Shun!!!
I love Andy, warts and all. Michael sometimes can be too much of a softie, but you can rely on Andy for comedy. Here's my short list of why I love Andy:
- He went to Cornell - ever heard of it?
- He sang in a group called Here's Come Treble!
- He lives to frolf!
- He likes to get good face-time with the boss.
- He plays the banjo
- He can sing in a sexy, high falsetto voice.
- He knows pig latin, really well.
- He can record and layer his voice
- He knows the lyrics to Indigo Girls and that song "Love Me, Love Me
- He's a yes-man
- He knows how to deal with the grumpies.
- He can't control what you do, but he can control what he does
- He has a twin size blow-up mattress

An-drew does for me exactly what I believe he was intended to - gets under my skin and irritates me. And I kinda like him for it in a cring-y, shuddering sort of way.
Hate? That's pretty strong. He has been and will be an important part of the show.

Agreed. He pretty much stole all the scenes he was in with his over the top obnoxious behavior. Of course he has been wrong... but then again don't we love Michael, Dwight, and Creed for all the wrong things they do and their glaring character "issues"?
I for one am I'm looking forward to "Drew" devolving back into the old Andy in short order.

He's the only one who has gotten under Michael's skin aside from Toby. I loved his "I'm sorry if I annoyed you with my friendship" line just before going off the deep end and punching a hole in the wall.

I think Andy is one of the best characters on the show. I was really happy when he came back. And I mean, how could you not be crying when he punched a hole in the wall, and made that sound? That was probably the best Andy part! I think Andy is a nice addition to the show, and makes it even weirder, which is why I love it so much!

I love love love Andy --- and here comes an explanation why:
When we were introduced to Andy this season, my husband and I almost had mutual heart attacks because he is SOOO much like someone we know . . . named Andy. This Andy is always over-compensating for his own short comings by doing everything he can to make them cool. He wasn't cool enough to really "make it" with the cool people he knew, so he worked really hard at being the coolest of the dorks he knew. OK, get ready, cause I am about to break your brain with coincidences:
- he worked at the mall ("used to work at Abercrombie")
- he never drank before college, but drank all thru college because he discovered that was what the "cool kids" did ( "I was drunk the whole time")
- he is terrible at reading people ("Big Tuna is a super ambitious guy")
- he is always cheering for the team whether he really cares or not ("Stamford, CT! and Cornell/Hofstra - slaughter!")
- he is ALWAYS singing ( "in your head . . .")
- he had really low self esteem ("I'm not falling in a chocolate river")
- he has been known to punch holes in walls and doors ("Its not freakin' funny")
- he has anger issues ("the grumpies")
And most eerily of all - this Andy is in a band, a dorky band of which he was the lead singer -- and on the van that they used to carry around their equipment was a lisence plate entitled Here Comes Trouble.
And hence, my "inside" screen name.
I find Andy so true to life that he is above reproach.
Now on to the reasons why he's awesome:
Yes, he's irritating, but so is Michael, Dwight, Kevin, Angela, Creed, Kelly . . . and we love them all, so just wait til he grows on you.
Ed Helms is fantastic! That little head shake and body posture that he does when he is singing the oopma loompa song "no he was not, he was a total douche" is PERFECT comedy! That is still my ALL TIME favorite line from the show because it is inherently so funny -- thanks to Ed's performance.
Plus, Andy adds a great dynamic to the office staff -- a great double for Dwight -- he is someone for Jim and Pam to unite against, but at the same time, acts as Dwight's nemesis. This is endless fodder for great scenes and hilarious comedy. You can't tell me Shun/Re-Shun/Un-shun was not the highlight of the last episode.
In short, (I mean, long) Andy rocks!

I love Andy and I love Drew. It is a two-for-one, schizophrenic comedy team. After all, with only 21.47 minutes per episode, they have to do this sort of condensing to get it all to fit.

Now that Andy/Drew is back... I think he should buddy up with Toby.
It would make sense that someone that just completed an anger management program would be friends with the soft-spoken guy that just sits in the background.
Also it would totally get up Michael's nose to have someone from his team like Toby more than him. Esp if that someone used to worshop Michael. I imagine he'd go nuts trying to win Andy/Drew back.
...Which would drive Dwight insane

Andy to me is the male version of Kelly. Very into themselves, unsure of themselves, says what is on their mind out loud w/o thinking, wants a significant other and most times clueless but a few fleeting times of being catty and it works out for them

I can't believe I never saw this thread before!!! I'm so happy I found it!

