My all time favorite movie is The Truman Show. I think it's such an interesting idea for a movie. You root for him so much and have real emotions for him. Well at least I did. I recommend everyone to see it if you haven't already.

Has anyone seen For Your Consideration? I rented it today, along with the Illusionist, because the last one we rented was scratched. But so far, the Illusionist is really good. I really need to know what happens at the end! Ahh! So is John hot in FYC?

Movies I rented for the night: Metropolis, Funny Face and One Night With the King (which I saw at the theatres- but I wanted to see it again tongue.gif )

Netflix always recommended Metropolis to me, but I never watched it - let me know if it's any good.

I am going to watch "Little Miss Sunshine" tonight. Per Jam4Never, the Illusionist is next on my queu.

I love the Truman Show too, Toby. Jim was actually really good in it.

Also,
Has anyone seen Empire of the Sun? Directed by Spielberg and starring Christian Bale as a young boy and John Malkovich?
I watched it last night.

Excellent movie, one of the best WWII movies I have ever seen. Plus, Christian was adorable!

Fritz Lang's Metropolis is amazing! I've seen it three times. But I have to say my all time favorite film to come out of German Expressionism would have to be The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari--the lighting and set design throughout is stunning. Also, if you like early German cinema, look into anything directed by F.W. Murnau. He did some great things during that period.

Anyhow, getting back on track, you should definitely take Netflix's recommendation and put Metropolis on your list.

I love the Thin Man movies! Powell and Loy's chemistry is amazing - there's a scene at the end of the first movie (I think, correct me if I'm wrong!) when they are on a train and he tells her that he's not going to sleep in the top bunk. They give each other this look that's R-rated. Besides the chemistry, I love his joking, arrogance and constant drinking. Oh yeah, and the mysteries - those are good too!

Hi fellow Thin Man fans. Yes, Dick and Myrna are wonderful. I like the scene where he's all boozy and she's knitting a bootie and he slowly figures out what's going on...and Asta is a great supporting actor - that dog can act!

Re: Amazing Grace

I can second that. I saw a preview of it two weeks ago and have been chomping at the bit to talk it up! Ioan Gruffudd is brilliant, not to mention the myriad other amazing British actors in it. . .

Also, I'm emotionally stunted when it comes to movies and therefore never, ever, ever cry in them, but I actually ALMOST cried in this one. Now THAT is saying something. smile.gif

I love that there are Thin Man fans here! Once a year, my grandma and I have a "Thin Man" marathon! Dick and Myrna do indeed have fantastic chemistry! And you are absolutely right, elien, it would not be the same without Asta!

I saw "Ghost Rider" yesterday. I think the audience heard me suck in my breath when Nicholas Cage had his shirt off. WHO KNEW HE HAD 6 PACK ABS UNDER THAT SHIRT? I cannot recall seeing him without a shirt (other than those far away pics on the boat with Lisa Marie) before, the man is built!

Sam Elliott's voice sounds just as buttery as it always has. Peter Fonda looks more like his dad as he gets older.

Oh, the movie was very good by the way. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Fancy_New_Becca
current nerd, thats one of my fav movies from a kid. I love metroplois. There are 2 verisons now, have you seen it? You can get the orginal score version and there is another with music, by david bowie and queen and a bunch of other people. it's okay but distracts alittle from the movie itself.
I saw a preview for a scary movie with nothing but puppets that come to life...it actually made me freeze in spot. that stuff really bothers me.
I cant find my copy of memphis belle. I really do like that movie. Ever notice how nic cage breathes really heavy in all his movies. it's creepy

Finished watching Metropolis tonight. Brilliant movie! I can't believe it was made in 1927- so many modern techniques used throughout the movie. (I mean they showed a futuristic phone with a tv screen- and this was before tv's were invented!) It's actually a bit creepy at times- but silent movies always make me feel that way (if you've seen the 1920's silent version of Phantom of the Opera- you know what I'm talking about wink.gif )

Oh- and BTW- The Thin Man is my next movie on my Netflix list- I've always wanted to see it. It should be here Wednesday.

bubble you should read about heady lemarr. She was brillant. She and another person patented a idea for tech that was close to modern day cell phones. Rent if you can find it, DW Griffth movies. Those are awesome. And lillian gish...so brillant as well. Target has what ever happened to baby jane, but it's 20 bucks.

2 more good movies:

'Shallow Grave' (especially for those who like Scottishness) (sample line- from one friend to another: "but you're a doctor! you kill people everyday!")

'Shattered Glass' (another office setting....)

