My recap for the second season premiere -- "Last Days of Summer" -- just went up at The Recapist!
Here's the teaser:
I'm so happy to be back with my Dillon family I'd like to climb right through the TV screen and give them all a big hug (and maybe a little grope here or there). Y'all look good! Or, as Tim Riggins would put it, complete with throaty murmur and appreciative leer, "Like,
real good." If you're new to the show, hang on to your bathing suit, because we're literally diving right into season two. If you're like me and you've been
obsessive stalkerish a big fan right from the beginning, having them start the season with an extended scene at the Dillon community pool -- with more skin on display in two minutes than we saw in all twenty-two episodes combined last year -- is a little slice of Heaven. The kids have obviously decided to get it on, bang a gong, and wring every single drop of fun out of the last days of summer, or, as it's known in Dillon, the "pre-season."

As usual, an awesome review. :-)
I couldn't agree with you more about Trouble and Landry. That was the only section that seemed out of sync with the show and the characters that we know. And the thing is there could have been plenty of story if they had done the right thing from the beginning. *sigh* My theory is that the guy isn't really dead and will show up sometime soon.
Did you see the preview? I whooped out loud when Landry actually said the words!

Ran.....I love your writing with it's raunchy elegance, it's just stellar!!!
Yep, I'm with Sharnina I don't think he dead either. Plus, I read in a San Antonio newspaper, that this story will follow, what we are have come, to depend on, with the Friday Night Lights writers. A good solid story. That will probably border on brilliance. This whole story about Tyra and the stalker, was a complete shocker for me. Plus, I don't think that the stalker, could be scared off. He is determine to hurt her. He reminds me of the bad guy in the movie "Cape Fear".
Now, I will move on to my favorite part. Tim and Lyla. First, thank you for the pic of his "guns". Did that boy, get better looking or what?? Yep..... he sure did! And, I for one loved, what he said to her. In his own way, told her he still thinks about her.
And how about Lyla's prayer at the supper table. I loved it!!! Wow, is that girl getting stronger. Speaking her mind, right where in front of God and her mother. Buddy would be so proud!

I'm trying to take a "wait and see" attitude with the Tyra/Landry storyline. They haven't steered us wrong yet.

I just watched an interview clip with Taylor Kitsch --
here's the link, with the TK spot about halfway down the list. It has a scene from an upcoming episode, so if you're spoiler-free, you may not want to click. Anyway, aside from being tickled pink that he refers to Tim consistently as "Riggs" and Jason as "Streeter", he talks about how Tim's living on "half an hour of highs and and twenty-three-and-a-half hours of lows."
Sex is a pretty big high, and it's obviously one of Tim's very few happy places. I think football has been another (I could see bagging Lyla as ranking right up there with his best tackles) and with the new coach, football's not the outlet it once was, either physically or emotionally. All of which is a long-winded way of saying I agree with you,
Texas Dreams -- yeah, I think he was needling Lyla a little bit, but I also think he was telling the truth.

Hey, y'all! I'll be updating this same "Season 2 Recaps" thread each week as the new recaps go up, so look for them on Saturday mornings.

I just posted my recap of last night's episode -- "Bad Ideas" -- at The Recapist!
Here's the teaser:
I read a lot this week (seriously, I read so much I about peeled my eyeballs off) about Landry & Trouble's storyline, and how people thought it was melodramatic and OTT and an unnecessarily implausible
OCish twist, so I'd like to start off this week with a little Ranecdote: Picture high school graduation week in a small town in North Carolina, and the kinds of parties seniors throw, complete with beer, necking in corners, and music cranked too loud. Now picture some older guys crashing the party and rubbing up on some of the high school girls. Picture two good guys, guys we'd all known since grade school, taking it upon themselves to protect the girls being harassed…with a baseball bat. Seconds later, one of the harassers was dead, and the next day, those two good guys were arrested and charged. They were allowed to attend graduation; they walked across the stage in their caps and gowns in front of their classmates and families, hand-cuffed together. We in the graduating class stood up as one and clapped for them, which horrified our parents, but it was the only way we knew to support them, to show we remembered more about them than that one moment of uncharacteristic violence. Melodramatic, I can't deny that, but sometimes truth is as messy as fiction.

Amazing as always, Ran.
I loved it when Landry told Trouble (I love that name) that he loved her and then followed it very quickly with "Don't look at me like that. You know, you've known forever. It's not like it's a big secret." Beautiful, simply beautiful.
I'm leary of Mrs. Coach calling the science teacher to pick her up from the hospital. She said she had no one else to call. What about Pam Garrity, Smash Momma, or any of the other 50 women that she knows from football and teaching. This does not bode well.
Grandma Saracen sitting in the chair screaming that she's being robbed was priceless.

