No, that's not the first time they met. There's an earlier scene of them shaking hands but they can't use it because Josh Taylor is in it (Chris Kostichek). Check out 86jams on youtube and you'll see their story from the beginning. That scene was where Marlena was showing John the loft cuz he needed a place to stay. Then he asked her out. Then Chris ruined the date by butting in and John ran away because of memory he had.

I think someone had a date on a banner 1-29-86.. what does that date mean? and yesterday's scene was it when he started therapy.

Not really sure what 1/29/86 is. I know that Drake's first taping was before that and his first airdate was before that as well. And they weren't married until August. So that may be the date of when they actually met each other.
