JAM4Never, totally agree with you about Do That Thing You Do, I remember that movie, ha. 13 Going on 30 is also definitely a good flick, I mean it's not awesome like LOTR or West Side Story, but it's good.

Seee ^^^ you said it was definitely a good flick and it was good...

^^ I was pleasantly surprised by 13 Going on 30 and have actually watched it more than once (which means I like it a lot).

I haven't seen any movies lately cause I'm either studying, watching Deadwood or am on these boards. So here's my list of all-time favorites, in no particular order and subject to revisions or additions:

The Godfather, Part II
Rashomon
The Thin Man
A Philadelphia Story
Run Lola, Run
Memento
All About Eve
Prisoner of the Mountains
Monsoon Wedding
Bella Martha (which is going to be Americanized w/ Catherine Zeta-Jones! Blegh!)
Shop Around the Corner
L.A. Confidential
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Amelie
Persuasion
Sense and Sensibility
Ikiru (To Live)

Some honorable mentions:
Master and Commander
Gladiator (can you see a Russell Crowe theme here?)
Shall We Dance? (the original)
East / West
Scenes from a Marriage
JAM4NEVER
Gladiator is simply the best.

Joaquin was spectacular
and not to mention Russell.

Love it.
JAM4EVA_1
Ooh, Master and Commander, very niiiice pick!

Anyone watched SUPERMAN RETURNS? I saw that on opening night, and just recently debated buying it on DVD.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

Likes:

- Brandon Routh plays a very good Superman (sleeker than Christopher Reeve, but not as buff)
- The flying scenes are done very well (there have been visible improvements since 1978)
- They got Kevin Spacey as Lex Luthor (one of the finest actors possible for the role)
- Lois actually rescues Superman at one point (nice change of pace)

Dislikes:

- The revelation about Lois' kid (this was the big disappointment for me)
- Routh's Clark Kent was too one dimensional (just like Reeve's unfortunately)
- The colors were off (supes' costume is blue and red, not blue and burgundy; and his hair is black not brown)
- Spacey plays Lex too much like Gene Hackman (utterly wrong direction to go with the character)

Still debating ...

I rented Scoop and the Gathering via Netflix over the weekend - both were horrible! Woody Allen needs to stop!

Scoop was HORRENDOUS. A complete waste of time. I haven't seen The Gathering, but I absolutely second your assesment of Scoop!

I think Scarlett is very beautiful, but I find the majority of her acting to be like fingernails on a chalkboard. She actually makes me cringe sometimes.

Yesterday was movie day for me. I watched:

Firewall: Poor Harrison Ford. What has happened to you???
Elizabethtown: I actually really liked this movie- quirky and fun, and not too cutesy.
Failure to Launch: Gag me. Please. Funny at times, but with painful slapstick humor thrown in that didn't seem to fit the rest of the movie. And Sarah JP just gets on my nerves to no end.

I agree - Scarlett is beautiful, but a crappy actress.
JAM4NEVER
Scoop was not even a complete movie....it just randomly ended.

I like Elizabethtown too... something that you have to watch a couple times to get the significance of it, Orlando was good I thought for his first NON-PERIODIC movie....you know like LOTR and Pirates, Troy, Kingdom of Heaven,. etc, etc.
Fechin
I thought Firewall was decent.

I can't wait to buy some of the new DVDs today biggrin.gif

The Departed and I may pick up Marie Antoinette not sure if that one is worth buying though or not hmm...
JAM4NEVER
Fechin,
I wouldn't buy Marie Antoinette.
The movie itself has a raw storyline that didn't really play out.
There were several scenes of Dunst staring out a window or playing in the garden with her daughter.
Although, the dresses and hair and shoes and food were beautiful.

In my opinion, it was more art than a real movie.

But, I reccommend renting it to see what I am talking about.
fleece_it_out
on Sunday I went to the movies with a couple of friends and we saw Because I Said So. Umm...it was ok. A little awkward becasue it was 6 girls and one boy (who was bored and had nothing better to do, in his own words), and when they started describing *******....yeah. a little awkward.

Haha! My sister had a theory that Orlando Bloom was probably a robot and that's why he only played in period pieces. I always thought that was really wierd, too!
Fechin
Well I did see it in theaters JAM 4 NEVER wink.gif

Yeah I am on the fence about buying it...DVDs are just one of those hobbies of mine. I kinda buy them even if they are just "rentals" lol.

Odds are I should just wait until it goes on sale in a few months.

