I'm not trying to be **s but after allowing sarah Silverman to be a racist on the show, the other night with the Mr. Met - they hired some old Chinese woman to man the clothesline - only the Chinese do laundry - only the Chinese would hang a clothesline? Seems to be on pretty iffy ground - what was the thinking? Hey, we have a laundry skit, let's get a Chinese woman ... Is it funny in an ironic sense or just flat out Sarah Silverman racist? ... I would think being in NYC, you could see beyond alledged stereotypes ... and while the rest of the show was typical Conan hilarious, that skit wasn't even funny and to top it off with that bad taste? Late night writers have to get out a little more and see more than Charlie Chan movies ...

uh...what?
That thought never crossed my mind. I can understand questioning the use of a Chinese woman in that sketch, but you can't bring Sarah Silverman's joke into it. Why? Because no one at "Late Night" wrote that joke for her. She did that all herself. Most of Conan's interviews are not scripted, the guest will know what basic areas Conan will ask them about, but what they say while on that couch is purely them (unless written by thier agent or studio.) Sometimes the "Late Night" writers will help "punch up" a guest's material (the Governator comes to mind) but it has to meet network standards. The joke would never had made it into the script, let alone into rehershal, and NEVER on TV. Sorry, Sarah Silverman's joke is not a valid argument.
However, I don't think the writers at "Late Night" intended anything by using that woman in that sketch. Here are two possibilities for why they used her in that bit:
1) She works there and they needed someone to be in the skit. They use Pierre Bernard all the time for bits and he's not an actor. He's one of their graphic designers.
2)This bit may have been a tribute to a movie the writers love. If you noticed, as Mr. Met approched the closeline, the camera work was different. Everything slowed down. This might be a tribute to a classic war movie (TV writers, especially comedy writers, do this ALL the time)and maybe she looked like the woman in that movie.
The guys at "Late Night" don't seem to be a bunch of jerks looking to make fun of different races and ethnic groups. They're trying to put on a funny show. I never take offense when they make fun of people with my background because I know they aren't doing it to make some sort of statement.
