Jesse L. Martin

as Philip Maidstone

Jesse L. Martin (NBC's "Law & Order") plays Philip Maidstone, Teddy Rist’s business partner and long-time friend on NBC’s new drama series "The Philanthropist."

An accomplished actor and singer who has already made his mark in theater, television and film, Martin continues to establish himself by constantly bringing a winning combination of indelible charm, charisma and intensity to his roles.

Among his feature films, Martin can next be seen in the soon-to-be-released features "The Cake Eaters," "Peter and Vandy" and "Buffalo Bushido." In 2005, he reprised his role of Thomas B. "Tom" Collins in the film adaptation of Jonathan Larson's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning musical "Rent." Martin originated the role in the off-Broadway production at the New York Theatre Workshop and carried it through to the Broadway production.

Martin’s notable television credits include completing seven seasons as the compulsive and passionate Detective Edward Green on the perennial NBC hit "Law & Order." He received multiple SAG nominations (Ensemble) and Image Awards nominations (Outstanding Actor) for his work on the show.

Martin also earned critical acclaim for his recurring role on "Ally McBeal" as Ally's boyfriend, Dr. Greg Butters. Additional television credits include: a guest-starring role as a disenfranchised alien on "The X-Files" (episode written and directed by David Duchovny); a series regular on the series "413 Hope Street"; a guest-starring role on the Wolf Films/Studios USA series "New York Undercover"; and the television movie "Deep in My Heart," co-starring opposite Anne Bancroft and Gloria Reuben.

In addition, Martin's previous film credits include "Season of Youth" and the independent feature "The Restaurant," where he performed alongside Adrien Brody, Elise Neal and Lauryn Hill.

Among Martin's extensive New York theater credits are such productions as "Timon of Athens" and "The Inspector General" (National Actors Theatre); "I Ain’t Yo Uncle" (Hartford Stage); "Rock ‘n’ Roles From WM Shakespeare" (Actors Theatre of Louisville); "The Butcher’s Daughter" (Cleveland Playhouse); "Romeo & Juliet" (Acting Company Tour); and "Two Gentlemen of Verona" (Arena Stage).

A graduate of New York University and a classically trained stage actor, Martin currently resides in Manhattan.

Could anyone tell me what the glasses frames are that Mr. Martin wears?

So glad to see Mr. Martin back on TV - L&O is not the same without Ed Green! Big mistake!

Question - why is Mr. Martin credited as "Special Guest Star" each week rather than listed with the other main characters? From what I've seen in each episode, his character is as key, if not more so, than some of the others. So, why the different opening credit? Just curious.