I am so glad I'm not the only woman who doesn't like Tom Cruise. I've always hated him. Even before he was branded a weirdo. I just don't get why women are attracted to him.

Hey G. if you're out there, I watched East of Eden last night. James Dean -- wow! Very intense, and loved the scenes of my favorite place on Earth, the Monterey area. But the movie really only covered the second half of Steinbeck's book and I think the chopped off the end of the story as well . . . hmmmmm. . . loved what was there, just wished there was more.

A: That movie was awful. I got stuck watching it on a plane. B: Parts of it hit a little too close to home...except for how he began the movie as a playa.

wow! this was a perfect assesment of this movie. unfortunately i was really looking forward to this movie cause i find marie antoinette really interesting, but there wasn't really a story. it seemed like they were trying to make jsut a biography of her life, but it didn't capture any of the stuff that made her an interesting historical figure in the first place. but i do agree, the costumes, and the scenery was gorgeous.
JAM4NEVER
Well, I am glad someone agress, Sneakers.

I have to admit, it was entertaining, but not intriquing. I don't see how people say Dunst was amazing in that! <She didn't even act.

But, I have to say the music was an A+in my book.
Anyone know the featured song, goes like," I don't want to be forgotten...."
In the scene where she told off that brat of a lady and is running... Anyone?

I'm watching Sense and Sensibility right now. Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman) is such a romantic hero in this movie - I'm at the part where he goes looking for Marianne and then carries her into the house soaking wet (great parallel to her earlier meeting with Willoughby). His inability to focus on anything and desire to do something to help (when he offers to go get Mrs. Dashwood) is so sweet! Perhaps all this gushing should have gone on the Jane Austen thread! I love this movie!
Fancy_New_Becca
lol just friends isn't a oscar contender but reynolds is hot.
Muffy cruise is just plain strange all the way around. I dont get why she married him. They look so mismatched. I thought he came out with this quote recently that he said he believes that he is like the second coming for his church. Man is nuts.

people who need to be put on a boat floated out to the middle of the ocean and then sunk...

tom cruise
bono
hillary clinton
sean penn
drew barrymore(she can just be too freakin' happy)
james wood
zach braff
trya banks
jessica simpson
britney spears

could go on and on but thats just a mere handful

HOW DARE YOU!

BONO? Why? What has he ever done besides make the world a better place!??!?!?!
Zach Braff???? <are you mental?

Now I agree with the Hilary Clinton, Drew Barrymore, Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears...

But, Sean Penn...? What is wrong with you?
Fechin
BONO RULES
Fancy_New_Becca
seems i've touched a nerve, well braff cause his high pitch voice at times sounds like nails down a chalk board and when that happens I dont find him funny in the least.
Penn, cause I do not like or let a celeb mold my opoions on how to vote or how the nation should be ran. I find that very annoying
and bono cause I hate to say, but his one man mission to save the world leaves me feeling alittle irked when he soley focuses on one point. I get he has several issues he does alot of work for. And I actually find that work to be very resepctable. But I just tend to be more involded in issues that hit closer to home.

and plus he cut the mullet
muffyduffy
^ Someone just recommended that movie to me yesterday. I think I'll pass.
bubblewrap_1
I saw Music and Lyrics tonight. Not too bad- it was at least entertaining. I like Hugh Grant anyway. My only problem with the movie was really bad (horrible) editing- it was hard not to miss it. It's probably more of a rental if anything. But like I said- still entertaining. The ending was cute.

Super Troopers is one of funniest movies ever. watched it again last nite. I never get tired of it.

Thanks for the review BW.

Still not sure what movie to see this weekend. Or maybe I'll see more than one LOL

I mean seriously,

NOTHING.

Too bad if he doesn't do something that is closer to home.

Wait, nevermind that because elimination AIDS should be close to home...
JAM4NEVER
Anyway,
I saw Catch and Release last night.
Despite all of the harsh reviews, I thought it was very cute.
A good story and good plot.
Jennifer Garner performed yet another 13 Going 30.
Her accomplice, Timothy Olypant wasn't half bad either!
The music was wonderful and the scenery as well.
I would recommend to see it.
JAM4EVA_1
I love Ryan Gosling.
JAM4EVA_1
Amazing actor, and major hotty alert. wink.gif Also nominated for an Oscar!

I have nothing but respect for the way in which Bono has used his fame in such a positive way, but I think he has always had an over-developed sense of self-importance that I find to be annoying at times.
JAM4NEVER
I think that he has an over-developed sense of self importance because he wants to do so much, but he can't.
Come on, pretty much all rockers think they are sooooo important...
