This just in:

"With fall TV schedules looming, several ratings-strapped series are waiting to hear their fate. The networks are still two months away from announcing their fall schedules, but that doesn't mean we can't speculate on the future of your favorite--well, statistically speaking, they might actually be your least favorite--shows.

NBC The network will likely bring back 30 Rock and Friday Night Lights, which earn strong critical praise but weak ratings. NBC execs simply love Lights, and programming VP Mitch Metcalf describes Rock as "a show, like The Office, that can benefit from patience." As for Studio 60, its upscale audience means nothing if they don't watch this season's remaining six episodes, slated to air--when was that, Mitch? "We'll make a judgment on that later.""

This is the only part of that article that scares me, they still don't know when to bring it back and how much later **** you NBC exec?! >.<

Interesting, they haven't made the decision yet to air the last episodes? That can't be good news for the show. May is just around the corner now.
willowandme
Well if they would just put them on the freakin' air I would watch them! Over and over I am sure.

To all the execs (if they happen to read this!) bring Studio Sixty back! One of the shows I enjoyed and watched religiously! Bring Studio 60 back! Give it some time to develop, and it'll be a strong, strong show!
HerdGrad
With TBD sucking air through a straw I hope they bring S60 back soon, since it really does rely on how good or bad, TBD is doing. They better get some ad time when they bring S60 back too >.<

Man, I can't believe the unprofessionalism and shadiness of these people. You really wonder how they got to these positions in life acting this way. It's not like they were elected or anything. It's simple: make a clear decision as to whether it's coming back or not, and if you can't do that, TELL US WHY. They're acting as if No Body Cares about this show, but there's much evidence otherwise, including this very board on THEIR OWN WEBSITE!

And if the deciding factor on FNL and 30 Rock was because critics liked it but the reaction for S60 was mixed, that complete B.S. I'd believe it's more because they're NBCUniversal productions and S60 is WB.

"...means nothing if they don't watch the season's remaining six episodes..."

To NBC (not that any of them will likely read this, but)

Well, you know, we can only watch them if you put them on the dang air!

And you know, second in a time slot isn't so bad, especially for NBC. I still find it very hard to understand why you can't decide what to do with the shows.

If you really lack confidence in them because (gasp) they finished second in a time slot when their replacement is finishing third, then air them during non-sweeps (but promote them, and differently, and see if they can surprise you).

If you have confidence in them, air them during sweeps (with promotion, of course). And if you have the confidence to air them during sweeps, then you should have the confidence to renew the show if its sweeps audience meets your expectations, of regaining/retaining the audience it had before "The Friday Night Slaughter's" unpromoted season-to-that-point low.

But, I guarantee that if you don't air them, no one will watch them. (until the DVD anyway)

Actually, it isn't really.

If one takes the ratings as not good enough to sustain the show (which I don't concede, because TBD's tanking suggests it's a tough spot, and NBC would do well to keep its shows that can finish second in tough time slots, as it has many that can't)...but if one accepts that, then the business reason to keep a show with too-low ratings on the air is prestige.

NBC gains more prestige from a show the critics love than one about which reaction is mixed.

One of my early posts on this board was that S60 needed ratings good enough for NBC to be renewed, as quality shows only benefit a network financially in non-ratings ways if they're recognized as such.

My argument for why NBC should renew the show is that especially when considering the demographics and also when considering the proof of it being a hard slot (and NBC's general ratings), the ratings are good enough that it should be renewed.

I also think that on a relative basis, it's more prestigious than most of NBC's shows; but it isn't going to be as prestigious as shows the critics universally love.

And regardless, set a dang date for return and the showing of this season's ep's, promote them, and stick to it!

If you build it, they will come.

If they'd put the programs on the air, WE'D WATCH THEM!

