Mel Brooks was a genius. Young Frankenstein, The Producers, Blazzing Saddles, Silent Movie... Brilliant!

Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Dracula: Dead and Loving It... Blech

I will say this though. Mel Brooks' awful parodies are still a gazillion times better than any Epic Movie, Date Movie, Scary Movie or Meet the Spartans.

Definitely better than those movies. I agree with that.

QUOTE (Bailey08 @ Feb 19 2008, 08:21 PM) *
And Robin Hood: Men in Tights, while not a great movie, but it has its merits. At least it can entertain you for an 1hr and a half.

I agree, it makes me laugh and its kind of "stupid" humor, but that what makes everything so hilarious! I guess you have to be that kind of mood.

QUOTE (Diapers @ Feb 19 2008, 08:33 PM) *
Edit: BTW, J4N, I didn't mean to suggest that you had bad taste. What I meant to say is that if you think Men in Tights is funny, you should check out his older films.

I have! biggrin.gif Young Frankenstein is my favorite! I saw the Producers on Broadway with Richard Kind. That was too funny for words, when it's done right. Also, Blazing Saddles is a classic, I've seen that a few times. I like Robin Hood: Men In Tights too, I think the fact that Cary Elwes was in it and I love him! wub.gif Also, Richard Lewis was hilarious in it too!

QUOTE (Lenny9987 @ Feb 19 2008, 09:00 PM) *
Oh man, Mel Brooks is one of my all-time favorites. My brother got me a double pack with Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Spaceballs for my birthday last year. Funny, she doesn't look Druish. Classic.

My roommate bought Across the Universe last week and we watched it on Valentine's Day. It never really came out around here so we had to wait. Loved it though and would gladly have paid to see it in theaters.

Ooh, thats a good package!

Wasn't Across the Universe fantastic?!?! Aww, I wish you could have seen it on the big screen, it was quite an experience!

I know every line of every scene in that movie. I don't know why, but I just love it. You're right, it's not that great, but I laugh like an idiot every time I watch it. laugh.gif

Niiiiiice, thats skill. Thats how I feel about it too! Its fun to laugh at that kind of movie. laugh.gif

Same here biggrin.gif! I could quote that film for hours on end. One of my favourite scenes is when they're riding to the castle & they said something about the werewolf & Igor goes "There wolf. There castle". I don't know if that's the exact quote but man, I was laughing so hard. I literally had to pause the DVD so I wouldn't miss any quotes over my laugter rolling.gif. An absolute classic. Blazing Saddles is fantastic too.

And regarding Cary Elwes, he's extremely dreamy wub.gif. I want to meet him so he can say to me, "As you wish." That line is soooo romantic wub.gif.

Today I'm going to watch the first Pink Panther film. It's been a while since I seen it so I'm pretty excited biggrin.gif!

I just got back from class. We watched The Passion of Joan of Arc. Gosh, that was good. I know I watched it years ago in a small stuffy uncomfortable room. I probably was already sleepy and I can bet that that teacher didn't play it with the soundtrack. But this time, everything was perfect and I was completely moved. I'm going to have to buy that one.

I've wanted to see this for awhile. I heard it was an amazing movie- so I really need to add it to my netflix list

I got bored the other day and perused the DVD collection. Lots of random movies that I havent even seen. One that I chose was "Under the Tuscan Sun". I thought it might've been a good, mindless movie to watch in the afternoon. It was dull. Just thought I'd share.

That is why I'm a firm believer in not buying a movie you have never seen before. I've done it a few times, and the movies usually turn out to be duds. I end up selling them on Amazon and it just becomes a waste. It's cheaper to rent/netflix/pay-per-view/HBO etc. and then invest in the movies you love.

I watch Under the Tuscan Sun on an airplane, not paying attention, and that was enough for me. wink.gif

Yes well its a good thing I wasnt the one who bought it haha. I think my sister did and just didnt take it with her to school. I dont blame her.

I'm thinking of going to the library tomorrow and renting some movies. I always forget you can do that. Its free, so who needs Blockbuster? Haha.

I used to do that as a kid. There was this one movie they had about a kid who worked in a donut shop, and someone lost a ring in the donut and they had to eat/smash through all the donuts to find it. Doesn't sound like a plot for a whole movie, but when I was 6, I watched it. I have no idea what it was though! But that's what I think of when I think of renting things from the library. On VHS. If they have that, you should totally get it. wink.gif

Michael Clayton . . .
Powerful thriller, tight, compelling, all the cast is spot-on. It's one of those tortured kind of roles for George, (not as tortured as Syriana). Huge pay-off, loved the eff-you moment at the end.

It's up for best picture this year. I've been dying to see it since it came out, it got some of the best reviews I've ever seen for a movie. For example . . . I'm sure I'll be watching it at least one more time in the next day. happy.gif

The last time I got into this funk, I started renting TV shows instead. And it helped. And I got into Weeds, and that is a great show. So maybe I'll have to do that again.

I watched The Bourne Ultimatum last night. It was good. There's lots of great action, and the plot is strong enough to make you want to find out where the next turn is going to take you. I couldn't help but notice how it and the other two Bourne movies are just video games at their core. They all go a little like this...

Set up the basic premise at the beginning - Don't give away too many clues - You'll get those as you go along.

