'Sank you smile.gif . The two leads really did work together & they're part of the reason why the film got four stars & swept all those major Oscar catergories. Luckily I saw IHON before Gone With The Wind, as I found Clark to be dreamy in that film too laugh.gif . I'll make him give a d@mn wub.gif laugh.gif . But his performance was really good too. He's no Cary Grant though. He's the ultimate leading man & will always be.

Ooh which films do you have on your netflix? Maybe I haven't seen 'em & I'm looking for "new" classics to watch, as TCM's selection hasn't been great lately. But, I requested Country Girl from my local library & I'm looking forward to watch it, even though it's a drama.

And yeah, I ended up watching Charade haha. I needed something with Paris & Cary.

I agree... Cary Grant is dreamy! biggrin.gif Here are the classics on my Netflix list... there are a lot tongue.gif.

An American in Paris, Shall We Dance, Neptune's Daughter, Gigi, Funny Face, Roman Holiday, The Thin Man, After the Thin Man, The Gay Divorcee, High Society, Dangerous When Wet, The Country Girl, The Lady Eve, Sullivan's Travels, Top Hat, The Bride Came C.O.D., Rita, Gilda, The Lady from Shanghai, Your Were Never Lovelier, Follow the Fleet, So Proudly We Hail!, On the Town, The More the Merrier, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Gone With the Wind, Breakfast at Tiffany's, My Fair Lady, Captain January, Little Miss Broadway, Come September, That Funny Feeling, If a Man Answers, Summer Stock, Charade.

I'll probably be adding more to the list soon too smile.gif. 2 of the above are on the "watch instantly" thing, but I'm hoping more will be soon so that I can avoid the mailing hassle. I'm a huge fan of Cary Grant, Sandra Dee, Rita Hayworth, Gene Kelly, Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Doris Day, etc. etc. etc..... I can't wait until we can get cable again so I can watch movies on AMC and TCM again smile.gif.

So, guess what we're watching next week? LOL. We're watching It Happened One Night. laugh.gif I've seen this movie twice already and love it as well. I can't wait to see it again. I might even move up to the front of the class to get a better view. Oh and I also agree 100% with PIP's review. smile.gif

The film class your taking sounds awesome BJB. I wish they offered something like that at my school. We don't have any film classes sad.gif

I've seen almost all of those movies laugh.gif Those are some great choices! Your going to love the Thin Man movies. I just rewatched the second one again the other night- such a great movie. A few I would recommend if you haven't seen them are Libeled Lady (hilarious), Stage Door, My Favorite Wife (Cary Grant and Irene Dunn), To Have and Have Not, Holiday, The Glenn Miller Story, The Shop Around the Corner, Two for the Road (a later Audrey Hepburn movie), Woman of the Year and The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (sorry I put so many laugh.gif )

I bolded all the films I watched & my top three recommendations are:

1. Breakfast at Tiffany's
2. Roman Holiday
3. The Thin Man

Breakfast at Tiffany's is the ultimate classic girly film, with Audrey Hepburn at her best. Roman Holiday is another Audrey film & this one is a bittersweet dramedy. The shots of Rome are spectacular. And with The Thin Man, it's frigging hilarious rolling.gif. The banter between the two leads is great.

An American In Paris is good too. It's a musical with the ever so dreamy Gene Kelly wub.gif. And Charade is fabulous too. It's the one I watched last night & the great thing about it is that it has Cary Grant. The shower scene is a riot laugh.gif.

Yep. It's one of my favourites too. My only complain is that I felt Humphrey Bogart was miscast. I always admired him as an actor because of his abilites but I just thought that the role wasn't right for him. Seeing him as the male lead in a romantic comedy didn't seem right. He's better suited for those tough guy roles like The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon etc. I personally think that Cary Grant would've done much better in the role of Linus, as I could actually believe him loving Sabrina. With Bogart, it seemed forced & I didn't feel any chemistry. Apparently he was ticked off because Audrey got the role instead of his wife, Lauren Bacall & IMO, Audrey was better suited for the role of Sabrina. Those are her kind of characters.

Yeah, I didn't feel any chemistry between them too. It kind of made it seem like he didn't really like her in the movie.

The valley if Elah is out. I need to rent this. And this other movie called Niagara motel. It looks funny and quirky. It has kevin Pollack and craig ferguson. It's about a group of people who are lows in their life and meet at this little motel.

