Are live auditions still out there? They haven't come to Denver like they did last season and our group's been waiting for them to come. I'm assuming that auditions are over, seeing as I can't find anything on them, but I just wanted to really make sure. We don't want to miss an oppertunity like this... rolleyes.gif

Auditions for this seasons are over. They did continue to ask for mail-ins and even over the internet submitals as late as April. Have to see how the season goes to see if there is a next time.

I've got a question!?!, The Audition Process

I'm wondering how the whole audition process works. Now when the 20,000 or so people are standing outside in line, I assume they eventually go inside and register somehow. I also assume that everyone isn't make it to the big stage to perform in front of the judges. Do they go and audition in front of a minor show employee, and they decide whether they want to put them on the stage? Also, how many people out of the thousands actually make it to the stage? I know they only show a handful of the acts on television, so that makes me wonder how many their actually are. It seems like quite a few based on the brief shots of the holding room the give us. That's just a few questions that I have. Is there anybody on here that has been through the whole audition run around and could tell me a little about it? Thanks.

First you attend an open call...they will advertise about them...you audition for staff from the program..they take yer video back to Hollywood and a larger group of staffers review them there....then they will notify you if chosen for the next step...also you may submit thru uploading a video at the NBC web site when advertised...

My understanding is that they flew some 200 acts to Hollywood for the second round of auditions (in Hollywood in front of judges). The show has done a good job of mixing video with the first round of auditions (in respective cities). It gives the appearance that the auditions on stage are happening in the cities, but they are not. Also, some people were invited to Hollywood based solely on video submissions.

Kevin and Musicalhands are both right, but I will elaborate.

Here is the basic rundown of this season's audition process, based on conversations with contestants, auditioners and staff.

Open calls were held back in September/October in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Boston and Branson. Contestants would wait in line, American Idol style, and then audition in front of some low level producers. Many were chosen for extensive filmed interviews afterwards. Footage from those auditions was then passed on to the executive producers who would determine who would be on the show.

By the way, the show is seriously inflating the number of acts that actually auditioned at this stage. Turnout was so bad, some people didn't even have to wait in line to get auditioned. The poor turnout ultimately resulted in the cancellation of an open call (Atlanta I think). The good part (I think) is that the producers were able to give a lot of time to auditioners, allowing them to perform more of their acts than the normal 90 seconds. And I say "I think" because many of these performers that were given additional time or given a secondary interview after their audition were mistakenly lead to believe that their chances of getting on the show were high. Producers and even the Hoff (who was at the Los Angeles casting call) were guilty of telling people that they had all but made it onto the show (only to find out months later that they had not).

Participants were given a hotline number to call that would keep people updated on the progress of the casting process. This was a total joke as the message on the hotline went months without change, leaving most auditioners in the dark about whether or not they would be chosen or even when they would know. Since only people that made it on the show were contacted directly, the people that did not make it were left wondering if casting was finished or if anyone had been called at all. This was completely unprofessional IMO, because it limited performers options. I know at least a few groups turned down contracts and other opportunities so they would not ruin their chances of being on the show.

At that point, the show was slated to air in January, but somewhere along the line that all got changed (obviously). Months went by without auditioners being informed whether or not they made it on the show. After much digging and talking to a talent producer and people at the AGT offices (which are the basically on loan from American Idol - same phone number even) I discovered that the executive producers had returned to England and that the show was on hiatus. All the while, the message on the hotline had not changed. To the best of my knowledge, people didn't start getting callbacks until January or later (most of the people I spoke with did not make it, so I could be wrong here).

Once Jerry Springer was added to the show they reopened casting and scheduled an additional open call in Dallas. The Dallas audition was presumably to get footage of Jerry with contestants. Some of the people that auditioned in other cities or that sent in videos were contacted and asked to come to Dallas to audition again.

In late April the acts that had made it were flown to hollywood to perform in front of the judges (as musicalhands stated). Some acts that did not even audition were also flown in to be on the show. Some were acts from last season, while others were seen by the producers elsewhere (TV, live eventsm etc.).

After everyone performed (I presume over several days) the auditions and footage from the initial casting calls were piecemealed together to form what we are watching now. I know a lot of what we have watched so far did not happen where they say it did. As stated previously, all the aired auditions were actually filmed in Hollywood, but even some of the casting call footage is being misrepresented. For example, all the fanfare with Hasselhoff that "made him late" on last week's episode took place in Los Angeles, not Dallas (or wherever they were claiming to be at the time), and it was all staged. I found it kind of humorous that Jerry (who was not even signed on to the show yet) magically appeared outside the Chicago auditions this week with a cheering crowd behind him.

