Full Version: Last Comic Standing Advice to the Finalists
NBC > NBC Extras > NBC Vault > Reality/Game Show Vault > Last Comic Standing
Wayne1975
We don't know who made it into the final 5 except for Marcus.

Regardless of who actually made it, what advice/suggestions would you give to each of the comedians that you think would better their chances of winning this season of Last Comic Standing?

Here are the comedians that are still competing:
-Sean Cullen
-Jeff Dye
-Ron G.
-Adam Hunter
-Marcus
-Louis Ramey
-Iliza Shlesinger
-Jim Tavaré

I thought I'd share my thoughts on this, so here is my advice/suggestions to the finalists (as if they actually were reading this forum):

Sean Cullen: We've seen a lot of weird and imaginative, comedic ideas come from you while you've been on the show. I hope that you continue to come up with more of those comedic surprises while you're on stage. My main suggestion is to not do a song while on stage... they're really hit or miss, and the songs pretty much take up all of your performance time.

Jeff Dye: There isn't too much for me to suggest besides continue what you've been doing. If possible, try to throw in more jokes with twists in them... such as when you were talking about homeless people and then said you thought "he" was homeless... the "he" turning out to be your father.

Ron G.: Don't do jokes where you do that weird thing where your voice cracks and gets a little whinny. Also, don't stay on the same topic for too long... at least if you do a short joke that isn't funny, you can move on to another joke, but if the joke is long (and doesn't go over well) it will take up all of your time and that's what the audience will remember.

Adam Hunter: Avoid the political/Bush jokes and the jokes that are on topics that really divide the country (e.g., gay marriage/adoption).

Marcus: Continue on with what you've been doing. Your impressions probably have been the strongest thing you've done on the show so far... just make sure to do impressions that you haven't done on the show before (the Christopher Walken impression is very good, but it is getting kind of stale).

Louis Ramey: Same thing as I suggested to Jeff Dye... continue what you've been doing.

Iliza Shlesinger: You've been on stage on the show a few times already, so avoid repeating the jokes you've already done on the show. Also, avoid the jokes where you're stomping around or doing weird stretching.

Jim Tavaré: So far, I've probably liked your stand-up the most out of this group of finalists. Unfortunately, the voters might be biased since you are from the UK, and your more-relaxed pace may count against you if the viewers are only interested in comedians that are a bit fast paced and loud. Still, I say keep doing what you've been doing all along because it is funny.

Wow, Wayne1975! Are you in my head? Those are the exact thoughts I have about each of the comedians. (So maybe they'll listen, huh? Right.)

Anyway, I might add for Marcus to tell more jokes. I enjoy his impressions tremendously, and they're definitely his strong suit and what sets him apart from the rest, but I'm wanting to hear jokes, too. Not just impressions. (It's Last Comic Standing, not Last Impressionist Standing. /soapbox.) So make sure to do that. He's done it in the past, but I think he needs to do it a bit more. (He can certainly still do it "in character".

Jeff: Well the suggestion has already been made that he wear better-fitting pants. For the sake of science, of course. smile.gif Other than that, just keep up the good work.

I can't think of any other suggestions, but if I do, I'll be sure to post them here.

(Great idea for a topic, btw.)

You never know if the LCS comedians are looking at this forum. If I was a stand-up comedian on the show, I'd want to know what the audience thought regardless if it was good or bad.

Audience feedback is important... if you watched season 1 of LCS, you might remember Dat Phan kept records of how well his jokes went over with the audiences... he then built his sets based on his strongest material. While I didn't feel he was the funniest person on the show that season, his research did end up paying off.

Marcus did combine jokes and impressions... hopefully, he can keep things distinct enough so things don't get like Pablo Francisco's "Previewman parody": http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZPBvFXf9Q2U All that counts is that what he does is unique and funny.

Sadly, I didn't start watching until Season 2. I missed out on so much, I know.

I know Marcus does jokes - I just don't remember any of them. That's not good, I think. I do remember Gilbert Gottfried's (sp?) voice though. My favorite is Captain Jack Sparrow, though. smile.gif

ETA: Just watched the Previewman clip. Funny stuff. Thanks.

Marcus and Ramey are the only true funny ones left...Iliza is decent.. Jeff Dye is not that good...he was VERY funny in the prop comedy, but thats about it... and the reason Marcus seems "old" with impressions, because he hasnt had a chance to perform! He has performed 2 times on the show - 1 to make it, and did impressions....and then his 2nd he didnt do 1 impression and his bit was hillarious..atleast to me bc I used to think Willy Wonka was a scary movie... and yet the "judges" didnt like it as well bc he didnt do any impressions...

Once he gets challenged, ...I should say...IF he gets challenged, the comedians will know who the best is...

Wayne1975 - Pretty dead on to what I would have said as well.

Wayne, I agree with everything you suggested for the comics to do, and I think they could benefit from reading your post. Good topic.
