My husband are excited about the movies this summer too. I really want to see the Ocean's 13 movie. For some reason, I really enjoy those movies. Is the third Bourne movie coming out soon? That's another one I'd like to see.

Just have to add: "can't buy me love" and "girls just want to have fun" are two of the best 80's movies ever smile.gif.

Other good 80's films:
"Say Anything" (he escorts her to England - what a guy!)

"The Sure Thing" (love show tune singing Tim Robbins and wife throwing them out of the car)

Downloaded this doco movie the raise and fall of the nationalist movement. Yep, some pretty hard core boring stuff. Trying to talk friends into SM3 at the IMAX. I doubt they will go. I might have to go alone.

Spider-Man was great I saw it early this afternoon.

P.S. For IMAX you WILL have to buy tickets maybe more than a day in advance depending on what time you want to see it.
Fancy_New_Becca
Fechin thank you for telling me that now incase I do make over there. Trying to put together a list of stuff to rent tomorrow. There is just nothing out

I finished "You Can't Take It With You" tonight. Such a great movie. I really loved it. (My favorite Frank Capra movie will always be "It's a Wonderful Life" though wink.gif )
Fancy_New_Becca
I forgot Little Childern is out on dvd, going to rent it. I don't remember where I read it, but I heard that someone was thinking of remaking metropolis. That sounds like a horrible idea to me.

I wanna see Disturbia, anyone here see that? Was it good?

I love that movie! I love anything with Jean Arthur (I'm a straight girl, but I think she has the sexiest voice). And of course Jimmy Stewart, Lionel Barrymore, Ann Miller (love her!) and Frank Capra - great movie.

rented little childer and keeping mum last nite. I have stuff to watch today.

I watched The Office on Thursday (obviously) and then a few hours later went to Spiderman 3. Spiderman 3 has a different flow than the two previous films, resulting in more character layers and the plot is more complex. It short, it is awesome. So awesome it took me a couple of days to start really thinking about The Office again. Of course, this is coming from a superhero nut.

On another movie, I recently watched The Baxter. This movie is an intelligent romantic comedy with wonderfully awkward undertones. I highly recommend it. I have not read all the pages on this thread (simply too long), so if someone else has already mentioned this movie, I share your good taste.
Fancy_New_Becca
Watched little childern this afternoon, what a moving powerful movie. Kate winslet was great as she always is, but wow that jackie earl haley he really blew me out of the water. Couldnt he and arkin have shared the oscar. It just moved me to tears.

has anyone seen the prestige...one of the best plots i have ever seen.

My favourite films are...

It Happened One Night, Paris When It Sizzles, On The Waterfront, Holiday, To Catch A Thief, An Affair To Remember, Charade, Breakfast At Tiffany's, The Philadelphia Story, To Have & Have Not, Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing, Rear Window, Easter Parade, The Tender Trap, Roman Holiday, Sabrina, His Girl Friday, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, A Touch Of Mink, Casablanca, The Swan, The Thin Man, The Big Sleep, 300, Bell, Book & Candle, Little Women, Cover Girl, Guys & Dolls, High Society, My Fair Lady
Fancy_New_Becca
great list of classics PNP.

keeping mum was a let down. Not that funny even for a dark brit comedy. So little childern, rent it and keeping mum, skip it.

Would have rented something else but they are repaving the parking lot in front of blockbusters so you have to walk across the parking lot to get to it and I didn't feel like going in after the hassle and maze to just get in the parking lot.

laugh.gif Sure. I never had an online bff before heehee.

Ultimately, my favourite film has to be "My Fair Lady". Audrey Hepburn & her hilarious cockney accent totally made the film for me. That's why I was so bummed when she turned proper. I think it took away the comedy of the film. Some of my favourite scenes was when she had the marbles in her mouth, when she had to keep saying "ha, ha" repeatedly & when she had to say her vowels & when she had to say "A cup of tea". Those scenes right there were absolute comic gold. Plus, who could forget that song "Just You Wait Henry Higgins". I die laughing everytime I hear it on my iPod.

"I'm a good girl, I am!" laugh.gif

Heck, I adored Audrey in every film she did. I wish she was still alive as I was only 7 when she passed away sad.gif. She's lovely & she's a legend.

Ok - favorite movies of all time for me: Lost in Translation and Mr. Holland's Opus. Both of those movies made me cry, and really touched me. I like movies with a really deep connection, or story, and I don't think all movies can connect like my two faves can.

