Well as we all know Mothers Day 2007 is coming up this Sunday!

Mother's Day is a time of commemoration and celebration for Mom. It is a time of breakfast in bed, family gatherings, and crayon scribbled "I Love You"s.

I found a soppy poem and a few funny cartoons for Mothers Day, and I'll share more throughout the week.

Grab a kleenex!!!

M - O - T - H - E - R
"M" is for the million things she gave me,
"O" means only that she's growing old,
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
"H" is for her heart of purest gold;
"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
"R" means right, and right she'll always be,
Put them all together, they spell
"MOTHER,"
A word that means the world to me.

Howard Johnson (c. 1915)

I wonder what Pam is doing with her mom... rolleyes.gif

I'm giving my mom some free Mary Kay product. And a nice big hug. And an e-card. Maybe something else. I haven't decided.

About 25 years ago, there was this phone contest where you called the number every day and they gave you the letter and the word. Like the first day was "M" and the description and you had to write it down. On the last day, the "R" day, they gave you a different phone number to call. The first 10 callers who could give the whole "Mother" poem with descriptions would win a dozen roses for their mother. I didn't win, and I was heartbroken because I didn't buy mom anything that year because I was so sure I was going to get the free roses!

I'm gonna go try to find gifts for the moms today. Why didn't I get them anything in England? Grrr! rolleyes.gif I'm thinking pretty notecards for my mom (she ALWAYS wants those), but I'm totally blanking on MIL. Any ideas?

We're driving an hour to take my mom out for lunch. She wanted us to spend money on a nice meal instead of a gift this year.

That reminds me, I better make a reservation!

my mother is away(thank god) so she gets the gift of free time for herself but I'm going to go buy her some See's chocolates for when she gets back.

I've bought 2 things for my mom while I've been here on my trip. I got her a new Vera Bradley purse (which she really does need- her other one isn't looking so good laugh.gif ) and new place mats- which are really cute. As soon as I get home from my trip tomorrow I'll probably be busy cleaning the whole house since we are having a mother's day thing at our house.

Believe it or not, my mom wants to go to the casino and gamble all day.

Mother's Day is tough:

A. My husband doesn't "get" the concept, so I'll get bupkis from him (of course, he was raised by wolves, so I have to forgive him this sort of little social faux pas).

B. My mother (who will be staying with my daughter on Mother's Day, as I have to be in Toronto on business all of next week) hates just about everything I've ever given her. So, I try to buy to whatever she's interested in now. Her current boyfriend is into gardening, which means she is (even if only nominally), so I bought her those cool oil garden lanterns from Pier 1. When HE thinks they're okay, she'll appreciate them.

C. My MIL. I don't even know what to say. And her birthday follows just 4 days after. I guess it's time for a basket of baked goods. They'll give her plenty to complain about, which is like another present for her, so at least I know I'm giving her that pleasure.

D. My step-MIL. She's awesome, but I struggle with gifts for her. She is into very sleek, pared-down surroundings, and literally doesn't like to look at or even know about clutter. Normally, my daughter and I just take her out for a nice lunch, but I'm heading out of town... Stumped.

E. My step-mother (#2). This lady, even though she isn't married to my dad anymore, is actually pretty cool (divorcing that clod really did a lot for her personality). Weird, arty earrings that she'll never wear (I can't even approach affording the only designers she "patronizes" - with her, it just has to be the thought that counts).

F. Current step-mother (#3 or #4 - can't actually remember). Nothing. Absolutely nothing. If she can't pretend to remember my daughter and husband's names, she doesn't count as family.

G. Grandmother. I'm so sad about this - all she wants is time, and I won't be here (I'm the only family she has around now). She loves butterflies, though, so I'm buying her a butterfly bush, with a "will plant this for you when I get back" card.

Yeah. Mother's Day. Biggest buying day of the year for me. Bleh.

