I'm thinking like you FGC, juno looks okay but it's going to be on my rental list. I was really disappointed with superbad, not as funny as it was made out to be. When they said a vulgar comedy I was like okay, I do like those, and I guess I'm just dirtier than most:lol: cause I thought it could have been more vulgar.

OH I read that in a magazine about a Grease remake and JS. I think she is so talentless and to even mention her name with a timeless classic like grease is like taking the lords name in vain...it's just not done IMO

I would like to see Juno very very very badly.

I saw it yesterday and absolutely loved it. It was full of quirky characters and sharp dialogue. I connected to both the characters and the storyline on so many different levels. It's one of those movies that you think about a long time after you've seen it. What I found so fascinating is that it's a story that's been told before, but an entirely fresh and new perspective has been added. It's worth seeing if you like witty characters, heartwarming connections, and a string of laugh out loud moments.

Btw, Rainn Wilson's role was small, but hilarious. He rocked.

Thanks for the recommendation! I didn't know Rainn was in it! But, I think I can wait to rent it. There are some movies that you just have to see on the big screen (like Atonement!) because of the cinematography and such, but there are others that are good/cute and just fun to rent. Plus I'm still in a daze after watching Atonement, it was SO good biggrin.gif wub.gif! (I feel like all I'm saying is Atonement, Atonement, Atonement laugh.gif sorry!)

Ya, I though Superbad was going to be really funny, but my sister (who saw most of it in class, while I missed it cause I was writting a test) didn't like it that much. IMO, I though there was too much swearing. I wasn't expecting that I guess.

More Cloverfield information:

A new article in Variety reveals a few new Cloverfield tidbits. Here are the interesting pieces:
  • The film started out as an “elaborate 60-page treatment” by Lost writer Drew Goddard.
  • Cloverfield features no musical score at all, “just source music and well-orchestrated ambient sound.”
  • The beginning of the film was shown with a lightweight Panasonic HD HandyCam, “then moves into transitional sequences shot with a 3-lb. Canon for about a third of the film.” The special effects shots were filmed with “the much-heavier” hi-res Sony F23 or Thomson Viper.
  • One five-minute continuous master shot “incorporates 20 VFX elements.”
  • Director Matt Reeves promises “intimate contact” with the monster by the end of the 90-minute film.
  • A digital version of Cloverfield will play on in a few hundred screens.
You can read the full article on Variety.com. Cloverfield hits theaters on 1-18-08.

The movie a scam! rolling.gif 'Handycam' is a trademark of Sony, not Panasonic. I really wanted to see this, but now that thier making up fake cameras to trick people....I'm not sure I want to see it anymore. laugh.gif

That's sort of what I thought. Isn't there another trailer playing right now that has nothing but first-person hand-held footage? I thought I saw two of those before I am Legend.

Also, I like Blair Witch, but I'm not really sold on this type of film making. It's a little gimmicky... But ambitious. I hope it lives up to its potential, but I'll remain weary for now.

I hope the monster is Gamera.

I watched both. I liked Double Indemnity- but I loved To Have and Have Not. That movie was amazing. It reminded me of Casablanca a lot- which is one of my favorite movies. In my opinion I actually liked To Have and Have Not better than Casablanca (dare I even say that tongue.gif ) I've really gotten into film noir lately- Maltese Falcon and The Third Man are on my netflix list next.

I've been trying to watch a lot of movies this week because once my classes start up again my movie watching will probably decrease quite a bit.....

It's nothing but first person, it's really only like Blair Witch in that it has handheld cameras but its definitely a lot better in that the cameras are way better and all of the footage I have seen isn't as shaky or hard to watch. I've been following the movie seen the trailer before Transformers this summer and there has been an online viral marketing campagin. If you go on the website for the movie you can watch the first five minutes of it. I'm a tad biased about the movie since I've been waiting so long but JJ Abrams is the producer so you know it's going to be decent at least. I don't have the article but no one knows excatly what the monster but JJ said he wanted to create his own Godzilla type monster for the US.

laugh.gif I felt the same way about To Have & Have Not. It's one of the greatest films ever. And yeah, I liked Casablanca but not as much. I think the problem with me is that I was too caught up in the hype with Casablanca. I was expecting to be blown away but overall, I found it pretty decent. Plus, I'm a big romantic at heart so the ending didn't go to well with me laugh.gif. I almost yelled at my tv saying, "Don't leave each other!" laugh.gif But yeah, To Have & Have Not was truly the better film, & nobody can beat the chemistry of Bogie & Bacall. I think that line about how to whistle would be considered almost racy in today's standards. The humour was great & one memorable line was when Slim said something along the lines of, "Are you guessing her weight?" But the funniest character was Eddie(??) especially when he kept asking if someone was ever stung by a dead bee laugh.gif.

