Full Version: Father's Day is almost here...

There was a thread for Mother's Day last month, so I figured that now would be the right time to do the same for Father's Day. =)

What will you be getting the "Dad" in your life?

I'm definitely a "Daddy's Little Girl" and (i am a bit embarassed to admit it blush.gif ) I'm so used to getting things from my dad that I have NO IDEA what the heck to give him. My brother and I usually treat my Dad out to breakfast but with my mom being out of town next weekend, we feel the need to make up for her absense. My dad's not the most technically saavy person on the planet. He JUST learned out to look stuff up in Yahoo! Sports. tongue.gif I'd love to maybe take him to a Giant's game but we did that last year. We gave my madre and iPod for Mother's Day, so I feel the need to get my dad something extra special as well..but WHAT? Everytime I try to gauge his interest for anything, he says he wants nothing and that's the end of conversation.

Any Suggestions? huh.gif

My dad is out of town and likes to gamble so I am sending him $. This probably doesn't help you but it does make it easy on me. Spouse and I only have a cat and he does not want to be the daddy of cat so no recognition on the home front.

DmD does your dad like to read? favorite sports team? Book stores have great selections of hobby/sports memorabilia books that could cater to his interests.

But deep down if he says he doesnt want anything, and you know him pretty good, he is probably telling the truth.

A card and a heartfelt poem could make his day as well.

My Dad always likes things that he finds too impractical to purchase himself. He loves to relax with a nice glass of Scotch (He's a light to moderate drinker, so just a glass every day or so).

He'd never buy one of those expensive single malt Scotches (he's too frugal) , so that makes a great gift for him and something he'd really appreciate.

My kids once got me some personalized guitar picks. That was a FANTASTIC gift. A big bag of picks with my name on them.
snogging_staplers
Is there a DVD box set of his favorite movie and/or TV show? That could work. smile.gif

I'm getting my dad a Best Buy giftcard. It's like his second home.
scarlett_jem
We'll be spending Father's Day with Ed's parents. We'll probably go to some steak/fish house, him and his parents love fish, but I can't stand it, yuck! I always end up ordering a salad.

I don't have to worry about Father's Day myself, my dad passed away when I was 20.

i will be buying my dad notting hill and letters from iwo jima on DVD. He has interesting taste in movies tongue.gif

dundermifflindee, my mom says you should buy your dad some socks. form her experience, apparently, guys are always in need of new socks huh.gif

hehe My dad likes "Cops" and those Police Video shows laugh.gif
Do they have a Cops DVD somewhere? ..then again, when you mentioned Best Buy you just reminded me that my pops LOVES his music. I'm thinking a Beatles Boxed Set would be PERFECTO! =)

My Dad mostly reads "How To" books. wink.gif come to think of it, I could probably get him a Giants Jersey. smile.gif

THANKS for your insight. I'm gonna run these by my brother and i'll keep ya'll updated on what we end up getting him. biggrin.gif

My Dad is in Jacksonville & I am in Atlanta so I am sending him a package from Lobstergram-I chose Lobster Tails- Crabcakes- Filets- Chowder & a Cheesecake-They have pre selected combinations or you can choose your own items- It's delivered by Fed Ex in a Gift Box & is a gourmet treat- I've used them before & Highly recommend them. Just GOOGLE them & take a peek.

I wish my kids were old enough to read this thread! Great gift ideas! Best Buy cards, Lobstertails, etc. Very impressive.
Pam_Halpert_1
I am daddys little girl as well. But my dad HATES stuff. He is a minimalist. So when I buy him things he just throws them away. I write him a personal card and he gets to pick where we eat dinner.

my mom is the same way. Neither of them gets gifts becasue they just say. I do not need this why did you buy it and throw it away.
prettyinpink86
My dad is impossible to shop for. He claims that he doesn't want a gift but I know deep down he prefers something with sentimental value. Or, chocolate laugh.gif. I think I may get him something from Godiva's or another high end class chocolate shop. Or maybe a nice bootle of rum. Or, I can learn how to cook & bbq him a steak. Than again, he refuses to let me near the bbq laugh.gif.

My dad is the same way. Extremely frugal and non-materialistic. I'm the complete opposite...lol

He does like DVD's though, but even that is tough because he's so picky.

I think I might get him a gift card for Best Buy...sadly it's come down to that because I don't know what else to get him.

I am the Dad in my life....my father died in 1986. I think I'll give myself a mental health day, and try to block the sounds of a houseful of PMS-bound women from intruding on it.

