Well i wont be able to see Cloverfield till Jan 22, after the kids get some bogus 4 day weekend starting this Friday wink.gif I'm going to bring a pad & pencil to write stuff down so i dont forget. I know a few people said it reminds them of Blair Witch Project. I never saw that movie, but I know of it and the gist of it.

I really really liked that movie, in fact I might end up buying it. (I only buy my very favorites.) LOL I know what you mean about De Niro Snogging!

I think Michelle Pfeiffer did a really good job too. I don't think they could have found a better person for the role.

Enjoy it OH and let us know what you think!

anyone seen Margot at the wedding with Nicole Kidman? I've not heard much of anything about this movie other than the odd review in the newspapers or online

Somebody tried to make a Peter Jackson movie on an Ed Wood budget, and got some beloved b-listers, like Ray Liotta, Burt Reynolds and the dude who's like the British Steven Segal to sign on. This looks absolutely horrendous. I can't wait to see it.

In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale
I called it. It got a 5% on the Tomatometer. I realize that blood, sweat and tears went into realizing somebody's hopes and dreams here. I feel bad about kicking anybody when they're down, but...man, this whole movie was a bad idea from the beginning.

Speaking of bad ideas. Ebert and Roeper had their lists of the worst ten movies of 2007 this morning. Our own JK made an appearance for License to Wed. I'm not saying anything about his abilities. Sometimes good people end up on bad projects...in some people's opinions.

Definitely read the book. It's a little bit gorier than the movie (which is part of why I was so nervous about seeing the movie; I knew it was rated R and I was afraid it was because of the war images which I can handle better reading than visually but with the scene of the school girls they had all the impact with so much less gore)

And I love it when movies have that one long uncut shot like that. I'm going to be getting the soundtrack to this movie at some point too. I loved how they incorporated the typewriter into Briony's theme and then the way they had the lights around her mirroring that beat, genius.

Oh, and I finally managed to find season one of Carnivale at the library. It had been checked out the last two times I'd been there but they had it when I went yesterday so I'm going to start that this afternoon.

Yes, the music was absolutely brilliant biggrin.gif! You can listen to it on the official Atonement web page, also FGC's sig.

Did you watch Pride & Prejudice? Cause the sam film maker/director did it, he is amazing! It's his first films (I think) and he has SO much talent! He did the same one shot type thing at the beginning of Pride & Prejudice.

Also, you should check out Nine Lives (2005), it's nine intertwining stories all in one shots and directed by Rodrigo García, who directed some episodes of Carnivale. It's a sad film, but amazing, the acting and cinematography and music, etc!

I'm so glad you found Carnivale, hope you like it biggrin.gif!

Saw P.S. I Love You again (took MIL this time) & loved it even more. I was afraid I would be a little bored since I'd already seen it, but I wasn't at all. I absolutely love-love-LOVE the bar scene after they first met when he's singing to her & I figured out what song it is, JAM4NEVER. It's called "Galway Girl" & I downloaded a good version on iTunes by Mundy & Sharon Shannon. Mundy must be an Irish band. I am seriously in love w/ that part of the movie. Gerard Butler is hot & Hilary Swank is cute too. wub.gif

Aww, I'm glad you were able to see it again! That is one great scene. Yes! You found it! I will look that up.... biggrin.gif

It's nice to see a movie well put together that doesn't bore me to tears, LOL.

This is pretty cool, to me. Netflix (online) is where I watch (and participate in) workout videos, so I guess that means I'll be able to workout for an unlimited amount of time! tongue.gif I've also been trying to watch as many "classics" with their online feature as I can so that I don't have to wait for them in the mail. I enjoy being able to pull up a movie whenever I want and I don't feel bad about shutting it off if I don't like it.

I did see that version of Pride & Prejudice but I was unimpressed (not with the cinematography though; that was great). I had a huge problem with what they did to the story itself. It was completely condensed and that just bugged me. I loved the A&E version with Colin Firth (but that version was five hours so not as many people could sit through it). What bugged me the most was the scene in which Lizzie hears about Lydia running away with Wickham. It was so over the top it became funny but it is actually a very serious point in the story.