I watched Death at Funeral last night. It's even funnier the second time around. Anyone who loves a warped, dark, British comedy get to a Best Buy or fire up Netflix to watch this movie. It'll have you rolling on the ground - oh wait, that's what a dead body at funeral is supposed to do. rolling.gif It's so wrong, it's good.

I watched It Happened One Night & I can't believe how long it's been. I love that film oh so much. And Mr.Gable, you can dunk me anytime you want wub.gif. Well, maybe back than cause yeah. Anyway, I still tear up when Ellie confesses to Peter that she loves him. Part of me wishes he confessed his feelings but I was much more content with her running away at her own wedding & watching the walls of Jericho come down. The comedy aspect of the film was pretty good too. I always thought Clark was more of a comedian than a serious actor. I can totally understand how this film won all 5 leading Oscars. In fact, it was the first film to sweep all the major catergories. It's one of those marvelous films that you always have time for & at the end, you always manage to have smile on your face even though you know what happens everytime. And phew, the chemistry was fab. I saw the sparks from the get go. Oh, what a lovely, lovely film.

Tomorrow evening will probably be Libeled Lady or Charade, as I'll be busy the next few nights.

ITA, I LOVE that picture biggrin.gif wub.gif!

We watched "All Quiet On The Western Front" last night in my class. I remember watching it twice in High School, but couldn't remember how I felt about it or if I felt anything. But I think being sick has kinda fogged up my judgment, because all I wanted to do was get out of there. It's very hard to watch a movie when you feel that way.

For my class, this was supposed to be our introduction into two things: The Talkies (or just plain sound in film) and The Studio System. So, I tried to pay really close attention to the sound in this film and imagine what it would have been like to have watched it for the first time in 1930. It was really rich.

But alas I'm still mainly a visual person, so what really struck me was the last scene. I couldn't remember how it ended in the film, but I certainly remember how it ended in the book. I was curious throughout the whole movie, to see how it was dealt with. I really do like how they handled it. Oh, and this very very final image, just haunts me.

So, guess what we're watching next week? LOL. We're watching It Happened One Night. I've seen this movie twice already and love it as well. I can't wait to see it again. I might even move up to the front of the class to get a better view. Oh and I also agree 100% with PIP's review.

I agree. I didn't put any stock in the accuracy, I was more interested in the idea of how these elements of her novels could have occurred to her in the normal course of her life and experience. I know those parts of the story were (I'm sure), entirely fictional, but it still made it possible to see how it could have happened. I liked that.

Tonight I watched Robin Hood: Men In Tights & my gawd, it was frigging hilarious rolling.gif. I can't decide which Mel Brooks film is better, this one or Young Frankenstein. He was great though laugh.gif. The rest of the cast were great as well, & Cary Elwes was dreamy wub.gif. The best scene was with Dom DeLuise (Don Giovanni). I watched Double Harness (1933) tonight. It's up on TCM.com for free viewing either for the week or month (I can't remember). I liked it- it was very short at only about 70 minutes. Its unfortunate that this movie isn't available on DVD- but so many unknown classic movies will probably never be released. I am glad I got to see it though

30 days of night. I watched 30 days of night and it was way too long. The whole idea of the story is good, but once the vampires started talking in some sort of star trek klingon language I was all that's it I'm reading the paper. I finished it though. Everything looks more bloody if you put it against a snowy backdrop. It was okay, not great but just really long.

Bummer about 30 Days of Night. That's been on my list.

I made the two-hour round-trip to see Diary of the Dead this morning. It was totally worth it. I don't think it compares too well with Night, Dawn and Day, but to me it's a much stronger movie than Land of the Dead. Romero's social commentary is usually hidden just beneath the surface, but in this one, he sort of beats you over the head with it. Still, it works very well.

The whole point behind the road movie section of the film is to get the gang of travelers to Scranton. Nice touch. smile.gif

As far as I can tell, it's only playing in one theater in IL.

I don't normally look for social commentary in movies. It's usually pretty obvious in George Romero (and George Lucas) films though. Like, in Dawn of the Dead, a few dozen people, including one of the heroes, would have survived in the end if they weren't so darn greedy. In Day of the Dead, an entire ten-year(?) operation falls apart just a few hours after a military takeover. Land of the Dead isn't very subtle at all..."Don't trust the media - Do your own fact checking". Something like that anyway.

It looks like 30 Days of Night is on the agenda for next Saturday. I sure hope it doesn't suck. >:-[ <-- That's supposed to be a vampire who wants to suck your blood.
