I love this show - funny, smart, enjoyable, great acting, great writing, high production value.

It will never survive.

It doesn't fit the mold - it's not about cops, firemen, paramedics, lawyers or doctors. NBC has proven they don't care about quality TV - they have canceled or toyed with canceling several excellent shows like Kings, Chuck, Friday Night Lights and Life (cop show but wrapped in a larger mystery).

I give it 4 more episodes before NBC cancels it.

Is this going to be another network show that gets us all interested and excited and then just stops, no ending no nothing just leaving us hanging? It seems to be the trend with the networks as we have seen with:

Bionic women
Journeyman
Sarah Connors
Firefly
New Amsterdam

Just to name a few.

I’m about ready to stop watching network TV and stay with Sci-Fi, A&E and some of the other pay channels. At least they run and show for a season and produce an ending before they cancel it, for the most part.

It is refreshing to see a program like The Philantrophist. Excellent. Let's just hope it sticks around.
All the interesting, out of the box, programs seem to dissapear from tv only to be replaced by reality tv shows. Really.
Please NBC let it run for a while.
I'll sure tell all my friends to watch it--they will enjoy it just as much as I did.

I am hoping that NBC will give the show another season. How do we rally the troups and make sure that the Philanthoropist returns again with the incredible James Purefoy at the helm.

Hello, All. My name's Jack

Just wanted to PLEAD with anyone at NBC who'll listen; please keep this show!! The last thing we need as a collective TV-watching community is yet another friggin' reality show! There are plenty (if not more than enough). I realize the scripted drama has a short life span onm your network (hence why you're putting Jay Leno on every night @ 10) I know it's cheaper and all that. But come on! You got a great show here. Don't cut it loose. And if you do, let some other network pick it up. Don't be greedy. ;-)

Oh...and what's with an 8-episode season?!?! Does anyone remember when a season consisted of at least 22 episodes? I'd even settle for 12 (which is what most shows on channels like HBO, SHO, etc. are like).

Ultimately, I wanna say I love this show, and its cast. I would like to see it succeed, and I'd like it's network to throw its support behind it.

Good Evening,

As an avid fan of the program, I was shocked and disappointed to hear cancellation rumors floating about.

In a world full of mediocre sitcoms, boring dramas, and ridiculous reality shows, it’s quite refreshing to find a show that’s smart, sexy and entertaining.

Kudos to NBC for having the guts to air the show. My hope is that it will be given the same amount of time to flourish as "30 Rock".

Regards

Hi Everyone,

What! They are already planning on cancelling excellent show! Are they mad! Please let's not let this show die. This is an amazing show tackling deep issues. It is an intelligent show. Cudos to all those involved to get this off the ground. It could not have been easy hiring the cast(s) & filming in all those regions (assuming shooting was on site).
James, in his usual fashion, is irresistible in this role. Very authentic.
It is sad that indiscriminate shock value sells yet when a show that has meaning and touches us is allowed to whither away. What does that say about the tv viewer? Sad.

Please give this show a chance and keep it alive. It is worth keeping juxtaposed wiht the contrived reality shows. Cheers!

I really hope that NBC is not in the midst of canceling this show. The Philanthropist is the only show I watch on this network. Now that Medium has moved to CBS, if you cancel this great show I will no longer watch any programming on this network. My husband and I looked forward to Wednesday evenings to see what great adventure the show will take us. It is so sad that networks do not give shows time to gain momentum and a following. I really hope that NBC gives The Philanthropist another chance!

Now that the final episode has aired, is the any word on whether or not NBC will rerun the episodes, if more episodes will be made, or if the eight episodes will become available on DVD?
vhherrin
Why isn't this show on your schedule? So few network shows hold my interest and now it appears you had removed the show.

NBC finally has a show worth watching...Please keep it on. Maybe it can go to TNT. It has the best dramas on basic cable. Any network that has jay leno 5 nights a week at 10 eastern needs a transplant---maybe a new heart or a new creative center
silkworm
Hi it's silkworm with the simple questions. biggrin.gif
When do the new philanthropist episodes start?
And what is it about? I seen the Haiti episode it was great.
Thank you.
AzizalSaqr
The first season ended two weeks ago, no announcement has yet been made on when it will return for a second season.
southfloridakempster
My husband and I finally find a show we like and it wasn't on last week or tonight. After reading this forum I'm suspecting the season is over and the show cancelled sad01.gif

We really liked the show. I hope NBC reconsiders and puts it back on the air!
swr88
What is with you NBC? You finally put a really good, interesting, educational show with some meaning and it looks like your cutting it. This is one of your best shows ever in a long time. I liked law & order but you dragged that on forever until I just couldn't watch it any more. I hope you will keep this show going. Get rid of Law & Order and keep the Philanthropist on!

