My YouTube :
http://youtube.com/JSouthTheSingerHI...I'm Judy. I've posted just a couple of times here on the boards, but I've been coming here almost every day to read the posts. I'm a children's musician-I write, perform and record original songs for kids and families-and I am auditioning on April 6 in NYC.
Since I'm now the ripe old age of 48 and have been writing songs since I was 11, I do want to say a word of encouragement to all the young musicians (and by that I mean everybody under 40!) who are out there reading this. As QUEENFISH and many others have said : NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER NEVER NEVER no matter how old you are or no matter how fat you get or what illnesses or money situations or family problems come your way.
I have been through so many things in my life but I have never lost sight of my dream to have a legacy in music. I used to just want to be famous when I was younger, but now that I'm older I care more about leaving something behind that will last for generations (like my idol Karen Carpenter did.) The image that has kept me going is envisioning myself at 97 and looking back on my life thinking: I didn't try hard enough. So keep trying! Take every avenue you can...AGT is a fantastic opportunity, but if it doesn't happen for you now you just have to keep looking for those other opportunities to get out there and let people hear your music. Sometimes you may come really, really close to something big and then it will slip away for one reason or another (I once didn't get a music job because the event producer said I needed to lose 30 pounds, and I was about 50 pounds lighter then than I am today! HA HA!)
THe simple fact is, if you really have the music in you, it will never let you go. And even when you think you're going to throw it all away and "get a real job" it will come back to you in some way you never imagined. When I was 20 and fronting a rock band I never imagined that 28 years later I'd be singing for children....but music has always pulled me back in one way or another.
So I'm going to audition even though I'm old and fat and have wrinkles and gray hair (which you will NEVER see!) because I told myself I would never give up...and now I want my children to see that I am never giving up. And if I don't get on the show I'll still come home and keep going to libraries and schools and fairs and singing for kids because it's who I am and what I love. And that's what being a musician is really all about.
Good luck to everybody here and look for me in NYC...I'll be the fat old lady with the twinkle in her eye; and hair that's not my real color.