Okay, my hatred for Andy

is caused mostly by my love for Dwangela. It's tough because everytime he does something funny on the show I laugh, and then I feel like I've betrayed Dwangela somehow

. I know it's kind of childish or immature or something to hate a character for this reason, but I can't help it. I suddenly have a complete understanding of many Jammers' hatred of Roy and Karen. However, I think that once Andy and Angela are broken up, I will be able to enjoy the Andy character (to some extent).
I started to hate Andy in Travelling Salesmen/The Return b/c of how he was just such a sneaking, snivelling sycophantic suck up. He has no problem doing things that are not right just so he can get what he wants. Even when he tried to impress Angela, he
stole the ice sculpture and then lied about it. Somehow, I think that if Angela knew that Andy had sinned in order to get that thing, then she would not have been so glad to recieve it.
I also hate him b/c he is so clueless! He doesn't even love Angela (if you want to see what I mean, check out Dwangel Central in a few days) and he asked her to marry him! It just messed everything up for everyone! Angela is now stuck in a loveless engagement, as is Andy, and Dwight is crushed, and Andy even messed it up for Jim and Pam!
Of course, my hate for Andy augmented once he started to date Angela, and everytime I see (or even think about) them together, I honestly feel a little sick to my stomach.
Okay, that felt good. I really needed to get that off my chest.

You know, I've always wondered what would happen if those two were to hook-up. Unlikely, but I think the results would be hilarious. They have a cool couple name if nothing else (Kandy).
Why don't I like Andy? DMonkey's response basically hit the nail on the head. He's a self-centric jerk who isn't afraid to cut throats to get where he needs to go, same as Ryan (not a big fan of the Temp anymore, either). He's annoying, and I think as far as foils to Jim/suck ups to Michael goes, Dwight has him beat by a long shot.
I'm not afraid to laugh at his funny moments, though. He is just a character after all. But like someone else said, if I had to deal with someone like that in real life, I'd have to throw myself infront of a train.

Wow. I cant believe Andy hasnt been defended yet. What is the world coming to. Andy is absolutely hilarious! I cant believe everyone is dissing him, I'm in total shock. Some of you take the show, and the 'couples' way too seriously! Its not supposed to be lovey dovey with a fairy tale wedding, its not a chick flick. Its supposed to be snarky, ironic, hilarious, ridiculous.. Thats what makes Andy such a great character! He is soooo ridiculously hilariously retarded it works incredibly well! How could you not love him after the 'Take a chance on me' song? Come on. Admit you love him. You know you want to.

To all Andy haters...you need awesome lessons. I also think Andy and Kelly would be an interesting and ultimately happy couple. Everybody that hates Andy for stepping in the middle of Dwangela...way off base Andy doesn't even know about Dwangela blame Dwight's insensitivity and Angela's stubbornness for that one. Although I think Angela and Dwight are the more suitable couple I still like Andy better and feel sorry for him and his inevitable heartbreak.
But to paraphrase someone else the main reason I watch this show and love it so much is for it's comedic value however the relationships end up is not going to make me love or hate it. It's the distinctive style of comedy(with poignant dramatic touches that don't just center around relationships) that make me watch every week(and re-watch in between). The only relationship that might remotely move me to any extreme reaction would be Jim and Pam. What I mean to say is if they didn't end up together when all is said and done it might leave a bad taste in my mouth. But sometimes the guy doesn't get the girl or vice versa...happens in real life all the time. So on another level even if Jim and Pam did end up not together it would still be compelling to watch. And ultimately that's what makes this show great that it is realistic...and sometimes realism isn't pretty and/or doesn't have a Hollywood ending.
Sorry I guess I kind of strayed off topic. Point is Andy is a compelling character to watch...personally to me the most of the three in the triangle. But even with that said I don't hate Dwight or Angela they are compelling as well. The only character that I have strong negative feelings for is Ryan and yet I'm still oddly interested in him as a character.