I truly hope this show will get the chance to further develop. Yes there are flaws, but all shows have them--I hope the network gives it more than 8 episodes (and markets it better!) to develop. The characters are fascinating, the acting is so superior to the average prime time hit, and the writing is solid and inventive (even if not fully accurate, I know, I know). I started out skeptical, wondering if it would be a white man's burden show, yet they've acknowledged these things and somehow pushed past all that beautifully in my opinion.

I loved how this short season ended, with the challenge--what will we do with what we've been given? Doesn't matter if we're rich, ignorant, and smart like the people in the room, or are something altogether different. There's something we can learn how to give--it won't always be straight-forward (I love how they have acknowledged all the things that go wrong when trying to learn), but trying and failing or bungling and learning is always better than not caring and doing nothing. I also appreciated how they deal with that fine line between interferring and helping. So many good things to discuss and think about...and still entertaining!!!

Please, NBC big kahunas, give this a chance past 8 midseason replacement episodes. Don't give it the Kings treatment. Not all of us want another hospital drama or the 300th CSI.
TheRebull
I love this show! The acting is incredible, the cinematography spectacular (love all the shooting in and around Cape Town for many episodes), and the message powerful. Please do not cancel this show - it's the best thing to happen on television in a long time!

It would be wonderful and heartwarming if this amazing series could run to a full season.

I agree with so many on here... all shows on basic air channels are all the same! I don't want to see another Reality show!! And though I love Law and Order, I would like to see something different! Everything is all cops/ detectives or reality! I loved Medium, Philanthropist, Journeyman and The Listener.. all dropped. LAME! Makes me not want to watch anymore new shows.. because I end up loving them but then they get canceled. At least have a finale that closes the show that is ready just in case the show is dropped! Don't just leave us all hanging! The way The Listener ended.. I couldn't wait to see future shows.. but, I won't. It's just so annoying. You would think the producers could create a backup finale show just in case it is dropped.. ya know?

Anyway.. I will hope that Philanthropist and Listener return.. though I doubt they will. At least another network picked up Medium! NBC loses my ratings on Tuesday nights and starting the 14th, they will lose me at 10 each night when Leno returns. EVERY night, are you serious? This show should only claim one night.. his show is blocking out that 10pm time slot that used to be occupied with GREAT shows.

Boooo on NBC

Wanted to know when the new season of The Philantropist will begin.
My family (all women by the way) are starting to know the lines of all past shows by hard--we keep hitting the play on the dvr.

We can't wait for new shows.

PLEASE PLEASE bring back this show. The education it provides and deviation from the normal TV schedule is incredibile. Is there a place we can send our opinions and wishes to and hope someone responsible for continuing this show will listen?
Certainly NBC must care what some of its viewers wish.
Please send and email or address I can write to and ask, beg, to have this show continued next season.

I rarely post comments on boards however The Philanthropist is such a fantastic show I have to speak up! Intelligent, inspirational, thought provoking, humanistic, and global. I love how this show exposes the American public to real life living situations around the world. We cannot stick our heads in the sand and think of the U.S. as the center of the universe. Thanks to the internet it has flatten the playing field to the rest of the world. There is a statistic like 80% of the world's wealth lie in 20% of the global population. The Teddy Rist character is a great example of what an impact one person can make. Imagine how the tide would change and a better place this world would be when everyone takes a stand for humanity and helps a stranger.

Please please please bring The Philanthropist back for the fall. This is such a FIRST RATE QUALITY show!!!

Aryadne
I just read an article about The Jay Leno Show in the New York Times and it mentioned that The Philanthropist was canceled. Is this true? PLEASE, tell me they got it wrong.

Once again NBC has decided to cancel a program that was in fact entertaining and pure. Instead we will be bombarded by shows that have crack heads vying for the love of a has been,or another show about doctors.Wake up NBC

my wife read this and said our daughters just starting watching the show, and now its cancelled.Chock one up to the polls that have lead us since the dawn of politics.(maybe thats how we got into this recession....)

I just read that the Philanthropist is being cancelled?
First Kings now this.
What do we have to do for NBC to keep intelligent shows on?

In my house, we are all counting the days for the new season. Not seeing promos is scary.

Are we going to have to resort to only CABLE shows.

The main stream networks don't seem to care about viewers that want to see new, fresh, intelligent shows.

Don't disappoint us NBC.

When is Teddy Rist coming back?

shame on you NBC. Shame on you.
urbangirl317
this is ( or should I say was) the best show on TV. Who makes these horrid decisions and why take away a show with such depth and great acting while leaving on other trash.

makes me so mad - these high execs always cancel the wrong shows.

I don't watch much TV these days, and now with this show gone, i will watch even less.

too bad.

Really poor decision on your part NBC whoever you are.