Thanks,

Well Ran...... your writing and thoughts are always delicious. A welcome treat, I look forward to each week.
You know, it's true what you said, about a small town anywhere, is not immune to unbelieveable tragedy. Last summer, my town suffer an unbelieveable tragedy. A young girl was raped by two men, and left for dead. It was later discovered, that they had been following her, and knew her routine. Yep, they caught them, and they are now in prison. The young lady survived and is doing unbelieveable well! I swear that girl is amazing. She is involved in all kinds of out reach programs for rape victims.
She however, is not like Tyra, she is more like Lyla. But, rape knows no class.
Now, who else thinks grandma Saracen is funny. I mean, can you really, put a price tag on happiness? Nope, because grandma Saracen is priceless, even with the $2400.00 tiara. She even got Landry to smile and say how pretty, she would look at the "Rite Aide." Who else is going to fight for Tapioca Pudding? And grab it away, from the Pudding Police. That would be our grandma Saracen!!!
Even Riggins had a funny moment, "Coach, am I a thing of beauty too" Yes.....Yes..... you are!!! Riggo
I thought this week episode was great. It's just going to get better, just like last year. Anyhoo, I love your recap and look forward to this Saturday.

My recap for Episode 203 -- "Are You Ready For Friday Night?" -- is now up at The Recapist!
Here's the teaser:
You know how I can tell NBC is trying to promote
Friday Night Lights to a wider audience than high school kids and men who watch football? Both Lyla
and Tim were half-naked this episode, providing equal opportunity (and exceptionally high quality) skin time, and advertisers included Maybelline and Fisher-Price. Oh, and of course they're still airing that Chevy truck series as a reward for the big brawny he-men who twiddled their thumbs through the mascara commercial.

I just posted my recap for "Let's Get It On" (hands-down my favorite ep of the season so far) at The Recapist!
Here's the teaser:
Oooooohhh, yes, by all means, let's get it on. If you've somehow wandered over here expecting objective critical commentary, sorry, you're S.O.L. There's nothing but flail and squee and inappropriate mmmmmmmsounds in this particular corner of the internet this morning. It's like Jeffrey Reiner called me up and said, "Ran, babe, what can I do for you? What would you like to see? What would make
you happy?" So he gave me Eric and Tami under one roof again, being all sassy and lovey dovey. And then the Panthers won in a patented last-minute
Friday Night Lights cheesefest. And then Julie got her *** handed to her by Matt. But best of all, I got Tim, Jason, and Lyla -- my OT3 -- proving that the whole really can be greater than the sum of its parts, just like Landry said. *happy sigh* My idea of scathing critique for this episode? "Less praying! More lip-licking!"

I read your recap. It was terriffic. You said everything I wanted to say and more. I can only hope that Tim and Lyla get together again. They are too hot together and I really hope that Jason finds someone too:)
The scene with the 3 of them dancing and kissing was way too much for regular tv! Well, that is if the viewer has made an investment in the characters and relates to them. I cried, I shouted and then, by the time the show ended, I was so tired I missed the late news!
Keep up the great work!

Jenna, honey, you're my kind of gal. Here's the teaser:
What am I thankful for this year? Once I get beyond the givens of reasonable health and family happiness, a couple of things come immediately to mind: One is

Go Heels! And I'm especially grateful that when production shuts down in early December, the well-oiled machine that generates

Hey Ran, I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!!! I have been reading your recaps.....and you are as bright as the star on my christmas tree!!! I have been having my own Friday Nights Light, mini marthron over the holiday. One thing I notice, I think during the "previously on Friday Night Lights", portion of the show. You know, the stuff at the beginning, what happen last week or so. I think some of these are deleted scenes. I first notice this during the beach scene with Jason, Lyla and Tim. In one of these "previously scenes" Jason says he had an "epiphany out there" he didn't say that the week before just,"I not having the surgery." And "I wasn't thinking." Also, Lyla asking Sanitago if he want to play football and he answers " who doesn't want to be a Panther?" Which explains why she asked Tim to help. And one more, the Coach at Jason's birthday party telling Tim "I'm sorry but your still not on the team." Which showed that Tim was taking to heart what Smash had said earlier, that football was worth fighting for. Anyhoo, maybe it's just me.

