I might be a loose woman, but with exercise, I am sure I will lose weight.

Let's all try to use loose/lose in a sentence.

At the very least, let's all try to spell the word we want to use correctly.
Kel_Bel
ah someone after my own communcation arts teaching heart
Ginny_O
Pet peeve for me too, though it does make me laugh. I always have this image of all that loose weight, floating in the air, just waiting for somebody to pass by so it can attach itself to a new person, who will then lose it and loose it again to attach itself to somebody else.

I'm afraid you're probably fighting a losing battle (pun definitely intended). LOL!

Uh oh, I'm pretty sure I've been using the incorrect spelling! I'm not the best in that department but what really bugs me is mixing up your/you're and its/it's... Everyone has their thing, I guess!
Sammm
Saw a great saying on a t-shirt: "I am the grammarian about whom your mother warned you." LOL I also hate it when people mix up lose/loose. LOSE is a verb; LOOSE is an adjective. It's not called "The Biggest Looser"!!
Jazzgod
I chuckled when I saw the topic. I laughed when I read that first sentence. Its all too true. Its one thing to use mix up to and too, or their, there, and they're when you typing in a hurry, but seriously, its not event the right word.

Well, in a way it COULD be The Biggest Looser toward the end of the season.......
Kel_Bel
^^ true that loose skin hanging is one reason I can't wait til they get to the shirt on weigh-ins later in the season

Using it in a sentence:
I want to LOSE weight, so my clothing will be LOOSE.

This is one of my pet peeves as well. Here is a favorite of mine from this season: Filipe = Philipay = Flippie

And the perennial favorite: Jillian = Jullian

Oh, I almost forgot: weight = wait = wate

waist = waste
Kel_Bel

I hear you on the loose/lose! Totally annoying.

The term that makes me cringe *more than anything* is "Eat Healthy".
"I am starting to eat healthy"
"I want to eat healthy"
"Can someone tell me how to eat healthy?"
"Eating healthy is important"

These are all wrong - you cannot "eat healthy", yet this term is constantly repeated throughout all forms of media. This issue is the use of an adjective in place of an adverb.

Healthy is an adjective. It’s correct to say “You should eat healthy foods” or “everyone should follow a healthy diet.” Foods and diet are nouns, and nouns take adjectives.

However, it’s not correct to say “Everyone should eat healthy” or “I try to eat healthy.” Eat is a verb, and verbs take adverbs.

“I eat healthfully” or “I try to live healthily” are correct. Healthfully and healthily are adverbs, and eat and live are verbs.

Just sayin.

vbarkley
"I want to eat food that is full of health." biggrin.gif

I love FireFox - it has spell check, but sadly, that will not help people who are grammatically challenged.
Brooke
Yeah, the loose/lose thing bugs me too, and especially since the title of our favorite program is The Biggest Loser. One O!! Right there in front of us all over this website.

When I see loose, I pronounce it loose in my mind and it really bugs me!

Brooke
One thing I do that bugs me, but I never notice I've done it until it is too late to edit, is that I will mean to write "so" and I typo and write "to".

In all these cases, if I were to write "to," the correct spelling would have been "too."

Example:

I was running so fast down the street.

My typo version:

I was running to fast down the street.

I always feel like such a dummy later when I re-read I've done that, and I seem to do it every time!
Sammm
I used to do some editing too. My computer monitor is all marked up with my red pencil.... LOL

"Flippie"??? Seriously? **shakes head, bites lip**

Well, I'm sure I've done the Flippie. Or, probably Flipie. But, that is a typo. Not that I think his name is spelled that way. Sometimes these misspellings are typos.

Oh, definitely. But I about fell out of my chair the day I saw Shinie.

Oh, and the other one the bothers me a lot is when someone types alot.

And then there's the moot point that can't speak and therefore becomes a mute point.

moonwind - did someone really spell Sione's name Shinie? rolling.gif

Thank you! I think the same thing every time I read this board. The show is calle The Biggest Loser NOT The Biggest Looser. lol. I think, when it's part of the title, we should be able to use the word correctly.

Well definitely I agree with that. Like Jullian or, as titled, loose.

I can't figure out the Jullian thing, since that doesn't even look like the same word. I have never ever heard anyone call her Jullian. I mean, how does "Joolian" sound like "Jillian?"

I admit that bugs me big time.

I agree. I am always seeing people not use those words properly. I have a couple of friends who take great pride in their vast knowledge. One even brags on her kids being a genius. Another friend brags on her son the scholar yet I am always seeing their posts on facebook and their blogs using these words the wrong way.

My pants will not be loose if I do not lose weight.

Reading the word "loose" instead of "lose" is a pet peeve for me, too. Another one is the expression: "couldn't care less" which is the correct way of saying that you care so little, it's impossible to care less. My ears perk up like a dog receiving a treat when I hear it said correctly. Unfortunately, I usually hear "could care less" which means that you DO care, so it's possible to care less.

That is sooooooo funny ....that is the one I correct all the time!!!!! "I couldn't care less" is actually correct - if you could care less then that means you care to some degree which is not what you want to express - you want the person to know that there is no caring there whatsoever...therefore you "couldn't care less". Right?

That's the same thing with Jillian's name. It's all over the place here but some people never learn. I am no one to complain about spelling though.

One thing that does bug me is people mixing up affect/effect. Don't know why it does, but it does.

Can you eat funny?

Okay I know I'm guilty of this one --- but in my defense when I tell someone their point is moot - I like saying it is mute - as in not saying anything...either way - it says your point says nothing to me!! tongue.gif

I will fairly admit i am not an English/grammar whiz ---- I was taking physics, trig, calculus while my friends were taking advanced English --- I'm more of a math/science person - and I can name every bone in the body - I just may not be able to pronounce or spell them!! wink.gif

I haven't commented on this post before but after seeing that sign in the audience I could not help but think of this thread. I cringed then I started laughing because you guys were spot on for this one! Didn't anyone proof read that sign? It stuck out like a sore thumb. I think the camera guy was trying to avoid it after a while but just couldn't.