Have you seen The Big Sleep yet? Best Philip Marlowe & Bogie & Bacall film ever IMO. Possibly the best film noir ever too. Great plot & supporting cast. Quite some suspense & plot twists. You'll love it biggrin.gif.
JAM4NEVER
I think it will be refreshing to see a movie shot with a 'HandyCam' in the midst of all these special effects and heavy duty cameras. It's a different take on a monster movie and it looks interesting.

Have to say again just how great Juno was. Also, Enchanted was so cute. I'm trying to get by brother to go see Walk Hard with me (and I think I'm wearing him down). Unfortunately, I still haven't found anyone who'll go to Atonement with me. I loved the book and the only thing keeping me from going is that I want someone to go with me.

Also, I found this online (actually I found 1,001 Books to Read Before You Die at Barnes & Noble today and then looked up the list for movies). It was a lot of fun looking it over. I've only seen about 60 of them (I've actually read as many books on the other list as I've seen movies on this one). Here's the link.

I was reading the entertainment section in my local paper & to my delight, they announced the official release date for the latest Bond film. That day will be November 7th of this year, and the tentative title is Bond 22nd. If my memory serves me correct, Bond 22 will be a continuation of the latest released Bond film, Casino Royale. I’m happy to know that the missing links will be filled, such as the significance of Vesper’s boyfriend, Ellipsis & what happened between Bond & Mr. White (remember that Bond shot him in the leg at the end before delivering that famous line in cinema history, “Bond James Bond.”) Daniel Craig & Judi Dench will return, but as to who will play the newest Bond girl remains a mystery. Since filming progresses soon, I imagine it will have to take place soon. Eva Green was pretty d*mn good as Vesper Lynd. I’ll admit that my eyes weren’t very dry close to the end of the film.

I’m such a huge Bond fan geek, er, fan biggrin.gif. Forget Jason Bourne or Jason McClane. Bond is the ultimate hero, bada$$, agent & man IMO. No wonder he always gets the girl(s) laugh.gif. If he was a real man, I'd be all over him laugh.gif. Also, Sean Connery portrayed the best 007 ever wub.gif. Another great thing about the Bond series are the theme songs. I *love* the latest one by Chris Cornell called “You Know My Name”. The opening sequence combined with the theme song blew my mind.

So yeah, the most significant aspect of 2008 will be the release of Bond 22. And well, my 22nd birthday laugh.gif.

Oh no! That's really disappointing! I guess that settles it... it'll have to go on our netflix. I'd still like to see it, but now I don't want to pay the theater price.

I actually came here to warn you all about one of the worst movies I've ever seen... "Next" with Nicholas Cage. We watched it last night from Netflix and it was horrible! Maybe it was because my husband and I think really logically and when things don't make sense from any point of view, we just can't let it go. The concept was kinda cool - seeing 2 minutes into the future, but the whole thing was just bad. The script, the acting, the special effects, and the actors themselves were bad. I couldn't buy Julianne Moore as a harda$$ FBI agent, Nicholas Cage was trying to act waaaay too serious the whole time and had a vexing look and furrowed brow through the whole movie. Jessica Biel took a big step backward with this movie too... she's had much better movies, but this was awful. The slow parts were way too slow and the parts that could've been interesting or intense were just hurried and I couldn't get into it. The music tried to help add to the drama/suspense, but the script/acting was just so bad that it didn't work. Anyway, I guess that's all I have to say about it, but I'm sure I could continue to go on and on about how much I disliked it tongue.gif. It really didn't have any redeeming qualities, in my opinion.

Did you end up going?

I actually went to see Juno, I thought it was cute, but didn't love it. It was well done for a low budget film, the acting was good and the music too, I just couldn't really relate to any of the characters. The modern teen lingo got on my nerves. I thought that her pregnancy was portrayed kinda lightly, like being pregnant is easier and I found that it had a political subtext (which I really do not want to debate over because I know how touchy the subject of abortion is, so I'll stop now). But hey, that's just me smile.gif, I had a satisfying and civil conversation about it with my mom and sister and I don't want to offend anyone and/or have a heated 'discussion' about it.

I saw Vanity Fair, and IMO it was very forgettable and ordinary. There was something queer about it, I heard that her character was harsher in the book and I found that it did come across in the movie and maybe not in the best way. I can't remember it much, it was ok, but forgettable.

