Full Version: The McCoy Family

I found the McCoy family to be very interesting. I think they are going to have a great impact on the people of Dillon. I think this impact will be felt not only on the football field but all over town. I think that Mrs. McCoy is going to have more influence on Tami than anyone can imagine.

I think that Mrs. McCoy is trying her best to undercut Tami and Tami has no idea that this woman will stop at nothing to get what she wants.

i dont see it as under cutting as much as an eliteist (sp?) type attitude - popularity contest. I dont think she has any desire to run the school. As far as Mr. McCoy he isnt too over the top at all - there are parents like that all over the place in TExas, but can be found all over the country. The best example i can give are those little girl pageant mothers - living through their kid.

It will indeed be interesting to see how the town will react to them - considering the town is very much like that but not as flashy about it.

They needed strong, new characters like this to give the show depth. In a real situation, there would not be just one character like Buddy with all of the power. Generally, there is a political struggle between different strong minded parents and community members. It will be interesting to observe Mr. McCoy's relationship with Buddy.

J.D. is the fresh, new star of the show. They key with him is not put him in corny, fake situations. His character needs to be consistent and have a constitution that doesn't change because a writer has a pet idea. That means no hosting a Christian Radio show out of nowhere. His character should change with age though, as he gains more confidence and ego based on his football abilities.

I don't think much about the mother, other than that they should keep her as a likable person. She fits the sweetheart wife of the overzealous father better than the snobby, rich wife.

I will have to say that I agree with you about this family. I think my point in pulling this family out, by themselves, is based on JD. He is a wonderful QB. He loves his parents and he wants to fit in with the
guys. I know it will be hard for him because he isn't just a good athlete, he is wealthy. That could really put him in bind. I think his dad may prove to be the driving force behind this young man. This "force" could end up being in his best interest or it could actually drive him away by the time he gets to 12th grade.
I will say that I appreciated how he took "it" like a man and did what was asked of him. Sometimes kids don't understand that as long as "big" brothers don't ask you to do something that could kill you or something that breaks the law, this type of activity helps to bond the team. They have to bond. They have to trust each other and JD showed them all that he had the power to hang in there and actually be a member of the football team.

I'm sorry about the double post but I wanted to address the fact that Tim became a radio host and keeping JD true to character.

I think that is part of the problem with some of the conversations that are full of disagreement is based on the fact that we, viewers, have to understand that the writers have to make the characters grow, as you said. I did not find it out of the blue for Tim to go to the radio station and start his own show. You have to remember that Tim had pulled out all of the stops to get himself in Lyla's head. She was working at the station so he decided to do the same. He was way over the top with his desire to get her attention. With JD, I don't think he is going to continue to be "boy" his father is so proud of. He is going to have to put his feet in the water and it may burn. He is going to have to do things that a totally focused guy would never do. If the show stays on long enough, it will be interesting to see what "out" of character antics JD will display.

I think for me, what was refreshing about JD was the fact that even though he is such a good QB and good talent, he doesnt have the stereotypical and overused arrogant, all-american QB personality. He fits every stereotype - wealthy parents, great QB etc. but then you see a down to earth & nice guy. I hope he grows up but still keeps that same attitude....

I could be wrong here and I hope I am but I am seeing some really dark clouds when it comes to JD and his dad. JD's dad is really the kind of person you don't want to know. He is way too involved in his son's life and he is nasty with it too. I can see several roads this could lead us to but none of them are good roads. JD is not your "jumpy" or arrogant athelete but he is a nerveous one. He is so afraid of making his daddy unhappy. This is going to be a very strange story to follow.

I think JD is a nice kid. I think he wants to please his dad. He is the "apple" of his mother's eye. I don't think he is a mean boy at all. The person to watch here is Joe McCoy. Joe is the kind of person who will go to any end to get what he wants. JD seems very well mannered and he seems to want to please the people around him. He is not a street wise kid and this could prove to be his downfall. Joe will spread his money around if it means he can get his way. I don't know why it is so important for JD to be the QB during his first year of high school. Maybe they will bring that out to us later. This push, this drive, to put JD ahead at all cost does not make sense. It is almost like he is living through JD. Maybe it is all about control. Maybe he wants to control his family and control the entire town. I just see darkness when it comes to this family.
BigRiggs33
Very controling Joe Mccoy has to have it his way or no way and will stop at nothing to control the town of Dillon. Just remember what comes around goes around and that no good for nothing Joe Mccoy has it coming...

