Sorry if we confused you, vurt. A lot of critics and people who don't watch CI say that they're turned off by Goren's charcater because he's so odd or such a know-it-all, or...well, a lot of the endearing traits that we like to call "quirky". Since so many of us find him attractive for a variety of reasons, while so many other (normal?) people thinks he's just weird, I was proposing a thread where we discuss the reasons we think Goren is so great. In other words, what draws us to the character, and (for us ladies) more specifically to Goren as a man.

I personally think VDO has found the right balance of traits that make Goren a nearly perfect man, and that's why I like him. I would be more than happy to expound on this in great detail, if anybody else wants to join in and make a thread of it.

Oh - I didn't even notice that vurt got hurt.. (<-- Hey!) I'll have to go back and see the comment placement, but for now:

No, no babe - It's aaalll jokes with a just a little side comment thrown in about how critics and casual viewers find Goren to be an annoying, pompous freak - not that you feel that way. Didn't mean to cause any alarm or ill-feelings...

EDIT: The hurt reply placement being where and to the extent that I thought it might be, I'll leave this comment here, as is, keeping the two "no harm, no foul" explanations back to back...

Check out "Crash". Not the recent Oscar contender, but the one from 1996 with James Spader, Holly Hunter, Elias Koteas, Debra Unger, and Rosanna Arquette. We accidently rented it in the barracks one night, and spent the whole movie going "WTF? Whoever picked this one is never allowed to go the vidoe store again!" Sick and twisted little fim about re-enacting famous fatal car crashes and deriving sexual pleasure from the viewing/participation. I think it's rated NC-17, and it might be hard to find, but it's worth it just to see all those names in something so few people have even heard of, much less seen.

You know, I'd heard about that one for a hot second! Didn't realize so many "names" were in it though; James Spader's being the only one that doesn't surprise me at all. Ever see Secretary? Though, Two Days in the Valley might have been enough to securely place him as one to be in such a film as well - kind of wish VDO had been involved in that one...

Awe, thanks for your post, cause Vurt did get hurt. sad.gif
Can you tell I'm of the sensitive sort. I can't see how anyone can dislike Goren to the point of actually hating him. I mean, ok, not everyone likes everyone else, characters included, but Goren is such a kind, sweet, good, defend all vulnerable, intelligent, and even understanding to certain 'bad guys' type of man. He had a horrible childhood with a drunken mean father and a sick psychotic mother but instead of wallow in his sorrows, he became a good, educated, empathetic man that became a detective to help others. He even takes care of his sick, schizophrenic mother. So how can anyone hate him? Your last statement on that post that hurt vurt, (I like the way that rhymes smile.gif ) is the perfect statement to go with my question.

Naydi:
I second that emotion... Ironic how some people think there's something freakishly wrong with him. Guess there's no accounting for others' perception of what truly human reality is...

I can just imagine those type of people are pretty empty inside, or full of not so good karma. (Yes Goren is a character, but still, it's the character they dislike.)

Bwalter: I absolutely love your post/posts. You never fail to fill me with joy and laughter.
That would be something to see, Goren kissing VDO. laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif
I can actually image it somewhat cause, coincidentally, I surfed on YouTube yesterday, and I found a clip of VDO. It was a compilation of him kissing people from various films he's done. All kissy, kissy, kissy. Hmmm, I think I'll add a link for everyone's pleasure. I believe it's allowed as long as there's no NBC - LOCI involved, which there isn't cause he hasn't kissed anyone there, yet, that we know of anyway. tongue.gif

Ok, ladies and gents, buckle your seatbelts and enjoy the ride. If you have a problem with watching boys kissing boys, don't bother watching this clip, cause he kisses everyone in it. Here we go, enjoy. smile.gif

I really think that you should fly that idea for the thread by Rowe first, cause she just deleted a thread similar to that not too long ago. It was concidered 'creepy' by alot of people. Do you remember her taking a poll from the regulars if we didn't mind her deleting the thread? I guess the fact that this board is the 'Official' NBC CI board, that's VDO's employer, we should have a higher amount of control and respect for his privacy than other VDO sites do. I believe it was called 'The thread to show your 'love' for VDO/Goren', or something like that. So you can see how it's kinda similar to your idea. Don't get me wrong, I liked alot of the posts on that thread, and I posted and defended the idea of it on the thread as well, and I'd love to have a thread like the one you're talking about, but I just wanted you to remind you, or tell you, if you didn't know about what happen, before you go to all that trouble for nothing.

So, anyway, vurt: this is more what I was thinking. A lot of people only tune in for one ep, or not even that much. So they don't know Bobby's history, they haven't observed his actions over a period of time, they only see this weird guy who seems to have all the answers when everybody else is standing around with their thumbs up their butts looking clueless. (Try to imagine it's your first time watching, and you've only seen one random ep, or only a few scenes from one).

So my question isn't in the vein of "I wanna have BG's baby" (especially since we all know that I already have), but more "What was it about Goren that kept us watching when other people changed the channel? What drew us to this character?"

