I don't really fully understand what the ability was, it had to be more than just writing like that; why else would Sylar make the effort of killing him and taking the power for himself?

The power of MAGIC ink! I bet it also helped him get through all those collage essays and reports. No more cramping hand! And that's it's mundane use, imagine it's offensive capabilities. You could run around giving all the kids in the city tattoos, make people blind by writing on their eyes, or give the ultimate insult by writing "FAIL" or "LOSER" on their foreheads.

The possibilities are nearly endless for the creative.
