NBC officially announced that they're dropping Passions to add a fourth hour to Today this fall.
Cancellation rumors have loomed over NBC's Passions for the past few years, but this time it's for real, suds fans.
The sad news was privately broken to the supernatural soap's cast and crew in L.A. yesterday. Reporters got official confirmation from NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly today at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif.
"Passions will go," Reilly said. "Right now, we contractually have the show through June. We are talking to the producers and the cast about extending it for a couple more months to close the gap through August."
Come fall, Passions will go off NBC's airwaves to make room for a fourth hour of Today. Yeah, you read that right — a fourth hour.
Reilly chalked up NBC's decision to the fact that daytime soap operas simply aren't as profitable as they once were. "The daypart has just gotten extremely tough financially," he said. "You know, it was a moneymaker for us for so long, and now the margins are just brutal and that's all the way around. That's not unique to NBC. And unfortunately, we do need to make money on these, and we certainly can't lose money.... The economics just mandate that we do this."
"We are going to be looking very, very seriously at keeping [Passions] alive," the exec insisted. "The fact is, there are loyal viewers of this show who love it and show up every day. And in a perfect world, we'd like to keep the brand alive. There may be another network. You know, I don't think it's a broadcast network, but there may be another cable network that wants to get in business with us and have some sort of on-air presence for the show. We're certainly looking at online options. That audience is very, very faithful in the online world, and it's not inconceivable that we could see a daily episode of Passions online. And I think it would really succeed and draw advertisers."

Well, ok, I'll take my daily episodes online/ But I want them for free. I don't mind the ads if I get it for free.
But once Passions goes off NBC I will not be watching any NBC Daytime at all. On principle.

In the rest of the article I posted (I only posted the part about Passions), it said that Days of Our Lives would only go on through 09. That is when their contract ends, and when it DOES end, they won't be back.

NBC doesn't think we watch soaps anymore.
Apparently they think we like unscripted reality shows and news
Nope. We like our drama!

The question now is how will they end the story lines.
With our luck, we won't like the way they end the stories.
peggo
Jan 20 2007, 06:41 PM
Since they are hoping to be picked up by some other venue they probably will NOT end the storylines.
It would be nice to have a big happily-ever-after episode because soaps never get to do that because they have to go somewhere after that.
Sigh.

Hopefully they will know if they will be picked up or not by some other venue so that they can do the happily-ever-after that all the viewers want.

Jan 21 2007, 08:22 PM
Well, they should know by the summer. If it has to end it should end happily.

I can see them keeping things open ended and using the excues that they are still hoping they will get picked up in some other format.

What are they trying to do? Turn into a 24 hr news station?

We need less people working in the day and more people watching soaps!! Everyone quit your jobs or work night shifts...LOL. Just kidding, I would love to see Passions stay on, even just on the internet. It has a lot of young computer savy viewers, I'm sure it would do well. Then I can watch whenever I want and not have to deal with our tempremental VCR!

The main problem I see with Passions being totally computer based is the cost of production vs potential money to be made. Who know. This could be the wave of the future where lots of TV shows are totally online. Interactive even. But for now...well, I hope they can figure out away. I'm fine with product placement. I even find it amusing when they painstakingly position a product for us to not miss. It suits Passions.

I just thought of something... what are the chances that the writers will bring on Julian and Ivy's unseen daughter before Passions goes off the air?
peggo
Jan 23 2007, 01:06 AM
They gave her a name finally, so maybe she will appear. Pretty? Is that a name?
LWolf
Jan 23 2007, 01:10 AM
I must have missed them giving her a name.
If they are planning to bring her on they need to do it quickly.
peggo
Jan 23 2007, 01:12 AM
They have until September. That's um...about two days in Soap World. Yeah, they'd better hurry.
LWolf
Jan 23 2007, 01:17 AM
While they're at it they should bring back all the characters that have left Harmony or who have "died".
Can you imagine the shock!
peggo
Jan 23 2007, 01:18 AM
Yeah. Blow out all of the budget! Make it a spectacular!
LWolf
Jan 23 2007, 01:21 AM
What have they got to loose it they are ending anyway?
They can bring them all back to really kill Alistair.
Then they can leave it hanging (after the happily-ever-afters that is) with a who really killed him - like Dallas!

hummmm, the person in black, could it
be Pretty, who has taken after her
grandfather, lurking in the shadows??
Now wouldn't that be a Passions way of
introducing her!!!

You've got a point. She could have been jealous of Fance and hated Fancy, like Beth was always jeasous of Sheridan and hated Sheridan.

It could be Beth, she is crazy, in fact
Sheridan reminds me of her with the
way she has been acting...and the person
in black is a small frame.

I think if they really cant keep Passions on air anymore that they should make it into a series of novels. I would not mind reading the book plus corney scenes can be imagined alot better than how they tape them. It would solve their money problem and my need for a dose of passions LOL

I've already written a novel and a half worth of fan fic on Passions Vendetta.
I just started reading Hidden Passions...Tabitha's diary book, but it's not fun and nutty like Passions. I love the outrageous stuff.

I read Tabitha's book a couple of years ago.
You're right it's not nutty like Passions, but it was a quick way to find out about the past without waiting for the writers to tell us.

I'm picking up more of the characters' history...that hasn't been rewritten by now. I just wish it was more wacky. That's what I like about the show.

I think my favorite scene in the book was the one when Tabitha interected with a very young Sheridan in the park.
I could just picture Tabitha in that scene.

The scene wasn't much, but it cements Tabith's feeling toward Sheridan.

why cancel passions? it is a really good show better then "days of our lives" ? "really" i see the show every day even if i am not able to see it at home then i REC it on my DVR, so that i can see what is happen with the show. please please don't take it off the air i love the show. i even show the very first show back in july of 1999. and it really dum to cancel it just because to expan the "today show" to an fouth hour of bla, bla, bla, bla things. so please please keep passions on the air, or if they do cancel the show then give the funs and, the show a happly-ever-after-ending.

That would be cool if the CW network would but Passions. Since they are a new network, they are still looking for shows that will work in their programing.

Don't forget all the baby boomers who are retiring and back to their secret pleasure day time soaps. If they put it on line with a faster pace and fan input - it would be perfect. Passions appeals to multi-generations fanbase.

I love Buffy. It wasn't as good in it's last season, but it was my favourite show at the time. I think Passions might be put in the evening, but that's just based on those other night time soaps, Wicked Wicked Games and Fashion House and the others.

I don't know if the CW website has boards. The few times I've been there they were still lacking things like NBC has, since they are new.
Maybe if the CW does pick up Passions they will add boards.
