So, anyone have the privilege of seeing Across the Universe? I literally see trailers everytime I turn on the TV. It's driving me insane I want to see it sooo bad!

I owe blockbuster like a bajillion dollars.

What sucks is that I can't find 3 of the movies I got from them sad.gif.

We started watching a documentary called A Decade Under the Influence about filmmaking in the 70s. It's in three parts and we've watched the first part. So far, very interesting.

The other day, I remembered a movie that I liked: The Faculty. I think I am now going to have to pick it up on DVD. biggrin.gif

Last night I finished “All About Eve” & my lord, the late Miss Bette Davis was simply divine. I take back what I said about her performance in “Human Bondage.” Her role as Margo was her best role & performance to date. She stole the entire show. I never released that she was so witty. That scene where she bit off that huge chunk of celery while maintaining eye contact with Addison (??) was simply a hoot rolling.gif. That, and when she replied with “milkshake” after Bill asked Eve what she wanted to drink. However, her best moment was when she delivered that memorable line, “Hang on to your seatbelts, it’s going to be a bumpy evening!” Ann Baxter was magnificent at that conniving Eve, using people to climb the social & famous ladder all the way to the top. She was just marvelous at the way she betrayed Margo, even though I loathed her at the same time. It was a film filled with a marvelous cast, a superb plot & a fantastic assortment of lines & scenes. Never have I been so engrossed in a film, so deeply intervened in what was going in the film during the whole duration. An absolute classic that will never be forgotten & always remain popular throughout the many, many generations of people. Such good suspension, such good tension, such good everything! I have so much respect for Bette Davis now, both as a person & an actress. I would have been honoured to been around when she was a big star, but I know her legacy will live on through the films she was in. I simply can’t wait to watch the film all over again! It's a must see for everyone, classic film fan or not.

That's one of my favorites - a really great movie about self-perception and how it impacts relationships. Margo's monologue in the car is one of my all-time favorites for its depth and delivery.

I want to see it super bad too! I'm a major Beatles fan. It looks like a really unique movie. It'll either be really okay or really good. I heard somewhere that all the singing in the movie was done live. That's pretty much unheard of. It's a really well-done teen movie, but not much more. It's enjoyable, the writing and acting are good, the characters are reasonably well drawn, but there's not that much more too it. (I'm pretty harsh on movies though....)

Oh definitely. This is one of the few films that has a message, a lesson behind it. I also loved the monologue too & since it's featured on imdb, I'll post it:

"Funny business, a woman's career, the things you drop on the way up the ladder so you can move faster. You forget you'll need them again when you get back to being a woman. It's one career all females have in common - being a woman. Sooner or later we've got to work at it no matter how many other careers we've had or wanted. And in the last analysis nothing is any good unless you can look up just before dinner or turn around in bed and there he is. Without that you're not a woman. You're something with a French provincial office or a book full of clippings but you're not a woman. Slow curtain, the end."

The line that stood out was the one that being a woman is a career that all females have in common. I favoured it because of it's real honesty, & because we'll always be a woman despite what we do. That's a line that will always stay with me.

Ooh, & I should mention that I messed up on the memorable line blush.gif. Instead it's "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night!"

When I watched All About Eve yesterday, I watched it just for the sake of well, watching it. The next time I will watch more for the meaning & depth, as I'm sure there's a lot.

Oh, you would absolutely love it. I recommend placing it in your top 5, as All About Eve is the kind of film that's best to be watched as soon as possible. Plus, AFI hailed it as one of the best 100 films ever so it was bound to be good. Hopefully you'll get a chance to watch it soon smile.gif.

I have a tidbit for all the It Happened One Night fans here. Do you know that both Myrna Loy & Bette Davis were considered for the role of Ellie? I believe Myrna was the first choice & if she accepted the role, she would've never been able to play Nora Charles in the famous Thin Man series? I couldn't remember the case with Bette though. I think Claudette Corbert was a great choice. As much as I would've loved Myrna for the role, I can't imagine anyone else as Nora Charles & as for Bette, well I love her but I can't imagine her as Ellie. Than again, I always thought that Myrna & Claudette kinda looked alike. Very interesting...

My friends and I went to see Sydney White yesterday afternoon (we were literally the only ones in the theatre; it was pretty cool). It was funny (most of our time was spent discussing the parallels to the fairy tale). I'd recommend it at least once.
PaxLux
So who here actually goes to the movie theaters? Or do you prefer to rent?

My hubby and I have a complicated system. We have 2 Netflix queues. 1 is our main one and also is the one that hubby puts any movie that he wants to see that I don't. That one has almost 300 discs in it (that includes TV shows). We have a 2nd queue just for me to put movies that I want to see that he doesn't. Mine is much shorter. biggrin.gif As for going to the theater, we wait until it's something that we really want to see or that we want to see with friends. Going to the theater for us is pretty rare especially if it's something that we know we'll like and we'll just buy it later when it comes out on DVD (we tend to "collect").