Yup, that'd be me. Too many of my own nightmares to sit through a horror movie, and I grew up on a Nike Missile site near Three Mile Island, so those coolant towers (and images of mushroom clouds) still give me the willies.

Now Deliverance...that was my platoon's Holy Grail during PLDC at Ft Lewis. We used it for our class motto (and quoted it endlessly amongst ourselves), and asked to be allowed to watch it the night before graduation. Love that movie!

(Alas, as with most films, it would have been better with VDO - in any role).

Okay, so let me tell you what has been taking up so much time of me...like I said I`m on two other message boards, one about The Mole, I think you know the show. And obviously my internship. I study psychology, neuropsychology to be precise and I`m interning in a sort of mental hospital (even though that is NOT the term for it, because that doesn`t exist in this country, it has a different name). There is a separate part of this institution for elderly people and that`s where I am. My department has 4 subdepartments and the one I have to do with is the subdepartment with elderly people with cognitive or/and behavioural problems. Those are clients that live there, but I also have to do with people who live at home. My specialty are the cognitive problems and the implications this has on people. So I have to map the cognitive abilities of these people, but there is also a lot of psychiatry that just runs straight through all of it. That`s what makes it such a great place, because it`s not a so formally defined, it`s a lot of things in one person and even if one thing is not my specialty, you can`t separate it from the rest of the person, because it all influences each other. It`s very very VERY interesting! And it just rewarding to be able to do something for someone, even though that person doesn`t always see it that way. Anyway, our goal is to see if someone can still live at home with some help, or to get someone a good place in a nursing home (where they can deal with the problems that particular person has).

It all sounds very dark now, but it`s really not. Some people there are truly psychiatric patients (although on my subdepartment that not the reason they are admitted, it`s the cognitive of behavioural part that stands out), but some are basicly just old people with a really really really bad memory.

And these people are like books. Because all old people are and these people especially.

So I hope that`s enough for now smile.gif, because I need to get ready for bed again, I`m very very tired. I probably forgot to say some stuff, but I`ll read it again tomorrow or so smile.gif.

Bye!

Hi Seraph! Welcome "home"!

Sounds like your people and my people need to get together and share some people! I used to be with the USC psycho/neurolinguistics lab, where we studied the effects of normal aging and dementia on cognitive procesing vis a vis changes in the production and comprehension of language (aural and written). Of course, our focus was not so much on general cognitive changes as it was a way to shed light on normal cognitive/language processing through comparison with the changes secondary to both normal and pathological aging.

Anyway, glad to see you're back, and remember young lady, the next time you stay out this long naydi and I expect a phone call (or at least a PM) to let us know you're okay. Also, my nephew made it safely to Baumholder, so I may send him to look you up one of these days.

Well, if you find yourself now drawn to seeing and learning all you can about their development and destructive capability as I am, while Original Child Bomb shows more complete declassified material of the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it then devolves into a heavy-handed sappiness about the bombings that completely underminds and destroys the weight of the meditation. Atomic Cafe is much better at showing a point of view about the assinine prevailing state of mind of those involved with the whole development and testing of the bomb, while still leaving room for you to fill in your own emotion. Also, someone had drawn my attention a few years back to a BBC-produced film along the lines of The Day After, called Threads; ended up getting a copy via eBay. As hard as it is to imagine, it casts a much bleaker and darker image of the aftermath and the lot of survivors than TDA did. (strangely, first time I saw TDA -yeeeears after it first came out, somehow she knew better than to let us watch that- my mind twisted the end statement into reading that what was depicted was worse than what would be... quite the strong subconscious defense move, no? huh.gif )

LOL we can all blame our parents for one thing or another. It's how we over come them, and the extent we over come them that is important. I know this is somewhat? off the thread, but I can remember several times being reminded that at anytime, I could lose my family, the way of life that I was familar with and during my life as a child, had several beatings, and verbal abuse to back that all up.

I guess that's what warms me to VDO's film work, well, CI, at least, there is a human side of him that reaches me. One second he can be in your face, the next moment, there is compassion. Maybe not towards the same person, but there is compassion there in that short hour we have with him.

Wow - That's a lot to share. It is so true that the quality of our lives can all come down to how well we can overcome the damage of our parents, but exposure to various traumatic sights and sounds can affect a young imaginative mind no matter who it is that does the exposing. In this case, it just happened to be Moms.

That's terrible to live under such a threat of abandonment as a child. (of course, in my case, the idea of being dropped off somewhere would have been pretty welcome at times... dry.gif )

Ok, ladies and gents, buckle your seatbelts and enjoy the ride. If you have a problem with watching boys kissing boys, don't bother watching this clip, cause he kisses everyone in it. Here we go, enjoy. smile.gif

Thank you vurt, so much... this was very enjoyable. I too must see this movie with Claire Dolan

Your welcome, it's my pleasure to bring everyone the joy of VDO. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I'm gonna...uh...go...ah...have a smoke now. Yeah. Be back in five minutes. Or maybe 5:08.

Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed the clip so much. laugh.gif
Cvl, I think it's a wonderful idea for a thread, and I know your intentions are good. I can go on and on about Goren's wonderful traits/qualities that drew me to the show, and that I find so endearing about him.
I just hope that others don't turn it into what Rowe just deleted not too long ago. You know how things like that happen. Although, I don't see why we can't give it a try. If anyone gets out of line, then we'll get Naydi after them. laugh.gif
Also, I'm sure if the thread is named properly, and your first post explains what you're trying to do with this thread, then I can't see why it wouldn't work out well. Except for some of the newbies lately, (not all, just some) most of the people here are pretty good about following the rules of the board. smile.gif So when will you start it?

Seraphina, you are truly seraphic. I am so impressed with you personally - and I'm also (as always) impressed with the care, the financial resources, the intelligent oversight that European countries devote to their citizens' health of mind and body. The United States is shameful, SHAMEFUL among First World countries in this respect - the only First World country, in fact, that has no national health care, but does have an odious system of health care insurance that would be worthy of a South American junta. I could rant for days about the rotten social services in the US, the horror stories of no safety nets, etc etc, , but moving on....

Cvl - PLEASE start yr thread. I have my answer ready! Pick me! Pick me!

Nobody frickin' cares. Make an announcement about CI, or go back to the "Heroes" board.

(Sorry. Had to get that off my chest. Sincerest apologies to 'skampy, who has a job to do, and Rowe, you can go ahead and punch that Master "delete" key now. Thank you.)

*post just came up on it's own.... erm herm... please ignore the tired yet childishly indignant young black woman behind the curtain*

EDIT: oops - see what happens when you post at 2:39 in the am after working all day? please note that the reference to childish indignance was in relation to my not wanting to go to bed... my agreement with the announcement sentiment, however, I consider to be completely fair and carefully well-reasoned!!!

Well, this is definitely off topic....

We have a critter in the attic. I can hear the dang thing munching away on, I guess, wood! mad.gif We've been putting moth balls up there to get this dang squirrel to move on, but it seems bound and determined to move in! I can't get up into the attic right now because there's a heavy desk that blocks full pull down of the attic door. So, I'm spending time pounding on the ceiling, opening the attic door a crack and spraying room deodorizer up into the attic, slamming the attic door closed. LOL Anything I can think of to stop the tooth of destruction going on up there until we can get up there tonight! I know it's cold out critter, but the attic is freaking off limits! Go build a tree nest like your supposed to! Errr grrr.....

_________

I just watched an Animal Planet (or maybe Discovery?) special with three different people matching wits against encroaching squirrels in various settings. Seriously...had typed out a post sharing that the word squirrel translates in Greek to the phrase shadow tail. Then I realized that no one'd really give a good d'mn. Well, that's about all the good I can share of what was learned from the special; but with a hearty HUZZAH! I wish you good blessings in your doom'...er.... unsure.gif ..Courageous and Sure battle!

Yep.

Should go great....

*cough* huh.gif

they'd probably appreciate some lovely Brazil nuts as a house-warming

EDIT: hmmmm.... that's a lot of "good"s.... apparently the internal thesaurus t'aint workin yet today...

Naydi,

I had a pet squirrel as a kid. It was saved after the tree and nest it was in was felled. All in the nest died but the little guy I took in. He didn't even have his eyes open yet. It was a 24 hour watch for feedings with a baby bottle. smile.gif Nicky (yup that's what I named him.) was a grand creature, incredibly smart. Stayed with me all day either on my shoulder, or when it was time to sleep, he'd curl up in one of my pockets. Loved that little guy. I even learned to speak squirrel! I can still do that. laugh.gif
Maybe I should start screaming a squirrel warning call! That would really freak out the dog! laugh.gif

Love critters but this attic pal has got to go. We have to find a way to inch ourselves over to the corner and block off the end of the gutter, which is how it's getting into the attic. This will be a fun evening. huh.gif Hubby and I crawling around in the insulation, making sure to step on the rafters and not fall thru the ceilings! LOL Oh yeah...looking forward to it big time. NOT!

You'd be surprised. I had that done to me several times as a child, and yet when the Sociable Cervix stepped in during high school and offered to remove me, I declined the opportunity (surprised myself on that one, having silently wished to be elsewhere on a daily basis for years).

Really???? Amazing.... Best brief moment of power before the permanent dynamic shift: Being taken unsuspectingly -you know, a la the dog who's afraid of going to the vet in the cartoons- to the Malden Court House to get them to place me in a home somewhere. Headed back to the household that day with her forging some dysfunctionally twisted 'us against the world' bond with me after the woman (don't know to this day if she was a judge, lawyer, Social Services drone, or what) completely turned the whole thing around and upside down due to her obviously displayed inability to actually listen to her child, or to the woman for that matter... That was a good day.

Oh, that was FUNNY!

As a matter of fact, where's the "ANNOUNCEMENT: KATE AND VINCENT ARE BACK TONIGHT"??? Oh, that's right, they're NOT back tonight. Or next week..........GRRRRR mad.gif

Yep, I'll delete the thread. Eventually. cool.gif
