just joining the thread, although I will have to temper myself on this one, as movies are my speciality. The last thing I need is a soapbox. ^_~
I have to say that 40 year old virgin is just one of the most amazing movies! I loved that it wasn't slapstick. It was just genuinely funny in a rather believable way. What I love about it is that it's not strictly a comedy -- it's actually a fantastic romance story as well as a "growing up" story (I would say coming of age, but I think being 40 puts you well past that mark). Steve Carell's transformation from an awkward, friendless loner to a happy, responsible manager, friend, and boyfriend is really genius. You don't see that much care and realism in most comedies.
As for new movies, I wanted to make some recommendations!
On friday I just saw "Stranger than Fiction" for the second time, and it's a great film. Solid all the way around, and an interesting dark comedy that goes literary, satirical, and heartwarming all at once. It's out on dvd very soon.
But the best movie, EVER, is "Children of Men." I think it's seriously one of the best films made in the past five years, maybe more. Alfonson Cuaron is a genius, no contest. In the years to come they will be studying this in film school and putting it on every AFI list. Go see it while you still can!
over and out

Is anyone else thinking of seeing HANNIBAL RISING when it comes out next week?
Anyway, anyone else have any thoughts on this movie?
I'm not sure I'm going to see HR in the theater or not, but I will definitely watch it when it comes out on DVD. I am a HUGE Hannibal fan (the character, not necessarily the movie). I am probably one of the VERY few who wished that Clarice had ran off with him in the movie Hannibal- as she did at the end of Hannibal the book. If you want me to defend my “twisted” thinking on that- I will.
I've read all of the books including Hannibal Rising. Hannibal (the book) hinted at some of the events that unfold in the prequel and thus many wonder if Hannibal Rising was necessary. Still, Hannibal Rising spells out more clearly how Hannibal became the way he chose to be (a shameful attempt to make that kinda funny). Hannibal Rising was my least favorite of the books, but I still enjoyed it for what it was and I will look forward to seeing the movie in due time. Believe it or not, Thomas Harris left room open at the end of Hannibal Rising for a second prequel to come before Red Dragon and after Hannibal Rising. We'll see.
As for the discussion about Office Space, I agree that Office Space is hilarious. Upon first viewing...funny, second...even funnier, third & more...hilarious.
For comedies though Tommy Boy's glory will never fade for me. I know it's in a totally different vein, but it still cracks me up. Chris Farley- man I miss that guy.
Brownhb,
Stranger than Fiction was indeed a great film! I really enjoyed it. I second your recommendation!

Oh God, Office Space is a under rated movie. I've sat and watched it maybe close to 50 times. And everytime I laugh more and more.
Stayed up and watched The Goonies and Animal house. Tonite I'm going to watch Stand By Me. Proberly the best steven king movie ever.

I just got done watching "Office Space" for the first time it was a pretty good movie

That is the most amazing movie... not to sound too Michael Scott-y, but when I found out that the office where I worked (several years ago) was going to get "absorbed" (as in, shut down) by a competitor, I immediately held a "morale meeting" with my team. What did we do? We ordered pizzas and watched "Office Space."
The scene where they pound the bejesus out of the recalcitrant printer is truly beautiful! It was a good way to realize that we didn't need the company, since it clearly didn't need us!

I finally got around to watching Batman Begins last night. It was much better than I expected. I figured I would probably end up turning it off due to too much violence, but it was the kind of violence without a lot of blood, which I can tolerate just fine. (Yeah, all you Rome lovers, I could never make it through five minutes of that show- my blood tolerance level is at "papercut" status!)
And I mean, come on. Watching Christian Bale run around for two hours is never a waste of time. (I've loved that boy since I saw him in Newsies.)
Here's the thing that I thought was odd, though: Nearly all of the lead roles were played by Brits. Kind of funny for an "American" franchise.

Most big name superhero movies tend to shy away from blood. The only exception I can think of is Danny DeVito spewing black blood out of his mouth at the end of Batman Returns. What the heck was Tim Burton thinking?

I made the mistake of renting Daredevil when that first came out on video. I think I made it through the first twenty minutes or so before I gave up and turned it off. What was it now, I can't even remember....nails being thrown into people's necks or something like that? Yuck.

but whats not to like about Jane Austen? That movie was up there with P&P and Sense and Sensibility

Did you know that Ciarán Hinds who played Captain Wentworth was Firmin in The Phantom of the Opera. I thought that was interesting.
