Chapter 13

“Wow, I think the whole city was out today,” Theresa commented as they entered the loft, carrying groceries.

“Well it is a beautiful day,” Nick grabbed the bag from her, placing it on the counter. “And in a few months it’ll be so cold outside you can’t even leave your house,” he said, wrapping his arms around her waist.

“Hmmm, how could we pass the time stuck inside all day?” she asked, pretending to be deep in thought.

“Oh I think we can come up with a few ideas,” he smiled playfully, nuzzling her neck as she closed her eyes.

“Mmmmm, winter can’t come soon enough,” she smiled up at him, pecking him gently on the lips.

“Well, we’d better start practicing now….you know…so we’ll be prepared for the wintertime,” he said, kissing her more deeply this time before pulling away slightly. “So about tonight?”

“Huh? What?” she opened her eyes slowly, still dizzy with desire. He couldn’t help but laugh.

“I said,” tucking a stray hair behind her ear, “about tonight. I was thinking, that I’d meet you at the club after I finish some painting. Then we could go to that concert in Central Park with a small picnic.”

“Oh that sounds wonderful,” she gushed, placing some food in the cupboards. “You’ve got a date.” She smiled as he hugged her from behind.

“Mmmm,” he mumbled as he placed kisses on her shoulder, pulling the strap of her white tank down.

“What time is it?” she whispered as she reached up, caressing his cheek, her eyes closed as she relished in his kisses.

“It’s 6:00.” He quickly glanced at the clock before beginning to devour her other shoulder.

“Oh no, I have to go,” she practically jumped, turning around to meet his sultry gaze.

“Where?” he asked, half concerned as he placed kisses on her collarbone.

“To the club…we have to rehearse….some new songs…I’m supposed to…perform tonight…” she forced out through heavy breaths as her desire was taking over her body.

“Oh…you don’t really want to go, do you?” he picked her up effortlessly, sitting her on the countertop as he continued to ravish her with kisses.

“Mmmmm,” she closed her eyes as she delved her fingers through his spiky hair, forgetting what they were talking about.

He slid his hands up her legs, pushing her turquoise skirt up her tan thighs as he caressed them seductively.

“Maybe we should just…stay in tonight?” he mumbled over her lips.

Her eyes shot open at the word ‘tonight,’ pushing him away from her.

“Bad Nick, you almost made me forget that I have to go,” she tilted her head to the side, feigning a dirty look.

“Hey, I can’t help it if I’m so d*mned irresistible,” he said, batting his eyes innocently.

“Yes…you are…” she laughed, grabbing him by his grey t-shirt as she pulled him in for a kiss. Wrapping her legs around his, she pressed him to her tightly as they kissed breathlessly before pushing him away and jumping off the counter.

“Now I’m really late,” she breathed heavily, smoothing down her clothes. She walked towards the bedroom as Nick followed her, letting out a heavy exhale.

“I can help you get undressed-I mean dressed…” he smiled wickedly.

“Oh no you don’t,” she laughed softly, holding up her hand. “I’m going to take my dress to the club with me to get ready.” She picked out a gold beaded one-shoulder dress from the closet with matching heels.

“Oh you’re going to wear that dress I like. I better get there on time, make sure none of those men steal you away from me,” he winked at her.

“You..have nothing to worry about.” She wrapped her free hand around his neck, pulling him down for a kiss. “Mmmm…I’ll see you there….and we’ll finish this later…promise…” She nuzzled his lips before turning to leave.

“I’m going to hold you to that,” he grinned as she waved on her way out. Nick exhaled. ‘I need a cold shower.’

A limousine slowly pulled up the front of the Lava Lounge as the backseat tinted window rolled down.

“You’ve got to be kidding me?” Ethan grumbled outloud as he eyed the club. “Theresa better have a good excuse for being in this dump,” he frowned as he exited the car. “Michael, why don’t you park the car, then you can meet me inside,” he ordered, adjusting his suit.

“Of course sir,” Michael answered, worried what awaited them as he pulled away from the curb.

Ethan cautiously entered the club, surveying his surroundings and the patrons as he scoffed to himself, approaching the bar.

“Excuse me, I’m looking for Th-Serena,” he spit out with disgust.

“Her show’s about to start man, take a seat like all the other guys,” Robert pointed to the tables as he poured drinks for a customer. “Can I get you something to drink?”

“Scotch…neat…”

“Here you go sir…one scotch neat..”

“Thank you,” Ethan answered distracted, placing some cash on the counter as he found an empty table.

*******************

“Serena, you’re on in two minutes.”

“Thanks John,” Theresa smiled over her shoulder, putting her last touch on her makeup. She opened her purse, smiling as she pulled out the picture of her and Nick. She rubbed the necklace he had given her in her hand as she stared down at the picture. ‘Nick,’ she thought warmly to herself as she gazed at him and sighed. She pressed the picture to her heart before returning it to her purse.

She stood up from her vanity as she eyed herself in the mirror. She fluffed her wavy locks, turning from side to side as she checked her dress from all angles. She reached for some perfume and spritzed a quick spray into the air, walking through it.

