THE OFFICE
THE SURPLUS
12-04-2008 9:00PM
SURPLUS SPENDING AT THE OFFICE--Oscar informs Michael that the office must spend a $4300 surplus or lose it in next year's budget. When Michael opens up the floor for suggestions, factions break out and officemates square off against one another in order to get what they want. Meanwhile, Dwight takes Angela and Andy to Schrute Farms to work on their wedding plans.
Okay, what exactly do you think Dwight has planned?
Please remember to keep discussion of the episode in this thread only, until 12:30 Eastern when the show will be finishing up on the West Coast.

Oscar seems to be the only one who can really explain financial things to Michael (at least we know it's possible).

I have a feeling Angela will forgive Dwight, play up the victimization card with Andy, but then refuse to get an annulment/divorce because she's sticking to her principles.
Or maybe not.
Edit: And I love that Oscar kept the information about the bonus from Michael. "Do you know?"

Toby was talking about how asbestos is a silent killer and Michael said that Toby was the silent killer.

Yep. I knew what he was doing and I was thinking, please don't.
My favorite line was when Oscar was explaining it to Michael like he was a 5 year old and then Oscar said "Next summer..." and Michael said "I'll be six".
That is too funny because that is EXACTLY what a five year old would say!

Id rather have a new copier or new chairs rather than $640, I mean, $640 out of 4,400 (or w/e it was), is not a lot. 1,000 and I would take it though

One of the worst office episodes ever!
I can't begin to explain how wrong that whole german wedding was...I AM SICK TO DEATH of Andy being portrayed as a fool.
And Michael shaking his butt at Pam...just wrong. The tag was the only thing that saved it a little but I am very disappointed with everything in this episode. I sure hope the Christmas episode is a homerun because this has left a bitter taste in my mouth.
I'll watch it again tomorrow morning but I don't think it's gonna get much better...this was like every other sitcom charcters are sacrificed for cheap laughs...horrible

Me too. I know enough German to understand what the "very cloistered" minister was saying.

Angela isn't going to like that one bit.
I thought the Shrute Farms scenes were the best. Andy stepping in a cowpie, Mose hitting Andy in the head, Dwight taking them to the churchlike barn, etc. Oh, and the pretty horse in the background.

Yes. I love Michael and Oscar scenes. It was like the scene in Money where all Michael can focus on is the diagram, the fact that is has his name on it, and the fact that he used Power Point and completely misses the significance of the scary black bar.

Interesting how Meredith and Creed cheered Jim on for not backing down to Pam...but even when they aren't playing on the same team they are still so great together even when Jim pranks Pam at the end.
If there was any question about Jim being spineless when it came to Pam we got our answer.

There was that at least. I hope I like this more upon reviewing but that whole wedding threw me for a loop. And If it's to be believable it set Dwight And Angela back at least a year which leaves Andy hung out to dry.

A good way to end the surplus war.
To me, some of the surplus discussion scenes seemed a bit overdone and almost cartoonish. When Michael came back from lunch with Jim and Oscar it reminded me of some budget wars I've had in the past. I knew things were lost with that "laugh of togetherness." May have struck too close to home, and for a change, I liked the out of The Office scenes better in this episode.

And, it's classic that the copier was acting up while Pam was campaigning for new chairs ....

something like, "I made a mistake, 4 copies"... because he originally asked for 3 copies of each and then said he was kidding, he would make his own copies but comes back and asks for 4...that's what left Pam stunned.

A new subplot emerges: which character is the most despicable? Dwight or Ryan?
Dwight's conduct this season has been disgraceful, but this is a new low.
I don't know how he could stand to look in the mirror.
Rest of the episode sucked, although at least it wasn't as bad as Blame Toby.

Wow. What an episode. I think that it's still possible that Angela will forgive Dwight. They were so close to getting back together!! And she admitted that marrying Andy was a mistake and that being at the altar with Dwight just felt right. But, I still don't know though. It'll take a second and third viewing to make a final conclusion about the whole thing. I actually have a couple of theories about multiple Dwangela things that occurred in this episode, so I'll post those in DC as soon as I'm allowed to.
