No matter what he was doing on the stages of Studio 8H, Andy Kaufman was always enigmatic, original, and sometimes just plain confounding. From lip-synching the theme to "Mighty Mouse," doing a spot-on Elvis impersonation, or asking the audience to vote to keep him on the show, he always kept everyone – including the cast and crew – guessing.
Born in New York City in 1949, Kaufman always knew he wanted to be a performer. After a brief stint at a two-year college, he refined his dada-ist style performance art by playing small venues along the east coast. His unique style caught the attention of SNL writers and they booked Kaufman for the very first show.
He would go on to make an additional 14 appearances before the audience voted to ban him for his controversial "wrestling with women" performances.
Kaufman died of lung cancer in 1984, but to this day rumors persist that he faked his own death.
Sacha Baron Cohen, aka "Borat"
Cold Open
- 10/28/2006
The audience was clearly thrilled on October 28, 2006 when the cold open started and Borat appeared to kick off the 608th episode of Saturday Night Live.
It was a heady time back then and Borat fever was in full swing. Though Sacha Baron Cohen's Kazakhstani character had been around for some years, thanks to "Da Ali G Show," the feature-length film, and the massive media blitz behind it, didn't stamp him onto the cultural map until late summer of '06.
Borat's SNL appearance centered around the notion that NBC had to make financial sacrifices. Because of this, Saturday Night Live sold the cold opening to the Kazakhstan government, whose reprehensive - namely Borat - was trotted out to extol the many virtues of his homeland.
As Borat might say, "It's very nice."
On the new Ashton Kutcher episode Cameron Diaz does a special appeareance as the star of the show.