‘Ok, it’s showtime,’ she smiled at her reflection.

********************

The lights dimmed as the show was about to begin. “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for coming tonight to the Lava Lounge. Let me introduce the sultry songstress of the stage….put your hands together for…..Sssseeerreeeeennnnaaaaaa……….”

The audience cheered as Nick carefully made his way through the club, finding an empty seat at the bar as he placed a bouquet of flowers down beside him. He grinned widely as his eyes locked on Theresa as she took the stage.

Ethan narrowed his eyes on her, noticing how different she looked than usual. ‘What is she doing up there?’ he thought to himself.

The music began to play as Theresa began to sway, closing her eyes as she began to sing, caressing the microphone.

http://www.radioblogclub.com/open/56098/jo...To%20Be%20Wrong

“I've got a right to be wrong
My mistakes will make me strong
I'm stepping out into the great unknown
I'm feeling wings though I've never flown
I've got a mind of my own
I'm flesh and blood to the bone
I'm not made of stone
Got a right to be wrong
So just leave me alone

You're entitled to your opinion
But it's really my decision
I can't turn back I'm on a mission
If you care don't you dare blur my vision
Let me be all that I can be
Don't smother me with negativity
Whatever's out there waiting for me
I'm going to faced it willingly

I've got a right to be wrong
I've been held down to long
I've got to break free
So I can finally breathe
I've got a right to be wrong
Got to sing my own song
I might be singing out of key
But it sure feels good to me
I've got a right to be wrong
So just leave me alone”

“Woooooooooooooooooooooooo” the crowd roared as Theresa bowed slightly. “Thank you, thank you…I’ll be back in five,” she breathed into the mic, giving a sweet smile as she left the stage. Ethan jumped up quickly before the lights turned up, following her into her dressing room. Theresa sat at her vanity, powdering her nose when she heard a knock at the door.

“Sorry, I only have a free minute, but I can meet you after the show,” she tried to say pleasantly as she had numerous times before to male fans.

“Now is that any way to speak to your husband?” Ethan leaned against the doorway, arms crossed over his chest, his blue eyes narrowed.

Theresa spun around on her chair at his words, her eyes widening as she was hit with a memory of their wedding; him in his tux, waiting for her at the altar. Her looking around at all the guests, seeing all the faces that she had forgotten-mamma, Luis, Miguel, Whitney, Paloma….

“Oh my God, Ethan,” she whispered as she stood up, her mind racing a mile a minute.

“Oh so you do remember that you’re my wife. I wasn’t sure since you left me over a week ago,” he spoke with disdain in his voice.

“Oh…my….” she suddenly felt dizzy, lifting her hand to her head as she tried to keep from falling over as Ethan rushed up to her, catching her before falling. He carried her to the small couch behind her vanity, laying her down.

“What happened? Are you ok?”

“I…..I was mugged….” she explained, confusion in her voice as her eyes felt groggy. “A….week ago….I couldn’t remember who I was….til I saw you…just now…then it all came rushing back….” she said, still trying to put together her old memories with her new.

“So you didn’t leave me….?”

“No….I …didn’t…..”

“How have you survived this last week without knowing who you are?”

“Well….I..uh….-.” she started as her eyes darted up to the doorway.

“Hey beautiful! I have a surpr-…Ethan!? What the h*ll are you doing here?” Nick’s eyes grew wide and his smile faded to shock as he saw his older brother hovering over Theresa. “Why do you have your hands all over Serena?” He moved over to them on the couch, pulling Ethan up by his arm.

“Because she’s my wife Fox,” Ethan snapped back, pulling his arm away.

Nick’s mouth fell open in both shock and horror, not even noticing the bouquet falling from his hand. He swallowed hard, trying to force out his words. “Your…what?”

“My wife. What are you doing here?” he spit out. “And why are you bringing my wife flowers?” he asked, eyeing the bouquet on the floor.

Theresa sat up slowly, her dizziness subsiding. “Wait….how do you two know each other?” she looked from one to the other in confusion.

“This is my estranged brother Fox Crane, well Nicholas Foxworth Crane officially. Except he gave up the Crane name, so now I hear it’s just Nick Foxworth, is that correct little brother?” Ethan smirked, crossing his arms over his chest.

Nick opened his mouth to answer when Theresa cut in. “Wait-Nick is your brother?” she looked from one to the other, incredulously.

“He used to be my brother, before he gave it all up to be a struggling artist,” Ethan scoffed.

“The best decision of my life,” Nick shot back with contempt.

“So how do you know my brother?” Ethan eyed Theresa suspiciously.

“I..uh…he..was the one who found me when I was mugged…and he gave me a place to stay,” she finished quickly, looking down.

“Is that so?” Ethan glanced from one to the other. “So out of the goodness of your heart, you gave her a place to stay?”

“Yeah that’s right…some people like to do the right thing…something you know nothing about…” he glared at his brother.