So, that's basically the rundown as I know it. Anyone that would like to fill in the blanks, elaborate or correct errors, please feel free.

What?? You don't mean to say they're...they're...misrepresenting something about the show??

.snicker perhaps word has gotten out within the performing community?

You mean the fading pretty-boy was acting all Hollywood? Yeah what the heck, he pretends to be a singer, what's another charade.

And just in case some of you thought I was exagerating about people not having to wait in line, I'm not. Unless you got there first thing in the morning (or auditiond in L.A.) there was hardly a line, if at all.

Thanks to Matt and all the others that could answer my question. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. Matt, are you connected with the show in some way? You really have some great insight into what is really happening with the show.

I'm not officially connected with the show, but back when people who had auditioned were looking for answers, I stepped up and started poking my nose where it wasn't wanted. You can't imagine the runaround I got trying to get a hold of someone from the show. I should enter as an act on the show with all the hoops I had to jump through. Eventually I managed to talk to a talent producer and an underling in the AGT/AI office (even they were pretty clueless, but better than nothing).

So, between that, being a moderator here last season, doing research and having extended contact with numerous auditioners and contestants from last season I've managed to piece together quite a bit - for what it's worth.

Well Matt pretty much summed it up, but I'll tell about our experience. Erica auditioned last year in Atlanta and also in Dallas this year. Atlanta was much more organized then Dallas. Everyone in line gets seen as long as they are in line by the deadline. In Atlanta, if I had to guess I would say about 800 in line, but that was the first day only and I'm sure the next day had less.
Dallas had about 500 if even, again first day only. They give everyone in line a wrist band with numbers and they call so many in at a time. In Atlanta we were in and done with her audition by about 1:00 in the afternoon. In Dallas we were in line at about 5:00 in the morning and this took much longer, because they were filming tons of footage outside with Jerry Springer (The show opener) over and over and over until 1:00 or so. Once inside you register and they assign your number which is the same as your wrist band.
The registration process only takes a few minutes, because you already have all your paperwork filled out and you hand it to them. Then you go and wait in another room until they call your number. They usually have about 4-5 rooms going at the same time so they call about 4-5 people at a time. They allow 90 secs and this is in front of 3-4 casting directors so I assume maybe bottom line producers as well. Sometimes they send two in a room at a time. Erica went in with a guy name Robert who btw made it and I've been looking for him and haven't seen him yet. Anyway Erica was in and out in 92 secs LOL! As soon as she walked in they said we know you from youtube. She sang and they asked nothing and told her thank you and we were done. Robert was there for about four more hours being interviewed by producers etc.. So you never know what to expect. We were shocked when they called, but after everything that's happened we know now that they had planned on having her on the show the minute she walked in the door. (The link to Bianca) They said "We know you from you tube" and I guess you could say her and Bianca are rivals on there so that's was the viewers have made it seem anyway. BTW her video was on you tube before Bianca came out on AGT.

We lucked out, because we heard about the auditions in Dallas at the last minute and drove there and got the call within a week. At least we didn't have to wait around all that time wondering like the ones from the other cities.
Matt was right, there were people on the Dallas show that auditioned in other cities like the Duttens; they auditioned in Branson, Mo. Several acts from Vegas were on the Dallas show. Last night they had a couple of acts on that auditned in Dallas. I haven't quite figured out why they do that. My first thought was balancing out the talent etc.. But I am not seeing that. It seems like the Chicago show had the best turnout and half those people didn't even Audition in Chicago. I fill they did that because that’s where Jerry Springer is from.
Rumor has it around here in Texas is that Dallas was the worst show, because of politics involving President Bush. uhmm don’t know, but they sure are making us look bad. As Pierce would say the talent in Texas is horrific.

I noticed last night when I watched last week's show after this week's show. They had some of the contestants standing outside or something in LA when David was late for last week's ep and they showed him talking to Grannie Perl (from LA auditions) and watching the baton girl that dropped (from Chicago auditions). I wonder how many of these people were not really at that cities open call but other cities and let them say they were from that audition.

I think all of the outdoor contact with Hoff took place in Los Angeles which I'm pretty sure was the only open call he was at. Also, any outdoor contact with Jerry too place in Dallas, which I'm sure was the only open call he attended. We have pics of both open calls in our Gallery at Path2fame if anyone cares to look.
