This same stupid statement has been made at almost every weigh-in for 5 seasons. Can't someone realize it's a dumb thing to say?

Example:

Ali (or what's her name) says: So Whoever, you lost Xlbs giving a percentage loss of Y% and I'm sorry to inform you that puts you below the yellow line and with only 1 contestant remaining to be weighed in you can not rise above it.

No one ever rises, it's impossible to rise no matter how many contestants are left. You get your initial position and the only way to go is down. Once you're below the yellow line, that's it, you're below the yellow line. What's the point of saying there's only one contestant left?

And while I'm ranting, why do they always say you need to lose more than X lbs to stay above the yellow line or whatever? I could see syaing you need more than 5 lbs if you could get 5.1 lbs but since you have to get 6 lbs why not just say they need to lose 6 lbs? What's up with that?
BugsyBoy
I think you're putting too much thought into it.

And you'll be this way until they have a new season. Get out more! =]

Maybe they do this for the people who have never watched the show before and therefore don't know about the rules and how things go (Just my guess anyway).

Well I think even with one more person to weigh in, then that last person could come in and shuffle the last 2 positions and bump the top one below the yellow up and out of the yellow zone or bump both the yellows up one notch and really place dead last. The only time you are without hope is if you are in dead last position.. With only 1 person to weigh in.. Someone has to get displaced.. but even if the remaining person to weigh in came in dead last they'd still bump the previous dead last person up a notch which is still below the yellow.

No, no one can ever be bumped up, only down. If the last to weigh in comes in last they just stay there as does everyone else. Once you're below the line, that's it, you're below the line. Your only hope is to not get pushed down to the bottom spot but it's impossible to get pushed up.

It all depends where you're counting from. For the half-full people who are third from the front and the half-empty people who are two from the back. Since those people are worried about being in the last two places, they can go 'up' - but only if you look at it the right (or wrong) way.

You can get pushed up. If there is one person left and you are below the yellow line (there are 2 positions) if the last person weighed in is below one of the two below the yellow line, then that person is now safe and the last person weighed is now in their spot, therefore, they got "pushed up". If thats not what you mean, then sorry I guess I dont understand what your saying, either way, Ali is just reading what shes supposed too, I am sure it get redundant to her also. She works on a soap opera, so I am sure she is used to it LOL Hope that helps.

I'm not blaming Ali, she is just reading her lines and would say anything if it was on her cue cards. I'm blaming whoever it is that directs what the cue cards say.

No, you can't get pushed up, once you're below the line that's it, you're below the line. If you're the 3rd to weigh-in and you've done the worst you're in 3rd place. No matter how many there are behind you to weigh-in you can't move up to 2nd because 2 people have already beaten you. People can do better than you and push you down but they can't push you up. Impossible. Once below the yellow line that's it and the only question is if you're the bottom or 2nd from the bottom.

I see what you are saying now.. The last spot (wherever it winds up) is never filled until the last person weighs in.. so there are never 2 below the yellow until all have been weighed. I was just looking at it wrong..

I'll be honest, I had to stop and think about that too. The last person can weigh in and push someone below the yellow line and take their spot, but they cannot push someone above the yellow line. I guess I never really gave much thought to her saying that. I just took it as part of the show.

Since you know what's coming and that it will irritate you, just plug your ears, close your eyes and sing "la la la la la" outloud.

Problem solved! wink.gif

I notice in TBL Australia they weigh to tenths of kilos or about a quarter pound. So they say you have to have lost at least X.Y kilos. Wish our show did that.

Here is where you messed up. If you're below the yellow line then there is only ONE person left to weigh in...period. Now if there are more people left to weigh in then there is this imaginary yellow line that is present in everyone's mind as they are watching the show. And you can rise above that line as people fall below you.

No, Skyflash IS right... I was thinking like you but if you think about it... noone actually falls below the yellow until the last 2 people are weighed.. If there is only 1 more to weigh in and 1 person below the yellow either the last person claims one of the 2 bottom positions or one of the upper positions forcing someone else below the yellow line. But I guess many of us do think of an imaginary yellow line as they go through the process.

The two bottom ones could fall below the yellow line assuming that the last 2 to weigh in have a higher weight loss than those two.

True... But some were pointing out and I was one of them, albeit wrongly... thinking that someone below the yellow could get bumped up and out of the danger zone. I finally realized the error of my thinking and I was most likely working from an imaginary yellow line 'viewpoint' with whomever were the 2 lowest at any given point.

Yep, once you're below the REAL yellow line there's no hope for you. Ali and her Australian counterpart AJ are bad about telling you the obvious.

Here is where I had to really think about it. Suppose there are six people left in the competition. Once four weigh in, all of them are above the yellow line. The next person to weigh in has their name displayed underneath the yellow line. If there percentage of weight lost is greater than someone above the yellow line, the positions shift and someone else is placed below the yellow line. If not, they stay there. The next person to weigh in is the same way. Their name is displayed below the yellow line at first. They can then rise above the yellow line if their percentage is higher than someone above the yellow line.

I don't really see that as "rising above the yellow line" because they were not "knocked" below the yellow line. That is just where their name would appear until their percentage of weight loss is known. I think that might be the only way we could see someone rise above. Once they are down there, they are down there. I guess I'm not sure why she says that every time. Maybe for people who are unfamiliar with the program?

So technically, someone CAN rise above the yellow line, but only if they were not knocked down there to begin with. The only way they can is if they are just weighing in and have a greater percentage loss than someone who weighed in before them.

You're talking about this "imaginary" yellow line. Once you're below the "actual" yellow line, theres no climbing out of that spot. All you're doing now is waiting for the next person to join you below the yellow line.
petersons14
No, I'm not thinking about an imaginary line. Once you are FORCED below the yellow line, you stay there. However, when you are about to weigh in, your name is PLACED below the yellow line. You either get to stay there or you bump someone else down and you move up. Their name is only below below because they do not know how much weight loss that person has yet. It's there as a temporary placement until they see what their actual percentage is. I was being diplomatic, saying that, yes, there is a way to raise above -- however ONLY if that person had not weighed in yet and they were waiting to see their actual percentage -- I think that is why some people are confused. Once a person is forced below the yellow line by the second to last person to weigh in, there is no hope.

When the first person weighs in, their name goes at the top. The next person goes below the first and then if that person has a better weight loss they then switch places. It goes from top to bottom creeping towards the yellow line. The last two to weigh in may have their name placed there momentarily as they shuffle the board.

My point exactly. That is why I'm thinking some are confused that people can "raise" above the yellow line. In a competition standpoint, no you can't. Once you are below, you are below.