I loved Lost in Translation, too. It's been a long time since I saw it, don't remember it all, but found whole new respect for Bill Murray, and Scarlett Johansson (sp?) was great. I really like seeing a well-known actor, often type-cast, in a completely different role and do it well. I thought the same thing about The Truman Show. Jim Carey was so different, and yet so convincing, in that. I think that was the first thing I saw him in where he wasn't just completely off-the-wall.
TalkAboutStank
I saw Rushmore this weekend. Very good - Bill Murray was great, as was Jason Schwartzman (sp?). Though his nose looked really weird. tongue.gif

I've not seen Lost in Translation, but I DID see Mr. Holland's Opus. The most touching and beautiful movie ever IMO, is 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind'. It can be a bit confusing, but the movie itself is just spectacular. I love Jim Carrey because of this movie.

I LOVE Mr Holland's Opus. I get upset just thinking about when its revealed that his son is deaf..I can imagine the heartbreak he felt..as a person loving music SO much..to have a son that (he thought) couldn't ever have the same affinity for it.. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is one of my FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVORITES, too!

Jim Carrey has always been one my favorite comedian/actors growing up and seeing him play a not-too funny role in The Truman Show let me know that he would be great in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I absolutely loved the concept of the movie..the notion that one could have their painful memory erased is something that i'm sure EVERYONE wished was a possibility...but as it's been said..."If you know nothing about the past, you're bound to repeat it."

The Thin Man series was awesome. They're selling a box set of all the films for $54.00 at a local video store but I need to buy some more clothes before I purchase that for my DVD collection. The two leading characters had fantastic chemistry & it didn't hurt that they were both funny as ****.

Nick Charles: How'd you like Grant's tomb?
Nora Charles: It's lovely. I'm having a copy made for you.

Lieutenant John Guild: You got a pistol permit?
Nick Charles: No.
Lieutenant John Guild: Ever heard of the Sullivan Act?
Nora Charles: Oh, that's all right, we're married.

Reporter: Say listen, is he working on a case?
Nora Charles: Yes, he is.
Reporter: What case?
Nora Charles: A case of scotch. Pitch in and help him.

Nick Charles: I'm a hero. I was shot twice in the Tribune.
Nora Charles: I read where you were shot 5 times in the tabloids.
Nick Charles: It's not true. He didn't come anywhere near my tabloids.

Nora Charles: All right! Go ahead! Go on! See if I care! But I thinks it's a dirty trick to bring me all the way to New York just to make a widow of me.
Nick Charles: You wouldn't be a widow long.
Nora Charles: You bet I wouldn't!
Nick Charles: Not with all your money...

Nick Charles: Say, how did you people happen to pop in here?
Lieutenant John Guild: We hear this is getting to be sort of a meeting place for the Wynant family, so we figured we'll stick around just in case the old boy himself should show up. Then we see this bird sneak in, we decide to come up. And lucky for you we did!
Nick Charles: Yes, I might not have been shot.

Nora Charles: You asleep?
Nick Charles: Yes!
Nora Charles: Good... I want to talk to you.

Nick Charles: Hey, would you mind putting that gun away? My wife doesn't care, but I'm a very timid fellow.

Nick Charles: Now how did you ever remember me?
Dorothy: Oh, you used to fascinate me. A real live detective. You used to tell me the most wonderful stories. Were they true?
Nick Charles: Probably not.

Nora Charles: How many drinks have you had?
Nick Charles: This will make six Martinis.
Nora Charles: [to the waiter] All right. Will you bring me five more Martinis, Leo? Line them right up here.

Reporter: Well, can't you tell us anything about the case?
Nick Charles: Yes, it's putting me way behind in my drinking.

Nora Charles: [suffering from a hang-over] What hit me?
Nick Charles: The last martini.

Absolute comic gold laugh.gif!

Yeah- I own all of the Thin Man movies. I bought them on amazon.com about 2 months ago for about 45 bucks (that was without shipping) The box set also included 2 really awesome documentaries on Myrna Loy and William Powell.

I love Bringing Up Baby- but I've yet to see Adam's Rib. I really need to get that one from netflix next. I love Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story smile.gif
prettyinpink86
The Philadelphia Story is my second film, right after Fair Lady. I watched High Society, which is the musical version of TPS & I can't say it's just not as good as TPS. I mean, one of the scenes that made TPS was when Macaulay was drunk & he just started rambling. Tracy was pretty funny drunk too. I dunno, the cast of Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant & James Stewart easily beats the cast of Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby & Frank Sinatra.

