I think I'm going to need to rent Persuasion!

For now I'm watching: The Usual Suspects

Finished watching Persuasion. I loved it biggrin.gif but whats not to like about Jane Austen? That movie was up there with P&P and Sense and Sensibility biggrin.gif Did you know that Ciarán Hinds who played Captain Wentworth was Firmin in The Phantom of the Opera. I thought that was interesting.

I'm so glad you loved it. Isn't it amazing how Amanda Root clearly wasn't wearing any makeup, but you could literally watch her bloom over the course of the movie as she spent time around Wentworth and her other admirers? And I loved how she finally, was the one who had to decide her destiny, kind of like another heroine we all care about . . .

Yes! Yes! Yes! It has one of those moments in the middle where you just flat-out gasp. Loved it.

Yay - another Dead Again fan (the first I've ever met, so pardon my excitement)!!!

I also loved Kenneth Brannagh's version of "Much Ado about Nothing" - finally, someone who gets that Shakespeare is supposed to be coarse and raw and funny. The fact that his chemistry with Emma was just smokin' hot made it even better.

And, Cate, I am delighted that you enjoyed Persuasion. Maybe there should just be a law that Jane Austen films must be produced by the British, so that there isn't the American need to sex them up and dumb them down.

Since I seem to be finding some kindred spirits on this board (not unlikely, since we all have the high standards of TO!), I'd love to hear if anyone out there saw and enjoyed Stranger than Fiction (in my opinion, the best US film since Groundhog Day)...

Soooo funny and well done. When I was teaching in Pittsburgh, we took the entire junior and senior classes, (about 80 students), to downtown Oakland to the Beehive to see it. What a day. And they loved it too. And the women's costumes! . . . . well that's for the "Boobs" thread. tongue.gif

Brownhb,
Stranger Than Fiction was indeed a great film! I really enjoyed it. I second your recommendation!

Brownhb mentioned this movie a few days ago!

I was actually so moved by the film that I made an appointment for the following day to cut off my hair! (Over 11 inches!- Locks of Love!)

It was something I had wanted to have the courage to do all my life (as I have always worn my hair long), but never had the guts to follow through with...

Whoops - sorry about that! The author's voice that is narrating my life must have been extra loud that day. Still, glad to hear that others saw and enjoyed that amazing movie!

laugh.gif I've been trying to convince a friend to watch it.... that may be the incentive he needs. wink.gif

Next to P&P, this is probably my all-time favorite movie. It has more laugh out loud moments for me than any other.
My favorite line: "No! The world must be peopled!"

I love this movie, but then I love when Branagh does Shakespeare. I'm really hoping that Branagh's Hamlet comes out on DVD soon - that version was really good. Branagh had really good chemistry with Thompson in Henry V as well even though their scenes were pretty short at the end, but then those scenes are so sweet anyways.

Lucky you - back in my school days (that was before there were these new-fangled "movin' pic-churs" mind you) we never got to do ANYthing that cool. The best "book extension" that our not-so-motivated teacher could come up with was taking us to a production of "The Cherry Orchard" at a nursing home. Seriously.

Even now, I find that I have to go to/rent all of the movies that I want to see alone - my husband (who isn't such a bad guy) prefers to watch Jacka$$, in all of its incarnations.

Hmmm... wonder if that is why I'm up on these boards?

Uh oh. I wouldn't reccomend to see "Because I Said So" it got really bad reviews, ie. a D+ In Entertainment Weekly and one star in the newspaper.

But, there is no stopping the desperate need of a chick flick. wink.gif

Let me start out with a disclaimer: I never, ever knock movies, especially black and white movies but I just finished watching (or rather fast forwarding) through the 1940 version of Pride and Prejudice. It was awful beyond words. I really wanted to enjoy it- but not even Laurence Olivier could save this movie. This was the only version I hadn't seen of P&P and I was really excited to finally see it. There was no connection between the actors playing Darcy and Elizabeth and I think Elizabeth was very miscast. I also didn't like the fact that they changed the time period to the Victorian Period rather than the Edwardian Period. This was a very Hollywood version and even Mary was made to look pretty. I'll just stick to the '95 BBC version and the 2005 version thanks wink.gif

Yeah, it's Lawrence Olivier and Greer Garson, but it's pretty terrible. They really strayed from the book and lost all the charm in the process. It might as well have had a different title.

I hated that one too! One year I got it as a Christmas present (a mistake - I'd asked for the BBC version), and it was painful. I can't decide if it was that they were trying to make it into a coy, cute, drawing-room style comedy, or if they had all coincidentally sustained head injuries before filming began.

Terrible. Absolutely terrible. "Clueless" was vintage, classic Jane Austen compared to that dreck.

I've always found that anything written around a philosophizing package of fries, a befuddled shake, and charming meatwad is worth notice as an up-and-coming artform.

Adult Swim is truly one of my guilty pleasures.

This is technically a TV movie- but what does everyone think of North and South? I had always heard really awesome things about it- so over the summer I finally got it from my local library. I went to the plantation they filmed it at 2 years ago. (That place is beautiful ) Anyway, I started watching it (the first disk) and found it really enjoyable. I also watched the 2nd disk. But when I got to the other side of the 2nd disk I started to get really bored with it. I dunno if it was just too much to watch or what. I do know one thing that bothered me really bad was the bad hairstyles all throughout the movie (yes I realize it was made it the 80's laugh.gif ) I eventually stopped watching it. By that time I really didn't care about the main couple (Orry and Madeline) anymore- I didn't like their relationship from the beginning and found it very boring. I know it was a big thing when it first came on TV and it still is today. Maybe I'm missing something? I just don't see the big appeal- and I love Civil War era movies and books. Maybe if I'd seen it when it first came on TV I would have liked it better laugh.gif

I really will put a good movie review up again- my last two have been so negative tongue.gif