Seems pretty simple to me. I've got all the previous ones TiVo'ed...need something new! This show is fantastic! So much better than 90% of the crap on the tube.
DictionaryBob
well said...

they keep sayind how the show's return is indefinet, and it's future will depend on how it does when it finally returns, but how can they tell if they won't put them on???

or at least tell us when it's coming back, and why it's on such an extended hiatus any ways.
OOyl
First of all, I like your name and your avatar, Dictionary Bob (Cal's my fave guy on the show). I think when they put them back on, we need to do three things:
One, watch them.
Two, generate a buncha buzz on the message board (yes, I believe that some midlevel management person monitors the boards as an indicator of whether the show is talked about and whether it's talked about by computer people.)
Three, we're going to need to buy those episodes on iTunes. It shows us to be a mighty market force that stretches beyond our numbers.

BTW... I would like to encourage all my fellow boardsters to discourage trolls and naysayers. They're just picking scabs and we all know that leads to infection. The best way to deal with these folks is to NOT RESPOND in any way, shape or form. These kinds of scum tend to disappear if they're not getting any attention at all.

In the meantime, I've been ill lately and it does my heart good to communicate with y'all.

Great advice Olive

I have to say, this is extremely sad news. This show is one of the few smart, witty programs out there and it would be a terrible shame to see a show with such promise and potential get thrown out so early in the game. I really hope the executives at nbc know what a gem they have here. I just hope they let us finish the season and get some kind of closure even if they don't decide to re-up the script for next season.

Welcome Tigerseye! Love the screen name. Please sign our petition. The link is below my signature.

Also there is an E! Online contest to "Save One Show" at the link below. It's in it's 6th or 7th year and in all but one the winner has been pickd up for another season. Please vote for the show you want to save. Hope it's Studio 60. wink.gif

I would at least try to DVR the show to watch it later. It's not always very successful for me and often times I have to watch them online here (which, by the way, says "Check back soon!" SKETCHY). I hate that Neilsen ratings are the staple of t.v. ratings. I've just learned in psychology about the follies of doing surveys when the people surveyed don't represent a balanced demographic. I say screw the ratings. Balance what is on the air, meaning GET RID OF ALL THE COP SHOWS AND GLORIFIED TALENT SHOWS and put something worthwhile on the air! Geez.

Thanks... I've thought long and hard about my user name, and Dictionary Bob just came to my mind. It was part of an anogram I used to remember imdb.com as a middle schooler.

Why do people call you olive?

I know the question wasn't directed to me, but the answer is Olive Oyl from Popeye
OOyl
You're the first person who asked! I use Olive Oyl as my screen name whenever I can. First of all, I kinda look like her... I'm skinny and dark-haired. A bunch of my friends started calling me that a while back when I was married to a man who had served in the Navy (a sailor-man, you see). And I once won first prize at a costume contest for coming as Olive Oyl.
That being said, however... my son's name is not Swee'pea, and I dumped the sailor.

And in other news ----

U of O Ducks
have made the Elite Eight!

I Agree- put them on the air instead of re-runs!!! Even if it is on in the middle of the night- we can Tivo! Would they really be worth less than infomercials?? This is the second show that NBC has cancelled with out warning that I had started watching and taping (Kidnapped) So frustruating! Is Deal or No Deal that good, people??
baseballjohn
NBC WTF!!! S60 has the same vibe to be a West Wing. And that show had a great 7 year run. Put S60 back on the air and renew it for its next season.
OOyl
I saw some geek critic on tvguide channel who was critiquing Studio60 and who said that Aaron Sorkin's style of dialogue worked on The West Wing because people there tend to talk like that and that it didn't work in Studio60 or in Sports Night because people there didn't talk like that.
My reaction was that I didn't really care if people really talked liked that, it was funny, snappy dialogue and it entertained me. Also, I couldn't help wondering who the f--- this geek was that he thinks he knows how people talk in the White House. I mean, wouldn't that depend on who was speaking? (As if everyone in the White House spoke the same way.) Wouldn't it also depend on who the President was? I mean, I'm willing to bet that the Clinton White House staff, in general, spoke differently than the good ol' boys from Texas do.