And I'm watching Carnivale right now. I'm on the third episode. I'm really enjoying it so far.

Ya, I can see what you mean. It's difficult with movies cause you don't have a lot of time, not as much as a mini series, to tell a story, especially one based on a book. Things always have to be altered, and this can be for the better and sometimes not. I never read the book, so I'm probably bias rolleyes.gif, but I preferred it for several personal reasons--like the actors, cinematography, music, film quality, etc. Plus I wasn't really into the first one as much.

If you have any question or anything, just post 'em on the Fav TV Shows thread and I'll answer 'em biggrin.gif!

I know some people have posted here that they saw "The Departed."

It depends on the girl, but I'd lean towards no. There's some sex with a scene in a porno theatre, and TONS of violence. The language is terrible, also. If it's your daughter, watch it first and decide. If it's someone else's, I might have to say no just to be on the safe side or mention it to the parents and see their reaction.

I mean, Leo is hot and all in that movie, but still!

I saw it...we rented it over the weekend. My daughter was at a friends house, so it was my husband and me and one son, age 21. She came home during the movie, and I told her that she had to be in another room until it was over, which she was fine with. She heard a few f-bombs, but I had already seen enough of the movie to know that I wasn't comfortable with her watching the rest with us.
Well, my son thought we were totally off base and there was no problem with her watching it! Um, no. It sort of turned into a fight, with him rolling his eyes and saying how we were overprotective of her and he was allowed to watch similar movies when he was her age.
Well, not that I recall. I remember not letting my boys watch anything I hadn't previewed, and I didn't even let them watch shows like, "Are you afraid of the Dark?" which was on Nick when they were around age 7 or 8.
Anyway, I think I was right, and he thinks we're stupid. laugh.gif I guess that's nothing new.

laugh.gif ITA with your mom, the hair annoyed me! I never saw the original one though. I like a stronger lead woman, she was just too much of a push over, and that bothered me. My mom shares my love of horror movies, and she let me start watching 'em with her when I was 11. Some people may look down on that, but I could care less what other people think. One of my fondest memories was seeing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with her. Sex scenes were uncomfortable though.

My mom was like that too. I really appreciate that about her also. She let me read her Stephen King books and watch Alfred Hitchcock shows with her at a pretty early age. I remember watching Wolfen and The Howling with her when they first hit cable. I must have been about 10. We also watched the great classic Universal Monsters and Japanese monster movies together.

Horror movies never really bothered me. I've always had plenty of nightmares, but only one or two of them had any violence in them (most just have me in inescapable situations, being embarrassed or failing at something). It's also easier when you have an adult holding your hand when you see your first few...especially when they can tell you what other movies those actors were in or how fake blood is made. It takes a lot of the horror out of it when you know that Gregory Hines wasn't really mauled by a wolf because he was in that tap dancing movie a few years later.

Edit: I can't actually remember if Gregory Hines' character dies in Wolfen, but he has a line in that movie that I still quote today around certain company; "I've got a hand in the baggie." I guess you had to be there.

bmac, if you choose to watch another film with your daughter in the near future, I suggest Breakfast at Tiffany's. It's one of the ultimate mother-daughter films & one of the best films ever. It's girly/chick flick & it's been appreciated & loved by many generations, including me. I know some young people may be inclined to watch it because of the year it was released (1961) but the age of the film doesn't affect it all. You can't even tell. I'm sure you'll both fall in love with George Peppard's character (I did wub.gif) & be memerized the whole time by the legend, Audrey Hepburn. Just don't be too surprised if she asks you to take her to Tiffany & Co after laugh.gif. The simplicity of the plot, characters & love story makes it an absolute pleasure to watch. It also features of the greatest tunes in cinema history, Moon River which is composed by both Johnny Mercer (lyrics) & Harry Mancini (music). Audrey Hepburn was just marvelous, absolutely marvelous. I guarantee that you two will fall in love with the film, if you haven't already wub.gif. Wow, I really need to watch it again one these days...