“So you didn’t take advantage of my wife?” Ethan approached him, sticking his chest out defensively.

“Whatever happened between me and Serena is our business,” Nick stood before him, staring him down.

“Her name is Theresa and my wife is my business…” Ethan shoved him.

“That’s it man…” Nick started to shove him back as Theresa jumped to her feet, stepping in between them with her hands up.

“That’s enough! Both of you…stop this!….”

“You’re right Theresa. You’ve been through a terrible ordeal. Your family-your mother, Whitney…we’ve all been worried sick about you. Let’s get you home.” He took off his coat, draping it over her shoulders, purposely ignoring Nick as he turned his back on him.

“Theresa’s not going anywhere with you Ethan…” Nick said grabbing his arm. Ethan turned and swung as Nick ducked, pulling back and knocking him square in the jaw as Ethan hit the floor. Ethan leapt to his feet, charging his brother as they began to wrestle, hitting Nick in the face.

“Stop it!! Stop it now! Both of you!!” Theresa screamed in horror as the two men pummeled each other. Just then Michael ran into the room, surveying the situation in a second before he ran between the two men, separating them.

“That’s enough! That’s…enough…” Michael yelled, pushing the two men off each other.

“Fine….” Ethan said, gently touching his bloody lip.

“Fine…” Nick also answered, running his hand through his hair as his cheek throbbed.

“Theresa tell him that we are going home….” Ethan glared at Nick before looking back at her.

“Ser-Theresa……” Nick spoke, searching her eyes as she looked from one to the other before her, side by side.

Michael stood back, quietly watching his friend’s distraught demeanor. She stared at the ground for a few moments, her mind racing with contradicting feelings and thoughts. Finally she looked up at the two men, the beginning of tears forming in her eyes.

“I….” she looked from one to the other. “I’m…..sorry………..Nick……” she forced out, using all her strength to hold her tears back. “He’s…..my husband……I…” she finally met his gaze, his usually warm brown eyes shaky with despair, and she instinctively reached out her hand to his.

“Theresa we should get back to the mansion…it’s late….” Ethan caught her hand, taking it in his possessively.

“Ahem, I’ll get the car,” Michael spoke somberly as he turned and left the room.

Nick swallowed hard, his desperate gaze never leaving Theresa’s. Ethan pulled Theresa towards the door, beginning to lead her out. Nick reached out, grabbing her free hand from behind.

“Theresa….” Nick whispered, his eyes saying more than his words ever could.

Theresa’s eyes slowly met his as a tear streamed down her face. “I’m so sorry…..” she said softly, a sob in her throat. Nick slowly let his grip fall from her hand, taking a step back as if he were punched in the gut, unable to breath.

Ethan led her out of the room, as Nick stood there for a moment, staring at the empty doorway. He slowly walked over to the couch, slumping down on it as he noticed the flowers on the floor beside his feet. He picked up the bouquet, staring at them for a moment, suddenly reminded of the previous night on the rooftop. He slowly placed them on the couch beside him, his head falling in his hands, staring down at the floor as he was overcome by despair.

************************

“Now that you’re coming home, everything can get back to normal,” Ethan spoke as they both stared out their windows of the limousine.

“Yeah…” Theresa softly answered, wiping a stray tear from her cheek.

“Everyone’s been so worried….I knew there had to be an explanation to your disappearance….I can’t believe you got a job while you lost your memory. And singing in a dingy little club like that.” Ethan laughed to himself.

Theresa just stared out her window, watching as raindrops began to hit her window.

“And dressed like that…..No wife of mine would willingly look like she’s on display,” Ethan scoffed, giving her look a once over. “As soon as we get home, you can change into your real clothes. Oh and tomorrow there’s going to be a dinner party we have to attend at Wallace Miller’s house….” Ethan rambled on as Theresa stared off, the rain beginning to pour down. Lost in her memories. Lost in Nick.

looking forward to the next one... I was expecting Nick to have a little more fight in him when he came face to face with Ethan.. but I think what you did was great... He was trying not to make it harder on Theresa... or to really cause more of a scene than Ethan already had...

Chapter 14

The door to the loft opened to a darkened room, illuminated by flashes of lightening as Nick entered, unaware that he was dripping wet from the walk home as he threw his keys on the counter. He went straight to his cupboard, pulling out a bottle of whiskey and a glass, pouring it as he walked through his apartment. He placed the bottle on the coffee table, walking over to his work area, pulling off his wet t-shirt that clung to his body and threw it aside as he took long gulps, staring at his easel. At her, staring back at him, the painting he was working on before going to the club. ‘Was it all a lie? Wasn’t any of it real?’ he thought to himself, wiping his mouth with his hand holding the glass. ‘How could I have been so wrong? Why didn’t you want me? Why didn’t you love-..’ He was overtaken by anger as he turned and flung his glass at the wall as he knocked over the easel and all his surrounding paint supplies that came crashing to the floor.

He picked up the bottle of whiskey and began chugging it from the bottle, praying that’d he pass out soon and somehow erase this night from his memory.

