Crews seems doesn't seem to hang to his rides for that long but I think you are referring to the last one he had, a Buick Regal Grand National. I believe that it was the 1987 model, the GNX, which was the last year they were made. Production was 1982, 1984-1987, no '83s were made. They were all black and fast as ****, a return to the muscle car era. Buick was getting heat from the GM brass because the Grand National, a 3.8 L Turbo V6, could smoke the Corvette so Buick decided to got out with a bang and make a special model for the final year of production. I think Buick made around 2,000 Gns in '87 but of those 2,000 547 of em were sent to McLaren which returned as the GNX, the X meaning Ultimate or Ultra etc. because McLaren put a bunch of sweet parts on them. The stock GN was already fast but the word around the campfire is that the GNX is still considered one of the fastest cars ever made. And they look so awesome. Reviews from the time liked to refer to it as "Darth Vader's staff car".
Your close but not exact, I have all the production #'s and info on these cars and have restored 2 and work on hundereds. I love these cars and was exited to see one on TV, the car he drived has the 84/85 style Grand National wheels on it, which are lighter then the steel chrome wheels found on the 86/87 Gn's.
Also it has an aftermarket front mount intercooler on it which cools the air charge of the turbo down more then the stock intercooler those 2 silver pipes are hanging down just below the front bumper are the tubing to and from the intercooler. The car is also missing the lower front air dams which hang below the front bumper which would bassically hide those pipes.
He drive's or drove a 1987 Regal with a (WE2) Grand National option package.
They made 20,193 Grand Nationals in 1987, 245 HP @ 4400 RPM, 355 ft-lbs of torque at 2000 RPM
They made 5,512 Grand Nationals in 1986, 235 HP @ 4000 RPM, 330 ft-lbs of torque at 2400 RPM
They made 547 GNX versions in 1987 and they were the Grand Nationals to end all Grand Nationals.
info taken from GNTtype.org
http://www.gnttype.org/general/product.htmlThe 84/85 or prior were all hot air cars (ie: no intercooler) and are less desirable over the 86/87 models.
I still have one of my cars a 87 GN, pic of it is in my avatar.
