Full Version: S60 has a worldwide audience......
NBC > NBC Extras > NBC Vault > Primetime Vault > Studio 60

A friend of mine put me onto S60......and I loved it so much I told all my friends about it.....and they're telling all their friends.

And all of us in Great Britain are kinda ****** that S60 has been taken off the air.

Bring it back. And then sell it to a British network so my technophobic parents who don't own a PC can see it as well.
OOyl
What would be really cool is if GB would pick it up and produce it. I don't think NBC's too keen on the notion.
raf1swoop
The last time a British network picked up a US idea was "The Muppet show" back in the '70s.

And in this case, the show would have to be renamed cos we don't have a sunset strip......and "Pinewood Studios, somewhere in London" doesn't quite have the same ring.
S.R.Hadden
It'd be really cool if people who wanted these episodes bought them from itunes instead of downloading a truly great show which is the product of hard work of hundreds of people for free from a deservedly illegal file sharing program.

Lars was right.
raf1swoop
Buy it?!

It's a TV show that can (sorry, wrong tense. *Could*) be downloaded and watched for free from this very website.

The fact that it's not available on this website anymore means people have to resort to bit torrent until NBC wises up and sells it to the international market.
S.R.Hadden
Or that same person could do the legal, moral and honorable thing by purchasing the content from an authorized vendor like Itunes.

I have absolutely no scruples preventing me from trolling a thread about illegally downloading media content.
raf1swoop
And another thing.

Whinge whinge bloody whinge. I jump on here to give you guys support in your quest for getting S60 back on the air and some numpty comes out with a wise arse comment about getting it for free.

Sod ya.

Bloody yanks.
OOyl
Oh I love all those colorful phrases!
There is a point to be had, however.
Artists deserve to be duly paid for their work just like carpenters, plumbers, and taxi drivers.
S.R.Hadden
I like heavy metal. The heavier the better. In any event, not so many people like what I do. I heard this story once about this guitarist in this popular and well established Death Metal band who, due to people downloading his music, had to resort to delivering pizzas to support his family.

Downloading also does wonderful things like, shrinking record sales figures and forcing bands who are on the cusp of success to find new record deals because the album didn't sell as many copies as the company which produced it needs to sell in order to afford to fund that said contract.

Pizza, the guy is one of the better guitarists out there, probably has been that way since he was a teenager and thusly never learned to do anything else, and he's delivering pizza.

I hope his kids like the extra cheese. I sure do.

The moral here is:

1) Tip your delivery person and or server.

2) Think about what Lars said.

3) Don't steal anything.

Don't even get me going, I know a much worse story if ya'd like to hear it. Trust me, ya wouldn't.

Chap -- it's only $2 on iTunes. Surely you can afford $2. Especially for something you really like.
raf1swoop
Do you pay to watch NBC then?

No you don't. You watch advertisements in between shows. The advertisers pay.

We pay to watch British networks. All of em. We don't have a choice. It's called a TV licence and everyone has to have one or you get fined up to a £1000 ($2000 more or less) for owning a TV without a licence. AND we still have to put up with adverts. And that's not including PPView channels and cable TV.

The point here is not that OMG! someone is using an ILLEGAL file sharing program to watch S60!!!! It's that elsewhere in the world (yep, thats right, there is actually a world outside the USA) people are hearing about and wanting to watch S60. A market exists. And if NBC want a piece of that market then they've gotta supply the product to it.

ie, there's yet another reason for NBC to continue making it.

You got to watch S60 for free. So did I. Big deal.

And ask yourself this.......if someone told you about a show that was kinda cool but you'd have to pay $x for every episode would you bother to pay out for the first one and see if you liked it enough to pay for the rest? Seriously? Without bit torrent the international market that's keen for S60 wouldn't exist.

Now take the bloody hint and jump onto the "Hey NBC, look, they want it in England!" point and drop the "you didn't pay for it" rubbish. Jeez.
S.R.Hadden
Do you, say, ever happen to download anything else? Ya know, besides the superior medical system available in your country, and aside from all the biodiesel pumping stations ya'll seem to have, and no, I'm not talking about the parlimentary system that we liberals in The USA could learn a thing or two from either.
I'm talking about music, or software, basic intellectual property, download much of that mate?
jfrancis
I fully support copyright/intellectual property protection.

However, in this specific case I've got to side with Swoop. Anything that gets the word out is a positive right now. When a product is struggling, the smart seller lowers the price, if that seller believes in their prduct. I've little doubt that Sorkin believes in his work; it's almost certainly WB refusing to allow all the shows to be put up on "Rewind."

Swoop, if you can muster up a few bucks for international postage, you might drop a letter, in support of the show, to the addresses you'll find in this thread: http://boards.nbc.com/nbc/index.php?showtopic=734546 You don't have to word it in such a way as to admit to legal wrongdoing, but you can mention seeing the show, liking it, and hearing a positive reaction from other friends who've also seen it.

Although it sounds odd, and feels much more so to me, I gotta agree with the libertarian. All in all I'm glad you like show on the other side of the pond. Pizza Deliverers be danged.
raf1swoop
hur hur hur.

I love the method of interrogation Hadden. Real subtle.

In answer to your question, I like CD's. I like having the inserts which tell me the words so I can sing along (badly). I like being able to select a CD from my rack and stick it on. I like having guests thumbing through my collection going "ooo put this on!" occasionally. You can't do that with MP3s. So no, I don't tend to download MP3s unless it's something very specific and unobtainable elsewhere. For example, I downloaded a very old 1940's song for my ex-girlfriends fathers funeral a few years back cos it was needed in a hurry.