Alia24
Amazing how The Philanthropist get axed but we get Mercy.........
I mean we finally got rid of ER, which was a good show for the first 500 seasons but by the 524th season it was on way too long... I mean good God how long was it on for?

This show needs to be on tv, GOD I love James Purefoy (Rome he was so good in Rome)

Do what other shows did and hit to the cable networks at least they know how market, create buzz, put a huge push and stand by their shows.

Great shows NOT on ABC, CBS or NBC

Burn Notice
In Plain Sight
The Cleaner
Rescue Me
Leverage
and i cant forget
its always sunny in Philadelphia

So take the show go to USA TNT or A&E and find a home because NBC aired this show at the worst time of the year (summertime) and expects that everyone is watching TV shows like they would be in the fall.

Programming 101 September = new fall shows!! News seasons!!

If this show was on the fall schedule along with Mercy then im sure the ratings would have been much different, dont kill a show because the rating went down during the summertime, also everyone knows July & August is when everyone goes on vacation & enjoying the weather ! Not all of us have summer like weather 12 months a year like LA, these Network VP'S needs to get their heads out of their asses and stand behind this show and find a time to bring it back.

so sick of NBC canceling good shows
abaddame
I couldn't agree more with you Alia24. This show should be picked up by a network that respects their viewer's intellect and doesn't stick to the "commercial formula of program scheduling".
A network that appreciates their viewers loyalty and does not discriminate against those of us that want substance in a show.
Lets hope it gets picked up by A&E, USA, TNT, Lifetime. One that will give this show the change it deserves. In the season and time slot it deserves.(Not in the middle of the Summer without promoting it, etc. etc.).
I know that every single person that I've recommended the show to and has viewed it on the web (because most of them had not heard about it because they were in the middle of vacation), loved the show and keep on asking me if I have news about it.
As I said before: "shame on you NBC"

Aryadne
So is the show officially canceled or what? Can anyone at NBC answer this question?
rcjen
Great show and have watched all episodes but now hear it is canceled! What a shame NBC!
vbarkley
It's in The Vault. I guess that answers our questions on whether or not it is coming back.
tafrance
The networks have lost their way. They do not know what people want to watch. They move show time slots around to the point you don't know when a show airs. At least you can watch on line. The Philanthropist was a pretty good program. They will probably replace it "Under water basket weaving with the stars of law and order on a deserted island" but it will be canceled before anybody completes their basket. Ice T will be voted off for whining that someone stole his basket.
tokeybear60
This show is a breath of fresh air and gives use something fun and interesting to watch. Don't you think we see enough about crime and illness in the news, without having to watch 20 shows a week showing us more? Don't get me wrong I like some of these shows, but don't want to only watch them. If there is time to save The Philanthropist, please do!!!!
kitcat687
PLEASE keep this show on the air. This is the first show that I can truly say I love in a very long time. Everyone that I have told to watch this show love it as well. Not only is it entertaining but it is a show that cares about the world and makes people think.

AWESOME show!!!!

does anybody know if NBC got their programming right and are bringing back The Philanthropist?
Please think about us.

The show has been officially canceled (http://www.imdb.com/news/ni1104854/).

However, I read about a cause on Facebook that there are some fans that are trying to get NBC to change their minds. Here's the link if anyone is interested: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/380724

really hope they take away the cancellation =/

The Philanthropist is the BEST SHOW on TV ever. Please be sure to continue this program. With all the reality junk on tv today, it is very refreshing to have such a program that just might get people to think about global issues. Also, it just may encourage people to think about how they actually can do something to make things better. In todays world, we need this program. Please continue it.

Since The Philanthropist was canceled 3 weeks ago, a group of us fans have been working on putting a cause together on Facebook to encourage NBC to reconsider their decision to cancel the show. We've developed a strong core group but we really need help spreading the word. We're looking for new members who would be willing to spend a few minutes a day chatting up our cause on various forums and news sites around the web.

In the spirit of the show, one of our goals is to raise money for Human Rights Watch. As a result, our cause has been picked up by a couple of very prominent philanthropy blogs (Tactical Philanthropy: they tweeted us and posted our cause in their Daily Digest; and PhilanTopic [blog of The Foundation Center]: the author endorsed us http://pndblog.typepad.com/pndblog/2009/10...going-gone.html).

We have some great ideas in the works and would appreciate any support any of you fans have to offer. Please check out our cause site at: http://apps.facebook.com/causes/380724

Thanks,
Deborah Brancheau & Tamara Rudorfer

P.S. In case anyone is interested, Bobby Sager has a new book out called The Power of the Invisible Sun. A collection of his photos. You can purchase the book at http://www.poweroftheinvisiblesun.com/ and the proceeds go to putting "indestructible soccer balls into the hands of kids in the most difficult places around the world." This has nothing to do with our cause but it's just as important.
