Adam Beach Makes Official Debut As New Special Victims Unit Detective Chester Lake

NEW YORK March 6, 2007 In the powerful star-studded season finale of NBC's "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," episode "Screwed" (Tuesday, May 22nd at 10 PM ET/PT). Actor/rapper Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges returns to SVU, along with guest star appearances by Star Jones Reynolds, Steven Weber, Nancy Grace, LisaGay Hamilton, Ernest Waddell, Vincent Spano, Judith Light, Michael Weston. In addition, Adam Beach makes his debut as new Special Victims Unit Detective 'Chester Lake.'

Bridges, in a powerful performance reprising his role as Darius Parker, the step-son of Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola (Ice-T) and son of Teresa Randall (guest star LisaGay Hamilton) is on trial, a year later for the brutal murder of a woman and her baby, wreaking havoc for the detectives in the SVU. Parker (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges) is back to settle a score with his family and is now represented by defense attorney Matthew Greyson (guest star Steven Weber) a former police officer, who has an incredible record for getting his clients cleared. Star Jones Reynolds and Nancy Grace appear in the episode as the case gains momentum in the media. The two personalities appear as themselves offering their opinions on the case.

"It's so cool to be returning to work with the Law & Order: SVU family. My first experience was so great and I am honored that they have asked me to return for the season finale. Once again, the amazing script and the talented cast immediately made me accept their offer. I look forward to reprising my role on the show and giving the audience a big bang finale that they will never forget!" Said Bridges.

In guest starring on SVU, Reynolds said, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, is my favorite show on television, I have never missed an episode since its premiere. When I was asked to appear on the show I immediately accepted the honor without hesitation. I am very excited to work alongside the incredibly talented cast and crew of Law &Order: SVU as well as the brilliant Dick Wolf."

Film star Adam Beach makes his return to the SVU as Detective Chester Lake, but this time for good. As there is unseen chaos in the SVU, Det. Lake is brought in to the SVU to help out permanently. Beach's character, Chester Lake, was first introduced to the series earlier this season when he joined forces with Det. Odafin Tutola (Ice-T) to track down a rapist who had struck in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Additionally, all reprising their roles on SVU are Judith Light as Judge Elizabeth Donnelly, Vincent Spano as FBI Agent Dean Porter, Ernest Waddell as Ken Randall, and Michael Weston as Simon Marsden.

Beach joins the cast of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit as Detective "Chester Lake", an SVU detective from Brooklyn, for the show's upcoming ninth season. The role will mark Beach's return to television since his appearances on "JAG" and "Third Watch" as he has been busy with a successful film career. Beach can be seen in Clint Eastwood's critically acclaimed Flags of Our Fathers, in a role, as one of the flag raisers on Iwo Jima, which earned him a Satellite Award Nomination. Beach has also just finished filming the HBO film adaptation of the book Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, which was produced by Law & Order: Special Victims Unit Executive Producer Dick Wolf.

Bridges is the only rap music star to have such a successful and immediate crossover from music into film. He won a Critics Choice Award "Best Ensemble ("Crash"); a SAG Award - Best Ensemble ("Crash") and he was a nominee for his first NAACP Image acting award for Best Supporting Actor ("Crash"). "Crash" and "Hustle & Flow" are only Bridges' second and third films. His first was "2 Fast 2 Furious," the blockbuster sequel to "The Fast & The Furious." Most recently Bridges won Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album, "Release Therapy" and Best Rap Song, "Money Maker," he performed "Runaway Love" - the current #1 song on the R&B charts live with Mary J. Blige and special guests Earth, Wind & Fire. Bridges is scheduled to play the Angry Elf in the 2007 movie, "Fred Claus" opposite Vince Vaughn, Paul Giamatti, and Kevin Spacey.

Grace hosts Headline News' legal analysis program, Nancy Grace, on Headline Prime, and Nancy Grace: Closing Arguments on Court TV. She is based in CNN's New York bureau. One of television's most respected legal analysts, Grace comes to Headline News from Court TV, where she hosts the live daily trial coverage program, Closing Arguments. She also has appeared as a legal commentator on CNN's Larry King Live, ABC's The View, The Oprah Winfrey Show and numerous other cable and network programs. Her book, Objection!, was published by Hyperion in April 2005 and was an instant New York Times bestseller.