As for films, again, I don't bother unless it's something I can't buy. I prefer to experience the film in the cinema with popcorn anyway, watching The Emperor and Mace Windu battle away just isn't the same unless you and your best mate are sat in the front row grinning like school boys. It's just not the same, even on TV....although I did buy the DVDs of all 6 star wars......um.....for my 5 year old lad, not for myself you understand. Ok, thats a lie, I watch em just as much as he does.

TV shows.....are different. If I miss something I wanted to watch then I download it and watch it. I use bit torrent like TV on demand. And frankly I see nothing wrong with that. If it turns out to be something I'd like to watch again and again then I'll buy the DVD box set, for example, I'm the proud owner of every season of DS9.

Is the S60 box set in British stores? Think it may ever be.....?

Personally, I hope so. And I hope it turns out to be a 24 DVD set like Friends was. (note: figure 24 picked out of the air cos I can't be arsed to call my mate who's got em all up and ask him to count em.)
OOyl
Hey, I'm not trying to sow discord. I see your point about how I got to see it for free. And when NBC starts airing new episodes again, we'll see it again for free (well... not really free - the price we pay is that we have to watch commercials). And hey, we know there's a world outside the US.. ****, most of us are Monty Python and Blackadder fans. We got those shows via PBS, which is supported by private donations and some tax dollars.
No, I probably wouldn't pay to see a show I hadn't grown attached to. However, I would pay $2 to see Studio 60.
We who have been posting on this message board for a long time know that there are fans in England, Ireland, Israel, and a few other places, and yes, you're valuable additions to the "look how many fans there are" argument.
We really are on the same side. I'm sorry if I didn't come off as being on your side.
raf1swoop
Actually OOyl, that rant I had earlier was directed at Hadden, not you. Your reply about the $2 itunes was posted while I was in mid type.

I must agree with Swoop here.

I watch S60 on peekvid (more now since NBC took the episodes down). I don't have iTunes installed on my computer because I find it annoying and I prefer to not use it. I use Ruckus to download music- which is legal (and free for college students) and they don't have S60 available.

Also, I hope that those of you who are opposed to these free downloads don't use YouTube for anything other than watching some home videos, because it's the same concept.

I personally think it's pretty awesome that the show has a fanbase that is this loyal and is spreading rapidly. i think that was the point of the post.

Actually, CBS got smart about YouTube. They have an agreement and they send clips from various shows to YouTube all the time. If NBC was smart, they would too. It's free publicity. ABC also sends some stuff to YouTube. About 6 months ago Jeff Zucker (head of NBC) was quoted as saying he "didn't get" YouTube. Well, Jeff... it shows. Jeff Zucker's on my list of least-competent executives (somewhere a little below Bush & Cheney).

In defence of the guy iTunes doesn't actually allow downloading of studio 60 from outside the US, that doesn't mean there aren't ways round it though, lets just say he's not the only *ahem* Brit here.

That being said, in response to the original stamement I totally agree, 24 is on here 2 days after it airs in the US, and I personally find it slightly annoying, nay, somewhat insulting in the 21st century, and the other answer is Channel 4 from June.

The other point would be that it wouldn't be the first time that SKY had done a deal with NBC over funding of one of their shows, if memory serves SKY pretty much bankrolled BSG when they ran out of cash in season 1, that's why it aired in the UK before it aired on SCI-FI in the US.

I doubt that Channel 4 would do the same though.
Iliketothink
Thanks amaroto for the tip on Ruckus. My son is attending college in the fall and this will come in handy for him. Anything I need to know about the program?
Suncho
I'm pretty sure you can only buy Studio 60 from iTunes if you live in the USA. Everyone else has to pirate it.
Ouki
Well, theyre is actually a lot of foreigners who watch the show thanks to torrent.

For instance, I'm french, and S60 is one of the show i enjoy the most.
Why do i download?
First, i always thought that entertainment should be universal, i hate waiting. If a show goes on the air in january in the US, it won't be on my TV before 12 to 18 months!
Then i hate translations. I really do. I can't watch something that was made in english in french. Even subtitles make me sick.
I'm a big fan of the US TV, you have so much choice! I watch S60, but i also watch 24, 30 Rock, SNL, How I Met your mother and some others....

I only download TV shows... I don't dl music or other stuff like that, because i can pay them online (iTunes user). And i think that if it was possible for me to pay 3 or 5$ for each episode, i would do it. But i can't. My IP is french, and so does my credit card ; and iTunes won't let me download anything from the US Store.

It makes me sad i have to download illegaly a show that i love so much :/
willowandme
Well, whether it's illegal or not, I think it's great we have audiences in other countries who want it bad enough to find it that way.

Well, the only thing that kinda stinks about Ruckus is that you can't put the music on iTunes which means that you can't put the music on an iPod. I have a Creative MP3 player and i can put the music on that. I think it's only iPods that don't work with the program. Go to www.ruckus.com - anyone that has a university email address can sign up and they just ask what year you graduate and it's all totally free and they have pretty sweet selection of music.

Also, about YouTube and other networks posting clips: I did know that David Letterman had clips on the site and a few other CBS programs, but I don't think that those clips are meant to be used for people to use and make video montages. And ABC and CBS post those vids from the station. YouTube usually removes things posted from these networks that aren't from the network - especially award show clips.

I feel the same! (only in russian wink.gif )
You simply have to listen to the best dialoge on tv in the language it was written.

hey, i read somewhere that Channel 4 have already brought Studio 60 and is showing it in June for everyone else in England who hasn't seen it yet! biggrin.gif hopefully it will do well over here!

And perhaps we will have a weird role reversal, where the Americans have to download the show illegally because it gets picked up in England for the second season (and beyond).

Personally, as long as there are more episodes, I'll figure out how to get to see them.
