^ Just have to stop in and echo you all: Sunset Boulevard is one of my favorite movies of all time, and IMO one of the most well made movies ever. I own it and have watched it again and again and again, and it is one of only a handful of movies I have never gotten tired of.
(I love ALW's musical, as well. I thought it was an amazing adaptation!)
The Philadelphia Story is another one that I can never flip past on TV, but my husband has never been able to make it through the whole movie.

I'm not sure why.
RC, a couple people here have told you that Close Encounters is awful, but I've actually always liked it. I can't tell you how many times I saw it as a kid. I think it would be on my mom's desert island list. It's not a
great movie, but...hmm, I don't know how to describe it. It is what it is: Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss and that strange blend of abstractness that came with a lot of movies from the late 70's. It's kind of a "time capsule movie", if that makes any sense. And I would say that if nothing else, you should watch it because after you do, you'll be amazed at how many references are made to it in other movies and tv. Give it a try.

Harold and Kumar!!! I really like Kal penn, he's made some bad choices lately but I hope this as good as the first.
You know what movie I really really like and most people might find it offensive is, Bad Santa. Under all the sex, cussing and drinking it's a sweet movie. Billy bob has never been funnier since

I like "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" with Bette Davis. It's very dark and fascinating. Give it a look see.
I absolutely adore Bette Davis. She's the epitome of cool. I respect her for the fact that she's real, that she's not afraid to speak her mind. I loved reading her biographies, as they offered such an interesting glimpse into her life. What a fasinating(sp) woman Bette was. Also, who could forget the legendry feud of Bette Davis & Joan Crawford, who were both co-stars in WHTBJ. I think Bette won that feud

.
Two of Bette's greatest films have to be All About Eve & The Man Who Came To Dinner. Both are completly different films with Bette portraying two different women. She was an absolute riot in The Man Who Came To Dinner

. I never realized how comedic she could be. It's a must watch with great humour from the entire cast.
STL, I saw Mogambo not too long ago on TCM. I paid more attention to the love story going on rather than the plot

.
MD, I *love* The Philadelphia Story. I always watch in when I get the chance too. Jimmy Stewart was almost as swoon worthy as Cary Grant

. I think it was Katharine's funniest performance, or one of many. I'm so happy that Cary was cast instead of Katharine's original choices, Clark Gable & Spencer Tracy.
CHBO, no problem

. Thanks for the compliment heehee. I hope you'll get the chance to watch all the films on my list, as they're all fantastic in their own ways.
BW, have you watched Auntie Mame yet? I definitely think you should when you get the chance. I've never seen To Be or Not to Be but I'll add it to my list of must sees. Thanks for the recommendation! Ooh, and did you know the line from my icon/avatar was ad-libbed by Cary Grant? That makes the line even more funnier

I was watching the trailer for the new Morgan Freeman Jack Nicholson movie the Bucket List and it got me thinking about my own "Bucket List", what would you guys put on your list?
5 Things I would like to do before I kick the bucket
5. Buy a brownstone in Brooklyn
4. Tell my grand kids stories about how their dad's drove me nuts (my
kids are now 4 and 5)
3. Skinny dip with my husband in the Caribbean
2. Take that trip to Cuba that my husband and I are always dreaming about
1. Make enough money in the next 5 years so that I can enjoy my retirement

Cary Grant supposedly ad-libbed a lot of his lines. I was watching the special features on His Girl Friday & it was mentioned how Rosalind Russell hired a line writer(??) I believe to keep up with & match Cary Grant & I think one of the scenes was where Walter was talking about the window with the candle burning & Hildy replied something like, "I jumped out of that window long ago."

.
That line has so many great quotes

Walk Hard was really good and I'm not just saying that because you get to see Jenna in lingerie again. I'm serious. What? You don't believe me...cmon...
The movie moved back and forth between hilarious satire and absolute ridiculous behavior. It was much better than I expected and had me in stitches during some parts. There was a part where Dewey Cox is singing a song that was a carbon copy of a Roy Orbison song but they don't inform the audience. Nobody in the theater got the joke but me. So I was laughing hysterically and my friends were looking at me like "It's funny but not that funny". So I made them listen to a Roy Orbison song afterwards and they understood. Very good movie.
Lots of Office cameos btw...

I watched The Grapes of Wrath last night. I thought it was good, but definitely not as good as the book. I didn't like the casting, the main actors were also too primp and proper, which bothered me. I liked the extras and the scenes of the people and such, it captured the era well. I so love that book, I tear up every time I think of that era, I'm just so attached to it, probably because of Carnivale--I thought Carnivale captured the essence of the era excellently as well as having better more fitting cast (and much more) then The Grapes movie did, but it was made in 1940 so that's to be expected.
And today I went to see Atonement and it is just AMAZING! Truly wonderful, a MUST see! Everything is perfect! I'm gonna read the book as soon as I can!

I got quite a few movies for Christmas so it's going to take me awhile to get through all of them. I did watch The Jungle Book tonight though- it just came out on DVD in October. It was my favorite Disney movie when I was little- the VHS tape I own is so worn out because I watched it so often

I'm trying to get all of the animated Disney movies as they come out on DVD. I want to get Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast- those are my other favorite 2. I'll have to wait for them to re-release Beauty and the Beast though. It's out of print right now and the lowest price on amazon for it is $44

I just saw it. WOW, it was really good but WOW! Talk about poor timing....
It was fantastic in so many ways. I have a minor in Theatre (a few hours short of a degree actually) and I have never seen it done on stage, I was only familiar with a short premise of the film so I was completely shocked when I did see it. Not for obvious reasons, just for the tragedy of it all.

It was a great movie until the tacked on message at the end. They didn't even build up to it.
It was like the entire movie they were moving smoothly and then at the end of the movie the director/writers said "OH CRAP!!! We forgot to throw in a political point. Might as well just throw it in."
I wouldn't have minded it so much if they had moved towards it all movie but it was so tacked on.

When are you due?
Superbad's on my list. I thought Knocked Up was great, but I've read some reviews from women who find it more than mildly sexist...I'm not about to change my opinion though. It wasn't really made for them.

Speaking of Superbad, I was just posting I Come Apart on the Music thread, and saw the link for the trailer for the movie that the song is from. Marvin Gaye supplied the score for Trouble Man. I own the soundtrack, and it gets played every once in a while, but I've never actually seen the movie. After seeing
this trailer, I've decided that I need to hunt it down. Warning: Contains one A**, one GD and one Honky

...and some violence that's 1,000 times less graphic than anything you see on the dozens of cop dramas on network TV.

.
I finished Meet Me In St.Louis last night & I forgot how much I love the film

. I appreciated it & loved it more the second time around. Judy Garland was simply divine & her singing voice is one of an angel. Her rendition, which is the original one, of Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, blew me away. That & The Trolley Songs are my favourite ones. It's such an extravagent musical filled with spectacular musical scores & lines. Definitely a film that will remain one of my all time favourites while being added to my DVD collection

I saw I Am Legend today. I did not like it. I couldn't connect to the character and there was no solid plot, IMHO. It just hobbled along in a very predictable way from start to finish. Not even the special effects could save it. It's too bad, I thought it had a lot of potential. Luckily, I had free movie passes so it didn't cost me anything except a couple hours (of which I will never get back).

That is all forgotten when you realize what a life this man had. Christian Bale was outstanding, as always. Steve Zahn was surprisingly good, I didn't expect that out of him. Everyone needs to see this movie.
