Speaking of Britain, we've seen how farked up their Universal Healthcare system is...that's why so many people are worried. There are more people here. Britain can't handle it. Canada can't handle it. And you want to bring it here and make everyone equally miserable?

Several months ago, I heard a Canadian woman on the radio talking about their "wonderful" healthcare system. Her daughter (a toddler at the time) had some sort of condition that needed treatment. Well, of course, there's a waiting list for seeing doctors & getting treatment in Canada. Her daughter ended up dying as a result of that waiting list.
A year or 2 later, her husband got sick, and he needed treatment. Goody, another waiting list. They decided, while waiting, that they'd visit some friends in Texas. While in Texas, they figured they'd see about getting the husband to a doctor. The doctor saw & treated him (with no months long waiting list) and he was fine. But, the doctor said that had he waited like Canada wanted him to, he would not have survived.
So, this lady lost her daughter and almost lost her husband due to Universal Healthcare. And don't fool yourself into believing our government could do it better. Our government does very few things better.

Access to a waiting list is NOT access to healthcare!
And don't fool yourself. A waiting list is exactly what you'd get under Hillarycare. If Canada's healthcare system was so jolly good, why do so many of them come here to get lifesaving treatment instead of "waiting their turn" for months at home? There are even plenty of people from Europe that come here. There's now even a medical tourism industry with specific travel agencies just for people who need treatments!
For that matter, even non-lifesaving treatment takes months to get. Last I heard it was 15 months or so just to get a hip or knee replacement. That alone can affect your life to the point where you cannot function due to the pain. Making people in such excrutiating pain that they can't walk, wait over a year for treatment...such compassion.

We may not have a perfect system, but it's a hell of a lot better than that! I'd suggest you do your research. I've seen plenty of British people who are VERY unhappy with that system. Free healthcare is a misnomer. Somebody has to pay for it (WAY high taxes) and it might just cost you your life. And if you don't think it's possible, think about the waiting lists our veterans already have with the government healthcare in the VA.

I can't imagine how Hillary thinks she could "end the war" within a few days of taking office. That's just politico-speak (saying anything you want to get a vote). In reality, what that would do is leave the Iraqi people as sitting ducks for a hostile takeover causing many more deaths than has already occurred. It's just unrealistic and I don't think most people who want us to leave immediately understand what that would mean to the people over there.

And to be honest, if it's McCain vs. Hillary...I really don't think McCain would have much trouble beating her. Quite frankly, many of her former supporters are now supporting Obama. That should tell you something. She has pretty high negative numbers. Most people see her for the fraud she is (staying with Bill after he humiliated her with Monica proved that...and lying about snipers in Bosnia). No real feminist would stay with an abusive loser husband like that. She stayed with him for the power. And if it's not for the power, then she's a brow-beaten wimp with no self-respect.

1st: Government running military? The Iraq War hasn't gone so well until now. You wanna rethink that?
Courts, police & Coast Guard? Who else could do that? We don't really have a choice.

Other than that, look at Social Security. For that matter, have you not heard about the problems the Veterans Administration is having? They have a backlog of Veterans and can't get them medical treatment. If the federal government can't handle the medical treatment of our military, what makes you think they can do any better with the Average Joe? Again, not brainwashing, just paying attention to the news and actually thinking about what it could mean to me if I was the one subject to their "treatment"

The majority of the things the federal government tries to do, they can't. Remember the bridge that collapsed last year? Then we found out the majority of bridges in the United States are in disrepair and may not be safe to use. And let's not forget Katrina. Not only was the disaster flubbed up by all levels of government (starting with Chocolate City's Ray Nagin...idiot extraordinairre), but it all started with the Army Corps of Engineers who built the levy wrong in the first place.

So, you may have this deep faith in the federal government, but it's completely misguided. I work in the healthcare system as a biller. Medicare recipients have to get certain treatments & diagnostic procedures authorized. When I worked in ENT, one lady needed a PET Scan to check & make sure cancer hadn't spread. Medicare said no. The federal government is a big part of the problem with our healthcare system. They reject payments on services needed, and they deny certain procedures a patient needs. If you want to give the government power over your body and life like that, then by all means, move to Canada.
This isn't brainwashed Republican BS, this is real life experience.

2nd: The countries who DO have Universal Healthcare are having problems administrating it and granting healthcare to everyone. Some areas don't have enough doctors because of the constricting regulation by their government. Canada and Britain have severe problems.
And yes, our government is WAY to corrupt to handle something as important as healthcare.

Now, I assume you're in your 20s and not old enough to remember the early 90s when Hillary first tried to force government healthcare on us. If you paid attention then, you would know why it failed. She actually wanted to tell doctors where they could practice medicine! And, if you didn't like her form of medical care, too bad...you'd be in violation of the law if you tried to find a doctor & paid for it out of pocket. She wanted to do some scarey stuff.

3rd: Your argument that the dollar is falling because we lack socialized services is crap. We've had strong economies in the past without the nanny government and we'll have it again. The economy goes in cycles. Right now it's down. It will go back up again.
As for your barrels of oil... I'm not sure where you're getting those numbers, but it doesn't change the fact that in many places in Europe, they still pay $5 or more per gallon of gas. A lot of that is government regulation and taxes.

Funny, because I've talked to several who came to the States because, for a price, they could have life saving, or at least life altering, surgery far quicker than under their "superior" health care.

Get this: Under "Universal Healthcare" you're put on a waiting list for life saving surgery. You have to wait your turn, and then you get it done. For surgeries to deal with severely painful, even debillitating, problems you get to wait even longer. Months, even years, of waiting for them to get to you.

For a price, I can go out and schedule an appointment tomorrow to have my eyes fixed within a week.

I didn't read much of the posts in this thread because of all of the political debating involved, which usually leads nowhere, but I would like to add that I have really noticed over the past few months that there are very few negative Obama jokes, and many many more negative Hillary and McCain jokes.

I noticed specifically the other night, where one joke (sorry, can't remember the specifics) included a comment about all three candidates. The comment about Obama was that he was Hawaiin. The comments about Hillary and McCain were both very negative. This is just one example, but it is clear that the show's writers or Jay Leno himself are reluctant to say much negative about Obama.

I wish they would be a little more even in their negative jokes about the candidates. Otherwise, it starts to seem like the show is politically driven, and if I want to watch that, then I will flip over to the news channels and watch the talking heads.

I rarely watch Dave Letterman anymore for this very reason. He used to be my favorite, but I got tired of all of the political nonsense.

Obviously, he is not 'required by law' to be fair. However, if a comedy show is consistently blasting one candidate, while handling the other with kid gloves, then they run the risk of alienating nearly half of their audience. I have not stopped watching Jay as a result of this, but I definately watch a little less lately. This is also one reason that I prefer Conan over the others right now. He doesn't seem to have a political agenda like Jay is developing on his show, and Dave Letterman has shown for a long time.