I agree that the McCoy family is interesting, a great addition to the show - all three actors, D.W. Moffett, Jeremy Sumpter and Janine Turner do a masterful job. I don't think Mrs. McCoy will try to undercut Tami. I think they are legimately friends, and Tami needs a friend!

I hope to see more of Katie McCoy in season four. After watching the entire season on Direct TV, I felt her character was not as developed as it could have been, both within the McCoy family and her friendship with Tami. In the second to last episode we see great tension between Tami and Katie - do they work it out? Does Katie realize the Taylors were right?

Janine Turner still lights up a screen as much as she did in Northern Exposure! Here's hoping we see more of her in Season Four!

Folks, please be careful about posting any spoiler info. There are millions out there who have not seen this season so let's not spoil the fun for them.

Thanks!

I really love the addition of the McCoys. I think they've brought a fresh new energy to the show, and I love both the actors. DW Moffett and Janine Turner are both such a joy to watch. I hope we see a lot more of them.

I read on another message board that the McCoy family is loosely based off of a real life promising football prospect who turned out to be a big bust for whatever reason (can't remember the name). He was like built or raised to be the perfect athlete, with a strict diet, intense training, and a lot of pressure from his dad, sort of like JD McCoy and his family is being portrayed. Does anyone know the guy I'm talking about?

I for one will stop watching if Saracen is not QB 1. I know that is stupid and I know its selfish but I am a huge Matt Saracen fan. I love that he is the underdog but still wins games. He is tough and fights for his spot. We need to kill of JD McCoy...let him get hit by a truck or something.

Are you with me!
painterswife97
I won't go so far as to not watch anymore but I do think it's wrong that coach is playing McCoy instead of Matt. Matt is a senior and J.D. is just a freshmen who has 3 more years to prove himself.

The player that you are referring to is named Todd Marinavich and he played at USC. He never really made it in the NFL after much hype growing up.

When I started this thread I did not know one thing about the McCoy family. I just had a bad feeling about them. Now that I have seen the daddy in action,I totally understand why JD is so uptight.

For some reason, I think Joe has hit his family before. The wife won't admit to it but I do think he has done some harm to someone. They both, mom and son, do their best to keep him happy. I understand about the money and how rich he actually is but this is more than that. They seem so scared. What has he done before now to put his family in such a state?

Again, please be careful about posting any spoiler info. You can add spoiler tags if you must post something now or you can wait till the episode you want to talk about actually airs on NBC.

Ya know. . . I am startin' to really like Katie McCoy. She Loves that Boy of hers. . Dearly. And Knows that Joe is too hard on him. And tries her level best to keep the peace in her family. And wants so desprately for him to have normal happy childhood. Which is nearly impossible with Joe around trying to undo or stop any normal activities JD might have. Like a girlfriend and friends. Thank goodness Joe doesn't know about the influence Tim has on JD. Especially with girls. No doubt Joe would have a fit the size of Texas if he did. All he wants that boy to do is Hunker Down on football and homework. If you haven't seen the Bonus Scene with the McCoy's take a look. Cuz, you can see the family dynamic in action. And what Katie is up against.

Hi, I really like this new family. They are a great addition to the town of Dillion, TX. Katie seems like the All-American mother. She wants to be involved in the community and is friends with Tami. I like her! Now Joe is a different story. He lives through his son JD and it's scary how much he expects of JD. I thought last weeks episode was brilliant. I thought when we first met Joe and how controlling he was that it would be a problem. I am watching this season for the first time and can't wait till Friday night. I'm so thrilled to know that this great show has been picked up for 2 more seasons!!! I look forward to see how this family is explored in new stories.
barnabus_c2005
should be interesting to see how this family plays out in Dillon.