Fight a dozen henchmen - Fight a mini boss - Get another piece of the puzzle

Fight a dozen henchmen - Fight a mini boss - Get another piece of the puzzle

Fight a ton of henchmen and another mini boss - Meet the big boss and put the rest of the puzzle together

That's almost every Nintendo game that I can think of...and James Bond film. It's not a bad formula at all.

Still not a fan of the shaky-cam. It has it's moments, but making a whole movie like that is annoying.

We rented Mr. Bean's Holiday this week.
Mr. Bean's Holiday
Loved it! (but then, we love Mr. Bean) wub.gif
The movie is probably funnier if you already know and love Mr. Bean.

I think this one is our favorite. The park & sandwich scene makes me hysterical every time.

I've started and cancelled Netflix twice in the last year. The last time that happened I had a movie for a whole month and sent it back - unwatched. I hated that. But since then I've bought (and actually watched) a few dvds. I guess it's something I have to make time for - just like everything else.

I watched A Beautiful Mind last weekend. So disturbing and sad and brilliant.

A very moving film and story. Fortunately he was one of a small number of schizophrenics who sort of "grows" out of the disease, at least to a degree. Unfortunately, his son developed it as well, and has not been so lucky.

A Beautiful Mind is one of my all time favorite movies. Russel Crowe is brilliant and that story could carry itself even without such great performances. I could watch that over and over again. I actually did watch it again the first time I saw it, I watched it immediately after.

I've canceled it twice since I've had it too. And recently I had A Mighty Heart on my counter, and then sent it back without watching it. It just becomes a chore to watch movies, and I hate the feeling.

I saw A Beautiful Mind once in the theater, and I wasn't much impressed. I don't remember why, it was just a movie I had no desire to see again. But, everyone else loves it! I should watch it again.

I'm almost finished Chinatown, & it's one of the best frigging films ever! No wonder AFI ranks it as the 14th(??) best film of all time. Even though it pretty much revolves around water supply it's pretty interesting. I have about 35 minutes left but from what I watched so far, there's been quite some twists. The entire cast is fabulous, especially Jack Nicholson & Faye Dunaway. Speaking of Jack, he was dreamy when he was younger wub.gif. I guess I can't really say much more until I complete the film but I'm impressed with how great it is. I knew it was going to be spectacular but never this spectacular.

Has anyone watched American Gangster? It was recommended to me & I'm just wondering about violent it is. I mean, I handle most things but I'm not too crazy about seeing tons of blood & brains on the sidewalk. I'll still watch it but I need to know when to cover my eyes laugh.gif.

And when I finish Chinatown tonight, I'll watch the first Pink Panther film followed by A Shot In The Dark. Still, the best pink panther film IMO is The Pink Panther Strikes Again. I mean, it has that whole "does your dog bite" gag which is pretty darn hilarious & classic rolling.gif.

Huge, huge part of the history of the early days and development of Los Angeles, and the story continues today, (check out the book, Cadillac Desert if you want to read a great book on the subject). Is everyone ready to know what I thought of Heavenly Creatures?

I loved it! I thought it was really a great homage to this 60's suspense movies. I thought it shot in that style at least. Okay I did have a tiny issue with the whole clay figures but that's just 100% Jackson. Looking at his other early movies, I think he loved to work with puppet type characters.
The girl who played Gina, she was beyond creepy and kate winslet was so good.
It was a total early and more rough verison of Monster in a way. The whole best friend relationship that gets alittle too close for comfort, it seemed real. Even true stories can sometimes have that too scripted feel, but I didn't think like that with this one.
I will proberly watch this again. And now want to rent the others a few of you have suggested.

Oh and I don't know who's seen, Dead alive and Bite me, but it all looks like the same town. I am over the whole New Zealand thing though

I found it odd that they both would be let go so soon after and their only real punishment was not to see each other. I guess for them that was punishment enough. I would have thought they both would have managed to see one another or one of them would have killed themself.

All in all, it is a very well-made movie. I do respect it for that. But I just can't watch it again. Twice was enough for me. smile.gif

Pi gave me a headache, but I still liked it. I'd recommend The Fountain. We both love it, but we watched it with a friend of ours and he didn't like it. It's a very polarizing movie, I think. If you get the chance to see it in HD especially, I'd really recommend it then. It's got some very nice shots that look amazing in HD. I will say though that it might require repeat viewings.

I'm glad you liked it! I watched it in college and it still creeped me out. But it's a good movie.

Mr. PL has Dead Alive in the queue. I should think it'd be around that same area; it is NZ. biggrin.gif

Very cool. To this day, those girls aren't allowed to be near each other. Crazy.

I saw it when I was 14 and some of the images just haunted me.

So here's my cool trivia fact: Juliet Hulme moved to England and grew up to be a prolific mystery writer, using the pen name Anne Perry. I don't know if everyone here is a bookworm like me, but I've seen that name for years and I was surprised to find out that she was one of the girls from Heavenly Creatures.

For reasons that are past all my understanding, I adore You've Got Mail. If I'm down or blue or feeling blah, I'll pop that in and watch it all the way through. I just love that movie.

Dead alive is a riot. If you don't like blood, dont watch. If you loved the evil dead series, this movie is for you. But please please watch the ending and see what happens to the one old lady...it's worth it's weight in gold for that alone. And then remember this is the man who made LOTR rolling.gif

I was going to look up those girls, thanks for that link pax