Jones Reynolds, a lawyer and former prosecutor, is known to television viewers for her candor, confidence and uncanny ability to clarify muddy legal issue and pop culture concerns. Her knowledge of the law and talent for television have won her critical acclaim as a news and legal correspondent. Also a best-selling author, Mrs. Jones Reynolds released her second book in February 2006, Shine: A Physical, Emotional and Spiritual Journey to Finding Love, a personal and inspiring account of the fundamental steps toward achieving self-fulfillment.

"Screwed" was written by veteran writer/producer Judith McCreary who has worked on the show for years. In addition, McCreary has worked on various network series including: Dick Wolf's "New York Undercover," "413 Hope Street," "Lyon's Den" and "Threat Matrix," before landing on "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and the psychological drama entitled "Criminal Minds."

Mariska Hargitay, Chris Meloni, Dann Florek, Richard Belzer, B.D. Wong, Diane Neal and Tamara Tunie also star in "Law & Order: SVU."

Executive producers for "Law & Order: SVU" are Dick Wolf, Neal Baer, Ted Kotcheff and Peter Jankowski "Law & Order: SVU" is produced by Wolf Films in association with NBC Universal Television Studio.

Thanks Love2Liv.

I have to wonder if Simon Marsden wont get off.(That is if he really did do it,god forbid). He's supposed to be returning in Florida and then he's coming back in this eppy?? I hope this means a happy ending for Benson.
dmt
I thought DNA pretty much said he did the rape in Philadelphia. Hmmm, depends on what Florida gives us. April/May is just too far away.
Love2Liv
I hoping for Liv's metal wellness, that Simon is innocent... even if he gets wrongly convicted and was set up by the Jersey Captain I can live with that. As long as he's innocent.

We know Liv has a harrrd time in "Florida" so I dont want to to tear at the seams anymore than necessary.

This episode has soooo much potential.
BadGurl
I quite agree...I hope Simon is innocent..and was thinking the same thing that maybe the Jersey Captain set him up...seems very plausible and I think they want us to think that too. Would be so nice for Liv to have family around her. SIGH Guess we will see!! WOOO I CAN'T WAIT!!

Bravo! Looks like they are pulling out all the stops for the finale this time. One thing's for sure, with all the returns, guest stars, and new additions, it's bound to be one heck of a season finale!

Thanks for the info Love2Liv!

Love2Liv and BadGurl I would love for Liv to have some assemblance of family, but Simon did jump bail. If he was innocent I think he would have stayed and fought the charges. How much longer do we have? I'm developing a serious case of spring fever... laugh.gif

Lemme represent Simon for a min: Say that he was being set up by the NJ Captain, and say she's the reason he's been harassed by cops for however long it's been going on. That would mean that the very system that's supposed to be fair and justified is corrupt. Who would have faith in a corrupt system when 15-25years of prison time is on the table? Would you be willing to take that chance when in the past you cooperated and even gave DNA to prove your innocence hella years prior?

There comes a point were self preservation comes into play, and if he is innocent, it wouldn't be far-fetched for him to flee.

The defense rests wink.gif
Keiko12
this episode probably must be the one where one of the svu women gets pregnant wink.gif
KatRose
Was the spoiler that one of the SVU women gets pregnant or that a major character is pregnant (i.e. could one of the guys' girlfriend/wife be pregnant)?
HisGirlForevermore
What was said is that a character is pregant and if you are clamouring for a Benson/Stabler romance it will be of great interest.
TammyBee
My guess is that it's Olivia who's pregnant and they did say that Porter was coming back there might be a link to the two. Porter/Olivia might not be what most of us are hoping for but it's better than nothing.