My friend kind of made me watch a movie called Murder Party last night. It's probably the most aptly named film since Tokyo Decadence...or Return of the King. Plenty of murder. Lots of partying. I thought it was going to be one of those movies that you can get at Best Buy in a box set of ten movies for ten dollars, each shot on video instead of film, with awful effects and worse acting (and it sort of is), but this one was many times better and hilarious in some places. Yes, it actually is a comedy; a sick, disgusting, kind of gory comedy. I'm not recommending it though. I'm just talking about it.

I also watched Superbad for the second time. It's even funnier when you already know the revelation about the cops.

I'm watching Steel Magnolias right now. I'd forgotten how much I love this movie. Sally Field, Olympia Dukakis & Shirley MacClaine are just great. (TBS just took a ridiculous commercial break - right in the middle of M'lynn's graveside talk to the girls!! sad01.gif mad.gif sad01.gif )

That's one of my "stop what you're doing and watch" movies...but I came into it pretty late today.

Oh, yes I've seen Dear Frankie and it is a great, touching and cute movie biggrin.gif ! Definitely recommend it!

I saw Vanity Fair, and IMO it was very forgettable and ordinary. There was something queer about it, I heard that her character was harsher in the book and I found that it did come across in the movie and maybe not in the best way. I can't remember it much, it was ok, but forgettable.

I saw it about a year ago. It's a very cute movie smile.gif

Thanks! Good to know smile.gif.

I'm a new fan of Gerard Butler's (P.S. I Love You), so if he's in it, I'll bet it's good.

Steel Magnolias! wub.gif I'd probably need a bucket to cry in if I tried watching that movie now.

I agree with your Gerard Butler comment... that's why I added the movie in the first place, but it actually looks like it'll be really good smile.gif.

I hate it when really good actors/actresses take on certain movies that don't do them justice. Oh well... I'll just take it off our list and no harm done smile.gif. Thanks smile.gif.

yeah sharp I did. : lol: Last night the dvd of Mildred pierce gets stuck at min 36. I was ticked off. This is why I liked tapes more than dvds in a way. tapes didn't get stuck really like that. I don't know if I'll be able to finish it today. late tonight I might watch catch and release

Is Chuck a guy? That kinda creeps me out...

I haven't seen Steel Magnolias in a really long time. I should rent it again because I remember it was a really good movie

No laugh.gif Her real name is Charlotte. Chuck is just her nickname

Has anyone seen "Neptune's Daughter"? I love classic movies, but I've surprisingly never seen this one. I love the song in it, "Baby it's cold outside", so I'm really excited about watching it smile.gif. Any other classics you can recommend? I've seen most Cary Grant, Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby movies... haven't seen many Audrey Hepburn ones, though. I think the beginning of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" moved so slow that I got tired of it... I think I was just in the mood for a more upbeat one at the time smile.gif. Anyway, any recommendations for any old movies would be appreciated! smile.gif

I'm just sitting down to watch Ratatouille and then Finding Neverland. I need to watch Shrek 3 tomorrow, I think. That's one good thing about having 2 younger sisters-in-law... we can buy them cheesy/cute/girly movies as gifts and then I don't get crap from Jason about watching them smile.gif.

Neptune' s Daughter is a great movie. They released it in the Esther Williams collection this summer but I haven't seen it in awhile though because I only have it on VHS and not DVD sad.gif

You should try Breakfast at Tiffany's again- it's really good. If you want to see other Audrey Hepburn movies though I would recommend Roman Holiday (1953), Sabrina (1954), Funny Face (1957), Charade (1963) or How to Steal a Million (1966). As for other old movies I could probably recommend thousands to you tongue.gif but I wont laugh.gif Here are some fun comedies that are my favorites:

It Happened One Night (1934)
Bringing Up Baby (1938)
The Philadelphia Story (1940)
Libeled Lady (1936)
The Thin Man (1934)
After the Thin Man (1936)
Swing Time (1936)
Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948)
My Favorite Wife (1940)
The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947)
On the Town (1949)
Love Crazy (1941)
Double Wedding (1937)
Diapers
I just finished Zodiac. I can totally understand why it's on so many 10-best lists. It's an incredible movie with a great cast that just disappear into their roles.

Wow, thanks! The ones in bold I've seen and loved smile.gif. I need to write all of these down! I guess I'll have to slowly add them to our netflix or hope that they have it on the "watch instantly" feature. Thanks again! smile.gif