You are not his mother. Duh. wink.gif That was the excuse I got - but only on my first Mother's Day. It never happened again.

Wow WOS! What a complicated day for you - I'm glad you've got an action plan! (I just hope you get something for YOUR special day!)

My mother put in a request for an MP3 player from her three kids (for Mother's Day and her Birthday which is in July ) and she wants it filled with songs of our choosing. We're actually going to do it and it should be fun. But she's going to have so much music, she's not going to know what to do with herself. We're also going to put pictures on it, so it's a bonus she's not expecting.

But I bet you anything my husband won't think about Mother's Day for me until Sunday morning and then he'll run to the grocery store and buy some flowers (and maybe a card). It will be interesting, we'll see.

Madre is getting an iPod Nano, this year.

I tried to gauge her interest last year but she insisted she didn't need it....Towards the end of last year, she bought some kinda mp3 player that she couldn't figure out and eventually lost the charger for it..so an iPod it is! tongue.gif

My sister in law is prego (WOO HOO!) and I haven't yet figured out what to get her...perhaps some cutesy maternity outfit.

Nope - I'm a Colorado girl, born and raised... (but thanks for saying I remind you of a close friend... it's much better than reminding someone of Imelda Marcos). And you did a great job of changing your Mother's Day destiny. Any pointers for someone who is still failing at it?

I probably will get something very cute and hand-drawn from my girl (last year, it was a toilet-paper roll puppet - I still have it). That's what truly counts for me.

Also, I've started to look at the complaint phone calls from my MIL as a gift. She's so very crazy, that I can classify it as entertainment.

Now, here's my MD wish - I hope that all you great mothers here (who offer me so much support, I can only imagine how amazing you are with your kids and families!) get the recognition you all so richly deserve!

No, no pointers, since it was merely a detour and not a change in destiny (we aren't married anymore).

I'm excited for Mother's Day! Aside from all the mom-praise and gift I bought for my dear mummy:

My boyfriend is on a religious mission in Moscow, RUSSIA, and he gets to call home on Mother's Day! I haven't seen/talked to him for three months (except in written letters) so... Yeah. Pretty excited.

I'm giving my mom some of the better pieces I did for art class, like a still life of a pitcher, bowl, and apple that I did in pencil; and my "reproduction" of Van Gogh's The Bedroom. smile.gif

I sent my mom flowers, which she will love. She likes feminine things. No mil or grandmas, just my mom.

As for myself, I don't really enjoy Mother's Day and I don't know why. I usually end up being annoyed with everything. So this year I have to work harder at enjoying whatever they do for me so that no one will feel bad. It's one of those things I should probably talk to a professional about, but I personally hate Mother's Day.

I am not sure on MIL either, I have to buy and send hers out today so it makes it there in time. I am kind of clueless as well for my own. I havent sent her updated pictures of the kids so I may do that and have the kids create homemade cards. My MIL is big on flowers, but I hate the prices of sending flowers, it is a complete rip-off, IMO. I could buy a whole garden or perennials for the price of a cut & sent bouquet.
I'm going to go think while I shovel out the boys room. I'm sure i'll get an epipherery there tongue.gif

Anything homemade is usually appreciated so the kids making the cards is a great idea. Now getting them to do it on the other hand.....

Slots - nickle. Hey, if my mom wants to gamble all day - it's fine with me... I'll just stick $100 in with her card and she can gamble it away if she wants.

I'm sending my Mom flowers for Mother's Day. They will be arranged in a keepsake box as she just loves collectible things. We have just my Mom as my MIL passed away last year. A special neighbor gets a Mother's Day gift from us, usually something for her garden.

As of last night, hallmark.com offered free shipping and an added gift to all Mother's Day orders. Plus, you get a free Hallmark card for Mom. wink.gif win-win-win
Cate the Great
I think people who buy cards are lazy. That is my opinion, please don't be offended. Here is a poem I wrote you can use to make your own. This is my gift to you, don't have to credit.

