Full Version: Freezing the cat

I watched the office for the first time this week. It was on the recommendation of my two adult children, because they said it was really funny. Today my daughter and I were talking about it and I asked her what the deal was with the two characters who had broken up because the guy had killed the girl's cat. She said that in an earlier episode the girl had asked him to give her cat medicine, and instead he put the cat in the freezer and killed it. And apparently after the female character found out about it she said "I wondered why my frozen vegetable packages were shredded".

I have to say that I'm appalled at this blatant characterization of animal abuse, but what is worse is, apparently the viewing audience of The Office thinks this is funny? I can only imagine how many cats have met this same fate in the weeks following this episode. Don't you all realize that when abuse of this nature is trivialized, it desensitizes us to cruelty to animals. I don't find this plot line amusing I find it sickening. Needless to say I won't be watching again, and you can deride me for lacking a sense humor if you wish, but the day that the depiction of the torture an innocent animal becomes comedy for the masses is the day I swear off the tube entirely. And shame on NBC for allowing this script to be aired.

It's not suppose to be a hilarious storyline or anything- I myself am a cat lover. It's just something Dwight would do- he is a farmer and from his experience in the world, when he sees an animal in pain his instinct is to put it out of it's misery. Dwight seriously thought he was doing Angela and the cat a favor. Just like when they found the dead bird last season and Dwight tried to put it in a can to bury it- that's just the way Dwight is *shrugs shoulders*

I think it is something that you need to see to make a judgment on. Also, you really need to know who Dwight is and where he was coming from.

Here are a few things wrong with the cat:
Angela: There's a diabetes shot, roll the insulin in your hand, don't shake it. She gets an ace inhibitor with her meal, but you have to put her right in front of the dish or she won't see it because of the cataracts. Mix one capsule of omega fatty acid in with her kidney medicine, um... and you want to give that to her 15 minutes after she's eaten. And, oh and there's a fungal cream because she has this infection under her tail, so you're gonna have to lift her tail and put the cream right at the base of her tail.

The cat was really really sick. Angela was keeping it alive because she loved it. Dwight euthanized the cat because he is a farmer, and that is what he does when he sees an animal in pain.

He fed the cat medicine and placed it in the freezer to make the death faster. The cat, unfortunately, threw up the medicine.

The storyline wasn't meant for be laughed about, like haha. It showed how these two didn't see eye-to-eye on the subject. Just like euthanasia is a highly debatable subject in real life.

What did you think of the episode you did see? if you liked it, you should give it another chance.

I feel bad for Dwight on this because I see this as what was supposed to be an act of mercy turned around on him and bit him on the butt. Maybe it was nature telling us IT will decide when someone/somethings time is up and we should not play god. Even if its totally fun.

I wouldn't characterize it as the audience laughing at blatant, vicious humor, but more a comedy of errors in which a character thinks he is doing the right thing, and it sorta goes awry.

While there are no sacred cows (er, cats in this instance) when it comes to plotlines or comedic material, the writers tend to use such questionable examples as life lessons - and usually the characters learn from their mistakes (usually).

The Gay Witch Hunt episode was viewed as quite inflamatory by calling homophobia into the spotlight. Fortunately Michael had a revalation about his viewpoints, leaving us with options to find humor in both TWSS and TWHS.

Definitley worth a few more viewings to validate The Office writers present genuinely caring characters who are fallable, just like the rest of us.

For the record, I doubt they actually killed a real cat...so I think everything is OoooKay!

There was a report on the news, apparently over 4 million cats have been frozen to death in the past three weeks.

Honestly, I doubt the kind of idiotic kids who would emulate what they see on TV are watching The Office.

I have to say when Dwight first did this I thought he had gone too far even for Dwight...but after seeing seeing how it has played out with Angela and Andy and "D" I feel like he's been through quite a bit because of it

...who knows how that whole Dwight, Angela, Andy triangle is going to play out

This happened in the episode Fun Run. And The Office has season 4 episodes online right on NBC.com.

It's not as if Dwight just put her cat in the freezer to be mean. He thought it was dead, it was just a matter of practical storage.