CHRIS 'LUDACRIS' BRIDGES RETURNS IN THE STAR-STUDDED SEASON FINALE; STEVEN WEBER, VINCENT SPANO, JUDITH LIGHT AND LISAGAY HAMILTON ALSO GUEST-STAR WITH NANCY GRACE AND STAR JONES WHO APPEAR AS THEMSELVES – Chris "Ludacris" Bridges reprises his role as Detective Tutuola's (Ice-T) delinquent nephew, as does LisaGay Hamilton as the long-suffering mother, with special guest stars Nancy Grace and Star Jones playing themselves. In addition, new cast member Adam Beach, playing Detective Chester Lake, is reunited with Tutuola. You only have to read the first line with all the guest stars to see that this episode is going to be huge. It looks like Fin and Olivia will take the stage in this one. I'm curious if there's any coincedence between Beach's official beginning as Chester Lake, and the fact that the squad is having so many troubles. It would make no sense to have five detectives (although they pulled it off for half of the first season), so perhaps Munch or Fin will be leaving.

Everyone around SVU says Ice T is definately staying, but I haven't heard anything about Belzer. And knowing Belzer, he won't put up with not being able to talk more than once an episode much longer.

What if Simon's jumping bail has nothing to do with the rape case against him? In one of the spoilers for Florida, it says Simon is involved in a case Agent Porter is working on. If Simon is involved in something the Feds are interested in, he could have reason to fear for his safety. And he can hardly expect help from the local police. That could be the reason he jumped bail.

That could be it. Or it could be that he is guilty and he doesn't want to go to jail. LOL! To be honest, I really don't know what to believe. In Philadelphia, I kept going back and forth to guilty not guilty. My emotions for that guy were all over the place, just as Olivia's were. One minute she was laughing with him and then the next she was questioning him and then she went back to holding him. Until I actually see the guy doing it, I have no idea what to believe.

From Allison Siko's (Kathleen Stabler) myspace blog , her most recent one, she reveals that she will also be in this episode and I believe Isabel Gillies (Kathy) will be too since she's supposed to be the one to tell Elliot that she's pregnant! So it will be a family episode for Stabler, Olivia, and Fin. From the way it's sounding, it should be a 2 hour event!
HisGirlForevermore
Theyy certainly have enough guest stars to do it. I wonder if a 2 hour hour SVU season finale starting at 9 would beat out House in the ratings?

It is abut Darius questioning his mom on the witness stand. My question is why is she there? She wasn't involved in the crime or the investigation. I can ask the same question about Benson and Stabler. They were barely in Venom and were not shown investigating the murder.

Hmmm.good questions, maybe their defense is "of course I am screwed up, my own mother hated me" that and the "my father was violent so I must be" they used them both before.

or maybe they are trying to say the whole squad is crupt and worked together to frame him. Am I crazy or was Elliot in cuffs inthe preview?
HisGirlForevermore
"Hmmm.good questions, maybe their defense is "of course I am screwed up, my own mother hated me" that and the "my father was violent so I must be" they used them both before"

As I remember neither of those defenses worked.

"or maybe they are trying to say the whole squad is crupt and worked together to frame him. Am I crazy or was Elliot in cuffs inthe preview?"

It does look like Elliot's in cuffs. Of course he comitted perjury by lying about Kathleen's DUI. Has he never heard of pleading the fifth?

Unless Darius is claiming the evidence in his trial was contaminated or falsified by the police, favoritism within the squad is not a defense to murder. No judge worth her salt would allow the defense to present evidence on a collateral issue that would prejudice the jury. Misconduct or corruption in the squad would be a matter for IAB or an investigating commission. Cragen and the detectives could find themselves in a lot of trouble. But that needs to be handled seperatily from the murder trial.
Casey would have no reason to call Benson, Stabler or Theresa Randall to the stand. So Darius or his lawyer would have to call them. You can't call just anybody to the witness stand. They have to have information pertinent to the case. Casey could and should question why those three would be called. The judge would have to rule whether their testimony was relevant. The fact that Stabler made Kathleen's DUI disappear has not bearing on Darius's case. Nor does the fact Benson send her brother money when he skipped bail.
It's a different story with Munch, Finn, Warner and any lab technician who worked with the evidence. Their actions can be questioned by the defense in cross examination because Casey will have to call them to make her case against Darius. The judge can still disallow questioning on matters that are irrelevant to the case. For example questioning Munch about his ex-wives would be irrelevant unless it proved Munch was a liar.

It's a problem from a legal standpoint. Not that SVU pays much attention to the law.
stabebabe
In the preview, towards the end right after Olivia looks up and they show a jail, who is the background?? It looks like two people kissing or something, but I can't tell.