I went to Hallmark, but it made me sad,
when I saw all the greeting cards that they had.
All wish a happy holiday, nothing more,
as if making a card were that much of a chore.
But a moment it takes to show you care,
I guess most people don't have time to spare.
So I sat down and wrote this card.
(It really wasn't all that hard.)
I just wanted a special way to say
HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

With a slight adjustment to the 8th line, you can make it your own. You're welcome. *heart*

So FTD delivered my Mom's flowers today, despite my order for delivery Saturday. rolleyes.gif Her birthday is a week after Mother's Day, so I'm sending a combo. present. She loves Fenton glass, so it includes a couple of books on that, and she's always wanted to try Bare Minerals, so I got her a starter kit. So mommies were invited to a special program at the preschool this afternoon. The kids stood up on stage in two neat lines and sang their hearts out. Now my daughter had been telling me about this "secret" song they were going to sing at the end, but she couldn't tell me the words because it was a surprise. Anyway it was a song all about mothers, and there wasn't a dry eye in the house, including mine. At the end of the song my daughter turned to me and said "that's the one Mommy!" wub.gif Then each kid took his or her mommy by the hand and led them to a reception with punch, and cookies, and we got a personally decorated flower pot with a nice plant, and a hand-made card. Sorry, OH! Has he left already?

Since my birthday is always so close to (and sometimes on) Mother's Day, sometimes things get combined. I'm usually pretty cool with that.

Today I got my mom a gift card to Bath and Body Works (and of course I bought myself some things wink.gif ) I'll probably get her a live plant, too.

The only person I've ever received a Mother's Day gift from is my mother inlaw. I know. Kind of strange.

My sister and I painted card for my mom and her mom (my french grandma) and I drew two more for my dad's mom (my newfoundland grandma) and my aunt, who is like my second mom. I can't wait to see their faces, I love making people happy! It's to bad I can't see my newfy grandma and my aunt's reactions 'cause they live in newfoundland but I know they'll be happily surprised by the cards. I love the water colour I did for my mom, to looks like Pam art or something!

Anyways hope everyone gets something nice for their mom's. Remember, you don't always have to spend big $, mom's love things made by their kids more than anything!

I'll be happy if I get my favorite Chinese food tomorrow.
Too Late Kev
On my Mother's Day, I always get to give up my mothering duties for the day. I don't have to do a darn thing if I don't want to. So, I'm planning on catching up with my fanfic, sleeping late (I'm already staying up late...), and just dealing with the kids when I want to. Or if blood's drawn. Or if my husband is about to pull an Andy Bernard because he's about to lose his freakin' mind.

I saw my Mom tonight and gave her a picture frame with one of my kids in it - it's a brand new school pic, and a beautiful frame. And I'll call her tomorrow!
SharpSchruter23
I made my mom a corsage to wear to church. Not only so that she can be one of those mothers that are beaming because their kids/husband bought them one, but also so that she can brag that her wonderful, thoughful, and talented daughter actually MADE her her corsage.
I'm also buying flowering plants to hang from the front porch, she loves that.

I want to wish all the moms out there a Happy Mother's Day! smile.gif

I am thinking of my mom today. She was always there for me and was my biggest supporter in every decision I made. She died July 2005 of a very aggressive lung cancer. It was unbelievably tough, as I was in the middle of my divorce and one month away from sending my firstborn off to college in VA. Her last words to me before she lost consciousness were an apology to me for not being able to do something that she had promised me. But that was my mom, always putting others first.

It is much easier now, but I still have moments where I want to pick up the phone and call her and, I can't. I miss her, but I know she would not want me to live with sadness, so anyway.

I had a nice time at my brother's house yesterday. We celebrated my nephews' combined b-days. I got a nice plant from my dad and a Yankee candle from my sister-in-law. I'm going out to eat later with my daughter. The weather today in MA is beautiful, so I'm looking foward to it.

