Infamous Moments

From SNLWiki

There have been many "infamous" moments in show history. These are but a few:

Contents

Elvis Costello and The Attractions

Originally told to perform the song "Less Than Zero", a song about the British Union of Fascists, Elvis stopped the rest of The Attractions during the first verse, claiming that there was no reason to play the song in the United States, and immediately launched into "Radio, Radio," despite the objections of his record company and Lorne Michaels on December 17, 1977.

Charles Rocket

Utter the ultimate obscenity on the February 21, 1981 episode.

Ashlee Simpson

In October of 2004, singer Ashlee Simpson was caught lip synching during the live taping.

Sinead O'Connor

In one of the show's most notorious moments, Irish songstress Sinead O'Connor ripped up a picture of the Pope live on television in October 1992. In reruns this would be edited out. This performance, as well as the absence of applause afterwards, can be seen on the SNL 25 Years of Music DVD (disc 4: 1990-1995).

Rage Against the Machine

Before playing "Bulls on Parade" during the April 10, 1996 show, members of RATM hung American flags upside down from their amps. NBC and SNL would not allow them to do this for several reasons, and as a result the band did not play either of their songs and stormed off of the show.