RING RING!

Theresa looked over at the phone on her nightstand, having been wide awake for hours. She finally reached over and answered.

“Good morning Mrs. Crane, it is 8 am. The forecast for today is warm and breezy,” the maid announced cheerfully on the line.

“Thank you Maggie.” Theresa sat up slowly, looking around her room as she sighed. She had been home for two days now, and she still didn’t feel normal there. She stood up, wrapping herself in her matching pale pink silk robe as she stared down at her empty bed. ‘Nothing’s changed,’ she thought to herself as she picked up her phone and dialed.

“Hey Whit….Yeah it’s good to talk to you too…can you come over before breakfast this morning…I need to talk…..ok…..ok thanks….see you soon….” She hung up the phone and went into her bathroom, splashing cold water on her face and brushing her teeth as she tried to remember what Ethan had told her to do for him that day. She couldn’t even think straight as she sat at her vanity, pulling her hair up effortlessly in a tight chignon, stopping when she caught her reflection in the mirror. With her hair pulled up, her eyes moved down to her neck, her hand subconsciously clutching his necklace. Nick’s necklace. She was hit by a flood of memories from their first encounter to their last as a knock at the door startled her from her thoughts.

“Mrs. Crane, Mrs. Harris-Crane is downstairs in the foyer.”

“Ask her to meet me in the garden,” Theresa forced out.

“Of course Mrs. Crane,” the maid answered, disappearing down the hallway.

Theresa stood up, taking a deep breath as she went into her walk-in closet, reaching for a sensible grey pantsuit as she began to get undressed.

******************************

“So….how are you?” Whitney asked her friend as they walked along the garden path.

“Honestly-numb……it’s something about being here. It doesn’t feel the same anymore. I feel like I’m living someone else’s life. And I don’t know if that’s going to go away. Will I ever feel normal again?”

“I’m sure you will honey. You’ve just been through so much. It’s to be expected that you would feel so confused. Just give it some time. You’ll be your old self soon,” Whitney smiled, trying to cheer up her friend.

“But I don’t know if I want this life anymore. Or….this marriage…” she finished softly as they came to a stone bench.

“Theresa honey….you’ve been in love with Ethan practically your whole life,” Whitney said, sitting beside her friend.

“I know. I did love him my whole life. But now…” Theresa cut off, looking out into the rows of rose bushes that spread out before them.

“Now you think you have feelings for his brother?” Whitney narrowed her eyes in judgement.

Theresa nodded, her gaze never leaving the flowers before her as she brushed a stray tear from her cheek. As she stared at all the multi-colored rose bushes, her mind wandered to a few nights ago, dizzy on her dressing room couch. Remembering Nick drop the bouquet of flowers he had brought for her in shock. She pulled a rose off a bush beside her, pulling the petals off, one by one as she let them fall from her hand to the ground. She watched them fall at her feet, suddenly taken back to the rooftop, following the red rose petals that led her to Nick. Nick. She dropped the last petal, taking a deep breath as she looked up.

“Theresa…..I don’t know what to say…I can tell you’re obviously torn….But I also know you can’t throw away seven years of marriage for a fling…”

Theresa turned to face Whitney, narrowing her eyes as she was stung by her words.

“It wasn’t…..a fling….” Theresa spit out, frustrated.

“I’m sorry Theresa, but you need to look at the big picture here. You always act first then think. I’m just trying to help you,” Whitney said, crossing her arms.

“I didn’t this time did I? I came home. I did what I was supposed to do…” She turned again, looking off into the distance.

“Yes….you did….and I know you Theresa. You’re going to forget all about your…brother-in-law… and remember your deep love for Ethan that you’ve carried with you since you were a little girl. Remember, playing dress-up at my house, and you always wanted to play the bride. Putting a white pillowcase over your hair for your veil.”

“Simone was my flower girl,” Theresa reminisced, thinking back to those times.

“Yes…and I was your maid of honor. And Noah, or any other boy around at the time had to pretend to be Ethan for you.”

Theresa just nodded, remembering it all. “See honey….that’s what you’ve always wanted. And you have it…Don’t throw it away…..”

Theresa was quiet for a few minutes, rubbing her necklace between her fingers as she was thinking about Whitney’s advice. She stood up finally, turning to her friend.

“Thank you Whitney, for being here for me,” she smiled faintly.

“Of course honey. I’m always here for you. All I want is for you to be happy. And you won’t be happy without Ethan,” she said, hugging her friend.

“I have to go. I have a lot of errands to do today,” Theresa said, pulling away from her friend’s embrace.

“Ok. Well then, call me later if you need me. Or else I’ll see you in a few days at the Charity Ball.”

“Oh it’s that time of year already? When is it exactly?”

“It’s on the first of the month. Easy to remember,” she smiled.

“The first of the month?” Theresa answered, frowning. ‘That’s the same night as Nick’s showing at the gallery,’ she thought to herself. She took a deep breath. ‘I have to forget about him. I have to…’

“Yeah, why? Is everything ok?”