Happy Mom's Day to all!! wub.gif

I've been out a couple of times today but I think I'm in for the night now - gotta rest up before the really big day smile.gif

I bought 8 ten-pound bags of potting soil for my flower boxes (but they're a lot heavier than ten pounds when some of them are soaking wet and I'm carrying them up three flights of stairs). Thank goodness I discovered that I only needed four of them before I got them all upstairs.

My balcony is going to look purdy.

I also drove the route to my new job. On a quiet Sunday afternoon it was 30 minutes from parking lot to parking lot. I'm wondering if an hour is going to be long enough some mornings.

In a minute, I'm going to sit back with a glass of wine. And, if I'm really lucky, I'll get Chinese food for dinner tongue.gif

Hope you all are having a great day. wub.gif

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there.

The dog's been puking since last night and we just got back from the emergency vet. They are keeping him overnight again, giving and IV and doing tests. $$$$$ I'm worried.

I got flowers and a balloon from my granddaughter, a poem from my daughter, and that's about all.

My daughter's best friend from school needed to go shopping for her mom for Mother's day, so I took them to the Mall yesterday. The friend's mom has cancer, and her daughter wanted to buy her some new scarves for her head because she lost her hair. So we found some, and some cute pajamas. It was so sweet, and heartbreaking. She looked at me and said I don't have enough money for this. I told her to pick out whatever she thought her mom would like and not worry about what it cost. She started crying. We were all crying in the Mall, but after it was over, we felt better and got smoothies and went to the pet store to look at the puppies. Oh ....it was quite a day.

Somebody smack me if I start complaining about anything.

I know he's strong & all but still, when Sunday arrives I know he's going to feel a lot of pain, sadness & emptiness on the inside. I just hope he'll finally be able to communicate, because I can tell that he's been holding it all in.

On a lighter note, I'm composing a mixed CD with a mothers day theme for my mom. The album isn't complete yet but here's what I have so far:

I Will Take Care Of You: Amy Sky
The Perfect Fan: Backstreet Boys
Wind Beneath My Wings: Bette Middler
A Song For Mama: Boyz 2 Men
Because You Loved Me: Celine Dion
I Want A Mom That Will Last Forever: Cyndi Lauper
Thank You, Mom: Good Charlotte
Mama: Il Divo
I'll Always Love My Mama: The Intruders
Somebody's Hero: Jamie O'Nell
Mother's Day Song: Jim Brickman
You Raise Me Up: Josh Groban
Hey Mama: Kanye West
In My Daughters Eyes: Martina McBride
God Must Have...: *NSYNC
Mama: Spice Girls

If anyone has any song suggestions, please let me know as I'll be very grateful. I also plan to make her a card & present her with a single pink rose. As for plans, I assume the family & I will take her out for dinner & bunch. It should hopefully be a good day smile.gif.

Yeah, this will be my husband's first without his mom. He hasn't mentioned anything, but I'll check in with him on Sunday.

As for me, no plans. I'm a little surprised I didn't get any cards--usually I get godmother cards, but nothing yet. I know that Tom bought me cards from Jay and according to Jay, he "did not make me a flowerpot in school". laugh.gif So we'll see how it goes. We're keeping it all low-key so as not to stress the kid--he will see MOY tomorrow and give her his projects and stuff, so we'll see how it goes. And we're going to my mom's Friday night for dinner--I sent flowers to her job that she should get tomorrow.

^ Aww. I hope you mom feels better!

As for my weekend- we are spending Saturday at a communion party in Penn., so I expect to get home late, and have my mom sleep in on Sunday, so I can surprise her with a breakfast in bed.

Then when she goes to church, My sister and I will probably cook something deliscious so she gets the day off. Then when my dad gets home and the dinner is done, we'll give her our cards, flowers and what other gifts we have and then sit down and have dinner with the whole family.
She'll enjoy that alot more than eating out, and we love to cook so its all good wink.gif
