you talking about the song Lemon sings kareoke to in the club?
That song is
"At Seventeen" by Janis Ian
Hope that helps!!
If not let me know, cause I'm intrigues now lol. Other than that all I can think of is the theme music done by Fey's husband.

The song playing in the background of this ep has me hooked.
Does anyone know who did it/where I could find it?
I think it played mostly in the scenes with L.L. Cool J.

Hi Tina,
I saw you on Regis & Kelly and you mentioned your husband did the music for the show. The theme music is one of my fave parts of the show. It has that hyper 70's sound that gets you in the mood to laugh.
My favorite show was the one with Isabella and Alec talking about the Arby's in their divorce settlement. So hilarious

!
Thanks for the Laughs out Loud and keep up the fantastically hip and funny writing!

I've always liked the way they incorporated music on this show, and this season there have been some montage scenes where I thought the way they handled the music was truly exceptional.
In the MILF Island episode when they had the MILF Island instrumental theme song playing while they cut between scenes of one of the MILFs confessing ("When one of my implants exploded...") and Pete struggling with the vending machine. That was really well done.
And in the Succession episode where there was a montage of Dr. Spaceman racing through 30 Rock wearing a cape, Tracy Jordan was doing his Mozart routine, Kenneth was Mozart's maid, Banks was with the stripper, and Frank was tearing his office apart as Salieri while the Confutatis from Mozart's Requiem was playing was really good too.
To whomever did those arrangements: you're doing a really, really great job.

Tina,
The recent "Mozart" episode was awesome, highlighted by Jeff Richmond's brilliant score. Was the music all newly composed and recorded with a hired orchestra and choir, or was it a mix of newly composed, recorded music and existing recordings of Mozart Requiem.

P.S. I recently met composer Morten Lauridsen, who in part founded the film music school at Southern Cal. I bet he would be very interested to hear the score.

I'd buy the soundtrack, too. Tracks I'd love to listen to:
1. "Liz's Theme" - instrumental based on "Who's That"
2. "Jack's Theme" - not really sure what this is but Jeff Richmond mentioned it in the 2nd season audio commentary
3. "Who's That" - theme of Pam the Morbidly Obese Woman
4. "Werewolf Barmitzvah" - spooky, scary!
5. "Muffin Top"
6. "Midnight Train to Georgia" - recorded by the whole cast
7. "What the World Needs Now" - Alec Baldwin
8. "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire (The Christmas Song) - Jane Krakowski, Alec Baldwin and Elaine Stritch

Dearest Tina,
First off, congrats on all the damn awards! 30 Rock may soon topple the "Best Show Ever" shrine to Arrested Development that exists in my head. Furthermore, Tracy's acceptance speech was maybe my favorite acceptance speech ever. And in response to your speech, there are those of us on the internet who adore you. All the "critics" you mentioned can, as you said, suck it.
Finally, my question is this: I love your husband's music for 30 Rock. I know there's not an album or anything, but is there any way I can get ahold of some of it? The theme always brings a smile to my face and the music throughout the episodes can pull me out of a bad mood. Sorry if that is a random request, but thought I'd ask. Take care!
Sincerely,
Rob Gartland

hello,
In the newest episode, "the bubble", does anybody know the name of the song playing during the scenes with Tina and John Hamm? It starts when they first play tennis, and runs through the next few scenes (in the apartment). It also plays again when he rides off on his motorcycle. It has a violin playing the lead melody. It's a pretty common, identifiable song, but I just don't know the name of it. Driving me nuts.
Anybody?
Thanks!

Will 30 Rock be officially releasing the songs on an album? I think it's necessary plus releasing the music videos if possible. The list of songs that I would request to have on an album include:
the instrumental soundtrack by Jeff Richmond
Muffin Top
Werewolf Barmitzvah
Pam the Overly Confident Morbidly Obese Woman Theme Song
Song clip from Mystic Pizza the Musical
It's a Jordan Christmas!
Midnight Train to Georgia by cast
Tina Fey's drunk cover of Janis Ian's "At Seventeen"
Drinking songs by the cast from Sandwich Day
Any cover done on the show by Jane Krakowski
am I forgetting anything else awesome?
On the side I hope the show does more musical numbers like The Midnight Train to Georgia.
Kudos and thanks.

I have a pretty obscure question about 30 rock...I remember a song (pre-recorded) that I think played in the background of some episode in Season 1. I have the memory that it took place in a "flashback" or "fantasy" section (maybe about 5 seonds long?) that took place in a club. It sounded like an R&B song, it could have featured Tracy Morgan, and I think the lyrics included the word "lady," among other things. Does this sound familiar at all? If so, do you remember what episode it was, and what song it could have been? There is the small possibility that it was in Season 3 as well.
We are making a cruising mix, and I really want to put it on the mix.