No, Texas Dreams, it's not just you! I noticed it too - the one about Lyla and Santiago and him telling her "who doesn't want to be a Panther" - and did a double take. Kept trying to figure out if I had somehow missed part of the show - not likely since I usually record and watch later - or what. I didn't realize there were others! ...Now I guess we need to be watching the "Previously on FNL" a bit closer each week. They are dropping some good clues into these clips, deleted scenes that really do help fill in the gaps in the story.

My recap of last night's episode -- Seeing Other People -- is now up at The Recapist!
Here's the teaser:
Usually, my show makes me think about the big stuff: family, marriage, community, religion. Not this week, though. No, this week, I'm pondering men's underpants. In the generation since I was privy to more than one man's skivvies on a regular basis, have things changed so much? Do high school boys really wear boxers? With their bait and tackle just dangling out there in a sea of plaid? Whatever happened to tightey whiteys? To keeping the boys close to home? Is that an honor now reserved for beer-bellied, meth-making, ferret-loving guys named Guy? It's like the producers are thumbing their noses at me after my display of Kitschflesh in last week's recap; either that or they know that if they'd sent Gaius Charles on his 3.8 second dormdash in a pair of nice, athletically supportive burgundy jockey shorts, the entire quotient of female viewers (and perhaps some of the male) might have spontaneously exploded.

I gotta tell ya....girl you got skills!!!! It is so much fun to read your reviews. And this one is sexy, raunchy, touching and funny!! Your refences to Cooter in the tighty whitey too funny. The whole deer stand scene. The huntin' and drinkin' especially the binocular flask. I laughed so hard, I'm still smiling.
I too wish Julie and Matt had been each other's first. I'm not a fan of Carlotta's but I can see how much Matt likes her. Grandma is still queen. I love her. I love the way she delivered that line,"I can't believe you don't know who Angie Dickerson is." Love her!
Yep, your are so right about the level of comfort between Landry and Lyla. They know each other, even if we haven't seen it on scene. It's there and it was brilliant to watch. So touching to see the two them have a deep poignant conversation. So well written and acted.

WOW.....What an episode. A Tim Riggins episode.......it was brilliant until the end. I adored all his scenes at the Taylor's home. He was so comfortable there bonding with Coach and Julie, playing with Gracie and flirting with Shelly. But like all good things it must come to an end.
Well, tell me what do you think about Matt and Carlotta........hmmmm..... not much. Me either.
But Landry and Tyra...thats different. I get that he makes her feel more and that is scary for her. I don't think she has ever let herself, really care about anyone including Tim. I think she and Tim are cut from the same cloth so to speak. They don't think they deserve something good. Because it can't last, it never does. But she is trying. The way she looked at Landry during the Fall Dance. Was so heart felt, she was happy to see him. But in the end she looks wistful and sad.
Now, when Pam tells Lyla about her up coming wedding. You could see it in Lyla's face the pain and surprise as she fought back tears. Very touching. And what about Buddy reaction and his pleads at Pam's front door. That was priceless. I notice you called him Buddy and not St. Satan. Yep, I think even Buddy has grown up and grown on all of us too.
Great recap..... I loved it and your wit.
Once, again I wish you and yours the very best 2008 has to offer.

My recap for last night's awesome episode -- Jumping The Gun -- is now up at The Recapist!
Here's the teaser:
When I first saw the episode title, I read it as "Jumping The
Guns" and assumed that one of those Taylor girls had finally succumbed to her libidinous nature and pounced on Tim Riggins. You have to admit, the social experiment of the Taylor Home for Wayward Boys hit a big snag thanks to the wayward Taylor girls. Between "Shels" and "Jules" (and his own checkered history, which gave him exactly zero inches of wiggle room) Tim ended up out on his keester. Again. That's mighty poor payment for keeping Julie from losing her vir gin gin to a shaggy-haired pipsqueak who's now in the running -- along with Guy's third ferret, Cooter -- for Vermin I'd Most Like To Squish.
Read the full recap at The RecapistNote: We don't rate our recaps at The Recapist, but be aware that all my recaps contain strong language and sexual innuendo.

Wow....a Riggins episode followed by a Riggins episode. It's like something rare....you know like spotting Big Foot or those UFO's, the're seeing in Stephenville, Texas right now. Something you don't expect. But it's sooo exciting to watch.
Anyhoo, I love it when your all wordy and sparkly with Big Sparkly sparks. Yep, I miss those sparks between Tim and Miss Garrity. Maybe we will get a chance to see those sparks. Love your recap, just great stuff.

Thanks,
Texas Dreams! It looks like perhaps they're going to revisit the Tim/Lyla thing (at least the previews seem to indicate that) which makes me happy, and makes
Kelly Button want to throw tomatoes at me.

Riggins-heavy eps are definitely the best!