“Hmm…oh yeah everything’s fine. I’ll talk to you soon. Bye Whit.”

“Bye honey,” Whitney waved as Theresa watched her walk off, pulling out her cell phone.

“Hi, Marci. It’s Theresa Crane. I thought I’d come by and see the children today. Actually I’m the one who can use some cheering up. Ok…thanks…I’ll see you in a bit..Bye..” she closed her phone, smoothing her hair against the breeze as she walked back to the mansion.

KNOCK! KNOCK!

“Nick! Nick are you in there?!” Dylan yelled from outside the front door, banging to see if his friend was inside. “I’m coming in!” he yelled, using his spare key.

He opened the door slowly, the apartment darkened by the pulled down shades, blocking out the intruding sunlight. His eyes widened as he surveyed the room; all his paint supplies knocked over on the floor, clothes and takeout food strewn haphazardly, and a few opened bottles of liquor. His gaze finally found his friend, seemingly passed out on his couch. Dylan approached his friend questioningly, nudging him with his leg to wake him. Nick didn’t wake, just mumbled as he rubbed his face on the cushion. ‘Yup, he’s passed out,’ Dylan realized, knowing he’d have to be more obvious.

“Hey Nick! Nick man! Wake up! It’s me Dylan!” He yelled, slapping Nick on his back as he turned over in surprise.

“Why are you yelling?” Nick rubbed his eyes, annoyed.

“I’ve been calling you for two days now…why haven’t you answered any of my messages? And what is going on here?” Dylan pointed his hand at the surrounding mess.

“I didn’t want to see anyone,” Nick sat up, eyes heavy as he reached for a half empty bottle of vodka on the table. Dylan grabbed it before he could, pulling it away.

“Whoa, hey man, what is going on with you? Since when do you have these bingefests?”

“Where are my cigarettes?” Nick began sifting through piles of newspapers on his coffee table, ignoring Dylan’s questioning.

“Nick? What’s the problem?”

Nick continued in search of his cigarettes, throwing the pieces of newspapers on the floor when his hand stopped. His eyes froze for a moment when he saw something unexpected. He swallowed hard, focusing his eyes as he pushed a newspaper over, lifting up a piece of sketch paper carefully.

“You want to know the problem?” He put the sketch down on the table where Dylan could see it, as he continued. “Serena-excuse me, Theresa, left me….and not only did she leave me, but she left me for my brother….her husband…”

Dylan stood in shock, unable to speak as Nick moved on the couch, discovering his cigarettes and lighter in between the couch cushions. He stood up and lit a cigarette, exhaling deeply as he paced the room.

“Nick-I…I don’t know what to say…” Dylan looked up at his friend, searching for the right words.

“I do….I need a drink….” Nick walked over to the fridge, pulling out a beer.

“Nick wait….you need to get out of here. You’ve obviously been holed up here for two days…”

“I don’t want to go anywhere,” Nick frowned, popping his beer open.

“Well I’m not taking no for an answer. Let’s go,” he said, grabbing the beer from his hand and placing it down on the counter. “Just for a little while.”

“Man-..”

“I said now!” Dylan ordered, looking his friend square in the eyes.

Nick let out a sigh. “Fine…” He looked around, grabbing a black t-shirt that was hanging off a chair. He went to the kitchen sink, splashing some water on his face to look somewhat presentable to the outside world. “I’m ready,” he said through a worn out expression on his face. “Wait-..” he walked over and picked up his cigarettes. “Ok now I’m ready.”

“Let’s go….” Dylan held the door open, praying he’d be able to get his friend through this.

_______________________________________________________

“Ok now isn’t this better? A little caffeine in your system, fresh air, sunlight, and your old pal Dylan,” he tried to crack a joke, unsuccessful as Nick frowned at him from across the table.

“There’s too many people around,” Nick sunk in his chair, blowing on his coffee as they sat at an outside café.

“Yeah well, we’re in New York. People are wall to wall here.”

“Not in my apartment,” he pouted, sipping his hot coffee carefully.

“Not yet. I just want you to talk to me. Tell me everything.”

“I told you everything. Boy falls for girl. Girl seems to fall for boy. Girl remembers she’s married to boy’s brother. Girl leaves boy and goes back to their mansion on the hill,” he grumbled, never taking his eyes off his coffee.

“I’m really sorry this is happening to you man. You just need to push through til the gallery showing in a few days. Then you can sell all your paintings and you won’t be reminded of her anymore.”

“I don’t need the paintings for that. All I have to do is close my eyes…”he said somberly, looking away.

“It’s just so unbelievable. I mean, what are the odds?”

“It’s not odds. It’s just me. I’ve always been the spare. Second best in the eyes of loved ones. Why should it change now? Just because it’s the first time I’ve ever been in lo-..” He cut himself off, turning his gaze to the passing cars on the street.

“You know, even if you don’t say it out loud, doesn’t make your feelings any less real,” Dylan looked sincerely at his friend, trying to catch his gaze.