I watched the Departed shortly after it was released on DVD. I couldn't take all the grisly violence & yeah, at 2.5 hours it seemed quite long laugh.gif. Leo was absolutely gorgeous though wub.gif. I guess it wouldn't be too akward if I watched it with my parents, depending if I had the option of fast forwarding through the sex scene laugh.gif.

I thought it was okay. I haven't seen the older version yet (going to rent it from the library next time I go). The camera was a little shaky, especially at the beginning. It stuck pretty close to the novel (which is what I like about those adaptations). I loved the actors who played Anne's father and sister; they were dead on. Mary was a little too over the top for me.

Northanger Abbey was good. It's kind of funny though. The way they ended the film completely twists the message at the end of the novel. Austen's whole ending was supposed to be neither endorsing nor condemning parental tyranny or children's disobedience. But the film took that message and turned it on it's head. Also, they made it more dramatic and secretive which is exactly what Austen was satirizing in the novel. I just found that completely hilarious. It's still a good movie but it bugs me a little.

I liked it, it was funny and the visuals are really good, especially for the time. It is a musical and has dance numbers that were supposed to be on stage but it was more like a visual experience, with cinematographic effects that are pretty awesome! I also really want to find The Fashions of 1934--with William Powell and Bette Davis!--and a quite a few other film, man I have so much to watch!

I finally read a review for Cloverfield. I just wanted to know if it succeeds in telling a decent story. About halfway into it, they give a description of what's tearing apart New York.

I'm kind of upset about knowing that.

I understand that, in order to give a decent review, you have to give up some vague plot details and stuff, but to go into great detail about the one mystery in the movie that's supposed to draw in the audience...That's uncalled for.

Plus the music was great--there is this one song I am sure played in Carnivale!

I also really want to find The Fashions of 1934--with William Powell and Bette Davis!--and a quite a few other film, man I have so much to watch!

Both of these look really interesting. I might have to check them out. I'm thinking both are pre-code but 1934 is borderline pre-code/code so I'm not sure. I've been watching a lot of pre-code and film noir lately. I should be getting The Third Man (1949) and The Maltese Falcon (1941) tomorrow from netflix. (I have a nice 4-day weekend so I can watch some movies!)

Cloverfield-Theater Report No Spoilers

IMAX Theater about 50% full

Snacks:Buncha Crunch and Vault

Trailers: Jumper, Wanted, Vantage Point, Umm No Star Trek Trailer

I know there were more but forgot them I remember thinking one was really cool but yeah can't remember it.

The MOVIE:

The most intense movie I have ever seen it's not even close or fair to try and compare it to another theatrical experience.

At first I thought I would not be able to watch the movie because of the handheld camera but after a couple minutes you do get used to it.

The monster you can't even begun to describe totally out of this world.

The acting was great I believed this was actually happening 100%.

Not sure what else to say without giving anything away just wow great movie really enjoyed it and nothing else has ever been made like it.

10 out of 10 right now as its been an hour + since I've seen it and I'm still in awe.

Sounds great, I'm gonna go see it tommorrow with a few friends and then sneak into There Will Be Blood. They are both supposed to be great.

I used to sneak into movies all the time. I was so proud of myself. laugh.gif Especially if they were bad movies. I paid for Varsity Blues and then snuck into She's All That. Two movies for the low price of $8.00 back in the day! Saturday afternoon, nothing to do, watch some stupid movies.

Ya, not sure about that, I'd love to look into the film codes more though, I don't know a lot about them. I was discussing it a little while ago--about couples (most often times married) not sharing a bed (like in the Thin Man films) and how sexual nuances, including pregnant women on film--were firmly abolished, were as violence was not.

Sounds interesting, tell me how you like 'em!

Today, for my english exam, we watched a Blade Runner and next week we have to write about it. I thought it was cool and revolutionary in many different ways, but I'm not a huge fan of this type of futurism and despotic science fiction. I didn't connect to in, but it was interesting and I had to watch it the whole way through at some point, so all in all it was pretty useful.

The first Thin Man film is a pre-code movie. (Note all the excessive drinking they do- which cracks me up)
The code was introduced in 1930- but wasn't put into effect until June 1934. Here's an article about it The Hays Code It's pretty interesting