Are there any upcoming movies that people want to see?
Lenny9987
When I go to the movies it's with family or friends and it's usually on whatever day is the theatre's bargain day. There are some great cheap theatres near home so we went a lot over the summer. Right now there's not much we want to shell out the dough for. We're waiting until Across the Universe comes to the theatre near the school (if it does dry.gif ). I'm looking forward to Atonement in December (I only hope I have enough time to read the book before I go to see it). Mostly we just wait and rent. Over the summer we caught up on a lot of movies by checking out the library (they've added a lot since we were little and it's still free to rent).

sorry, i didn't really take the time to read through to see how thoroughly it's been discussed but Across The Universe... i have to say i really, really liked it. i'm kind of hasty to say loved, hence the really really. the visuals were amazing. i'm pretty pleased with song covers for the most part. i also loved how it was a musical but not really since there wasn't a whole lot of dialogue and the songs weren't completely out of nowhere.
overall i'd have to say it was about a 7.5 or 8 out of 10.

Last night for the first time I watched Notorious with Cary Grant & Ingrid Bergman. Who knew that an Alfred Hitchcock film was capable of making me cry? I've seen roughly 32 Cary Grant films & I can say that out of all the leading ladies, he had the best chemistry with Ingrid Bergman. Their passion escaped through their kisses & their actions, & not in the words they spoke. That kiss outside the wine cellar was something else. wub.gif The final minutes of the film confirmed it just by the way he was holding her. Some of my favourite lines were:

Alicia: Say it again, it keeps me awake.
Devlin: I love you.

Alicia: Don't ever leave me.
Devlin: You'll never get rid of me again.
Alicia: Never tried to.

Devlin: Don't you need a coat?
Alicia: You'll do.

Alicia: What does the speedometer say?
Devlin: 65.
Alicia: I want to make it 80 and wipe that grin off your face.

Devlin: [bitterly, to Alicia] Dry your eyes, baby; it's out of character.

I seriously thought she was going to meet her at demise at the end & I would've been heartbroken if that was case. Notorious is probably my favourite Hitchcock film, purely because the elements of suspense, drama & romance were blended together like a fine martini.

I rented three films from the library which are,

1. Now, Voyager
2. Penny Serenade
3. Love Me Tonight

You were absolutely right! I *loved* the film & I didn't even notice that it was well over 3 hours. Myrna Loy looked & sounded so different from all the other films I watched her in. Still, that scene where Billie & Flo were seated outside, watching the ferries was absolutely adorable, especially when Flo made her turn away to confess that he loved her. Sooooo romantic wub.gif. I just wish they introduced her earlier in the film, perhaps when there was an hour & a bit left. The little girl was so adorable in the beginning but I was shocked to see that she grown so fast & even more shocked to see that she still held a torch for him. What a ladies man he was. And ooh, and felt so sorry for Anna but the film wouldn't be the same without William's & Myra's character being together. What a divine film. However, my only complaint was the excess & extravagent(sp) musical numbers but nonetheless, it was worth my time.

Tonight's film will be Sex & The Single Girl, with Tony Curtis wub.gif, Natalie Wood & Lauren Bacall. I also plan to watch Notorious at least two more times before I return it to the library. I just wish there were subtitles, as there were certain words I couldn't catch with the volume blasted sad.gif.

I rewatched one of my favorites today - The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

My top horror film of all time rotates between TCM, Day of the Dead, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Today it's TCM.

I just love how unique it is. The actor who plays the hitchhiker is actually schizophrenic. How could you cast that in today's hollywood? That paired with the excellent script, a shooting style that had an unnerving sense of reality, (yet remained artful, check out the shot of Pam walking to the Sawyer house) an talented art director who hand made most of the stuff in the house out of real animal and human bones. (they had mail-ordered human skeletons from India) But perhaps it's biggest attribute is the decision not to have fx shots of Leatherface's chainsaw ripping through his victims, or show the meat-hook piercing someone's back. It was pointed out that the meat-hook scene, which is the moment most likely to send people walking out of the theater, (or lose their lunch) contains not one drop of blood.

That's why I hated the remake. It was a Friday the 13th film. A corny, predictable gore fest. Yawn. sigh.gif rolleyes.gif

I was recommended--from the Daniel Knauf, brilliant creator or Carnivale biggrin.gif, via a Carnivale Yahoo group--a few movies that inspired him (re:Carnivale), one of which I found and watched tonight called Nightmare Alley. It's really quite good, and you can really see were he got his inspiration from!

(Also,--just a fun fact rolleyes.gif--Freaks was an inspiration for him as well and as an odd to it, Sofie say's to Ben in Milfay--episode 1 season 1--"One of us?" as the freaks said in the movie.)

I couldn't find Love Crazy at my video store sad.gif, but I am going to try to find it at this specialized movie buff video store tomorrow, fingers crossed smile.gif!