Fortunately my Dad has a couple big hobbies. Since he's retired now, and he and Mom have moved to the Oregon coast, it's all about fishing, fishing, and more fishing. He loves when we give him gift certificates to places like Cabrala or REI, etc. He goes on little shopping sprees on the internet. So cute. Got to have all the little gadgets you know. cool.gif I'm also going to check out books and videos on . . . . fishing. wink.gif

Hubby kind of ruined his Father's Day gift. He's been watching the Soprano's since the first season 9 years ago. He was so disturbed by the finale last night, he said something like, "well that's one I won't be buying on video." (He hardly buys any DVD, just doesn't watch things over and over again, blink.gif) . Well I had just bought him the S1 DVD set plus one of the books. rolleyes.gif I'm going to have to think about this some more, or just let him cool down from the finale. Our daughter made him something at preschool, so that's covered, and then I finally, we'll take him out to a Prime Rib place nearby. This guy's all about beef, beef, and more beef. tongue.gif

I AM the dad in my life. laugh.gif

I'm probably going to get my dad a card or something easy. I'm still in college and therefore have no money.

Now, what will "mom" get me, the dad, this season? Nothing. I didn't get her anything, and she and I are not together. The BEST thing she could give me is my family back. sad01.gif

sad.gif All to often it seems, dads get the raw deal in these situations. Happened to my brother too. Fortunately/unfortunately she was a nut case, and he managed to get his 3 girls, and that's made all the difference in their lives. Don't ever, ever, give up. sleep.gif

Thanks for all the support, albeit a place where none is needed. happy.gif

I love my daughter with all my heart and wouldn't dream of giving her up for anything on the planet. The mom isn't THAT crazy; we still get along. Lately we've been getting along great. blink.gif It's suprising.
"The boyfriend"...that's another story. dry.gif

...but yeah. I got screwed.

My dad is difficult to buy for. I used to buy him food - special treats like pie or cake from his favorite bakery, but he's diabetic now and can't have them as much.

He has kind of expensive tastes in clothes - not stuffy or dressy, but he likes Filson and Orvis, and those brands are kind of pricey.

So.....I dunno. Maybe we can just go out to dinner or something.

Suggestions:

Best Buy "stuff"
Bass Pro Shop/Cabella's
Hickory Farms gift sets
Barbecue utensils/sets
Allposters.com - unique tin signs/cool car posters
Car stuff - wax/detailing kits
Camping stuff - cooler, sleeping bag, etc.
Tailgating/Sports

Wow, why couldn't I think of all these when I was shopping for my dad? tongue.gif Good luck!

It's not easy being diabetic - I am, and I know. But the good thing is that some of the medical attitudes have changed. Used to be that you'd be told that you couldn't have anything you liked. That would cause resentment and make it very hard to maintain your glucose levels where they need to be. Now they tell you that you can have anything you want, but you're going to pay for it, one way or another. Pastries are filled with sugar and carbohydrates, so your dad will practically have to fast all day if he eats much of it.

Hmm. We got my dad a really nice golf club he wanted one year, we might do that again.

Either that or new clothes.

Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there!!!

Have a great weekend!!!

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back was hysterical. I think it was the best out of all of them. Did your dad see Clerks 2 yet? I think you can get them as a set.
Roy_Anderson
He already owns Clerks 2

Wow. Your dad has good taste in movies.

Father's Day and my dad's birthday are within a couple weeks of each other, so this year my sister and I decided to combine the two and pool our money together to get him an ipod and a boombox for it. Music is so important to my dad, and I just can't think of anything else to get him that he already doesn't have. I think he's going to kill us, but he'll end up loving it. He goes on lots of walks on his own, and I think he'll use it a lot for when he's working in the backyard.

Now I just have to figure out what to get my step-dad. He is so hard to shop for, we usually just get him a gift card to Best Buy. I'm so sick of that, though. I was thinking my sister and I could go in on the Mel Brooks DVD set for him, but I have to run that by my mom first. It's so frustrating when you ask what they want and they just say "I don't know" or "Don't worry about it." Both of my parents just go out and buy whatever they want or need so that doesn't leave a lot of room for good presents from us. rolleyes.gif
grief_bone
Your dad like to fish? Take him fishing.

Does he like to golf? Take him golfing.

Movie nut? Take him to a movie or watch a DVD together.

End of the day, what he'll remember most is you spending time with him.

Okay..so here's the scoop.

It turns out that my dad and my uncle are going to Reno together for the weekend. My dad enjoys gambling (its not out of hand, so no worries smile.gif). I ended up giving him some spending cash. ..of couse, I will be expecting a little *ahem* winning fee($) if he wins with the money i gave him. laugh.gif jk

When I gave him the money he stared at me and asked me about 5 times if I was sure and even tried to hand it back to me. I told him I loved him and to enjoy himself this weekend. smile.gif I love my poppa! biggrin.gif
bloodwillow
Mine will be getting a card and money. (They've been doing some outdoor renovations, and what not.)

It was my dad's birthday on the 12th so we just got him one gift. We almost got him a hammock, but went for the more practical choice of a new sleeping bag(cause his is a 25 year old arctic one) and he really liked it. Then later that evening I went to the park with him and we played catch!