Nick swallowed hard, trying to focus on the tourists passing by.

“So you don’t think she loves you?”

“I don’t know what to think….” he looked over to his friend with bloodshot eyes. “Even if she does feel something for me, it’s obviously not more than she feels for my brother-and that’s all that matters isn’t it?” He looked at Dylan matter-of-factly, lighting a cigarette. He tapped his finger nervously as he exhaled a puff of smoke deeply. “She doesn’t want me…..” he said softly.

Chapter 15

“I don’t know about this man, I’m having second thoughts,” Nick grabbed Dylan’s arm outside Hennessey’s, one of their neighborhood hangouts.

“I know you don’t feel much like celebrating, but tomorrow is a big night for you. You deserve this Nick. You deserve to have all your friends around you, supporting your huge accomplishment. Just for a little while.” Dylan looked sincerely at his friend’s pained eyes.

“Alright,” Nick sighed. “Just for a little while.”

“Great…let’s go,” he said, patting his friend on the back.

The pair made their way through the crowded bar, coming upon a table of their good friends who smiled at their arrival.

“Hey guys,” Nick greeted faintly.

“Hey Nick, Dylan..grab a seat…we ordered a few pitchers of beer,” their friend Mark informed them.

“Thanks man,” Dylan took a seat, pouring a glass for him and Nick.

The group was quiet for a few moments, noticing Nick’s dismal demeanor as he stared down at his beer.

“So, the joint is really busy tonight huh?” Dylan commented, trying to break the silence in the otherwise noisy bar.

“Yeah, I guess they all wanted to help Nick celebrate his success too,” Susan joked, trying to make him smile.

“Yeah..” they all laughed, trying to raise his spirits.

“So Nick…are you ready for tomorrow?” John asked.

”Hmm..oh almost..” he answered, distracted, meeting his friend’s gaze. “I never finished my last painting of the collection..I haven’t been able to bring myself to do it yet..” he cut off, looking away as he took another gulp of his beer.

“Hey, why don’t we orders some food-maybe some nachos..wings…who do you say guys?” Dylan interjected.

“I’m not hungry…” Nick looked over, his brown eyes vacant. He stood up slowly, Dylan instinctively jumping to his feet to stop his friend.

“Nick don’t leave..”

“I’m just going to get another pitcher of beer…I’ll stay for one more drink..” He turned his attention from his friend to the group. “Thanks guys, for..being here for me..” he nodded, walking towards the bar.

He leaned over the bar, waiting to get a bartender’s attention. “Hi, can I get another pitchr of beer?”

“Sure handsome,” the bartender smiled as she began to fill the pitcher.

Nick casually looked around the bar, tapping his fingers as his gaze froze near the entrance. “Serena..” he whispered to himself, his anxious brown eyes fixated on the petite brunette who stood with her back to him. “She’s here..” he quickly began to maneuver through the crowd, pushing his way through the patrons.

“Serena!” he called out, trying to get her attention as she turned to leave the bar. “Serena wait!”

“Nick!” Dylan yelled as he saw his friend heading for the exit.

‘She didn’t see me. I have to catch up to her,’ Nick thought to himself as he frantically ran out the door.

“Serena stop! It’s me Nick!” he yelled, catching up to her, grabbing her by the arm as she whirled around in surprise.

“Serena!”

“Hey what the h*ll do you think you’re doing?” The petite woman angrily pulled her arm out of his grip.

The excitement in his brown eyes quickly changed to anguish as he realized his mistake, taking a step back.

“I….I’m so sorry…I thought…you were someone else..sorry..” he said, holding his hands up, looking around confused.

The woman just scoffed and turned on her heel, walking away.

“Nick! Nick what happened?” Dylan ran up to him, getting his attention.

Nick turned, looking up at his friend. “I..I thought I saw her…” he said softly, longing in his voice. “I thought she came back to me…” he looked away, running his fingers through his hair.

“Nicky…” Dylan sighed. “Let’s go back inside.” He reached his hand out as Nick took a step back.

“No…I just want to go home.”

“Are you sure that’s what you want?” he asked, concerned.

“Yeah..I’m sure..I need to be alone…Will you tell everyone for me?” He nodded his head towards the bar, stuffing his hands in his jeans.

“Sure man. Sure…I’ll call you tomorrow. Try to get some sleep…”

“Thanks…Night Dylan…” He turned and began to walk home.

“Night Nick..” Dylan watched after his friend til he turned the corner, sighing as he entered the bar.

“I’ll love you forever, I’ll like you for always, as long as I’m living, my baby you’ll be…” Theresa smiled, closing the book contently as the little girl wiggled in her lap.

“That’s my favorite book Theresa,” the little girl jumped out of her lap, grinning excitedly.

“That’s mine too Ashley,” she said, stroking her red curls.

“I’m gonna ask the nurse for a snack..” she said, picking up her book.