That could be. I can't see too much but one of the people definitely has blond hair. If Elliot is in fact arrested and goes to jail, that could be Kathy. That may be when and where she tells him her news.

Or it could be Kathleen coming to apologize for causing trouble.

I actually played it and paused on it (very tricky as it is only on a second) I think the blonde is actually sunlight from a window, the other person is a woman with long dark hair. I can't make out the guys face, To me it looks like Fin's son hugging Olivia. (I know it sounds crazy ) but then you see Olivia with Fin's ex wife in jail. Maybe it is her, but the other person looked taller, and why would they hug?

When
LovelyMariska
Okay, I went and watched the preview like three times and I did not see anyone kissing anyone. I saw Darion's mom sitting in the jail cell and then I saw later Olivia sitting in the same jail cell talking to Darious's mom. I did not see a kissing scene.
Xenandi
Ok it is darius hugging someone. It looked like Olivia. I don't know who though. No kiss.

LM it is right after someone is pulling back the jail doors, you see two people hugging each other for a split second.

I watched it again and all I saw was Darious's mom sitting on the bench in the jail cell with her head in her hands and lying on one of her knees. Olivia was the one opening the door. You can tell this by her sleeve. The person opening the door has black sleeves on and in the next clip that shows the jail cell, Olivia is wearing a black coat.

it really looks like people hugging to me, it does look like Ken hugging someone.

I don't thinkit is olivia opening the door it lloks like a mans hand. It is problably a guard, they wear dark uniforms and they would be the ones to unlock and open a door.

The scene where it looks like Elliot is in cuffs, did anyone else notice it was Olivia next to him pushing him through, it looks like she arresed him. Of course she didn't but this should be interesting.

I don't think Elliot's in cuffs there. It looks like he is holding a cup of coffee that spills on him when the reporters jostle him. Yes, it is Olivia behind him and to his right.

New theory for who is behind Door #1.

The point of the trial for Darius is to bring his family's dirty little secrets out in the open to punish his mother for giving him up. He convinces the judge that Theresa Randall's testimony is crucial to his defense. She is called to the stand but refuses to testify. Judge sends her to jail for contempt of court. Olivia figures out Theresa won't testify because she has never spoken about the rape that resulted in Darius. Olivia convinces her to testify and Darius finds out why his mother can't stand the sight of him. He realises that she wasn't a bad mother as much as a hurt girl. He changes his plea to guilty. The people we see when the door opens are Darius and Theresa coming to terms with each other.

This part is a really great theory! You should write for the show. No joke. I especially agree with her lack of activity on the stand. That is the only logical reason I could think of as to why she was in jail.

This part is a bit to hard to be real. Darious, no matter what his mother had been through, will always hate her. He is doing this trial because he wants revenge. Not to find the truth. If the truth was all he was seeking then why not just ask? The trial is ment to humiliate and bring down the NYPD and his mother. I serioulsy doubt that Teresa will ever come to terms with her son. She regreats ever having him and still wishes that he were out of her life. Even on the stand he asks her what had he ever done to her and she responds "You were born." No matter what happens, I doubt either will ever be the happy mother and son.

They will never be a Hallmark family. But having Theresa tell the truth to Darius and the world will be a release for her. She has kept that secret to herself for too long. Olivia is always saying to rape victims that healing starts when you talk about what happened. And finally hearing the truth from her about why she give him up and what his father did to her has to good for Darius. They can come to terms with each other without a fake, sappy reunion scene.
I don't think Darius is interested in bringing down the NYPD. Except for Finn and he's family. I think his lawyer and the creepy command officer who talks to Cragen are behind that. Cragen has said he has enemies in the police department. CCO is the one who sent Matthew Greyson to be the lawyer for Darius. He is "a former police officer who has an incredible record of getting his clients cleared." He would have an easier time getting his client off if he gets insider information about the prosecution's case from his friend CCO. Lake finds out their relationship and takes pictures. When Cragen is threatened with dismissal, he brings the pictures and other proof that CCO and Grayson are in cahoots. The brass doesn't want THAT made public, so Cragen and the detectives keep their jobs if Cragen accepts a public reprimand for not controlling SVU.

Again this is just a theory.