Macaulay Connor: This is the Bridal Suite. Would you send up a couple of caviar sandwiches and a bottle of beer?
Margaret Lord: What? Who is this?
Macaulay Connor: This is the Voice of Doom calling. Your days are numbered, to the seventh son of the seventh son.
Margaret Lord: Hello? Hello?
Tracy Lord: What's the matter?
Margaret Lord: One of the servants has been at the sherry again.

JIM FAN-yes thats the movie! It's really good too. If you like scary and blood then it's a way thumbs up.
The last kiss was really good actually, I enjoyed it so much.

Spiderman 3-AWFUL!!! I liked the action, but there wasnt enough story with the sand man and topher graces character. It would have been better to have those story lines built up. And never ever make tobey dance again that was painful to watch and felt like execs put it in cause they wanted a laugh, but I didn't. Sadly I have not seen that film but now I know what to rent next time I visit Blockbusters. How can you go wrong with Powell & Loy laugh.gif. Thanks for the suggestion!

I watched "Bringing Up Baby" & I must say that I love love love love the film! It had the perfect blend of comedy & romance. Katharine Hepburn & Cary Grant were fantastic together. I also enjoyed that Susan was a bit of an agressive character. Most women in films are never that straight forward with the men they like. She was absolutely hilarious & I loved that she didn't wait till the end to admit that she wanted to marry David & that she loved him. So adorable.

[repeated line]
David Huxley: I'll be with you in a minute, Mr. Peabody!

[Susan is stealing David's car from the golf course]
Susan Vance: Now, don't lose your temper.
David Huxley: My dear young lady, I'm not losing my temper. I'm merely trying to play some golf!
Susan Vance: You choose the funniest places; this is a parking lot.

David Huxley: Susan, is there any way to cross this stream?
Susan Vance: Oh, surely it's shallow. We can wade across.
[they both walk into the stream, then fall in after the floor drops off]
David Huxley: Oh, Susan...
Susan Vance: The riverbeds change!

Susan Vance: Oh, I'm caught on something - David, help me, will you?
David Huxley: Oh, no. That's poison ivy.
Susan Vance: I bet you wouldn't treat Miss Swallow this way.
David Huxley: I bet Miss Swallow knows poison ivy when she sees it.
Susan Vance: Yes, I bet poison ivy runs when it sees her.

David Huxley: [Pointing to a mark on a golf ball] You see, it's a circle.
Susan Vance: Well, of course, do you think it would roll if it were square?

Dr. Fritz Lehman: Well, you see, the love impulse in men frequently reveals itself in terms of conflict.
Susan Vance: [Excitedly] The love impulse!
Dr. Fritz Lehman: Without my knowing more about it, my rough guess would be, he has a fixation on you, a fixation that ...
Susan Vance: No wait, I can't remember any more than that!

Mr. Gogarty: [Gogarty, David, and Susan are in jail] Miss Susan! How'd you get here?
David Huxley: Influence.
Susan Vance: Don't worry, Gogarty, I'll get you out.
David Huxley: Oh, sure. Look, she got me out.

One scene that was hilarious was when Susan tore the back of her dress & she had absolutely no idea. I've never seen anyone fall in love so quickly though...
bubblewrap_1
^^ laugh.gif I love that movie. I love the entire parking lot scene at the beginning of the movie while he is trying to play golf. And I love the part where Huxley is wearing the women's robe:

Mrs. Random: Well, you look perfectly idiotic in those clothes.
David Huxley: These aren't my clothes.
Mrs. Random: Well, where are your clothes?
David Huxley: I've lost my clothes!
Mrs. Random: But why are you wearing *these* clothes?
David Huxley: Because I just went gay all of a sudden!
laugh.gif laugh.gif
prettyinpink86
^ Having him jump & fail his arms totally made the scene laugh.gif. Another classic moment was when he walked into the room & discovered that there actually was a leopard. Priceless. The golfing scene at the beginning was awesome too. Too many good scenes & lines.

It's sad that films these days aren't even close to the type of films back then. When you compare the plots, actors, actresses etc it isn't even the same. That is why I am a TCM addict. What they air are quality films. It's rare that I find a modern film that I enjoy so well.

It's sad that films these days aren't even close to the type of films back then. When you compare the plots, actors, actresses etc it isn't even the same. That is why I am a TCM addict. What they air are quality films. It's rare that I find a modern film that I enjoy so well.

I know. Most of my movie collection (ok almost all tongue.gif ) is pre-1960's. They just can't make movies like that anymore. I keep hoping- but I'm afraid it will probably never happen.