Another great Lillian Gish role (this was in her later years) was in the film The Night of the Hunter. A brilliant movie if you haven't seen it, and what I believe to be Robert Mitchum at his best.

scranton temp liz- yes, I believe I've seen a clip of that second version of Metropolis with the "rock star score" (I guess you'd call it?), but you're right, it is definitely distracting. Stick with the original!

And fellow Thin Man fans (yay!) I agree those movies are not the same without Asta. My family actually started watching the series because of the dog--we had a wired fox terrier at the time--although, I must say, Cringer was nothing like Asta. He was absolutely fearless! biggrin.gif

One more thing, I have a recommendation for everyone. If you haven't seen it, get Pan's Labyrinth as soon as you can. Amazing, amazing, amazing!! Won three oscar's the other night, too.

Just watched "For Your Consideration." It's classic Christopher Guest, so I'll only recommend it to hardcore Guest fans. I loved it not only because it's a good movie but it's got a few Office connections. As everyone probably already knows, John K had a bit role and he looked great! But, the guy who plays Todd Packard also had a role, along with Ricky Gervais a.ka. David Brent from the original U.K. Office. They were all fabulous!

Plot Summary:
Based on the acclaimed sci-fi short story by Lewis Padgett, "The Last Mimzy" tells the story of two children who discover a mysterious box that contains some strange devices they think are toys. As the children play with these "toys," they begin to display higher and higher intelligence levels. Their teacher tells their parents that they seem to have grown beyond genius. Their parents, too, realize something extraordinary is happening. Emma, the younger of the two, tells her confused mother that one of the toys, a beat-up stuffed toy rabbit, is named Mimzy and that "she teaches me things."

As Emma's mom becomes increasingly concerned, a blackout shuts down the city and the government traces the source of the power surge to Emma's family's house. Things quickly spin wildly out of their control. The children are focused on these strange objects, Mimzy, and the important mission on which they seem to have been sent. When the little girl says that Mimzy contains a most serious message from the future, a scientific scan shows that Mimzy is part extremely high level electronic, and part organic! Everyone realizes that they are involved in something incredible…but exactly what?

"The Last Mimzy" features an ensemble cast that includes Timothy Hutton ("Ordinary People," "General's Daughter"), Joely Richardson ("The Patriot," "Nip/Tuck"), Rainn Wilson ("The Office"), Michael Clarke Duncan ("The Green Mile"), and newcomers Rhiannon Leigh Wryn and Chris O'Neil as the children, Emma and Noah. It is produced by Michael Phillips ("The Sting," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind") and directed by Bob Shaye (executive producer of, among other films, "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy). Shaye is also founder, Co-Chairman, and Co-CEO of New Line Cinema.

"The Last Mimzy" is based on the 1943 short story "Mimsy Were the Borogoves" by Lewis Padgett (a pseudonym for Henry Kuttner and his wife, C. L. Moore); the adapted screenplay is by Bruce Joel Rubin ("Ghost," "Deep Impact") and Toby Emmerich ("Frequency"). The film's production team also includes composer Howard Shore ("The Lord of the Rings" trilogy), editor Alan Heim ("All That Jazz," "The Notebook"), and sound designer Dane Davis ("The Matrix").

Combined, the cast and production team feature six Academy Award winners. The film is scheduled for a March 23, 2007 release.

I had to change to Blockbuster - you get free in store rentals, and for me, it was a lot faster than Netflix (I promise I don't work for Blockbuster!).

I watched Little Miss Sunshine - it was pretty good, not great. I'm not really sure why Alan Arkin won an Oscar for it, but he's one of my favorite actors, so congratulations.

Just watched that last night. My initial reaction was that I enjoyed it. I'm still trying to put my finger on whether I thought the ending was sufficient or disappointing, though I think I'm leaning towards sufficient...I have just decided that I am pleased with the ending and wouldn't have wanted it to end any other way, though it did leave me wanting to know if she could forgive him (but that was the point I guess).

I didn't feel like it was trying to tell us to feel any more sorry for Michael than whatever came most naturally to the viewer. I absolutely do think it was pretty real. I felt that the movie showed but didn't judge - and I liked it for that because I don't feel that it is for us to judge. I like that they didn't show us how things played out between them because a million different scenarios could have played out.

Best in Show is wonderful, but it pales next to their original masterpiece "This Is Spinal Tap" - I was just watching the Simpsons this evening and they did a parody of the Spinal Tap concerts.

It may be the funniest movie I've ever seen...