“Ok sweety, go feed your tummy.” She had come here every day since she returned, the one thing she looked forward to. Theresa watched the little girl toddle off, standing up from her chair as she looked around at all the children engaged in activities. ‘The brave sweethearts…how can anyone so precious have terminal illnesses?’ She sighed, her attention drawn to a new boy who sat at a table coloring. She walked over to him, taking a seat beside him.

“Hi sweetheart…what are you drawing?” she asked gently.

“My family..do you like it?” he asked, holding it up for her.

“Oh that’s beautiful..”

“I can draw a picture of you too.”

“I would love that! My name’s Theresa. What’s your name sweetheart?” Theresa smiled as he adjusted his small glasses.

“My name’s Nicholas,” he answered as he grabbed a fresh sheet of paper.

“Nicholas?” Theresa asked in surprise.

“Yes. That’s my name.”

She stared at the fair-haired boy for a moment as he drew with deep concentration.

“You know what?” she leaned down, whispering.

“What?” He looked up interested.

“I know someone named Nicholas who loves to draw too,” she said, smiling.

“You do?” he asked, fascinated.

“Yes, I do…He paints beautiful pictures too…” She answered, subconsciously rubbing her necklace in her hand.

“Did he paint you?”

“Once he drew a beautiful picture of me.”

“Cool! Mine is going to be beautiful too!”

The little boy began to draw, holding his tongue between his lips in concentration. As he worked, Theresa walked over the window, clutching her necklace as she remembered that first night together when she had awoken to find the drawing he had sketched while she slept. She only teased him a little about it because she was really touched by how he saw her. And even without the drawing, the way his eyes sparkled when he looked at her. She sighed, realizing she’d never see his warm brown eyes again. She wiped a tear from her eye as she felt a tug at her skirt.

“Theresa! Theresa! I’m all done!” Nicholas announced excitedly.

“Oh let me see sweetheart,” she bent down, taking the picture in her hand. “It’s beautiful. You are a wonderful artist Nicholas,” she smiled faintly, sniffling slightly.

“Why are you crying? Are you sad?” he looked at her with wonder.

“Oh,” she said, dabbing her eye from the moisture. “I’m just a little sad. I miss my friend Nicholas.”

“Maybe you can go see your friend tomorrow. Then you won’t be sad anymore,” he said, looking at her with wide eyes.

Theresa couldn’t help but smile at the little boy trying to console her. “Thank you for my picture,” she said, trying to change the subject. “Now I don’t feel sad anymore,” she said as she wiped her eyes.

“You’re welcome,” he smiled at his achievement, giving her a hug. Theresa closed her eyes, filled with love for another Nicholas in her life.

“Theresa! Theresa where are you?!” Nick called out as he frantically entered the Crane livingroom.

“Fox, what are you doing here?” Julian looked up at his estranged son as he drank his evening brandy.

“I’m looking for Theresa. I’m here to get her back.” Nick answered shortly, his eyes darting around.

“Now son, you know she’s married to your brother.”

“I don’t care. I love her, and she loves me. I know it! Now where is she?”

“Son it’s late. I’m sure she’s in bed by now,” Julian answered in his usual slow slur of words.

“Then I’ll wake her. We need to talk,” he turned, racing up the stairs.

“No son, wait-..” Julian called after. ‘She’s not alone,’ he thought to himself. ‘Poor *******.’

“Theresa! Where are you? It’s me Nick!” He called out, opening door after door down the maze of hallways as he came to the last one. ‘She must be in here.’ He thought to himself, anxiously opening the door.

“Ther-…” He cut off, his eyes widening at the sight before him.

“Oh Ethan,” Theresa moaned in pleasure as Ethan moved against her body, devouring her with kisses.

“Theresa…Theresa you feel so good….” Ethan said between heavy breaths.

“Ethan…I love you…only you..forever..” she called out, writhing in ecstasy.

Nick couldn’t breathe. He felt like he was suffocating as he ran out the door, lost in the maze of hallways as he tried to get away from there. “No Theresa….no…” he forced out softly as he strained to breath, leaning against a wall, tugging at his collar.

“It can’t be true Theresa…it can’t….you love me Theresa…you love me….not him…not him…..Theresa….”

He began to toss and turn, shooting up in bed. “Theresa!” he called out, his brown eyes wide as he looked around his darkened loft. He slowly untangled himself from his white sheets, sliding out of bed as he adjusted his black pajama pants. He picked up his white button down shirt that was strewn over a chair, holding it to his nose as he breathed in her scent that still lingered on it. He closed his eyes for a moment, then laid it back down, walking over to his easel. He saw the tattered painting that he had knocked over, placing it back on the easel as he looked at it. At her face, looking back at him through intoxicating eyes. His fingers gently grazed over her lips, remembering how they felt on his own. ‘Just one more…then I have to let you go….I guess you were never mine to begin with….’ He thought to himself, remembering his dream. He laid the picture down, placing a fresh canvas on his easel and began to paint.

Theresa returned to the mansion that evening, just as the sun began to set. As she hung up her coat in the foyer, she heard muffled voices coming from the living room. She began to walk in when she heard them mention Nick, causing her to stop in her tracks. She stepped to the side, listening intently.