So funny. laugh.gif That's the same line of cards that includes one with Michael talking about reverse psychology.

Hubby's in the other room engrossed in his Sopranos book. Win-win! And just to prove that guys can appreciate really good chocolate, he got a box of his favorite Belgian chocolates, (they're REALLY good):

The Father's Day card I made for my dad. Yes I realize how old I am tongue.gif

He had to open his presents last night because he had to work at the fire station today.

So in honor of Father's Day almost being here again, I thought I'd go and find this thread.

What will you be doing for your father? I could use some inspiration for an original gift/idea.
hubbabubbaMAX
I have no idea. I plan on doing more than I did for my mom, which I am ashamed to say, nothing.

I'm not planning nothing too special though. He didnt act or support me very much this year.
I'm most likeley making a card like every year, and finding something that suits him well. Something religious.... something funny..I can't choose right now.
Wedd329
Can't help you there--don't talk to my father. I do tend to find that gift cards to places like Sports Authority, Modell's and such sports-oriented places work. As do tickets to sporting events. Or an Amazon gift card so they can get what they want!

We're going to my Uncle's boat and we're going to cook out.It should be good.Hopefully it doesn't rain.*fingers crossed*

There's a really old tree in our front yard that has a big hole in the front, and every year an owl has babies in it. This year the baby was my parent's favorite thing to watch. They would take pictures of her and watch her w/the binoculars all day. So for dad's day, I got 3 photos of the baby taking her first steps out of the tree, and put them in a frame. I think he'll love it smile.gif

For My Dad: He'll get a phone call from me. I know that sounds horrible, but he has everything and well, we don't speak much as it is, so a phone call is a lot between us.

For My Step-dad: He deserves everything and will be happy to get just about anything from me. Yet, I have this desire to make it special. I usually like to get him plants. We tend to bond over plants.

For My Father In Law: He's awesome and very simple. Totally going to buy him a card and some black licorice. He loooooooves black licorice.

For My Husband: My son and I got him tickets to this Star Wars event/exhibit at the science museum including a film about special effects in the Omni-theatre. It sounds totally awesome and I know he'll love it. I think it will be interesting to see if my son responds to the stuff and if it may be something they'll bond over in the future.

Hubby is leaving on a business trip on the afternoon of Father's Day, so I've promised him a big breakfast before church, and I bought him a book that will hopefully keep him entertained while he's gone for the week.

I still can't figure out what to do for all the grandfathers!
petersons14
I'm considering something grill-related. My father is planning a large get together for the 4th of July. Maybe I can get him grill accessories...

He's always the kind that says he doesn't need anything...and he means it. I nearly feel guilty buying him a gift. I would certainly feel guiltier NOT buying him a gift though.

I put my Dad's Father's Day gift in the mail this morning. He always needs new shirts. I sent him a shirt with a gift card to his favorite fishing store tucked in the pocket, along with a box of Harry & David goodies. I'll call my Dad on Sunday and talk to him for about 10 minutes, which is much more than usual. He isn't much of a talker, unless it is about fishing. smile.gif
Office_holic
I bought the kids dad a PS3 game(boxing), some western movie dvds, and finishing up with taking the kids pictures for his triple frame for his office. smile.gif

It is also my sons 14th birthday on Sunday so I have to figure out a combined birthday dinner to suit the men. wink.gif

My dad is getting a gift card to Office Max so he can stock up on ink cartridges for his photo printer. I'll see him tomorrow, but we're having a bigger family gathering next Sunday, so this weekend will be fairly low-key.

My dad was a great man. He died in 1996 at the age of 76. He worked hard his whole life. He always worked the afternoon shift, 3-11pm, so he could get us kids off to school in the morning. He would do my hair for me when I was little. I remember the tight rubberbands and AquaNet hairspray, and him ironing blouses for my sister and me. He was a good cook! I never heard him say a mean thing about anyone. He never missed Mass and he said the Rosary every day...on his knees beside his bed. He thought Archie Bunker was the funniest man on the face of the earth. Everything he did was for us, there wasn't a selfish bone in his body. He was kind to strangers, loved the Tigers and the Red Wings, and his Crown Victoria. He used to say, "That's what she said," but it went way over my head!

Happy Father's Day dad. I love you. I miss you. sad01.gif

BMAC - that was a lovely tribute to your father. It is wonderful that you have so many happy memories of him.

We actually had a decent Father's Day. When Jay came back from his visit we gave him an early graduation present--a bike. He was so excited. We went downstairs and he rode it around the block like five times and I took video and pictures of it while Tom ran alongside him to make sure he didn't fall (which he almost busted his a$$ badly once). We went past the deli and some kid was like, "Oh, that guy's teaching his son to ride a bike". I didn't get him saying that on tape though. But it was a pretty good day.