I can't see that. That woman hates him, but I mean she HATES him, all his life, with the charges she will only hate him more, and he certainly hates her.

Even if they came to terms with their real relationship and decide to face it, much too soon for a hug.

Also, he is accused of an very violent crime, even if she was in jail for contempt, they will never let her see him alone, and he would be in chains.

Also, if she was in jail for contempt for refusing to testify, the hug scene would take place before the testimony where when he asked "what have I ever done to you" and she answers "you were born" HATES him.

I do think though if she is on contempt for refusing to answer questions maybe Olivia was the one who talks her into it, Olivia has a good relationship with Fin's son, maybe she brings him to see his mother. My only question with that is would Olivia be an effective person to talk to considering she is a child of rape? From the mother's point of view?

I don't know that there's a hug behind the door. I have tried to stop the preview to see but can't. It would be too soon for a hug.
Theresa doesn't hate Darius. She hates his father and she is projecting that hate onto him because they like alook. Facing Darius in court isn't the same as facing his father, but it should help her let go of the hate.

"Also, he is accused of an very violent crime, even if she was in jail for contempt, they will never let her see him alone, and he would be in chains."

That would be true if he were convicted. Not if he is just accused.

"Also, if she was in jail for contempt for refusing to testify, the hug scene would take place before the testimony where when he asked "what have I ever done to you" and she answers "you were born" HATES him."
Why would Theresa want to see Darius before she testifies? He wants the information out in public. Her talkingto him in private would serve no purpose.

Olivia can talk to Theresa from the point of view of someone who has seen both sides of the question. She saw what became of her mother. The trouble they had because she was raising her rapist's child. And she can tell Theresa how it feels to know that you aren't loved by the person you most expect to love you. Especially when it is through no fault of your own.
She can also talk to Theresa about the need to tell what happened to her. As long as she keeps that secret, she gives Darius' father power over her life.

This is an approximate transcript of the conversation about Darius between Finn and Theresa in Venom.

Theresa: It happened before I meet you.
Finn: So why'd you give him up?
Theresa: He had to go somewhere. He certainly couldn't stay with me. I was sixteen and his father was a *******. You don't know what he did to me. Darius looks just like him. And now he started to act like him too.
Finn: So why not put him up for adoption? Why give him to your mother to raise?
Theresa:I didn't giver her anything. She took. You knew her. She won't allow blood out of the family.
Finn: Where's the father now?
Theresa: I don't know. I hope he's dead.
Finn: What happened to you Terry?
Theresa: I will not...I won't talk about it. Not to you. Not to anyone.
Finn: Maybe that's the real problem.
Theresa: You don't know what it's like to have to look at someone who has the face of someone you hate. Every time he'd come over to see Ken, every time he came to a family function. It made me sick. I can't stand to look at Darius. Even now.

That helps. Thanks hisgirlforevermore. It does sound kind of like he was not a nice guy. I wonder what he had done? I hope we will find out Tuesday.

Finally got the preview to stop so I could what was behind the opening jail door. There is only one person we can see. The bright bit is sunlight coming through a window. The person has their head in their hands. It is a grey prison jumpsuit the person has on.
So the person is either Theresa or Darius. It may be Theresa before they bring her back to court after a night in jail and her talk with Olivia. So the coming to terms scene in my theory disappears.

I think the eppi is going to focus on the case itself and his (Ludacris) trying to prove the squad is dirty. I think they will tiouch on the issue of him and his mother as a reason for being the way he is but they won't delve into it. With that said I agree she hates him, she may hate him for something he had no control over and her hate is misplaced (of course the murder didn't help) but she does hate him.

I am most anxious to see how they wil shift Munch away from FIn, I am not happy about that at all, I am sure ti won't be as tramatic as Benson and Stabler but they have been partners for 7 years so it has to be hard. I see Fin and Lake knocking heads alot.

I love cragen in the uniform, I would love to see them all in full dress once in a blue.

I had a thought about why Munch and Finn are no longer partners. What if Munch gets promoted? He has taken the Sergant's exam and passed. He has no problems in his record of excessive violence, restraining orders, etc. He would be able to have a supervisory role. Dealing with paperwork and other administrative stuff while still being in the office to add his thoughts to discussions of the cases.