“So let me get this straight. Theresa met Fox outside some dingy nightclub in New York City? And he took her in? Not knowing who she was?” Ivy asked skeptically.

“That’s right mother. She was there on one of her shopping trips and got mugged, losing her memory. And it’s just like Fox to swoop in and take advantage of an innocent girl like Theresa,” Ethan said smugly, handing his father a brandy from the bar.

“It sounds like he’s his father’s son,” Ivy added, glaring at Julian.

“My poor Theresita. I hope he didn’t mistreat her,” Pilar frowned, subconsciously twisting a handkerchief in her hands.

“Well now, how do we know that’s all that happened between them afterall?” Julian smirked, taking a swig of brandy.

“What do you mean father?” Ethan asked, narrowing his eyes.

“What I mean dear naïve boy is maybe they’ve been carrying on an affair for weeks or months now under your nose. And just now got caught,” he chuckled, taking another swig.

“Father that’s preposterous!” Ethan scoffed in disbelief.

“Really Julian, my Theresita is not like that. She’s a good, honest girl who loves your son.”

“Which son is that?” Julian laughed again as he poured his third drink for the night.

“Julian, that’s enough. They have not been having an affair. You’re just trying to stir the pot,” Ivy spat, glaring at he despicable husband.

“Mother’s right father. Theresa loves me and only me. That’s how it’s been her whole life. There’s no way she would carry on an affair with another man, let alone a loser like Fox.”

“Sorry son, I was just stating a possible scenario.” Julian slurred.

“I don’t know why we’re talking about this. There’s no comparison between Fox and I. We are nothing alike, thank God,” Ethan added, sipping his brandy.

‘You’re right about that,’ Theresa thought to herself.

“How could he turn out the way he has? He’s a disgrace to the family,” Ivy pouted, playing with her pearls in her hand.

“If I never see him again, it’ll be too soon,” Ethan spat bitterly.

“That’s enough!” Theresa exclaimed, surprising everyone as she entered the room.

“Theresita you’re home.”

“Yes mamma, I’m home. And I’m stunned by what you’re all saying about Nick.”

“Theresa, you don’t know our son like we do,” Ivy interjected.

“I know your son more than you think Ivy. And in that time, I was able to see what you all seemed to disregard; a man who is giving, sincere, hardworking, and a gentleman. And in my book, that doesn’t match up with being a disgrace to the family,” she spat out angrily.

“Theresa, he doesn’t need you to defend him,” Ethan glared.

“Well he’s not here to stand up for himself, seeing as you all drove him away!”

“Theresita, you don’t need to get so angry,” Pilar said, standing up.

“I’m sorry mamma. But yes, I do. He does not deserve this. Not from any of you,” she said, glaring from one to the other. “I’m going for a walk.” Theresa turned and left, slamming the door behind her.

“Well well, maybe my little theory about there being more than meet’s the eye was right,” Julian smirked.

“Shut up Julian,” Ivy frowned as Ethan just rolled his eyes, gulping down his brandy.

“Oh God, I don’t know what to do anymore…” Theresa stopped on the wharf, tears streaming down her face as she stared out into the dark sea before her. “Should I throw away what’s left of my marriage and follow my heart?”

“Theresa.”

“Michael,” she cried out, falling into his arms as she sobbed. He held her tightly stroking her hair as she began to pull herself together. “Michael, what are you doing out here?” she asked, looking up at him with watery eyes.

“I followed you from the mansion. I saw you leave and wanted to make sure you were ok. It’s a good thing I did. You’re shaking. Where’s your coat? It’s cold out tonight,” he said, wrapping his coat over her shoulders.
“I ran out so quickly. I forgot it.”

“What happened Theresa?”

“I came home from visiting with the children, to hear the whole family berating Nick, and it just broke my heart. They don’t know him at all. All they care about is that he doesn’t fit their mold of a Crane son.”

“That’s terrible. From what you told me, he seems like a real standup guy.”

“He is….Nick is…wonderful…” she whispered, pulling away as she looked off into the water.

“That’s why you’re crying isn’t it? Because you’ve fallen for him.”

Theresa nodded, wiping a tear from her cheek.

“What are you going to do?” he asked quietly.

“I don’t know,” she sighed. “I’m so torn Michael. Do I walk away from my marriage and be with a wonderful man, or do I try to make my marriage work, trying to rekindle what Ethan and I used to have?”

“That’s the key word there-used to have….do you think you can get it back? And do you think you can take the chance of losing Nick in the process?” he asked, rubbing her back comfortingly.

“That’s what I’m so torn about.”

“You have a big decision to make then. Just don’t take too long. You don’t want to lose your chance with Nick if that’s what you decide.”

Theresa nodded. “Thank you for being here for me Michael,” she smiled up at him with distressed eyes.

“I’ll always be here for you Theresa. No matter what decision you make,” he pulled her to him, holding her tight. ‘I just hope you make the right choice,’ he thought to himself.
